Providing an accessible introduction to narrative discourse, this
book takes the reader from its present theory and practice to its
future research and applications. Narrative Discourse offers a
sound discussion of the theoretical principles underlying the study
of narrative, covering what narrative is, how it has been
understood in the last forty years and the issues surround the
different conceptualisations of narrative discourse. It presents a
comprehensive overview of its practical applications, covering
topics such as narratives in the workplace and narratives of
immigration. It also provides readers with advice and guidance on
how to set up their own projects for analysising narrative
discourse. This is an essential addition to the book collection of
advanced students and researchers interested in the theory and
practice of narrative discourse.
English summary: The project "Deutsche Wortfeldetymologie in
europaischem Kontext" (German etymology of lexical fields in a
European context) categorizes the vocabulary of German nouns
relating to persons from Old High to present day German according
to lexical fields, analyzing it in semantic and etymological terms
and placing it within its European context. German description: Im
This encyclopaedia of one of the major fields of language studies
is a continuously updated source of state-of-the-art information
for anyone interested in language use. The IPrA Handbook of
Pragmatics provides easy access - for scholars with widely
divergent backgrounds but with convergent interests in the use and
functioning of language - to the different topics, traditions and
methods which together make up the field of Pragmatics, broadly
conceived as the cognitive, social and cultural study of language
and communication, i.e. the science of language use. The Handbook
of Pragmatics is a unique reference work for researchers, which has
been expanded and updated continuously with annual installments
since 1995. It is also available online.
This book offers an analysis of blind people's pragmatic abilities.
By exploring the impact of visual impairment on the interpretation
of utterances, it identifies common ground between the pragmatic
analysis of comprehension and visual impairment, and shows how the
study of pragmatics can be enriched by the study of visual
impairment. It also investigates the role of accessible contextual
cues and the effect of visual impairment on comprehension. Although
it is generally accepted that context plays a crucial role in
comprehension, it is still unknown what effect a lack (or
insufficiency) of certain contextual information has on
interpretation and mutual communication between people. This raises
the question of whether people who are blind are equally competent
and successful in interpreting spoken language as sighted people.
Also, bearing in mind the specific difficulties and delays faced by
blind children in social and linguistic development indicated in
previous studies, it is worth exploring whether these initial
difficulties are eventually overcome by blind adults. This book, in
offering a satisfactory answer to this relevant question, is one of
the very few publications devoted to the analysis of the
pragmalinguistic consequences of blindness.
First volume: This book is the first in a three-volume set that
celebrates the career and achievements of Cliff Goddard, a pioneer
of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach in linguistics. In
addition, it explores ethnopragmatics and conversational humour,
with a further focus on semantic analysis more broadly. Second
Volume: This book is the second in a three-volume set that
celebrates the career and achievements of Cliff Goddard, a pioneer
of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach in linguistics. It
focuses on meaning and culture, with sections on "Words as Carriers
of Cultural Meaning" and "Understanding Discourse in Cultural
Context". Third Volume: This book is the third in a three-volume
set that celebrates the career and achievements of Cliff Goddard, a
pioneer of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach in
linguistics. This third volume explores the potential of Minimal
English, a recent offshoot of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage,
with special reference to its use in Language Teaching and
Intercultural Communication. Often considered the most fully
developed, comprehensive and practical approach to cross-linguistic
and cross-cultural semantics, Natural Semantic Metalanguage is
based on evidence that there is a small core of basic, universal
meanings (semantic primes) that can be expressed in all languages.
It has been used for linguistic and cultural analysis in such
diverse fields as semantics, cross-cultural communication, language
teaching, humour studies and applied linguistics, and has reached
far beyond the boundaries of linguistics into ethnopsychology,
anthropology, history, political science, the medical humanities
and ethics.
In recent years, the study of formal semantics and formal
pragmatics has grown tremendously showing that core aspects of
language meaning can be explained by a few principles. These
principles are grounded in the logic that is behind - and tightly
intertwined with - the grammar of human language. In this book,
some of the most prominent figures in linguistics, including Noam
Chomsky and Barbara H. Partee, offer new insights into the nature
of linguistic meaning and pave the way for the further development
of formal semantics and formal pragmatics. Each chapter
investigates various dimensions in which the logical nature of
human language manifests itself within a language and/or across
languages. Phenomena like bare plurals, free choice items, scalar
implicatures, intervention effects, and logical operators are
investigated in depth and at times cross-linguistically and/or
experimentally. This volume will be of interest to scholars working
within the fields of semantics, pragmatics, language acquisition
and psycholinguistics.
The book is a collection of 10 papers on theoretical and applied
linguistics, and is divided into two sections. Part I, devoted to
Theoretical Linguistics, addresses a range of issues pertaining to
phonology, morphophonology, morphology, cognitive semantics, syntax
and lexicology, and consists of six chapters. Part II, Applied
Linguistics, comprises four chapters, which investigate the
intricacies of language acquisition, psycholinguistics and
pragmatics, discourse analysis, and translation studies. The
languages analysed include Polish, English, French, Spanish,
Russian, Middle English, Middle French, Anglo-Norman and Bangor
Welsh. Some of the phenomena analysed in the volume are the
properties of Bangor Welsh diphthongs in the light of the Lateral
Theory of Phonology, Polish palatalization within Element Theory,
lexical convergence in Psalters, bilingual acquisition,
impoliteness in talk-show political discourse, and translation and
localisation of video games, among others.
