There are some things we just don't talk about. Things like sex, particularly when our sexuality is a matter of personal struggle. Things like the vulnerabilities of our pastors, who must maintain a fa?ade not merely of respectability but of moral and psychological superiority. We don't talk about things that make us feel insecure, that make us feel unsettled. But the nature of spiritual growth, even the story of Christian faith, is a matter of being unsettled from the comfortable compromises we've made and set on a course together toward wholeness and mutually supportive community. Pastor T. C. Ryan takes us on an unsettling journey through his lifelong struggle with sexual addiction, one that predated and pervaded his pastoral ministry--one which for far too long he faced in secrecy and isolation, separated from the brothers and sisters in Christ who were called to bear one another's burdens. Ashamed No More doesn't cast blame or argue for looser moral standards. It does, however, call us to the unsettling ministry that a God who is love calls us to--the unsettling grace that is the audacious gospel of Christ.

University Adaptation in Difficult Economic Times (Hardcover): Paola Mattei University Adaptation in Difficult Economic Times (Hardcover)
Paola Mattei
R1,962 Discovery Miles 19 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Financial sustainability is one of the key challenges confronting Europe's universities today. Despite the fact that universities are at the centre of knowledge creation and development, which itself is seen as one of the main engines of economic growth, public funding of higher education in most countries is not increasing or at least not increasing enough in real terms. "Democratisation of higher education" has led to the fact that the higher education budgets per student are relatively low in most European countries compared to Europe's competitors. Despite declarations of intent to increase spending on higher education and research, it is not very likely that public expenditure will grow significantly on average in Europe and therefore be able to keep up with rapidly inflating costs in the years to come. One of the reasons for this is that higher education and research have to compete with other priorities in public budgets (e.g., security, health, etc.). Furthermore, the recent economic downturn has contributed to the decision in many European countries to decrease the levels of investment in higher education and research. Such trends are particularly worrisome for universities across Europe, whose continuing dependence on public funding puts their future sustainability under pressure. New funding schemes and incentives have been discussed and introduced in many European higher education systems, including competitive funding schemes for research under the name of "excellence" policies. Despite the different national institutional configurations in Europe, higher education systems face similar demands of promoting sustainable funding models, maintaining high academic standards, and equality. Thus, financial sustainability is not an end in itself; it aims to ensure that the public university's goals are reached by guaranteeing that the institution produces sufficient income to enable it to invest in high quality education and produce equitable outcomes. For these reasons, this book analyses funding reforms from a multidimensional approach.

Treatment of Sex Offenders - Strengths and Weaknesses in Assessment and Intervention (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): D.Richard Laws,... Treatment of Sex Offenders - Strengths and Weaknesses in Assessment and Intervention (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
D.Richard Laws, William O'Donohue
R3,789 Discovery Miles 37 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This rigorous survey offers a comprehensive rethinking of the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders for a bold challenge to practitioners. It critiques what we understand about offenders and the mechanisms of offending behaviors, and examines how this knowledge can best be used to reduce offending and relapses. To this end, experts weigh the efficacy of common assessment methods and interventions, the value of prevention programs, and the validity of the DSM's classifications of paraphilias. This strengths/weaknesses approach gives professional readers a guide to the current state as well as the future of research, practice, and policy affecting this complex and controversial field. Included in the coverage: Strengths of actuarial risk assessment. Risk formulation: the new frontier in risk assessment and management. Dynamic risk factors and offender rehabilitation: a comparison of the Good Lives Model and the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model. The best intentions: flaws in sexually violent predator laws. Desistance from crime: toward an integrated conceptualization for intervention. From a victim/offender duality to a public health perspective. A call to clear thought and accurate action, Treatment of Sex Offenders will generate discussion and interest among forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers.

Short-Term Spiritual Guidance (Book, New): Bidwell Short-Term Spiritual Guidance (Book, New)
Bidwell
R514 Discovery Miles 5 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bidwell's book represents a significant departure from most contemporary writing about spiritual direction. While most writers focus on long-term relationships of guidance, and specifically envision long listening sessions, Bidwell changes focus. Spiritual direction, he insists, typically requires intervention in a specific crisis or situation or question, is not formal, lasts fewer than five sessions, and must be actively and intentionally focused on the person's growth. Bidwell's work shows what spiritual directors can learn from the short-term therapy model, especially about enabling people briefly but effectively to "learn to listen on their own and with others for God's presence." Focusing on how God is already active in the directed's life allows the participants to identify God's action and respond in ways that collaborate with that identified movement of the Spirit. The chapters include introduction to the foundations of spiritual direction as well as to specific direction techniques; they also address such topics as discernment, direction for couples and families, group direction, and discerning vocation.

Family Psychoeducation for Serious Mental Illness (Hardcover): Harriet P. Lefley Family Psychoeducation for Serious Mental Illness (Hardcover)
Harriet P. Lefley
R1,436 Discovery Miles 14 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research shows that many adults with serious mental illness live with or maintain contact with their families. But families are rarely given information about their relative's illness and their own needs for support are ignored. To be optimally beneficial, family members and other caregivers need education about the disorder, some knowledge of illness management techniques, and personal support. Family psychoeducation (FPE) is a powerful evidence-based psychosocial intervention that serves consumers and their families.
FPE has proven efficacious in reducing relapse and hospitalization, reducing symptoms, increasing employability of persons with severe and persistent mental illness, and, in many cases, enhancing their families' well-being. Its success rests with a state-of-the-art education model for improving caregivers' understanding of their loved one's illness through learning what is known and not known about it and how to assess and cope with its manifestations. Here, in the first book of its kind, Harriet P. Lefley traces the history of FPE -- including the developments in mental health services and systems and theoretical approaches that inform it -- and the robust empirical evidence it now claims after a quarter-century of development and evaluation at major research centers around the world. Presenting first the approach's generic components, training models, and required competencies, Lefley then discusses the available variations, such as Family Education (FE), a brief manualized form of FPE offered by professionally trained family members that has some empirical support for knowledge gains and easing family distress. The result is a comprehensive, practical introduction to family psychoeducation that critically appraises the evidence and examines the model's place in contemporary mental health systems.
This groundbreaking volume is an ideal training tool for graduate students of social work, psychology, and psychiatry and a valuable addition to the clinician's armamentarium of evidence-based practices for clients with serious mental illness.

This innovative volume details counseling interventions for secondary students with ADHD and its associated academic and conduct problems, particularly focusing on youth at risk for developing serious disruptive behaviors. It addresses the continuing debate over counseling for youths with ADHD by identifying key elements common to reputable therapies and suggesting a framework for their successful implementation. The core of the book discusses the Challenging Horizons Program (CHP), a behavior- and solutions-focused approach to counseling adolescents with ADHD that has been studied extensively for more than 15 years. Based on the quality of research, the CHP has been included in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices maintained by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Excerpts from actual sessions illustrate typical therapist-client interactions in the CHP, and sample modules from the program's treatment literature expand the book's descriptions of effective hands-on interventions. Counseling skills featured in this book include: Bridging the research-into-practice divide. Establishing a therapeutic alliance with students with ADHD. Developing and implementing interventions for memory, organization, and planning. Enhancing young clients' social skills. Enlisting family members in the intervention process. Working directly with teachers to improve student behaviors. A Practical Guide to Implementing School-Based Interventions for Adolescents with ADHD is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians and related professionals, and graduate students in such disciplines as school and clinical child psychology, social work, educational psychology, psychotherapy and counseling, and learning and instruction.

Paula Allen-Meares, Trina R Shanks; Larry M. Gant, Leslie Hollingsworth, Patricia L. Miller
R1,666 Discovery Miles 16 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Urban renewal has been the dominant approach to revitalizing industrialized communities that fall into decline. A national, community-based organization, the Skillman Foundation sought to engage in a joint effort with the University of Michigan's School of Social Work to bring six neighborhoods in one such declining urban center, Detroit, back to positions of strength and national leadership. A Twenty-First Century Approach to Community Change introduces readers to the basis for the Foundation's solicitation of social work expertise and the social context within which the work of technical assistance began. Building on research, the authors introduce the theory and practice knowledge of earlier scholars, including the conduct of needs assessments at multiple levels, engagement of community members in identifying problem-solving strategies, assistance in developing community goals, and implementation of social work field instruction opportunities. Lessons learned and challenges are described as they played out in the process of creating partnerships for the Foundation with community leaders, engaging and maintaining youth involvement, managing roles and relationships with multiple partners recruited by the Foundation for their specialized expertise, and ultimately conducting the work of technical assistance within a context of increasing influence of the city's surrounding systems (political, economic, educational, and social). Readers will especially note the role of technical assistance in an evolving theory of change.

An important roadmap for fundraising in today’s multicultural communities

Raising money in today’s diverse communities is a growing challenge for fundraisers and philanthropists, requiring thoughtful strategies, successful collaborations, and a respectful understanding of people’s differences.

In this groundbreaking new book, the author examines today’s four major ethnic groups–African American, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American–in terms of their diverse histories, traditions, and motivations, and then applies this information to the proven components of successful fundraising. The result is a timely and important look at how fundraisers can use an understanding of ethnic differences to create a vibrant and balanced nonprofit center through both individual and collective efforts.

In clear, easy-to-understand language, Cultivating Diversity in Fundraising answers the following critical questions:

  • Who are diverse donors?
  • What are their charitable traditions and interests?
  • What fundraising methods will be successful in diverse communities?
  • What can fundraisers do to include more diversity in fundraising efforts?

Designed as a guide to fundraising as well as a strategic update for existing fundraisers, this book should be required reading for anyone working in today’s nonprofit sector.

Rana Jawad
R2,944 Discovery Miles 29 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This original book makes a timely and potentially controversial contribution both to the teaching of social policy and the wider debates surrounding it in Britain today. It offers a critical and theoretically-sensitive overview of the role of religious values, actors and institutions in the development of state and non-state social welfare provision in Britain, combining historical discussion of the relationship between religion and social policy in Britain with a comparative theoretical discussion that covers continental Europe and North America. Grounded in new empirical research on religious welfare organisations from the nine major faiths in the UK, the book brings together all of these perspectives to argue for an analytical shift in the definition of wellbeing through a new concept called 'ways of being'. This reflects the moral, ideational and cultural underpinnings of social welfare. Written in a readable style, the book will appeal to students and tutors of social policy, as well as policy-makers seeking to inform themselves about the key issues surrounding faith-based welfare in modern Britain.

R3,021 Discovery Miles 30 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dynamic Psychotherapy with Adult Survivors: Living Past Neglect by Lori Bennett examines the aftereffects of emotional neglect in order to help clinicians to better serve survivors. How do young adults climb out of their histories of neglect? How can they hope to feel loved if they never experienced the love they needed in their families of origin? How do they combat the damage to trust? How do they learn to stop the self-blame over circumstances, to move beyond the past, and to embrace a new future? These questions are answered in Dynamic Psychotherapy with Adult Survivors.
