Burnout in Probation and Corrections (Hardcover): John T Whitehead Burnout in Probation and Corrections (Hardcover)
John T Whitehead
R2,759 Discovery Miles 27 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John T. Whitehead analyzes the extent and causes of job burnout in probation officers and correctional officers. Challenging models of burnout that focus on individual-level causes, Whitehead demonstrates that the findings support an organization model of the sources of job burnout -- a finding that has significant implications for managerial policy aimed at reducing burnout. Further, Whitehead shows that while burnout appears to be a serious problem for a sizeable minority of workers, it is not a problem for the majority. Ideal as supplemental reading for courses in criminal justice, criminology, and social work, Burnout in Probation and Corrections sheds new light on the incidence, causes, and possible remedies for job burnout in these professions. Whitehead's study is unique in its analysis of multiple samples from several states and regions and from two different time periods. The study also includes a qualitative analysis of worker comments on the factors contributing to burnout, a comparison of correctional officer versus probation officer burnout, and a comparison of male and female probation officer burnout. Based on his research, he indicates that client contact is not the cause of burnout in probation and correctional officers, a conclusion that contrasts sharply with some of the previous theoretical work in the field. Instead, Whitehead demonstrates, organizational issues such as role conflict are critical sources of burnout. Therefore, managerial policy should center upon organizational improvements to reduce job stress and job dissatisfaction.

Zuki Karpinska; Series edited by Colin Brock
R6,291 Discovery Miles 62 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a global exploration of humanitarian aid and educational service provision in situations of instability. What is the relationship between education, aid and aid agencies? Intimate Violence Across the Lifespan - Interpersonal, Familial, and Cross-Generational Perspectives (Hardcover, 2014 ed.):... Intimate Violence Across the Lifespan - Interpersonal, Familial, and Cross-Generational Perspectives (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Tova Band-Winterstein, Zvi Eisikovits
R2,885 R1,921 Discovery Miles 19 210 Save R964 (33%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Evidence pertaining to continual violence throughout the life cycle coupled with the experience of growing old in a life permeated by intimate violence is scarce. And the focus is usually on the victims usually, the older, battered women and seldom on their aging partners or adult children who were part and parcel of the violent dynamics in the family system. With the increase in longevity and the older population s subsequent growth in size, the number of elderly couples living and aging in long-lasting conflictive relationships is on the rise.

The relatively intense preoccupation with elder abuse in the gerontological literature in recent years has not specifically addressed long-term intimate violence among the old adults and its lasting consequences. Similarly, the literature on intimate intergenerational relationships in old age has usually focused on normative exchanges between partners and their extended family, including their adult children. Therefore, conflictive relationships, and particularly violent ones, have also fallen outside the scope of this body of research. This volume describes and analyzes the various perspectives of family members concerning life, and particularly old age, in the shadow of long-term intimate violence. It explores how people make sense out of living and aging in violence, how interpersonal, familial and cross-generational relationships are perceived and reconstructed and how we-ness is achieved, if at all, in such families."

The Compassionate Memsahibs - Welfare Activities of British Women in India, 1900-1947 (Hardcover): Mary Ann Lind The Compassionate Memsahibs - Welfare Activities of British Women in India, 1900-1947 (Hardcover)
Mary Ann Lind
R2,752 Discovery Miles 27 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Compassionate Memsahibs refutes the traditional view--perpetuated in the works of writers like Rudyard Kipling--of the memsahibs as a homogeneous group of aloof, pampered women who had little interest in India. Here Mary Ann Lind presents information about the lives of fifteen memsahibs--all of which is previously unpublished--who voluntarily participated in reform and welfare activities in India during the first half of this century. Their activities and experiences placed them outside the more expected lifestyle of the memsahib and offer contemporary social historians a new window through which to view the Raj.

Street Children and Homeless Youth - A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Lewis Aptekar, Daniel Stoecklin Street Children and Homeless Youth - A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Lewis Aptekar, Daniel Stoecklin
R2,890 Discovery Miles 28 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with street children who live in the developing world, and homeless youth who are from the developed world. They are referred to as children in street situations (CSS) to show that the problem is both in the children and in the situation they face. The book examines several aspects of the children and their street situations, including the families of origin and the homes they leave, the children's social life, and mental health. Other aspects are the problems of published demographics, the construction of public opinion about these children and the, often violent, reactions from authorities. The book then discusses current research on children in street situations, as well as programs and policies. The book ends with recommendations about programs, policies and research.

Cultivating Mindfulness in Clinical Social Work - Narratives from Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Terry B. Northcut Cultivating Mindfulness in Clinical Social Work - Narratives from Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Terry B. Northcut
R4,222 Discovery Miles 42 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This practice-focused resource integrates broad therapeutic knowledge with current neuroscience to present vast possibilities for mindfulness in clinical social work. Seasoned practitioners posit mindfulness practice and process as a significant bridge between taking care of self and taking care of others, demonstrating its implications for physical and mental health in personal and professional contexts. Case studies show timeless concepts (e.g., acceptance) and new mindfulness-based ideas (e.g., learned helpfulness) in use in individual treatment as well as couples counseling and group interventions. Also attesting to the utility of mindfulness across problems, settings, and practitioner orientations, diverse applications are organized along ten robust lenses, among them: * Beginning with the context: the mind-body conundrum.* Beginning with the body: the neurobiology of mindfulness.* Beginning with the training: training clinicians in essential methods for integrating mindfulness in clinical practice.* Beginning with the clients: mindfully reconciling opposites with survivors of trauma/complex traumatic stress disorders.* Beginning with the symptom: incorporating mindfulness in the treatment of substance misuse. * Beginning with the larger social system: mindfulness and restorative justice. Clinicians and research professionals particularly interested in psychotherapy treatment and mindfulness practice will find Cultivating Mindfulness in Clinical Social Work not only stimulating and intriguing, but also a fresh source of real-world wisdom.

Handbook of Resilience in Children (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2013): Sam Goldstein, Robert B. Brooks Handbook of Resilience in Children (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2013)
Sam Goldstein, Robert B. Brooks
R8,751 Discovery Miles 87 510 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Today's children face a multitude of pressures, from the everyday challenges of life to the increasing threats of poverty, exploitation, and trauma. Central to growing up successfully is learning to deal with stress, endure hardships, and thrive despite adversity. Resilience - the ability to cope with and overcome life's difficulties - is a quality that can potentially be nurtured in all young people. The second edition of the Handbook of Resilience in Children updates and expands on its original focus of resilience in children who overcome adversity to include its development in those not considered at risk, leading to better outcomes for all children across the lifespan. Expert contributors examine resilience in relation to environmental stressors, as a phenomenon in child and adolescent disorders, and as a means toward positive adaptation into adulthood. New and revised chapters explore strategies for developing resilience in the family, the therapist's office, and the school as well as its nurturance in caregivers and teachers. Topics addressed include: Resilience in maltreated children and adults. Resilience and self-control impairment. Relational resilience in young and adolescent girls. Asset-building as an essential component of treatment. Assessment of social and emotional competencies related to resilience. Building resilience through school bullying prevention programs. Large-scale longitudinal studies on resilience. The second edition of the Handbook of Resilience in Children is a must-have reference for researchers, clinicians, allied practitioners and professionals, and graduate students in school and clinical psychology, education, pediatrics, psychiatry, social work, school counseling, and public health.

Medicine and Money - A Study of the Role of Beneficence in Health Care Cost Containment (Hardcover, New): Frank H. Marsh, Mark... Medicine and Money - A Study of the Role of Beneficence in Health Care Cost Containment (Hardcover, New)
Frank H. Marsh, Mark Yarborough
R2,204 Discovery Miles 22 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Medicine and Money: A Study of the Role of Beneficence in Health Care Cost Containment is a frank discussion of the moral problems associated with the need to control health care costs. The book provides a base for physicians to address these concerns and examines the events leading to America's current health care crisis, diminishing beneficence. After a brief definition of the problem, Frank H. Marsh and Mark Yarborough continue by describing the threat of cost containment and justifying beneficence-based health care system. Special importance is given to Medicine and Money by the lengthy suggestions on implementing beneficence in the health care system. Marsh and Yarborough address the problem of eroding morality and rising cost concerns of our present health care system. They argue that if the central role of beneficence is abandoned, the medical profession will be unable to properly meet the challenge it faces. Medicine and Money divides its argument into two sections. In the first section, the current crisis in health care is examined and a justification for beneficence is given. The second section describes how beneficence can be implemented in the health care system as a means to control health care costs. Medicine and Money is written for every member of the medical and philosophical communities.

Handbook of Treating Variants and Complications in Anxiety Disorders (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Eric A. Storch, Dean McKay Handbook of Treating Variants and Complications in Anxiety Disorders (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Eric A. Storch, Dean McKay
R9,396 Discovery Miles 93 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As prevalent as anxiety is as a diagnosis, clinically complex cases are even more so. At the same time that it is recognized as a spectrum of disorders with many possibilities for intervention, it is most often seen with variations that further complicate treatment. The Handbook of Treating Variants and Complications in Anxiety Disorders explains in clear detail how and why clinical factors present challenges to clinicians treating clients with these disorders. Comorbid conditions often found in children, adolescents, and adults with anxiety, including developmental disabilities and personality disorders, are analyzed in the context of treatment. Case examples and literature reviews illustrate the relative merits of integrated versus sequential treatment, the importance of prioritizing behaviors, age-related considerations, and therapist issues. This best-practices approach guides readers in choosing current evidence-based options for treatment that is tailored to the individual and effective in the short and long term. Included in the Handbook: Prognostic indicators of treatment response for children and adults with anxiety disorders. Treatment of comorbid anxiety and disruptive behavior in youth. Treatment of PTSD with comorbid borderline personality disorder. Limited motivation, patient-therapist mismatch, and the therapeutic alliance. Assessment and treatment of comorbid anorexia nervosa and obsessive compulsive disorder. Treatment of comorbid anxiety disorders across the lifespan. Developed as a companion reference to the Handbook of Assessing Variants and Complications in Anxiety Disorders, the Handbook of Treating Variants and Complications in Anxiety Disorders is of immediate relevance to researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in clinical child, school, and developmental psychology; social work; psychiatry; psychotherapy; counseling; and pediatrics.

Susan P. Murphy
R3,170 Discovery Miles 31 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This monograph opens with an examination of the aid industry and the claims of leading practitioners that the industry is experiencing a crisis of confidence due to an absence of clear moral guidelines. The book then undertakes a critical review of the leading philosophical accounts of the duty to aid, including the narrow, instructive accounts in the writings of John Rawls and Peter Singer, and broad, disruptive accounts in the writings of Onora O'Neill and Amartya Sen. Through an elaboration of the elements of interconnection, responsible action, inclusive engagement, and accumulative duties, the comparative approach developed in the book has the potential to overcome the philosophical tensions between the accounts and provide guidance to aid practitioners, donors and recipients in the complex contemporary circumstances of assistance. Informed by real world examples, this book grapples with complex and multi-dimensional questions concerning practices and the ethics of aid. The author judiciously guides us through the debate between deontological and consequentialist moral theories to arrive at a sophisticated consequentialist account that does justice to the complexity of the problems and facilitates our deliberation in discharging our duty to aid, without yielding, as it should not, a determinate answer for each specific situation. Researchers, students, and practitioners of international aid will all find this book rewarding. Win-chiat Lee, Professor and Chair, Department of Philosophy, Wake Forest University Susan Murphy's book offers us a sophisticated exploration of the philosophical basis for aid. It is grounded in a full understanding of the complexities and pitfalls of the aid industry, but its particular strength lies, mainly through an extensive discussion of Singer, Rawls, O'Neill and Sen, in a comparison of consequentialist and duty-based approaches, eventually endorsing a broad non-idealised, situated consequentialist account in what she calls an interconnected ethical approach to the practice of assistance. For anyone wanting to think carefully about why we should give aid, this book has much to offer. Private Action and the Public Good (Hardcover, New): Walter W. Powell, Elisabeth S. Clemens Private Action and the Public Good (Hardcover, New)
Walter W. Powell, Elisabeth S. Clemens
R2,016 Discovery Miles 20 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Governments around the world are turning over more of their services to private or charitable organizations, as politicians and pundits celebrate participation in civic activities. But can nonprofits provide more and higher-quality services than governments or for-profit businesses? Will nonprofits really increase social connectedness and civic engagement? This book, a sequel to Walter W. Powell's widely acclaimed The Nonprofit Sector: A Research Handbook, brings together an original collection of writings that explore the nature of the "public good" and how private nonprofit organizations relate to it.

The contributors to this book -- eminent sociologists, political scientists, management scholars, historians, and economists -- examine the nonprofit sector through a variety of theoretical and methodological lenses. They consider the tensions between the provision of public goods and the interests of members and donors in nonprofit organizations. They contrast religious and secular nonprofits, as well as private and nonprofit provision of child care, mental health services, and health care. And they explore the growing role of nonprofits in the United States, France, Germany, and Eastern Europe, the contribution of nonprofits to economic development, and the forms and strategies of private action.

"This volume addresses an extremely important topic from an academic standpoint and from a public policy perspective -- how nonprofits might contribute to the collective good, why they often fail, and some of the consequences for the larger society of their pursuit of the public good". -- Joseph Galaskiewicz, University of Minnesota

The Subjectivity Of Participation - Articulating Social Work Practice with Youth in Copenhagen (Hardcover): M Nissen The Subjectivity Of Participation - Articulating Social Work Practice with Youth in Copenhagen (Hardcover)
M Nissen
R1,549 Discovery Miles 15 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is a 'we' a collective and how can we use such communal self-knowledge to help people? This book is about collectivity, participation, and subjectivity and about the social theories that may help us understand these matters. It also seeks to learn from the innovative practices and ideas of a community of social/youth workers in Copenhagen between 1987 and 2003, who developed a pedagogy through creating collectives and mobilizing young people as participants. The theoretical and practical traditions are combined in a unique methodology viewing research as a contentious modeling of prototypical practices. Through this dialogue, it develops an original trans-disciplinary critical theory and practice of collective subjectivity for which the ongoing construction and overcoming of common sense, or ideology, is central. It also points to ways of relating discourse with agency, and fertilizing insights from interactionism and ideology theories in a cultural-historical framework.
