The Structure of Musical Sound is about science from the point of view of musical sound. It is also a book about musical sound from science's point of view. First and foremost, however, it is a science text for nonscientists.

You, the reader, will be introduced to the methods of science; and you will be shown how these methods are used to discover more about musical sound. You will be an active participant in both of these quests, and as a result you will become a more "scientific" person than you might have realized possible.

Parts of musical sound have scientific explanations. Examples of these parts include the rules for the formation and propagation of sound waves, the operation of musical instruments as they produce their sounds, and the acoustic conditions for good listening to musical sound in rooms and halls. The Structure of Musical Sound explains all of these scientific aspects of music.

Questions are included throughout the book. They will challenge you to demonstrate your understanding of the ideas just presented. The solutions, not just the answers, to these questions are provided at the end of this book.

Thermoacoustic Instability - A Complex Systems Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): R. I. Sujith, Samadhan A. Pawar Thermoacoustic Instability - A Complex Systems Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
R. I. Sujith, Samadhan A. Pawar
R4,027 Discovery Miles 40 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book systematically presents the consolidated findings of the phenomenon of self-organization observed during the onset of thermoacoustic instability using approaches from dynamical systems and complex systems theory. Over the last decade, several complex dynamical states beyond limit cycle oscillations such as quasiperiodicity, frequency-locking, period-n, chaos, strange non-chaos, and intermittency have been discovered in thermoacoustic systems operated in laminar and turbulent flow regimes. During the onset of thermoacoustic instability in turbulent systems, an ordered acoustic field and large coherent vortices emerge from the background of turbulent combustion. This emergence of order from disorder in both temporal and spatiotemporal dynamics is explored in the contexts of synchronization, pattern formation, collective interaction, multifractality, and complex networks. For the past six decades, the spontaneous emergence of large amplitude, self-sustained, tonal oscillations in confined combustion systems, characterized as thermoacoustic instability, has remained one of the most challenging areas of research. The presence of such instabilities continues to hinder the development and deployment of high-performance combustion systems used in power generation and propulsion applications. Even with the advent of sophisticated measurement techniques to aid experimental investigations and vast improvements in computational power necessary to capture flow physics in high fidelity simulations, conventional reductionist approaches have not succeeded in explaining the plethora of dynamical behaviors and the associated complexities that arise in practical combustion systems. As a result, models and theories based on such approaches are limited in their application to mitigate or evade thermoacoustic instabilities, which continue to be among the biggest concerns for engine manufacturers today. This book helps to overcome these limitations by providing appropriate methodologies to deal with nonlinear thermoacoustic oscillations, and by developing control strategies that can mitigate and forewarn thermoacoustic instabilities. The book is also beneficial to scientists and engineers studying the occurrence of several other instabilities, such as flow-induced vibrations, compressor surge, aeroacoustics and aeroelastic instabilities in diverse fluid-mechanical environments, to graduate students who intend to apply dynamical systems and complex systems approach to their areas of research, and to physicists who look for experimental applications of their theoretical findings on nonlinear and complex systems.

A Theory of Fields (Paperback): I. W. Mackintosh A Theory of Fields (Paperback)
I. W. Mackintosh
R1,109 Discovery Miles 11 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Theory of Fields is a new approach to a unifying fundamental theory of physics. It is based on just two postulates from which gravity and electricity emerge as fundamental concepts, resulting in a set of Field Equations. The book develops solutions of these equations and, in so doing, accounts for the existence of fundamental particles and derives the principles of classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and gravitation. Travelling wave solutions lead to the existence and properties of photons. Models are proposed for the proton, neutron, kaon, pion, muon, electron and electron neutrino leading to the prediction of their shapes, sizes, inertial masses and internal structures. Predicted values for the gravitational constant and charge of the electron agree with the measured values within less than 20%. Many other topics in modern physics are also dealt with in the context of the new theory, including the nuclear force, the weak force and quarks.

This textbook is written for use in any university course related to the physics of waves, wave theory, and electromagnetic waves in departments such as Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mathematics. The only prerequisite knowledge is a course in calculus. This textbook provides a unified treatment of waves that either occur naturally or can be excited and propagated in various media. This includes both longitudinal and transverse waves. The book covers both mechanical and electrical waves, which are normally covered separately due to their differences in physical phenomena. This text focuses more on the similarities of all waves, mechanical orelectromagnetic, and therefore allows the reader to formulate a unified understanding of wave phenomena in its totality. This second edition contains extensive updates and advances in the understanding of wave phenomena since the publication of the first edition (1985). Numerous additional problems are now present and several chapters have been rewritten and combined. This is the first book in the Mario Boella Series on Electromagnetism in Information and Communication. Key features include: A unified treatment of wave phenomena; Numerical techniques using MATLAB; Both mechanical and electrical waves are described; Necessary mathematics required to understand the material summarized within; Only prerequisite is an introductory course in calculus.

The Final Theory - Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy (Second Edition) (Paperback, 2nd ed.): Mark McCutcheon The Final Theory - Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy (Second Edition) (Paperback, 2nd ed.)
Mark McCutcheon
R979 Discovery Miles 9 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A key unresolved issue lies at the heart of our science -- the quest of Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, Hawking and many others, now widely known as the Theory of Everything. This ultimate understanding is expected to transform science and resolve its many mysteries -- all via one single overlooked principle in nature that will explain, simplify and unify everything. This quest has produced theories such as Special Relativity, General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, enormous investments in powerful particle accelerators and space telescopes, and such recent pursuits as "Dark Matter" and "Dark Energy." But enormous problems remain: these theories, projects and pursuits are all completely separate and frequently incompatible, presenting unresolved abstractions, speculation, paradoxes and mysteries that often even violate our laws of physics, upon closer examination. As a result, the Theory of Everything continues to elude us, with no clear way forward. The Final Theory clearly shows why this is the case, exposing centuries of well-intentioned but misguided scientific thought that has locked us into an erroneous and highly troubled energy-based science that has taken us far off track. It corrects the errors in our scientific legacy, showing that energy is actually a misunderstanding of the unifying principle we have sought for centuries -- a principle that is active all around us, producing all known phenomena such as gravity, light, electricity and magnetism. This new understanding replaces both Newton's "gravitational force" theory and Einstein's "warped space-time" General Relativity Theory, while also overturning such theories as Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. In their place is a single simple principle that finally demystifies, explains and unifies everything. Read The Final Theory and judge for yourself whether the Theory of Everything has finally arrived

Introduction to Photorefractive Nonlinear Optics (Hardcover): P. Yeh Introduction to Photorefractive Nonlinear Optics (Hardcover)
P. Yeh
R6,815 Discovery Miles 68 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nonlinear optical media have already opened up a universe rich in technological possibilities. Holograms can be recorded and erased in these media. And nonlinear optical media, such as photorefractive crystals, are highly efficient, particularly for wave mixing and phase conjugation. To make effective use of these media for the transmission and manipulation of optical information requires a clear understanding of the theory at the root of the entire phenomenon. Designed as a reference for advanced students in the area of modern optics for electrical engineering and applied physics, Introduction to Photorefractive Non-linear Optics not only sheds light on the field's basic underlying theorem but also clearly links it with practical applications, forming the first introductory textbook to balance both. While clearly illuminating such practical applications as optical computing and neural networks, the book's emphasis throughout is on the theory of the propagation of optical waves and the mixing of electromagnetic radiation in nonlinear optical media. In a progressive format that moves from the elementary to the complex, the book begins with the basics of electromagnetic waves and periodic structures, examining the physics of photorefractive effects and the mixing of waves in these media. Classical electrodynamics is used to describe the mixing of waves in photorefractive media. Concepts in elementary solid state physics are also used to clarify the discussion on the transport of charges in photorefractive crystals. Following chapters take an in-depth look at optical phase conjugators and photorefractive resonators. The fundamental principles of gratings and holograms are examined inchapters 7 and 8. The manifold applications in optical information processing, optical interconnection, and neural networks are clearly detailed in the following three chapters. The last chapter is devoted to a timely look at the higher order photorefractive effect in optical fibers. The result of the collective research and development conducted by scientists over the years at the Rockwell International Science Center, this important reference is an unprecedented inside look at the innovations at the technology's leading edge. Illustrating theory with useful numerical examples based on real situations, the book provides students with a clear practical grasp of the essentials of the science as well as the technology's day-to-day applications. Not simply a monograph, Introduction to Photorefractive Nonlinear Optics is, instead, a comprehensive introductory guide to understanding - and using - this fascinating evolving technology.

Large-Eddy Simulation for Acoustics (Hardcover): Claus Wagner, Thomas Huttl, Pierre Sagaut Large-Eddy Simulation for Acoustics (Hardcover)
Claus Wagner, Thomas Huttl, Pierre Sagaut
R3,609 Discovery Miles 36 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Noise pollution around airports, trains, and industries increasingly attracts environmental concern and regulation. Designers and researchers have intensified the use of large-eddy simulation (LES) for noise reduced industrial design and acoustical research. This book, written by 30 experts, presents the theoretical background of acoustics and of LES, followed by details about numerical methods, e.g. discretization schemes, boundary conditions, coupling aspects. Industrially relevant, hybrid RANS/LES techniques for acoustic source predictions are presented in detail. Many applications are featured ranging from simple geometries for mixing layers and jet flows to complex wing and car geometries. Selected applications include recent scientific investigations at industrial and university research institutions. Presently one can't offer perfect solution methodologies that address all relevant applications, however the book presents a state of the art collection of methods, tools and evaluation methodologies. The advantages and weaknesses of both the commercial and the research methodologies are carefully presented.

The conformal group is the invariance group of geometry (which is not understood), the largest one. Physical applications are implied, as discussed, including reasons for interactions. The group structure as well as those of related groups are analyzed. An inhomogeneous group is a subgroup of a homogeneous one because of nonlinearities of the realization. Conservation of baryons (protons can't decay) is explained and proven. Reasons for various realizations, so matrix elements, of the Lorentz group given. The clearly relevant mass level formula is compared with experimental values. Questions, implications and possibilities, including for differential equations, are raised.

Geometry through its fundamental transformations, the Poincare group, requires that wavefunctions belong to representations. Massless and massive representations are very different and their coupling almost impossible. Helicity-1 gives electromagnetism, helicity-2 gives gravitation; no higher helicities are possible. Basis states, thus the fundamental fields, are the potential and connection. General relativity is derived and is the unique theory of gravity, thus the only possible quantum theory of gravity. It is explained why it is. Because of transformations trajectories must be geodesics. Momenta are covariant derivatives and must commute. Covariant derivatives of the metric are zero.
