Die Einflussnahme des Staates auf die Filmwirtschaft entsteht aus wirtschaftlichen oder kulturellen Erwagungen. In der Regel richten sich die Massnahmen gegen eine ubermachtig erscheinende Konkurrenz aus Hollywood. Die unterschiedlichen Massnahmen, die die Staaten zum Schutz der heimischen Filmwirtschaft ergreifen, lassen sich im wesentlichen in zwei Gruppen einteilen: in Subventionen und in Restriktionen. Die Formen der Subventionen der Filmwirtschaft sind zahlreich. In der Regel werden im Rahmen einer gezielten Projektforderung Produktion, Verleih oder Abspiel heimischer Filme gefordert. Die Darstellung der unterschiedlichen Formen der Filmforderung ist nicht Gegenstand dieser Arbeit. Meine Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Eigenschaft und Wirkungsweise von Restriktionen. Auch Restriktionen erscheinen in mannigfaltiger Form: Es gibt unterschiedliche Formen der Quotenregelung, sowie Kontingente, Zolle, Abgaben, Zensuren, Gebuhren fur die Synchronisation fremdsprachiger Filme und Devisenbeschrankungen. Ich beziehe mich auf einen Fall der Devisenbeschrankung der Nachkriegszeit, der unter dem Begriff "Frozen Assets" bekannt wurde. Auch die Filmemacher sind sich ihrer stilistischen Verwandtschaft zum Essay nur selten bewusst und versehen ihre Filme daher mit den unterschiedlichsten Titeln. Das zweite Kapitel dieser Arbeit wird sich zuerst einmal mit dem Begriff des Essays in Literatur und Film auseinandersetzen, sowie seine historische Entwicklung nachzeichnen, um ihn schliesslich vom Dokumentarfilm abzugrenzen. Als Wim Wenders 1981 seinen Film Nick's Movie - Lightning Over Water in die deutschen Kinos brachte, stiess er damit weitgehend auf Ablehnung und Unverstandnis. Man warf ihm vor, das Sterben Nicholas Rays fur seine Zwecke ausgenutzt zu haben. Es wurde von Peinlichkeiten und uberlegener Selbstdarstellung gesprochen. Der Grund, warum dieser Film vor allem in Deutschland so negativ aufgenommen wurde, mag mit unserem Verhaltnis zum Tod zusammenhangen, das von dem amerikanischer oder auch dem anderer europaischer Staaten sehr verschieden ist. Zum anderen mag es damit zusammenhangen, dass der Essay-Film ahnlich wie der literarische Essay sehr viel schwerer in Deutschland Fuss fassen konnte, als in anderen Landern. Die vorliegende Arbeit bemuht sich, Nick's Movie aus verschiedenen Perspektiven zu beleuchten, um so der Qualitat dieses Filmes gerecht zu werden. Er wird dabei in die Tradition des Essay-Filmes und des Todesdiskurses im Film gestellt. Ebenso werden Parallelen zu Wenders' und Rays fruheren Filmen gezogen werden. Das 3. Kapitel fragt nach der Faszination des Kriminalgenres und gibt einen allgemeinen Uberblick zur Entwicklung. Das 4. Kapitel beschaftigt sich explizit mit den Sellern, also dem Autor der Serie Herbert Reinecker und dem Produzenten Helmut Ringelmann. Dabei werde ich versuchen herauszustellen, wie und warum die geschriebene Serie das geneigte Publikum so zu verzaubern vermag und welche Wirkungsmechanismen seinen Geschichten zugrunde liegen. In einem erheblich kurzeren Teil werde ich die auf die Inszenierung der Serie unter dem wachsamen Auge des Produzenten eingehen. Das 5. Kapitel schenkt dem Hauptdarsteller Horst Tappert - dem Star der Serie - die ganze Aufmerksamkeit. In Kapitel 6 werde ich die Serialitat des Fernsehens thematisieren, da anzunehmen ist, dass gerade Serien durch ihre konstante Wiederkehr ein weiterer Erfolgsgarant im Programmfluss sind. Daran anschliessend fragen die Kapitel 7 und 8 nach den Rezipienten - hier und anderswo - und deren dauerhafter Zuschauergunst. Das 2. Kapitel versteht sich als eine weiterfuhrende Einleitung zur Unterhaltung im Fernsehen, denn trotz aller Erklarungsversuche ist die Serie in erster Linie unterhaltsam. Schlussendlich werde ich ein Erfolgsfazit ziehen und meine Erkenntnisse darstellen. Diese Arbeit arbeitet nicht mit nur einer Sicht der Dinge. Die Perspektiven, mit denen ich mich dem Thema der Erfolgssuche versuche zu nahern, werden sowohl sozial- kultur- und gesellschaftskritische, psychologische und medienwissenschaftliche als auch politisch-historische Ansatze miteinander vermengen. Meines Erachtens kann eine ganzheitliche Herangehensweise der Komplexitat des Themas am ehesten gerecht werden. Die Fotografien von Reinhard Matz und Dirk Reinartz entstanden in den Jahren 1987 bis 1992 bzw. 1993. Erich Hartmanns Fotografien sind von 1993/94. Die drei daraus entstandenen Fotografiebande bieten sich, aufgrund einiger wesentlicher Gemeinsamkeiten, fur eine vergleichende Betrachtung an. Bei allen Bildbanden handelt es sich um Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografien, die mit einer Kleinbildkamera aufgenommen wurden. Alle Bucher zeigen Abbildungen der gleichen Orte. Daruberhinaus ist die Menschenleere der Fotografien eine auffallige Parallele. Um die unterschiedlichen Positionen der Fotografiebande innerhalb einer deutschen Holocaust-Gedenkkultur einordnen zu konnen, werden die Bildbande in Kapitel 2 chronologisch vom Anfang bis zum Ende jeden Buches untersucht und vergleichende Bezuge aufgebaut. Die fur die weitere Arbeit relevanten Schlussfolgerungen werden am Ende jeder Buchbeschreibung zusammengefasst. Es lassen sich drei verschiedene Buchkonzeptionen erkennen, die ihrerseits von drei unterschiedlichen visuellen Strategien unterstutzt werden und zu differierenden Standpunkten fuhren. Im Bildband Stumme Zeugen von Erich Hartmann wird uber die Reihenfolge der Fotografien eine abgeschlossene Geschichte aus der Sicht des ehemaligen Opfers erzahlt. In dem Buch totenstill mit Fotografien von Dirk Reinartz und Texten von Christian Graf von Krockow ergibt sich die Betroffenheitsperspektive eines Westdeutschen Nachgeborenen aus der Text mit Bild verschrankten Konzeption.

In 1888, Thomas Edison announced that he was experimenting on "an instrument which does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear, which is the recording and reproduction of things in motion." Just as Edison s investigations were framed in terms of the known technologies of the phonograph and the microscope, the essays in this collection address the contexts of innovation and reception that have framed the development of moving images in the last 100 years. Three concerns are of particular interest: the contexts of innovation and reception for moving image technologies; the role of the observer, whose vision and cognitive processes define some of the limits of inquiry and epistemological insight; and the role of new media, which, engaging with the domestic sphere as cultural interface, are transforming our understanding of public and private spheres.

By using photography as a storytelling medium, the cinematographer plays a key role in translating a screenplay into images and capturing the director's vision of a film. Die Annahme der strikten Trennung von Subjektivitat, Inszenierung und Manipulation von Wirklichkeit einerseits und Objektivitat, Dokumentation, Authentizitat und Abbildtreue gegenuber dem Aufgenommenen andererseits stellt die vorliegende Arbeit kritisch in Frage. Anhand der Entwicklung der Dokumentarphotographie wird chronologisch der Frage nachgegangen, ob sich in den Arbeiten der als bedeutende Dokumentaristen geltenden Photographen ebenfalls bildgestaltende Elemente und inszenierende Praktiken finden lassen. Dazu werden verschiedene Arten dokumentarischer Photographie wie z.B. Kriegsphotographie, sozialkritische Photographie und Pressephotographie aufgegriffen und durchleuchtet. Anhand der Darstellung der Arbeitsweisen bedeutender Vertreter der jeweiligen "Gattung" und der jeweiligen Epoche sowie anhand von begleitendem Bildmaterial wird die Annahme bestatigt, dass in der sogenannten Dokumentarphotographie von Anfang an arrangierte und konstruierte Elemente eine grosse Rolle gespielt haben. Zum Vergleich werden Techniken und (Bild-) Beispiele sogenannter Kunstphotographen aufgefuhrt. Unter dem Aspekt: "inwieweit ist Photographie uberhaupt imstande Wirklichkeit, Objektivitat und Wahrheit abzubilden?" werden dabei auch unterschiedliche Standpunkte verschiedener (Kunst-) Theoretiker dargestellt. Am Beispiel z.Z. tatiger Bildjournalisten wird gezeigt, dass die Einmischung in die (Bild-)Wirklichkeit heute ebenfalls ein aktuelles Thema ist. Krasilovsky presents interviews with 23 camerawomen, most of whom are pioneers in Hollywood and whose experiences cover the full range of the Camera Department. Motion pictures were first seen in 1894, when Thomas Edison introduced the Kinetoscope, a device for individually looking at film through a viewer. Over the next three years, Edison manufactured almost 1,000 Kinetoscopes and produced some 250 films to show in them. A million people worldwide first saw motion pictures through these devices.

This book describes in detail how Kinetoscopes worked and how they were sold, and describes the parlors to which the public flocked, fascinated by the novelty of moving images.
