Recommended age: 10 - 13 years. We know about Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. But we owe nearly as much to Galen, a physician born in 129 A.D. at the height of the Roman Empire. Galen's acute diagnoses of patients, his botanical wisdom and studies of physiology were recorded in numerous books, handed down through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He developed sports medicine, doctoring gladiators. Not least, Galen passed on the medical tradition of respect for life. In this fascinating biography for young people, Jeanne Bendick brings Galen's Roman world alive with the clarity, humor, and outstanding content we enjoyed in Archimedes and the Door to Science. An excellent addition to schools, libraries, and homes; ideal for home education.

How do you sum upthe world's amazing inventions in just 100 words?
This striking book takes on the challenge! From helicopters to
fireworks, each of the carefully chosen 100 words has its own
100-word long description and quirky illustration, providing a

pencil imagine how such seemingly simple objects would have been
groundbreaking at the time of invention; whereas some inventions,
such as skates, had a very funny beginning! With a clean,
contemporary design, each word occupies a page of its own. A large
striking illustration neatly encapsulates the accompanying 100
words of text. Other titles in the 100 Things to Know About series

This guidebook is designed to be the middle-level teacher's friend
in addressing a wide variety of questions regarding the use of
educational and instructional technologies. It can serve as a
companion and guide through the myriad challenges and opportunities
related to the effective use of technology in one's classroom and
school. A sample of middle level U.S. teachers provided us with
detailed answers about their experiences with using technology in
their teaching. Specifically, they shared their challenges,
barriers, ideas, and suggestions for working successfully with
administrators, technology specialists, students, fellow teachers,
and parents when teaching with technology. We have organized the
teachers' experiences and recommendations according to each
stakeholder. Rather than recommending or reviewing specific
educational technology companies, applications, or tools, we
provide a large number of strategies that are "built to last" and
should be applicable regardless of the specific tool under
consideration. We assume that it doesn't ultimately matter what the
tool or technology is that you're using-it's how and why you're
using it for teaching and learning that will determine whether it
is successful or not. The "how" and "why" aspects encompass the
built-to- last strategies included in this guidebook.
All animals have adaptations that help them survive. From webbed
feet to sharp spines, learn all about the ways animals adapt to
life in their habitats.
