In the 5 years since the publication of Urologic Laparoscopy by the Japanese Society of Endourology and ESWL, the field has moved on apace, particularly technologically. It is with an eye on the need to disseminate the latest information on this progress that this collection has been assembled, highlighting the most recent advances in laparoscopic urologic oncology surgery. With treatment options becoming ever more complicated, it is essential to keep the prime objectives in mind - improved quality of life for the patient, minimal complications, early convalescence, and a better end result. In our effort to cover a broad range of techniques from renal cyst decortication to robotic laparoscopic camera control, we are in debt to surgeons at the forefront of treatment, not only in Japan but worldwide, and to manufacturers who are constantly innovating in their equipment. The contributors are enthusiastic in their expertise, as shown in the quality of the material they have produced.

Alexander N Sencha, Yury N Patrunov
R4,266 Discovery Miles 42 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the diagnosis of a wide variety of pathologies. Sonography reliably identifies a wide range of diseases, and the efficacy of modern ultrasound has dramatically improved with contrast enhancement. This book covers almost all aspects of CEUS starting from basic principles and ending with features of its application in individual organs. In particular, it explores the diseases of abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic organs as well as superficial structures, highlighting the characteristic features of typical findings. Focal lesions are discussed in depth, with attention to their early detection and differential diagnosis. Besides, a practical approach to the stratification of the risk of malignancies is provided. The authors summarized their own experience with CEUS in oncology, hepatology, gynecology, urology, endocrinology, and other fields of medicine. The role of CEUS in differential diagnosis of various disorders of the female reproductive system is comprehensively discussed as well. The presentation is clear and concise, and richly illustrated. The book will be a helpful tool for both residents and practitioners approaching ultrasound diagnostics, as well for more experienced radiologists and other professionals.

In all varieties of organ transplants, early results have dramatically improved over the past two decades and failures due to acute rejection are becoming rarer. Efficient immunosuppressive regimens have been developed with the objective of very good results at 1, 3 and 5 years. Successful transplants, however, are significantly less frequent at 10 and 20 years, and many patients require retransplantation. Many factors are involved in late graft loss and it is now well recognized that, in addition to chronic rejection, a number of non-immunologic factors play a prominent role. In the case of renal transplantation, a reduced mass loss (transplantation of a single kidney, sometimes from an aged donor, ischemic injury and alteration of some nephrons in the case of early acute rejection) will result in slowly progressing chronic renal failure, even in the absence of any supplementary attack of an immunological nature. The new treatments must be analyzed in the light of their capacity to reduce these late failures. Several preventive measures can also limit both immunologic and non-immunologic factors of late transplant deterioration.

Urological Cancers (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Jonathan Waxman Urological Cancers (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Jonathan Waxman
R7,642 Discovery Miles 76 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our understanding of the scientific basis for urothelial malignancy has advanced significantly. Studies in prostate cancer, few and far between 20 years ago, have increased and the degree of Government intervention, both in Europe and America, to support work in this field has risen considerably. Interest too has grown from the pharmaceutical industry, and this has led to the development of new treatment options for all of the urological malignancies and real improvements in remission rates and durations. This book outlines developments in all areas of urological cancer, bringing together summaries of clinical and molecular advances in one volume, which will be invaluable to urologists and oncologists.

Treatment of Urolithiasis (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): M. Akimoto, E. Higashihara, H Kumon, Z. Masaki, S. Orikasa Treatment of Urolithiasis (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
M. Akimoto, E. Higashihara, H Kumon, Z. Masaki, S. Orikasa
R1,538 Discovery Miles 15 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Urolithiasis is not only one of the most frequently encountered diseases at uro logical clinics; it is also the disorder whose treatment has shown the most rapid progress in the past decade. In that period, medicine has experienced a real revolution, characterized by minimally invasive treatments, improvement of the quality of life, and cost-effectiveness in treatment outcomes. In urology, the revolution started with the development of endoscopic retrograde treatment of urolithiasis in the upper urinary tract, which led to development of the percuta neous antegrade maneuver in the latter half of the 1970s. The most remarkable event occurred in 1982, when clinical use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was introduced by the Munich group, represented by Dr. Christian Chaussy, at the 18th Congress of the International Society of Urology in San Francisco. With the advent of these new strategies, open surgery for urolithiasis has all but dis appeared. Today, with the availability of new technology and equipment, guide lines for the treatment of urolithiasis have changed in all developed countries. It is quite timely that the Meeting of International Consultation on Urolithiasis will be held in Paris in June 2001 to establish international guidelines for urolithiasis. Looking through this textbook for urolithiasis, I was greatly impressed to learn that we have already drawn up some guidelines. The book includes all the updated advances of urolithiasis presented by the most prominent and experi enced urologists from all around the world.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (Paperback, New): Alexander Bachmann, Jean De la Rosette Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (Paperback, New)
Alexander Bachmann, Jean De la Rosette
R744 Discovery Miles 7 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is considered to be one of the most important topics in urology and afflicts millions of older men world-wide. Although it is not life threatening, its clinical manifestation as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) reduces the patient's quality of life over many years. Patients often suffer from LUTS due to BPH for a long time. If left untreated, the patients are at significant risk of potentially severe complications. Over the last decade, new diagnostic approaches and treatment options such as prostate lasers have become more accepted in the urological community. This pocketbook provides an update of several aspects related with BPH / LUTS and covers the entire background, diagnostic process and treatment options available to patients suffering from LUTS due to BPH. It will give trainees in urology and general physicians a quick, concise but complete overview of diagnostic processes and recommended treatment options.

Laurence S. Baskin, Simon W. Hayward
R6,005 Discovery Miles 60 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of Bladder Research Congress, San Francisco, California, April 23-25, 1998, was to provide a forum for authoritative investigators who are actively involved in the various disciplines which define the leading edges of bladder research. It is important for such investigators to continue to meet regularly for the purpose of discussing the latest developments in their individual fields, to analyze the significance of current research, to discuss new tactics for unresolved problems, to critically evaluate current theories, and to develop new theories and approaches as needed. The two and a half day meeting was organized into five half day sessions, with each session encompassing one of five topics: (1) Epithelial-Mesenchymal Interactions; (2) Ex tracellular Matrix and Muscle; (3) Nerves and Pharmacology; (4) Infection and Immunol ogy; and (5) Oncology. Each session was introduced by a moderator followed by five to six invited expert speakers with time for extensive interaction from the participants. Two late-afternoon poster sessions allowed further interactions between investigators. This book documents the proceedings of the Bladder Research Congress. It is organ ized into the five half-day sessions of the meeting with moderators overview and an edited transcription of discussions that followed each presentation. I would like to thank Sarah Burke and the Office of Continuing Medical Education, USCF; Joanne Hayward, Editorial Assistant; and Miriam Escamilla, Administrative Assis tant. A History of Prostate Cancer - Cancer, Men and Medicine (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Helen Valier A History of Prostate Cancer - Cancer, Men and Medicine (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Helen Valier
R2,628 Discovery Miles 26 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a comprehensive and inclusive insight into the history of prostate cancer and its sufferers. Until recently, little practical help could be offered for men afflicted with the devastating diseases of the genitourinary organs. This is despite complaints of painful urination from aging men being found in ancient medical manuscripts, despite the anatomical discoveries of the European Renaissance and despite the experimental surgical researches of the eighteen and nineteenth centuries. As diseases of the prostate, including prostate cancer, came to be better understood in the early twentieth century, therapeutic nihilism continued as curative radical surgeries and radiotherapy failed. The therapeutic 'turn' came with hormonal therapies, itself a product of the explosive growth of U.S. biomedicine from the 1940s onwards. By the 1990s, prostate cancer screening had become a somewhat ubiquitous but controversial feature of the medical encounter for American men as they aged, which greatly influenced the treatment pathways and identity of the male patient: as victim, as hero, and ultimately, as consumer.
