XIIIth International Symposium on Spermatology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Lars Bjoerndahl, John Flanagan, Rebecka Holmberg,... XIIIth International Symposium on Spermatology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Lars Bjoerndahl, John Flanagan, Rebecka Holmberg, Ulrik Kvist
R5,874 Discovery Miles 58 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

These proceedings of the 2018 XIII International Symposium on Spermatology focus on comparative biology, and encourages discussion and the exchange of ideas. The aim of this Symposium was to provide a unique opportunity and bring together scientists from a wide spectrum of research fields - human, domestic animals and other mammals, vertebrates, insects, and plants. The underlying focus is on the function of the spermatozoon - a common feature for sexual reproduction, but extremely varied. By exploring the variability, a better understanding of male reproductive functions can develop. These proceedings address the mechanisms of physiology and pathophysiology, rather than diagnosis and treatment. The symposium featured keynote lectures by invited speakers, followed by presentations on specific aspects of the general topic of the session. Experimental studies are given priority over clinical studies of patient populations. The proceedings comprise both keynote speakers' texts and selected free communications. Posters were considered for publication in the proceedings, and the volume includes exhibited materials on the work of prominent spermatologists, highlighting their important past achievements in the field.

Alexander N Sencha, Yury N Patrunov
R4,015 Discovery Miles 40 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the diagnosis of a wide variety of pathologies. Sonography reliably identifies a wide range of diseases, and the efficacy of modern ultrasound has dramatically improved with contrast enhancement. This book covers almost all aspects of CEUS starting from basic principles and ending with features of its application in individual organs. In particular, it explores the diseases of abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic organs as well as superficial structures, highlighting the characteristic features of typical findings. Focal lesions are discussed in depth, with attention to their early detection and differential diagnosis. Besides, a practical approach to the stratification of the risk of malignancies is provided. The authors summarized their own experience with CEUS in oncology, hepatology, gynecology, urology, endocrinology, and other fields of medicine. The role of CEUS in differential diagnosis of various disorders of the female reproductive system is comprehensively discussed as well. The presentation is clear and concise, and richly illustrated. The book will be a helpful tool for both residents and practitioners approaching ultrasound diagnostics, as well for more experienced radiologists and other professionals.

Erectile Dysfunction (Paperback): Ernst R. Schwarz Erectile Dysfunction (Paperback)
Ernst R. Schwarz
R1,641 Discovery Miles 16 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The estimated prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) ranges from 15 - 50 million men in the United States alone, with all age groups of men affected. Despite still-existing taboos surrounding male impotence, more men are seeking help and treatment with the advent of newer treatment options in recent years, most notably oral PDE-5 inhibitors that shed light on the primary vascular cause and treatment target in most cases. In the majority of men, ED has a physical cause and can be effectively treated. Increased knowledge of cause and treatment options, however, requires clinicians to become acquainted with side effects of drugs, alternative treatments, new research in the field, and potential disease conditions that might co-exist with ED. Part of the Oxford American Urology Library, this practical manual illuminates the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction and approaches to diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic options, including specifics of ED in men with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. All currently available treatment options from prostaglandins to vacuum devices, PDE-5 inhibitors, and interventional and surgical therapies are described for their efficacy and safety based on the published literature and ongoing research trials.

In all varieties of organ transplants, early results have dramatically improved over the past two decades and failures due to acute rejection are becoming rarer. Efficient immunosuppressive regimens have been developed with the objective of very good results at 1, 3 and 5 years. Successful transplants, however, are significantly less frequent at 10 and 20 years, and many patients require retransplantation. Many factors are involved in late graft loss and it is now well recognized that, in addition to chronic rejection, a number of non-immunologic factors play a prominent role. In the case of renal transplantation, a reduced mass loss (transplantation of a single kidney, sometimes from an aged donor, ischemic injury and alteration of some nephrons in the case of early acute rejection) will result in slowly progressing chronic renal failure, even in the absence of any supplementary attack of an immunological nature. The new treatments must be analyzed in the light of their capacity to reduce these late failures. Several preventive measures can also limit both immunologic and non-immunologic factors of late transplant deterioration.

Koro - Clinical and Historical Developments of the Culturally Defined Genital Retraction Disorder (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021):... Koro - Clinical and Historical Developments of the Culturally Defined Genital Retraction Disorder (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Arabinda Narayan Chowdhury
R3,175 Discovery Miles 31 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a definitive account of koro, a topic of long-standing interest in the field of cultural psychiatry in which the patient displays a fear of the genitals shrinking and retracting. Written by Professor A.N. Chowdhury, a leading expert in the field, it provides a comprehensive overview of the cultural, historical and clinical significance of the condition that includes both cutting-edge critique and an analysis of research and accounts from the previous 120 years published literature. The book begins by outlining the definition, etymology of the term, and clinical features of koro as a culture-bound syndrome, and contextualizes the concept with reference to its historical origins and local experience in Southeast Asia, and its subsequent widespread occurrence in South Asia. It also critically examines the concept of culture-bound disorder and the development of the terminology, such as cultural concepts of distress, which is the term that is currently used in the DSM-5. Subsequent chapters elaborate the cultural context of koro in Chinese and South Asian cultures, including cultural symbolic analysis of associations with animals (fox and turtle) and phallic imagery based on troubling self-perceived aspects of body image that is central to the concept. The second section of the book offers a comprehensive, global literature review, before addressing the current status and relevance of koro, clinically relevant questions of risk assessment and forensic issues, and research methodology. This landmark work will provide a unique resource for clinicians and researchers working in cultural psychiatry, cultural psychology, anthropology, medical sociology, social work and psychosexual medicine.

Treatment of Urolithiasis (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): M. Akimoto, E. Higashihara, H Kumon, Z. Masaki, S. Orikasa Treatment of Urolithiasis (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
M. Akimoto, E. Higashihara, H Kumon, Z. Masaki, S. Orikasa
R1,423 Discovery Miles 14 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Urolithiasis is not only one of the most frequently encountered diseases at uro logical clinics; it is also the disorder whose treatment has shown the most rapid progress in the past decade. In that period, medicine has experienced a real revolution, characterized by minimally invasive treatments, improvement of the quality of life, and cost-effectiveness in treatment outcomes. In urology, the revolution started with the development of endoscopic retrograde treatment of urolithiasis in the upper urinary tract, which led to development of the percuta neous antegrade maneuver in the latter half of the 1970s. The most remarkable event occurred in 1982, when clinical use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was introduced by the Munich group, represented by Dr. Christian Chaussy, at the 18th Congress of the International Society of Urology in San Francisco. With the advent of these new strategies, open surgery for urolithiasis has all but dis appeared. Today, with the availability of new technology and equipment, guide lines for the treatment of urolithiasis have changed in all developed countries. It is quite timely that the Meeting of International Consultation on Urolithiasis will be held in Paris in June 2001 to establish international guidelines for urolithiasis. Looking through this textbook for urolithiasis, I was greatly impressed to learn that we have already drawn up some guidelines. The book includes all the updated advances of urolithiasis presented by the most prominent and experi enced urologists from all around the world.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (Paperback, New): Alexander Bachmann, Jean De la Rosette Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (Paperback, New)
Alexander Bachmann, Jean De la Rosette
R704 Discovery Miles 7 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is considered to be one of the most important topics in urology and afflicts millions of older men world-wide. Although it is not life threatening, its clinical manifestation as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) reduces the patient's quality of life over many years. Patients often suffer from LUTS due to BPH for a long time. If left untreated, the patients are at significant risk of potentially severe complications. Over the last decade, new diagnostic approaches and treatment options such as prostate lasers have become more accepted in the urological community. This pocketbook provides an update of several aspects related with BPH / LUTS and covers the entire background, diagnostic process and treatment options available to patients suffering from LUTS due to BPH. It will give trainees in urology and general physicians a quick, concise but complete overview of diagnostic processes and recommended treatment options.

Advances in Bladder Research (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Laurence S. Baskin, Simon W. Hayward Advances in Bladder Research (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Laurence S. Baskin, Simon W. Hayward
R5,538 Discovery Miles 55 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The aim of Bladder Research Congress, San Francisco, California, April 23-25, 1998, was to provide a forum for authoritative investigators who are actively involved in the various disciplines which define the leading edges of bladder research. It is important for such investigators to continue to meet regularly for the purpose of discussing the latest developments in their individual fields, to analyze the significance of current research, to discuss new tactics for unresolved problems, to critically evaluate current theories, and to develop new theories and approaches as needed. The two and a half day meeting was organized into five half day sessions, with each session encompassing one of five topics: (1) Epithelial-Mesenchymal Interactions; (2) Ex tracellular Matrix and Muscle; (3) Nerves and Pharmacology; (4) Infection and Immunol ogy; and (5) Oncology. Each session was introduced by a moderator followed by five to six invited expert speakers with time for extensive interaction from the participants. Two late-afternoon poster sessions allowed further interactions between investigators. This book documents the proceedings of the Bladder Research Congress. It is organ ized into the five half-day sessions of the meeting with moderators overview and an edited transcription of discussions that followed each presentation. I would like to thank Sarah Burke and the Office of Continuing Medical Education, USCF; Joanne Hayward, Editorial Assistant; and Miriam Escamilla, Administrative Assis tant. I hope you find this resource useful. Laurence S. Baskin, M.D."

Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Metabolic Homeostasis, Diabetes and Obesity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Franck Mauvais-Jarvis Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Metabolic Homeostasis, Diabetes and Obesity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Franck Mauvais-Jarvis
R7,811 Discovery Miles 78 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book provides a reference for years to come, written by world-renowned expert investigators studying sex differences, the role of sex hormones, the systems biology of sex, and the genetic contribution of sex chromosomes to metabolic homeostasis and diseases. In this volume, leaders of the pharmaceutical industry present their views on sex-specific drug discovery. Many of the authors presented at the Keystone Symposium on "Sex and gender factors affecting metabolic homeostasis, diabetes and obesity" to be held in March 2017 in Lake Tahoe, CA. This book will generate new knowledge and ideas on the importance of gender biology and medicine from a molecular standpoint to the population level and to provide the methods to study them. It is intended to be a catalyst leading to gender-specific treatments of metabolic diseases. There are fundamental aspects of metabolic homeostasis that are regulated differently in males and females, and influence both the development of diabetes and obesity and the response to pharmacological intervention. Still, most preclinical researchers avoid studying female rodents due to the added complexity of research plans. The consequence is a generation of data that risks being relevant to only half of the population. This is a timely moment to publish a book on sex differences in diseases as NIH leadership has asked scientists to consider sex as a biological variable in preclinical research, to ensure that women get the same benefit of medical research as men.
