Endourology has developed significantly in recent years as a result of rapid change in surgical techniques and instruments. This eighth volume in the series Recent Advances in Endourology brings together the latest clinical findings regarding various endourological treatment modalities and innovative materials. In the past 30 years, transurethral resection of prostate, bladder, and ureteral tumors has been dramatically refined. Transurethral microwave thermotherapy has emerged as a nonsurgical option for the treatment of benign prostatic obstruction. Percutaneous surgery has changed significantly with the miniaturization of the endoscope, while the needle ablation technique, which decreases pain and shortens hospital stays, has become the treatment of choice for small renal cell tumors. In this book, world-recognized experts outline their techniques clearly and concisely to provide an updated review of state-of-the-art endourological techniques.
Bladder Pain Syndrome: A Guide for Clinicians provides a comprehensive update in the pathophysiology, epidemiology, terminology, evaluation and treatment of patients with pelvic pain perceived to be related to the urinary bladder. The volume covers the tremendous evolution during the last decade in our understanding of pain syndromes and their diagnosis and treatment. It is now clear that Bladder Pain Syndrome belongs to the family of pain syndromes, and therefore treatment has moved from the treatment of the bladder to the treatment of a pain syndrome with the special problems this presents when the pain syndrome involves urinary symptoms. Interstitial Cystitis was poorly defined and the interpretation and patient selection differed enormously around the world in many ways making exchange of information unreliable and confusing. Bladder Pain Syndrome is clearly defined and the result is a much better patient selection. This volume provides state of the art background for making a correct evaluation and diagnosis of patients with pelvic pain and voiding problems resulting in a more focused treatment to the benefit of the patients. The volume also covers the close relationship between different pain syndromes including those outside the pelvis.Bladder Pain Syndrome: A Guide for Clinicians will be of great utility to urologists, gynecologists and all health professionals dealing with patients with pelvic pain.
In the last decade, much of the clinical interest in the field of infertility has focused on advancing reproductive techniques and has often under-appreciated the role that male sexuality plays in reproductive problems. Male sexual function is an integral part of reproduction, and the treatment of sexual dysfunction is an important component for any couple seeking fertility. In some cases, treatment of sexual dysfunction may obviate the need for more invasive cures through advanced reproductive techniques. Thanks to recent clinical and scientific advances in male sexual medicine, the management of men's sexual dysfunction is often more effective and less invasive than how it was historically described. Men's Sexual Health and Fertility is the only resource that focuses on the interplay and interconnections between male sexual dysfunction and male factor infertility, gathering insightful data from a panel of experts in male sexual medicine for clinicians who treat couples with fertility issues due to male sexual dysfunction. Chapters discuss advances in the field of men's sexual medicine, including the latest treatment for erectile dysfunction, the most up-to-date understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of ejaculation, and the growing body of evidence that low testosterone and male infertility are intimately related. As such, this book provides important information in order to be able to better understand the link between sexual dysfunction and infertility and, most importantly, to better treat male sexual dysfunction in the infertile couple.
A number of chapters present the most novel research on testicular and epididymal functions or on more general fields of hormone action and molecular cell biology as it is now a tradition. However, exceptionally, the book also contains several chapters dealing with the "Approaches and Tools in the Third Millenium." The unusual inclusion of technologies as such in the 2000 edition of the workshop was an absolute necessity, as these technologies are revolutionizing the fields of biology and medicine and, in many instances, how to do research. This volume gives the scientific community essential information about the very latest technical developments and their potential for future progress.
The Atlas of Robotic Urologic Surgery provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to common robotic urologic procedures for the purpose of helping novice surgeons in their transition to robotic surgery and seasoned robotic surgeons to refine their surgical technique and expand their repertoire of robotic procedures. In addition, less commonly performed robotic procedures such as those for male infertility, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary tract reconstruction and pediatrics are included. Each chapter is written by the thought leaders in robotic urologic surgery with descriptive step-by-step text, complimented by figures and intraoperative photographs detailing the nuances of each procedure. Emphasis is placed on operative setup, instrument and equipment needs and surgical techniques for both the primary surgeon as well as the operative assistant. The use of ancillary equipment and robotic instrument and endoscope exchanges are highlighted throughout the procedural text by tables designed to aid surgeons and their teams in improving efficiency. This volume will provide unique insights into robotic urologic surgery and reduce the learning curve of accomplishing these increasingly popular procedures.
Complications of Female Incontinence and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery reviews the prevention, evaluation and management of complications arising from female pelvic surgery. Potential complications of both routine and specialized female pelvic procedures such as transvaginal slings, cystocele and rectocele repairs, urethral diverticulectomy, and transvaginal mesh repairs are reviewed. The chapters are divided by procedure allowing the reader to easily find what they are looking for. Images and figures of methods of evaluation and repair of these complications are included throughout. The volume is organized based on the specific types of surgeries performed and the user is able to look up the type of surgery performed and immediately find all of the potential complications and their treatments. This text will serve as a comprehensive guide and reference allowing the surgeon quick and ready access to information about the complications of female pelvic surgery.
There is no single certification system available Nationally or Internationally for Urological Laparoscopy. Skill training and certification are needed to protect both patients and doctors from the pitfalls of uncertified practice. The book focuses on the details of training within this field. The next step will be to agree nationally and internationally how to assess and certify the skills attained through training in Laparoscopic Urology. The Training Courses of Urological Laparoscopy takes experts in Laparoscopic Urology together from across the world to share their ideas and experience of training, from basic stems in the dry lab through to hints and tricks for problem solving in complex scenarios. The editors want to make this contribution to the literature with the aim to shortly establish robust assessment and certification globally for Laparoscopic Urologists.
Robotic Renal Surgery: Benign and Malignant Surgery for the Kidneys and Ureters provides a comprehensive review of the role of and technical considerations regarding robotic surgery for conditions of the kidney and associated conditions of the upper urinary tract. In addition to serving as a reference regarding indications, preoperative and postoperative management, complications, and evidence-based outcomes, this text also serves as a practical guide for surgeons in how to perform the complete array of robotic kidney and upper tract surgery. Included are detailed descriptions of positioning, instrumentation, and surgical steps for the surgeon newly adopting robotic surgery or for those refining their techniques. All chapters are written by recognized and published experts in the various techniques, creating an authoritative text on the subject. Robotic Renal Surgery: Benign and Malignant Surgery for the Kidneys and Ureters will be of great value to urologists, robotic surgeons, fellows in urologic oncology or endourology as well as urology residents in training and surgical nurses and other surgery team members involved in these procedures.
Western Medicine as seen today has a strong scientific basis in its development. The pathogenesis of most diseases and their symptomatology and physical signs are well studied and understood. The management of patients is based on firm understanding of these disease processes. In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine came about through the experience of many generations of practitioners over thousands of years. Undoubtedly, many of these treatments have proved to be effective in their own way, however, firm scientific basis is still lacking.
During the past quarter century there has been a renaissance of interest in the use of peritoneal dialysis as the primary dialytic modality for the treatment of children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The development of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (APD) has facilitated the provision of prolonged dialysis to infants, children and adolescents and has provided pediatric nephrologists worldwide with a real opportunity to administer effective dialysis therapy to all patients afflicted with ESRD. It has been more than a decade since the initial publication of CAPD/CCPD in Children. In the interim, a great deal of clinical experience with patients receiving peritoneal dialysis has been accumulated and research efforts have substantially increased our understanding of the technique. Therefore, we felt that a second edition of CAPD/CCPD in Children was propitious to update the advances of the past decade.
Providing a true integration of pathology with clinical management, this volume presents a practical, comprehensive text on benign and malignant disease of the adult bladder. Integrating pathology, surgical management, oncology and molecular study in a site-specific manner to include the urethra, urinary bladder, ureter and renal pelvis, The Urinary Tract: A Comprehensive Guide to Patient Diagnosis and Management is the first text in adult bladder disease to closely interweave multiple clinical disciplines into each chapter. For the majority of chapters, a pathologist and urologist or urologic oncologist are paired to provide the greatest integration of information for each disease process.
Clinical Research Methods for Surgeons is a comprehensive guide for

A vast number of children in the United States are evaluated and treated for urologic conditions by urologists practicing general urology due to the relatively few fellowship-trained pediatric urologists. Pediatric Urology: A General Urologist's Guide is written specifically for general urologists as a concise and comprehensive reference of the more common pediatric urologic conditions. Other health practitioners (i.e. pediatrician, family practitioner, residents, medical students, and mid-level providers) will also find this book a key reference. Written by well-respected pediatric urologists, this volume will assist the health care provider to rapidly review the essential aspects of the physical examination, evaluation, diagnostic testing, and management while the patient is still in the office. The chapters are arranged into four sections to allow for easier access to the information: office urology, genitalia, urinary tract, and miscellaneous topics. Furthermore, the first chapter of the book will be dedicated to facts and figures (ex. normal penile and renal lengths based on age, dosing of common medications, and grading system for vesicoureteral reflux) that serves as a single source for this information. Pediatric Urology: A General Urologist's Guide offers the reader the essential information to assist them in the care of children.

The subspecialty of genitourinary or pelvic pain suffers from the lack of objective data and level-1 evidence. Genitourinary Pain and Inflammation: Diagnosis and Management of GU-ITIS is a compilation of skilled creativity based upon critical review of the literature, consensus reports, and professional experiences. It includes detailed chapters that address iatrogenic causes of GU inflammation, caused by catheters, prosthetics, radiation, or chemotherapy. Chapters in Genitourinary Pain and Inflammation: Diagnosis and Management of GU-ITIS also discuss pain syndromes specific to the pelvic floor and the genitourinary system from several perspectives. Experts in the urological and gastrointestinal fields provide the specifics for gaining the basic understanding of inflammation and pains caused by infectious etiologies.
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the diagnosis of a wide variety of pathologies. Sonography reliably identifies a wide range of diseases, and the efficacy of modern ultrasound has dramatically improved with contrast enhancement. This book covers almost all aspects of CEUS starting from basic principles and ending with features of its application in individual organs. In particular, it explores the diseases of abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic organs as well as superficial structures, highlighting the characteristic features of typical findings. Focal lesions are discussed in depth, with attention to their early detection and differential diagnosis. Besides, a practical approach to the stratification of the risk of malignancies is provided. The authors summarized their own experience with CEUS in oncology, hepatology, gynecology, urology, endocrinology, and other fields of medicine. The role of CEUS in differential diagnosis of various disorders of the female reproductive system is comprehensively discussed as well. The presentation is clear and concise, and richly illustrated. The book will be a helpful tool for both residents and practitioners approaching ultrasound diagnostics, as well for more experienced radiologists and other professionals.
In the 5 years since the publication of Urologic Laparoscopy by the Japanese Society of Endourology and ESWL, the field has moved on apace, particularly technologically. It is with an eye on the need to disseminate the latest information on this progress that this collection has been assembled, highlighting the most recent advances in laparoscopic urologic oncology surgery. With treatment options becoming ever more complicated, it is essential to keep the prime objectives in mind - improved quality of life for the patient, minimal complications, early convalescence, and a better end result. In our effort to cover a broad range of techniques from renal cyst decortication to robotic laparoscopic camera control, we are in debt to surgeons at the forefront of treatment, not only in Japan but worldwide, and to manufacturers who are constantly innovating in their equipment. The contributors are enthusiastic in their expertise, as shown in the quality of the material they have produced.
