Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the most common bacterial infections seen. Episodes of UTI can effectively be treated with antibiotics, often given on an empirical basis. In this book, the authors present current research in UTI's. Topics discussed in this compilation include the antibiotic and non-antibiotic methods of prophylaxis for recurrent UTI's; UTI's in children; virulence factors of uropathogenic Escherichia coli and their role in development of UTI's; and the treatment for UTI's due to multidrug-resistant bacteria.
This updated volume provides a concise guide to the pathogenic, therapeutic, and preventative roles of bacteria in urology. New chapters discussing the involvement of the microbiome in the areas of recurrent kidney stone disease, female urology, and prostate cancer are included. The treatment of urosepsis, stone management, genitourinary malignancy, stone sequencing, and the role of microbiome and virome in urology are also covered. The Role of Bacteria in Urology is relevant to both clinicians and scientists interested in the infection of the genitourinary system.

Operative urology has evolved in recent years to include laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical procedures, which have resulted in significant improvements in quality of life-related outcome. Nevertheless, training methods in urologic laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery vary considerably, and a structured training scheme is required to enable the modern urologist to adapt to and make optimal use of these techniques. Accordingly, the main goal of this surgical atlas is to guide the urologist carefully through all the standard laparoscopic and robot-assisted procedures. Each procedure is presented in detail with numerous supporting endoscopic images and diagrams. The reader is thereby acquainted with the different surgical steps and will acquire the knowledge necessary for reliable reproduction of the techniques in clinical practice.
Technology seems to be an integral part of modern living. Urologists have over the years embraced new technological advances for patient beneft. On some occasions, however, the initial enthusiasm in something new has failed to endure rigorous scientifc scrutiny. Thus, while being technological leaders, we urologists know better than most other surgical speci- ties that what is new is not necessarily good. This textbook is aimed at urologists and surgeons at all levels and has contributions from international experts. The topics vary from robotics to lasers to single port laparoscopy. The comprehensive chapters should be of equal interest to uro-oncologists and those involved in treating benign urological diseases. While the contents are meant to bring the reader up to date with technological advances, the authors have attempted to balance their enthusiasm with basic science, translational research, and clinical outcomes. It will be obvious that some of the s- jects mentioned here, such as nanotechnology, are still evolving, and it will be a while before they undergo clinical trials that establish their position in clinical medicine. We hope you enjoy reading this book as much as we have enjoyed creating it. This book reveals the ever-present challenges of patient care at the forefront of medical knowledge. Syphilis and gonorrhoea played upon the public imagination in Victorian and Edwardian England, inspiring fascination and fear. Seemingly inextricable from the other great 'social evil', prostitution, these diseases represented contamination, both physical and moral. They infiltrated respectable homes and brought terrible suffering and stigma to those afflicted. Medicine, Knowledge and Venereal Diseases takes us back to an age before penicillin and the NHS, when developments in pathology, symptomology and aetiology were transforming clinical practice. This is the first book to examine systematically how doctors, nurses and midwives grappled with new ideas and laboratory-based technologies in their fight against venereal diseases in voluntary hospitals, general practice and Poor Law institutions. It opens up new perspectives on what made competent and safe medical professionals; how these standards changed over time; and how changing attitudes and expectations affected the medical authority and autonomy of different professional groups.
This book addresses various aspects of male reproduction ranging from mind to testis. The basis of maleness lies in the Y chromosome. Reproductive functions depend upon the development of male organs from embryo to manhood. Testis, the male gonad, produces hormones and sperms; the latter is ejaculated in semen secreted by accessory sex glands. The testicular events are under neuroendocrine regulation which coordinates reproductive life from puberty to andropause. Biology is as important as psychology in the control of reproduction. Behaviours are rooted in the brain. Various brain areas and neural circuits regulate male behaviours. Brain sexual polymorphism is the basis of homosexuality and transgenders. Neurophysiology has always been complex to understand. But, this book presents it in a simpler way. Reproductive organs receive systemic influences, too. The book describes roles of metabolic, immune and thyroid status in reproduction. The book has chapters on male reproductive pathophysiology. Principles of diagnosis and management are also included. The last section deals with contraception and yoga. The traditional wisdom of yoga has been used for millennia to enhance sexual and reproductive experience. This book will serve basic medical scientists, urologists, nephrologists, surgeons, andrologists, endocrinologists, gynaecologists, nurses, councellors and also the students of biological sciences who want to study reproduction in human male. The language is kept simple so that an inquisitive person with a background of biology too may read it.
