English and Translation in the European Union - Unity and Multiplicity in the Wake of Brexit (Paperback): Alice Leal English and Translation in the European Union - Unity and Multiplicity in the Wake of Brexit (Paperback)
Alice Leal
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the growing tension between multilingualism and monolingualism in the European Union in the wake of Brexit, underpinned by the interplay between the rise of English as a lingua franca and the effacement of translations in EU institutions, bodies and agencies. English and Translation in the European Union draws on an interdisciplinary approach, highlighting insights from applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, translation studies, philosophy of language and political theory, while also looking at official documents and online resources, most of which are increasingly produced in English and not translated at all - and the ones which are translated into other languages are not labelled as translations. In analysing this data, Alice Leal explores issues around language hierarchy and the growing difficulty in reconciling the EU's approach to promoting multilingualism while fostering monolingualism in practice through the diffusion of English as a lingua franca, as well as questions around authenticity in the translation process and the boundaries between source and target texts. The volume also looks ahead to the implications of Brexit for this tension, while proposing potential ways forward, encapsulated in the language turn, the translation turn and the transcultural turn for the EU. Offering unique insights into contemporary debates in the humanities, this book will be of interest to scholars in translation studies, applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, philosophy and political theory.

Rethinking EMI - Multidisciplinary Perspectives from Chinese-Speaking Regions (Paperback): Hintat Cheung, Jessica R. W. Wu,... Rethinking EMI - Multidisciplinary Perspectives from Chinese-Speaking Regions (Paperback)
Hintat Cheung, Jessica R. W. Wu, Lily I-Wen Su
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Due to the competitive edge it confers on students, educational institutions, and non-English speaking nations in a globalized economy, English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has been gaining popularity in tertiary education in non-native English-speaking (NNES) countries. Institute-wide EMI implementation has often been imposed by top-down decisions, in combination with the optimistic view that the horse should always be placed before the cart. However, emerging evidence suggests that the delivery of such programs to NNES students has led to new pedagogical challenges and learning problems that go beyond the scope of language learning and teaching and deserve immediate attention. For example, how would an instructor respond to situations in which students' learning of content is compromised by their limited language proficiency? This book draws on the current practice of EMI in diverse disciplines and university settings and examines how these new pedagogical and learning issues can be addressed. The discussion also involves a reflection on the essence of EMI in relation to the use of the first language (L1) as the medium of instruction in tertiary education. In addition, the book includes discussion about how to ensure and maintain the quality of EMI programs and assess the readiness of stakeholders for such programs, which include administrators, teachers, and students. The discussion is led by exemplars in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where the majority of students are native Chinese speakers, in the hope of developing critical perspectives and practical guidelines as references for EMI in other NNES settings. Reconceptualizing the Writing Practices of Multilingual Youth - Towards a Symbiotic Approach to In- and Out-of-School Writing... Reconceptualizing the Writing Practices of Multilingual Youth - Towards a Symbiotic Approach to In- and Out-of-School Writing (Paperback)
Youngjoo Yi
R634 Discovery Miles 6 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Focusing on adolescent multilingual writing, this text problematizes the traditional boundaries between academic writing in school contexts and self-initiated writing outside of the formal learning environment. By reconceptualizing the nature of adolescent multilingual writing, the author establishes it as an interdisciplinary genre and a key area of inquiry for research and pedagogy. Organized into six chapters, Reconceptualizing the Writing Practices of Multilingual Youth provides an in-depth examination of the writing practices of multilingual youth from sociocultural and social practice perspectives. Drawing on first-hand research conducted with young people, the text questions the traditional dichotomy between academic writing and non-formal equivalents and proposes a symbiotic approach to exploring and cultivating the connections between in- and out-of-school literate lives. By highlighting a bidirectional relationship between formal and informal writing, the text advocates for writing instruction that helps adolescents use writing for entertainment, identity construction, creative expression, personal well-being, and civic engagement, as well as helps them learn to navigate future literacies that we cannot imagine or predict now. This much-needed text will provide researchers and graduate students with a principled overview and synthesis of adolescent multilingual writing research that is significant yet underexplored in applied linguistics, TESOL, and literacy studies.

Multilingualism from Manuscript to 3D - Intersections of Modalities from Medieval to Modern Times (Hardcover): Elzbieta... Multilingualism from Manuscript to 3D - Intersections of Modalities from Medieval to Modern Times (Hardcover)
Elzbieta Adamczyk, Jukka Tyrkkoe, Matylda Wlodarczyk
R4,080 Discovery Miles 40 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection explores the links between multimodality and multilingualism, charting the interplay between languages, channels, and forms of communication in multilingual written texts from historical manuscripts through to the new media of today and the non-verbal associations they evoke. The volume argues that features of written texts such as graphics, layout, boundary marking, and typography are inseparable from verbal content. Taken together, the chapters adopt a systematic historical perspective to investigate this interplay over time and highlight the ways in which the two disciplines might further inform one another in the future as new technologies emerge. The first half of the volume considers texts where semiotic resources are the sites of modes, where multiple linguistic codes interact on the page and generate extralinguistic associations through visual features and spatial organization. The second half of the book looks at texts where this interface occurs not in the text but rather in the cultural practices involved in social materiality and text transmission. Enhancing our understandings of multimodal resources in both historical and contemporary communication, this book will be of interest to scholars in multimodality, multilingualism, historical communication, discourse analysis, and cultural studies.

R2,042 R929 Discovery Miles 9 290 Save R1,113 (55%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a critical exploration of definitions, methodologies and ideologies of English-medium instruction (EMI), contributing to new understandings of translanguaging as theory and pedagogy across diverse contexts. It brings together a number of conceptual and empirical studies on translanguaging in EMI at different educational levels, in a variety of countries, with different approaches to translanguaging, different named languages, and different policies. These studies include several underrepresented contexts across the globe, providing a broad view of how translanguaging in EMI is understood in these educational settings. Furthermore, this book addresses the complexities of translanguaging through a discussion of the affordances and constraints associated with the use of multiple linguistic resources in the EMI classroom.

Bilingual Education and Minority Language Maintenance in China - The Role of Schools in Saving the Yi Language (Hardcover, 1st... Bilingual Education and Minority Language Maintenance in China - The Role of Schools in Saving the Yi Language (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Lubei Zhang, Linda Tsung
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book looks closely at Yi bilingual education practice in the southwest of China from an educationalist's perspective and, in doing so, provides an insight toward our understanding of minority language maintenance and bilingual education implementation in China. The book provides an overview on the Yi people since 1949, their history, society, culture, customs and languages. Adopting the theory of language ecology, data was collected among different Yi groups and case studies were focused on Yi bilingual schools. By looking into the application of the Chinese government's multilingual language and education policy over the last 30 years with its underlying language ideology and practices the book reveals the de facto language policy by analyzing the language management at school level, the linguistic landscape around the Yi community, as well as the language attitude and cultural identities held by present Yi students, teachers and parents. The book is relevant for anyone looking to more deeply understand bilingual education and language maintenance in today's global context.

Multilingualism in the Andes - Policies, Politics, Power (Hardcover): Rosaleen Howard Multilingualism in the Andes - Policies, Politics, Power (Hardcover)
Rosaleen Howard
R4,085 Discovery Miles 40 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This illuminating book critically examines multicultural language politics and policymaking in the Andean-Amazonian countries of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, demonstrating how issues of language and power throw light on the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the state. Based on the author's research in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia over several decades, Howard draws comparisons over time and space. With due attention to history, the book's focus is situated in the years following the turn of the millennium, a period in which ideological shifts have affected continuity in official policy delivery even as processes of language shift from Indigenous languages such as Aymara and Quechua, to Spanish, have accelerated. The book combines in-depth description and analysis of state-level activity with ethnographic description of responses to policy on the ground. The author works with concepts of technologies of power and language regimentation to draw out the hegemonic workings of power as exercised through language policy creation at multiple scales. This book will be key reading for students and scholars of critical sociolinguistic ethnography, the history, society and politics of the Andean region, and linguistic anthropology, language policy and planning, and Latin American studies more broadly.

South African universities face major challenges in meeting the needs of their students in the area of academic language and literacy. The dominant medium of instruction in the universities is English and, to a much lesser extent, Afrikaans, but only a minority of the national population are native speakers of these languages. Nine other languages can be media of instruction in schools, which makes the transition to tertiary education difficult enough in itself for students from these schools. The focus of this book is on procedures for assessing the academic language and literacy levels and needs of students, not in order to exclude students from higher education but rather to identify those who would benefit from further development of their ability in order to undertake their degree studies successfully. The volume also aims to bring the innovative solutions designed by South African educators to a wider international audience.

Understanding and Improving how K-12 Multilinguals are Taught - Supporting Multilinguals (Hardcover): Maryann Hasso Understanding and Improving how K-12 Multilinguals are Taught - Supporting Multilinguals (Hardcover)
Maryann Hasso
R2,525 Discovery Miles 25 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding and Improving how K-12 Multilinguals are Taught: Supporting Multilinguals details instructional strategies that can be used to better assess multilingual learners which are more improved than the existing evaluations. The author argues that assessments for multilingual learners need to be improved due to inequities within the public-school systems, and that assessments for students in K12 schools are not equitable. The author also discusses strategies for welcoming and supporting multilingual learners in the classroom. The instructional strategies outlined for K12 educators includes offering students multiple test-taking options, ensuring that assessments are translated into students' respective languages, and allowing multilingual learners to take assessments in groups or pairs. These improvement strategies have been developed by using feedback from dual-language teachers in the K12 public school system. The assessment issues that will be addressed include inequity within assessments administered to multilingual learners, the way assessments are structured and developed at the district and school level, the consideration of the immigrant experience as these assessments are being developed, the roles of school boards in considering immigrant experiences while creating these assessments, the role of the teachers of multilingual learners, assessment strategies to support multilingual learners, and strategies that are effective in creating inclusive classrooms for native and multilingual English speakers.

Korean as a Heritage Language from Transnational and Translanguaging Perspectives (Hardcover): Hyesun Cho, Kwangok Song Korean as a Heritage Language from Transnational and Translanguaging Perspectives (Hardcover)
Hyesun Cho, Kwangok Song
R4,077 Discovery Miles 40 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection critically reflects on the state-of-the-art research on Korean-as-a-heritage-language (KHL) teaching and learning, centering KHL as an object of empirical inquiry by offering multiple perspectives on its practices and directions for further research. The volume expands prevailing notions of transnationalism and translanguaging by providing insights into the ways contemporary Korean immigrant and transnational families and individuals maintain their heritage language to participate in literary practices across borders. Experts from across the globe explore heritage language and literacy practices in Korean immigrant communities in varied geographic and educational contexts. In showcasing a myriad of perspectives across KHL research, the collection addresses such key questions as how heritage language learners' literacy practices impact their identities, how their families support KHL development at home, and what challenges and opportunities stakeholders need to consider in KHL education and in turn, heritage language education, more broadly. This book will be of interest to families, teachers, scholars, and language program administrators in Korean language education, heritage language education, applied linguistics, and bilingual education.

Cross-Linguistic Transfer of Writing Strategies - Interactions between Foreign Language and First Language Classrooms... Cross-Linguistic Transfer of Writing Strategies - Interactions between Foreign Language and First Language Classrooms (Hardcover)
Karen Forbes
R6,040 R3,016 Discovery Miles 30 160 Save R3,024 (50%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the context of increasingly multilingual global educational settings, this book provides a timely exploration of the phenomenon of cross-linguistic transfer of writing strategies (in particular, transfer from the foreign language to the first language) and presents a compelling case for a multilingual approach to writing pedagogy. The book presents evidence from a classroom-based intervention study conducted in a secondary school in England on cross-linguistic strategy transfer. It suggests that even beginner or low proficiency foreign language learners can develop effective skills and strategies in the foreign language classroom which can also positively influence writing in other languages, including their first language. This book ultimately encourages more joined-up, cross-curricular, cross-linguistic thinking related to language in schools by exploring the potential for collaboration between languages teachers.

Lisa M. Dorner, Deborah Palmer, Emily R. Crawford, Claudia G Cervantes-Soon, Dan Heiman
R1,247 Discovery Miles 12 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book features case studies that address dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs, which offer content instruction in two languages to help youth develop fluent bilingualism/biliteracy, high academic achievement, and sociocultural competence. While increasingly popular, the DLBE model is a framework that comes with unique hurdles and challenges. Applying a pioneering critical consciousness approach, the volume provides readers with narratives, awareness, and tools to support culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families. Organized around four major areas-policy, leadership, family and community engagement, teaching and teacher learning-the volume's case studies bring together stories from policymakers, educational leaders, family and community members, and teachers. The case studies spotlight examples in which power imbalances have been identified and shifted through critically conscious actions and offer insight into how to ensure all DLBE programs are nurturing, empowering, multilingual environments for all students, particularly racialized, immigrant, and transnational students. Accessible and varied, the case studies address important topics such as anti-Black racism, digital access, disability, school-district relations, working with undocumented families, and more. Each chapter includes a case narrative, teaching notes, discussion questions, and/or teaching activities to support stakeholders who wish to develop and enact equity in their DLBE policies, classrooms, and professional development. A key resource for supporting student needs and transformative inquiry in the classroom, this book is ideal for graduate students, professors, leaders, educators, and other stakeholders in bilingual education and language education.
