Fundamentals of Biofuels Engineering and Technology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Cataldo De Blasio Fundamentals of Biofuels Engineering and Technology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Cataldo De Blasio
R3,762 Discovery Miles 37 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the use of biomass as an energy source and its application in energy conversion technologies. Focusing on the challenges of, and technologies related to, biomass conversion, the book is divided into three parts. The first part underlines the fundamental concepts that form the basis of biomass production, its feasibility valuation, and its potential utilization. This part does not consider only how biomass is generated, but also methods of assessment. The second part focuses on the clarification of central concepts of the biorefinery processes. After a preliminary introduction with industrial examples, common issues of biochemical reaction engineering applications are analysed in detail. The theory explained in this part demonstrates that the chemical kinetics are the core focus in modelling biological processes such as growth, decay, product formation and feedstock consumption. This part continues with the theory of biofuels production, including biogas, bioethanol, biodiesel and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons. The third part of this book gives detailed explanations of preliminary notions related to the theory of thermodynamics. This theory will assist the reader when taking into account the concepts treated in the previous two parts of the book. Several detailed derivations are given to give the reader a full understanding of the arguments at hand. This part also gives literature data on the main properties of some biomass feedstock. Fundamentals of Biofuels Engineering and Technology will be of interest not only to academics and researchers working in this field but also to graduate students and energy professionals seeking to expand their knowledge of this increasingly important area.

The Essence of Chromatography (Hardcover, New): Colin F. Poole The Essence of Chromatography (Hardcover, New)
Colin F. Poole
R7,712 Discovery Miles 77 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The knowledge base of chromatography continued to expand throughout the 1990s owing to its many applications to problems of contemporary interest in industry, life and environmental sciences. Organizing this information into a single text for a diverse group of scientists has become increasingly difficult. The present book stemmed from the desire to revise Chromatography Today, written by the same author with Salwa K. Poole, and published in 1991. This title is considered to be one of the definitive texts on chromatography. It was soon realized however, that a simple revision would not provide the desired result of a contemporary picture of the practice of chromatography at the turn of the century. The only workable solution was to start afresh, maintaining the same general philosophy and concept for Chromatography Today where possible, while creating essentially a new book.
The format of the new book is modular, with extensive cross-references to permit rapid location of related material using different separation concepts. Important features are extensive tabulation of essential data for performing separations and an extensive bibliography to the most recent literature.
This title is intended as a suitable text for graduate level courses in the separation sciences and as a self-study guide for professional chromatographers wishing to refresh their background in this rapidly expanding field.
The Essence of Chromatography presents a comprehensive survey of modern chromatography and is an effective replacement for Chromatography Today.
.Comprehensive and authoritative coverage of chromatographic techniques
.Contains extensive coverage of recent literature on this subject
.Ideal text for graduates and suitable for professional chromatographers"

Monolithic Materials, Volume 67 - Preparation, Properties and Applications (Hardcover, New): F. Svec, T B Tennikova, Z. Deyl Monolithic Materials, Volume 67 - Preparation, Properties and Applications (Hardcover, New)
F. Svec, T B Tennikova, Z. Deyl
R9,275 Discovery Miles 92 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the past decade, monolithic materials in the shape of discs, stacked layers, rolled sheets, sponges, irregular chunks, tubes, and cylinders have all been successfully demonstrated. These formats were prepared from a wide variety of materials including natural polymers such as cellulose, synthetic polymers that involved porous styrene-, methacrylate-, and acrylamide-based polymers, and inorganic materials, mainly silica. Each approach is interesting from the point of view of both preparation and application.
Although the current papers and patents concerned with monolithic separation media are quite numerous, the information is scattered throughout a vast number of journals. This book therefore fills the gap in the market for a comprehensive reference book on this subject.
Monolithic materials concerns all of the current formats of monolithic materials and provides an integrated view of this novel format of separation media. Since the flow pattern in monolithic devices is different from that in packed beds, the hydrodynamics of the system and mass transport differ considerably from those derived for packed columns. Therefore, this book presents contributions concerned with both flow and mass transfer in the monolithic materials. A significant proportion of the book is devoted to the applications of monolithic materials. It also provides the reader with valuable information about the sources of the specific materials, their properties, and potential applications.
.Monolithic materials are currently very popular within several scientific areas such as chromatography, optics, catalysis, diagnostics, genomics, proteomics, and microfluidics.
.Provides valuable information about the sources of the specific materials, their properties, and potential applications.
.Chapters written by leading experts in the area."

Preparative Enantioselective Chromatography (Hardcover): Cox Preparative Enantioselective Chromatography (Hardcover)
Cox
R6,352 Discovery Miles 63 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The development of chiral liquid chromatography, facilitating the straightforward separation of enantiomers, was a significant advance in chromatography, leading to widespread application in analytical chemistry. Application in preparative chromatography has been less rapid, but with the development of single enantiomer pharmaceuticals its use is increasingly common in chemical synthesis at laboratory, pilot plant and even full production scale.

Written for chemists, chemical engineers and analytical chemists, Preparative Enantioselective Chromatography demonstrates the considerable utility of the technique in contemporary discovery, development and production scale chemistry. By briefly covering basic preparative chromatography then developing the discussion to cover chiral stationary phases for preparative use, method development and practical applications, the first part of this book serves as an ideal introduction to the technology for laboratory and pilot plant scale application. The more detailed information presented in the later chapters, on applications in discovery, process development and large scale or production environments, including case studies and equipment selection issues, ensures the book will serve as a sound reference for experienced separation scientists.

Countercurrent Chromatography, Volume 38 (Hardcover): A. Berthod Countercurrent Chromatography, Volume 38 (Hardcover)
A. Berthod
R8,625 Discovery Miles 86 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Countercurrent chromatography (CCC) is a separation technique in which the stationary phase is a liquid. The mobile phase is also a liquid, so biphasic liquid systems with at least two solvents are used. Centrifugal fields are used to hold the liquid stationary phase while pushing the liquid mobile phase through it.
This comprehensive reference covers recent advancements in the two types of CCC machines: the high speed CCCs without rotary seals and with coiled spools and centrifugal partition chromatographs (CPC) with rotary seals and interconnected channels.
Written by leading international experts in the CCC field, the book focuses on the liquid nature of the stationary phase: giving newcomers the basis to do CCC efficiently and rapidly; explaining the art of obtaining a biphasic liquid system; describing the flow patterns in both CPC and high speed CCC machines; showing possible other uses of a liquid stationary phase; presenting a wealth of applications in the separation of organic, pharmaceutical and inorganic mixtures; and demonstrating that even supercritical fluids can be used in CCC.

Siegfried Hofmann
R9,181 Discovery Miles 91 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To anyone who is interested in surface chemical analysis of materials on the nanometer scale, this book is prepared to give appropriate information. Based on typical application examples in materials science, a concise approach to all aspects of quantitative analysis of surfaces and thin films with AES and XPS is provided. Starting from basic principles which are step by step developed into practically useful equations, extensive guidance is given to graduate students as well as to experienced researchers. Key chapters are those on quantitative surface analysis and on quantitative depth profiling, including recent developments in topics such as surface excitation parameter and backscattering correction factor. Basic relations are derived for emission and excitation angle dependencies in the analysis of bulk material and of fractional nano-layer structures, and for both smooth and rough surfaces. It is shown how to optimize the analytical strategy, signal-to-noise ratio, certainty and detection limit. Worked examples for quantification of alloys and of layer structures in practical cases (e.g. contamination, evaporation, segregation and oxidation) are used to critically review different approaches to quantification with respect to average matrix correction factors and matrix relative sensitivity factors. State-of-the-art issues in quantitative, destructive and non-destructive depth profiling are discussed with emphasis on sputter depth profiling and on angle resolved XPS and AES. Taking into account preferential sputtering and electron backscattering corrections, an introduction to the mixing-roughness-information depth (MRI) model and its extensions is presented.
