Structures for Nuclear Facilities - Analysis, Design, and Construction (Hardcover, 2011): M.Y.H. Bangash Structures for Nuclear Facilities - Analysis, Design, and Construction (Hardcover, 2011)
M.Y.H. Bangash
R5,309 Discovery Miles 53 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a general introduction to the topic of buildings for resistance to the effects of abnormal loadings. The structural design requirements for nuclear facilities are very unique. In no other structural system are extreme loads such as tornadoes, missile and loud interaction, earthquake effects typical in excess of any recorded historical data at a site, and postulated system accident at very low probability range explicitly, considered in design. It covers the whole spectrum of extreme load which has to be considered in the structural design of nuclear facilities and reactor buildings, the safety criteria, the structural design, the analysis of containment. Test case studies are given in a comprehensive treatment. Each major section contains a full explanation which allows the book to be used by students and practicing engineers, particularly those facing formidable task of having to design complicated building structures with unusual boundary conditions.

The Issues and Discussion of Modern Concrete Science (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015): Wenke Yang The Issues and Discussion of Modern Concrete Science (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015)
Wenke Yang
R2,684 Discovery Miles 26 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is devoted to two primary objectives. The first is to present the errors, inadaptability and mistakes arising when the current theory on concrete is applied to explaining practical construction of concrete; the second is to put forward viewpoints in modern concrete science. Taking a number of engineering cases as examples, we experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed the errors, inadaptability, and mistakes when the current theory on concrete is applied to explaining practical construction of concrete. Moreover, we investigated the use of mixing ratios, aggregates, cement, high-performance concrete and fibers, as well as the frost resistance, cracking behavior, durability, dry shrinkage and autogenous healing to address and remedy the shortcomings in today's concrete science, put forward new proposals and make a number of innovative achievements in the field, particularly in modern theory on concrete science. The results and topics which will be of particular interest to engineers and researchers include: corrections to several one-sided, even mistaken views on concrete construction in the field and a new theory that can be adopted to improve the durability of concrete projects, to control and improve the implementation quality of concrete projects and to guide teaching in universities. Wenke Yang is a distinguished senior engineer at China Airport Construction Group Corporation, General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC).

Building a Passive House - The Architect's Logbook (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Stefano Piraccini, Kristian Fabbri Building a Passive House - The Architect's Logbook (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Stefano Piraccini, Kristian Fabbri
R4,416 Discovery Miles 44 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes step-by-step the entire building process of a passive, energy-efficient house in a Mediterranean climate. It chronicles the creation of the Fiorita Passive House in Cesena, Italy, offering designers valuable tips and practical advice for their own projects. Written as a logbook, it not only provides essential technical information but is also an exciting story of the challenges encountered and the solutions that were found. "How and where do I start when building a passive house? Do I need consultants? Will it cost too much? What precautions should I take in a Mediterranean region? What tools do I need? I want to build in wood, but what technical solutions should I use? What must I do regarding plants and equipment? And then, finally, will it really work?" These and many other questions filled the head of the author and designer when he tried his hand at building a passive house in the Mediterranean. The designer, S. Piraccini, had long sought a book that would answer these answers - in vain. So he decided to brave these dangerous waters alone, and after successfully completing his project, he decided to write a book to help others in the same situation. The book is accompanied by detailed information on building physics and HVAC systems by his fellow architect, K. Fabbri.

Static and Dynamic Buckling of Thin-Walled Plate Structures (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Tomasz Kubiak Static and Dynamic Buckling of Thin-Walled Plate Structures (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Tomasz Kubiak
R3,290 Discovery Miles 32 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph deals with buckling and postbuckling behavior of thin plates and thin-walled structures with flat wall subjected to static and dynamic load. The investigations are carried out in elastic range. The basic assumption here is the thin plate theory. This method is used to determination the buckling load and postbuckling analysis of thin-walled structures subjected to static and dynamic load. The book introduces two methods for static and dynamic buckling investigation which allow for a wider understanding of the phenomenon. Two different methods also can allow uncoupling of the phenomena occurring at the same time and attempt to estimate their impact on the final result. A general mathematical model, adopted in proposed analytical-numerical method, enables the consideration of all types of stability loss i.e.local, global and interactive forms of buckling. The applied numerical-numerical method includes adjacent of walls, shear-lag phenomenon and a deplanation of cross-sections.

M.M. Chrimes, A.W. Skempton, N. A. F. Smith; Edited by Joyce Brown
R47,556 Discovery Miles 475 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Studies in the History of Civil Engineering focuses on the following areas: A* the analysis of early structures to discover how ancient or medieval builders used the materials available to them, and the principles upon which they worked; A* the ideas and practices of design as employed by both engineers and architects; A* the development of new materials and techniques, from wooden trusses to cast iron and concrete; A* the investigation of the great engineering projects that began to burgeon with the 18th century, first in Britain, then elsewhere, underpinned by advances in science which provided a new theoretical framework upon which to base the engineering. These volumes reveal the implications for the history of architecture of choices of material, technique and structure. They aim also to reflect the political and economic constraints which so often shaped what could be achieved, and the inter-relationship between the history of civil engineering and economic history: the engineering was both stimulated by, and made possible the spread of industrialization. Not least, the series is concerned to examine the lives, attitudes and careers of the men who emerged to form the new profession of the engineer. Studies in the History of Civil Engineering comprises 12 volumes. Each focuses on a particular topic, edited by an expert in that field. They reprint a selection of papers which have proved of particular importance, and which exemplify the current state of knowledge and the historiography. Originally published in wide range of scholarly journals, conference proceedings and the like, many hard to consult, these papers are now reprinted together under hard covers, making them readily accessible, even for non-specialists. Each volume opens with a substantial new introduction by the editor, to assess the field and place the papers in their context, and is fully indexed. The series constitutes an authoritative reference library, not just for those interested in the history of civil engineering, but also those studying economic history and the history of science and, above all, of architecture.

Professional Surveyors and Real Property Descriptions - Composition Construction and Comprehension (Hardcover, New): S.V.... Professional Surveyors and Real Property Descriptions - Composition Construction and Comprehension (Hardcover, New)
S.V. Estopinal
R2,810 Discovery Miles 28 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The only modern guide to interpreting and writing real property descriptions for surveyors

Technical land information is no longer the exclusive domain of professional surveyors. The Internet now houses a multitude of resources that nontechnical professionals--such as attorneys and realtors--access and implement on a daily basis. However, these professionals are trained in aspects of law and commerce that do not provide the proper education and experience to interpret and evaluate their land boundary information discoveries correctly. As a result, their analysis is often erroneous and the data misapplied--ultimately leading to confusion and costly litigation.

Professional Surveyors and Real Property Descriptions attempts to bridge the ever-widening gap between the users of land boundary information and the land surveyors who produce it. An expert team of authors integrates the historic and legal background of real property interests with fundamental concepts of the surveying profession in a manner accessible for average readers. These provide the basics for both properly comprehending older descriptions and competently constructing complete and modern real property descriptions that foster better communication. Highlights in this book include:

An in-depth exploration of historic descriptions and how to read them

Coverage of the widely accepted ALTA/ACSM Land Boundary Survey standards and associated property descriptions

A diverse collection of examples and practice scenarios

An overview of the latest issues related to the use of GPS and GIS

Written in easy-to-understand language, this practical resource assists nontechnical professionals in understanding exactly what a surveyor does and does not do, and serves as a valuable tool for obtaining the most satisfactory, accurate, and complete real property descriptions.

Issues, Insights and Lessons Learnt - Proceedings of the Symposium Commemorating 75 Years from November 10, 1940 Vrancea Earthquake (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Radu Vacareanu, Constantin Ionescu
R6,559 Discovery Miles 65 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These proceedings include most of the available information on this major seismic event and its consequences. With an estimated moment magnitude of 7.7 and a heavy toll in terms of human and economic losses, it ranks as the largest intermediate-depth earthquake in Europe in the twentieth century. Nevertheless, because of the difficult conditions in the 1940s, the lessons learnt after the Vrancea earthquake were not extensively shared with the international scientific community and thus, this book fills a gap in the literature discussing the knowledge acquired after major disasters. Past experience together with current understanding of the 1940 Vrancea earthquake are presented along with the latest information on Romanian seismicity, seismic hazard and risk assessment, and seismic evaluation and rehabilitation of buildings and structures. Moreover, it includes excerpts from Romanian post-disaster reports and textbooks concerning the earthquake.

The Influence Line Approach to the Analysis of Rigid Frames (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Edward Buckley The Influence Line Approach to the Analysis of Rigid Frames (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Edward Buckley
R2,748 Discovery Miles 27 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Influence Line Approach to the Analysis of Rigid Frames offers a simple method of analysis of indeterminate structures. It is original and independent of other methods. The author derived these equations by applying an algebraic rather than an arithmetical method of distribution of fixed-end moments. His method is fully explained and illustrated by worked examples.

The equations listed in the Tables in The Influence Line Approach to the Analysis of Rigid Frames offer a simple approach to the analysis of rigid frames, including building frames, rendering them statically determinate for any system of loading, static or moving and including the self weight of a structure.

Particularly useful aspects to the reader are:
-The equations are of an elementary nature consisting only of distribution factors and the co-efficient of a span length and to which values from zero to unity are given.
-The equations can be used to analyze frames the members of which can be either of constant or variable cross-section, and in both cases distributions of fixed-end moments are not required.
-In addition, the evaluation of fixed-end moments is not required when the frame consists of members of constant cross-section.
-The equations are independent of other methods of analysis requiring neither the use of model analysis nor the application of linear equations.
-The equations offer a good indication of structural behavior.
-The Tables lend themselves to expansion catering for different degrees of end fixation. The Influence Line Approach to the Analysis of Rigid Frames can be taught not only to university undergraduate students, but also to those pursuing middle-levelcourses in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering and Building. In addition, practicing assistant structural designers will find it a useful reference work.

Environmental Reconstruction in Headwater Areas (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Martin F. Bach, Josef Krecek Environmental Reconstruction in Headwater Areas (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Martin F. Bach, Josef Krecek
R2,680 Discovery Miles 26 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

These proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Environmental Reconstruction in Headwater Areas" provide a landmark in the evolution of a distinctive movement, perhaps an emerging new philosophy, within the practice of headwater management. The Headwater Control movement traces its history back to the First International Conference on Headwater Control, Prague, 1989. Throughout this brief history, Headwater Control has remained a typical environment movement 'ad hocracy'. At its meetings, for every convert to the multidisciplinary, integrative, practical, interventionist, and above-all 'green' ideals of the group, there have been several delegates who have found the whole concept both new and slightly incomprehensible. One reason for this has been the Headwater Control practice of trying to bring together scientists, practitioners, policy-makers and non-government environmentalist organisations. The group's larger meetings have always been federal gatherings. Sponsorship has been shared with invited participation from associations representing hydrological science, soil conservation, erosion control, forestry, environmental activism and so forth. These delegations may have included fellow travellers in the work to protect headwater environments, but their main concerns have not necessarily coincided with the Headwater Control group's prescriptions for the environmental regeneration of headwater regions. The Liberec Workshop, whose proceedings are distilled into this volume, provided a first opportunity for the scattered supporters of Headwater Control to talk among themselves and fmd out to what degree there really is a shared vision of the way forward in headwater management, restoration and protection.
