This book is for everyone who wonders why fire engines are red, why
a chief has five "bugles" while a captain has two, why fire
hydrants are sometimes called "fire plugs" and why we toll bells
and play bagpipes at firefighter funerals.
The main goal of this book is to present the methods used to
calculate the most important parameters for ropes, and to explain
how they are applied on the basis of numerous sample calculations.
The book, based on the most important chapters of the German book
DRAHTSEILE, has been updated to reflect the latest developments,
with the new edition especially focusing on computational methods
for wire ropes. Many new calculations and examples have also been
added to facilitate the dimensioning and calculation of mechanical
characteristics of wire ropes. This book offers a valuable resource
for all those working with wire ropes, including construction
engineers, operators and supervisors of machines and installations
involving wire ropes.

The book encodes a vision for the actively sustainable management
and development of the built environment by referring to the
application of timber-based construction systems as additive
solutions for the multi-purpose improvement of existing buildings.
It translates this vision into an innovative methodology for the
management of the entire building process - from design to
production, operation, and maintenance - and the assessment of
timber-based construction performances across the whole building
life-cycle. This approach is based on a multi-dimensional analysis,
which starts from the structure of the Active House (AH) protocol,
improved through information-integrated digital environments and
multi-criteria evaluation methods, such as BIM and Design
Optioneering. During the design stage, indeed, it analyzes and
compares different design choices, according to the DO method,
until the definition and validation of the "As-Built" step, while
in the operational phase, it refers to sensors-retrieved data to
show the evolution of the building behaviour, accounting for real
users' interaction, building performances decay and needs of
maintenance, defining the digital twin of the building: a real
Cognitive Building. Finally, the application of this methodology
identifies innovative models of processes, products, and design of
wood-based construction technologies, suitable to satisfy the needs
of the 2D/3D construction layering for the sustainable
transformation of the built environment.
There is widespread interest in the way that smart energy control
systems, such as assessment and monitoring techniques for low
carbon, nearly-zero energy and net positive buildings can
contribute to a Sustainable future, for current and future
generations. There is a turning point on the horizon for the supply
of energy from finite resources such as natural gas and oil become
less reliable in economic terms and extraction become more
challenging, and more unacceptable socially, such as adverse public
reaction to 'fracking'. Thus, in 2016 these challenges are having a
major influence on the design, optimisation, performance
measurements, operation and preservation of: buildings,
neighbourhoods, cities, regions, countries and continents. The
source and nature of energy, the security of supply and the equity
of distribution, the environmental impact of its supply and
utilization, are all crucial matters to be addressed by suppliers,
consumers, governments, industry, academia, and financial
institutions. This book entitled 'Smart Energy Control Systems for
Sustainable Buildings' contains eleven chapters written by
international experts based on enhanced conference papers presented
at the Sustainability and Energy in Buildings International
conference series. This book will be of interest to University
staff and students; and also industry practioners.

This book primarily focuses on methodologies to enable marine
structures to resist high velocity impact loadings. It is based on
invited talks presented at the recent India-USA workshop on "Recent
Advances in Blast Mitigation Strategies in Civil and Marine
Composite Structures" The book comprises content from top
researchers from India and the USA and covers various aspects of
the topic, including modeling and simulation, design aspects,
experimentation and various challenges. These failure modes
significantly reduce the structural integrity of the marine
structures unless they are designed to resist such harsh loadings.
Understanding the mechanics of these structures under harsh
loadings is still an open area of research, and the behavior of
these structures is not fully understood. The book highlights
efforts to reduce the effects of blast loadings on marine composite
structures. Intended for researchers/scientists and practicing
engineers, the book focuses not only the design and analysis
challenges of marine composite structures under such harsh loading
conditions, but also provides new design guidelines.
This book encapsulates the analysis and design of buried gravity
flow conduits, including pipe materials and soil materials and
their interaction. These range from traditional pipes to open
bottom concrete and corrugated metal culverts with spans of up to
25 metres, and include culverts, storm drains, sewers, and buried
bridges. It begins with historical background and easily
understandable design models then considers the properties of pipe
materials and of pipe rings and backfill soils and the
commonalities in their behavior. Finally, design methods consider
the interaction of pipe and soil, along with simplified and
computer methods. Much of this has been adopted by the AASHTO
Committee on Bridges (responsible for highway culvert design) and
other standards. The book will be important to any practicing
engineer working on buried pipe design, including public engineers
at all levels, private consultants, and product manufacturers, and
will also suit researchers as a unified and comprehensive
presentation.

This book discusses bulk solids that derive their mechanical
properties not from those of their base materials, but from their
designed microstructures. Focusing on the negative mechanical
properties, it addresses topics that reveal the counter-intuitive
nature of solids, specifically the negativity of properties that
are commonly positive, such as negative bulk modulus, negative
compressibility, negative hygroexpansion, negative thermal
expansion, negative stiffness phase, and negative Poisson's ratio.
These topics are significant not only due to the curiosity they
have sparked, but also because of the possibility of designing
materials and structures that can behave in ways that are not
normally expected in conventional solids, and as such, of materials
that can outperform solids and structures made from conventional
materials. The book includes illustrations to facilitate learning,
and, where appropriate, reference tables. The presentation is
didactic, starting with simple cases, followed by increasingly
complex ones. It provides a solid foundation for graduate students,
and a valuable resource for practicing materials engineers seeking
to develop novel materials through the judicious design of
microstructures and their corresponding mechanisms.
This book addresses information technologies recently applied in
