Dialogic Pedagogy - Discourse in Contexts from Pre-school to University (Hardcover): Anne Thwaite, Alyson Simpson, Pauline Jones Dialogic Pedagogy - Discourse in Contexts from Pre-school to University (Hardcover)
Anne Thwaite, Alyson Simpson, Pauline Jones
R3,596 Discovery Miles 35 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Taking a dialogic approach, this edited book engages in analysis and description of dialogic discourse in a number of different educational contexts, from early childhood to tertiary, with an international team of contributors from Australia, Finland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The chapters focus mostly on dialogic face-to-face discourse, with some examples of online interactions, and feature insights from educational linguistics, particularly the work of Michael Halliday. While the contributors come from a range of theoretical backgrounds, they all share an interest in language in use, and engage in close analysis of transcripts of naturally-occurring interaction. Taking inspiration from Alexander and other theorists, they employ a fine-grained and analytic approach to the exploration of their data. The authors make use of the linguistic tools and models of language in society, in order to examine the turn-by-turn unfolding of the interaction. The authors relate their insights from disparate forms of linguistic analysis to elements of Alexander's (2020) dialogic framework, situating the discourse in its contexts and discussing the pedagogical implications of the linguistic choices at play. In presenting this work from a range of situations and perspectives the authors strive to demonstrate how dialogic discourse plays out in educational contexts across the world. The book aims to foster further research in this direction and to inspire educators to explore dialogic discourse for themselves. It will be of interest to a wide audience, including literacy researchers, linguists, teachers and teacher educators, as well as graduate students.

Technology, Multimodality and Learning - Analyzing Meaning across Scales (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): German Canale Technology, Multimodality and Learning - Analyzing Meaning across Scales (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
German Canale
R2,499 Discovery Miles 24 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book introduces multimodality and technology as key concepts for understanding learning in the 21st century. The author investigates how a nationwide socio-educational policy in Uruguay becomes recontextualised across time/space scales, impacting interaction and learning in an English as a Foreign Language classroom. The book introduces scalar analysis to better understand the situated and fractal nature of education policy as meaning-making, subsequently defining learning from a multimodal socio-semiotic approach. The analytical integration of different policy scales shows what policy means to various stakeholders, and what learning means for students and teachers. This depends both on how they position themselves and how they engage with the policy educational media. This innovative book will appeal to students and scholars of technology and learning, as well as multimodality.

Lucilius and Satire in Second-Century BC Rome (Hardcover): Brian W Breed, Elizabeth Keitel, Rex Wallace Lucilius and Satire in Second-Century BC Rome (Hardcover)
Brian W Breed, Elizabeth Keitel, Rex Wallace
R2,524 Discovery Miles 25 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume considers linguistic, cultural, and literary trends that fed into the creation of Roman satire in second-century BC Rome. Combining approaches drawn from linguistics, Roman history, and Latin literature, the chapters share a common purpose of attempting to assess how Lucilius' satires functioned in the social environment in which they were created and originally read. Particular areas of focus include audiences for satire, the mixing of varieties of Latin in the satires, and relationships with other second-century genres, including comedy, epic, and oratory. Lucilius' satires emerged at a time when Rome's new status as an imperial power and its absorption of influences from the Greek world were shaping Roman identity. With this in mind the book provides new perspectives on the foundational identification of satire with what it means to be Roman and satire's unique status as 'wholly ours' tota nostra among Latin literary genres.

Populism in Power - Discourse and Performativity in SYRIZA and Donald Trump (Hardcover): Giorgos Venizelos Populism in Power - Discourse and Performativity in SYRIZA and Donald Trump (Hardcover)
Giorgos Venizelos
R3,598 Discovery Miles 35 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shifting attention away from policy achievements and effects on democracy, Giorgos Venizelos focuses on the charismatic function of populist discourse - comprising antagonistic narratives, transgressive style and appeals to the common people. The book puts forward an integrative approach that brings together discourse analysis, analysis of digital media, in-depth interviews and ethnographic methods, and places into comparative perspective the cases of SYRIZA in Greece and Donald Trump in the USA. Theorising populism through the lens of collective identification, Venizelos places the rhetorical and emotional dynamics of populist performativity at the core of the analysis, offering a rigorous yet flexible conceptulisation of populism in power. Against theoretical expectations, findings suggest that both SYRIZA and Trump retained, to different degrees, their populist character in power, although their style and vision differed vastly. This book urges researchers, journalists and politicians to adopt a reflexive approach to analysing the political implications of populism for politics, polity and society, and to challenge the normatively charged definitions that are uncritically reproduced in the public sphere. It will appeal to researchers of political theory, populism, comparative politics, sociologists, and ethnographers.

Perspectives from Systemic Functional Linguistics (Paperback): Akila Sellami-Baklouti, Lise Fontaine Perspectives from Systemic Functional Linguistics (Paperback)
Akila Sellami-Baklouti, Lise Fontaine
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This innovative collection brings together contributions from established and emerging scholars highlighting the "appliability" of Systemic Functional Linguistics and the ways in which theoretical and analytical conclusions drawn from its applications can inform and advance the study of language. The book discusses SFL's theoretical foundations and development in recent years to demonstrate its evolution into a more effective analytical tool. Building on this theoretical framework, the volume showcases the theory's applications in case studies exploring four sub-disciplines of language study: multilingual studies; translation studies; language learning and language teaching; and genre analysis. This all-inclusive volume demonstrates both Systemic Functional Linguistics' efficacy as a means of theoretical analysis, but also its value as a unique approach to the study of language and meaning, making this an indispensable resource for researchers and scholars in applied linguistics, discourse analysis, genre studies, translation studies, and multilingualism.

Interdisciplinary Practices in Academia - Writing, Teaching and Assessment (Hardcover): Louisa Buckingham, Jihua Dong, Feng... Interdisciplinary Practices in Academia - Writing, Teaching and Assessment (Hardcover)
Louisa Buckingham, Jihua Dong, Feng (Kevin) Jiang
R3,593 Discovery Miles 35 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume addresses the implications that academic interdisciplinarity in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has for research and pedagogy with a global reach. The Editors present a coherent, research-supported analysis of the influence of interdisciplinary research and methods on the way academics collaborate on courses, develop their careers, and teach students. The hitherto prevalence of disciplinary silo-like approaches to academic and scientific issues is increasingly ceding ground to an interdisciplinary synergy of different methodological and epistemological traditions. In the context of ongoing trends towards interdisciplinarity in degree programmes and the increasing popularity of such degree programmes with students (e.g., bioinformatics, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, neuropolitics, evolutionary finance, global studies, and security studies), academics and programme administrators need awareness of the skills needed to operate in interdisciplinary contexts. Studies in this edited volume examine interdisciplinary communication practices, and identify how academic writing, teaching, language proficiency assessment and degree programmes are responding to changes in the broader social, institutional and political contexts of academia. As authors in the volume demonstrate, the discursive features, literacy practices and instructional modes, and the student experience of these emerging interdisciplines deserve systematic exploration. This insightful volume sheds light on contexts across the globe and will be used by students studying EAP and ESP pedagogy or practice; academics in the fields of applied linguistics and higher education, as well as higher education faculty and administrators interested in interdisciplinarity in degree programmes.

Narrative and Metaphor in Education - Look Both Ways (Paperback): Michael Hanne, Anna A. Kaal Narrative and Metaphor in Education - Look Both Ways (Paperback)
Michael Hanne, Anna A. Kaal
R1,197 Discovery Miles 11 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Human beings rely equally on narrative (or storytelling) and metaphor (or analogy) for making sense of the world. Narrative and Metaphor in Education integrates the two perspectives of narrative and metaphor in educational theory and practice at every level from pre-school to lifelong civic education. Bringing together outstanding educational researchers, the book interweaves for the first time the rich strand of current research about how narrative may be used productively in education with more fragmentary research on the role of metaphor in education and invites readers to 'look both ways.' The book consists of research by 40 academics from many countries and disciplines, describing and analysing the intricate connections between narrative and metaphor as they manifest themselves in many fields of education, including: concepts of education, teacher identity and reflective practice, teaching across cultures, teaching science and history, using digital and visual media in teaching, fostering reconciliation in a postcolonial context, special needs education, civic and social education and educational policy-making. It is unique in combining study of the narrative perspective and the metaphor perspective, and in exploring such a comprehensive range of topics in education. Narrative and Metaphor in Education will be of great interest to academics and researchers in the fields of education and educational policy, as well as teacher educators, practising and future teachers. It will also appeal to psychologists, sociologists, applied linguists and communications specialists.

Communicating Creativity - The Discursive Facilitation of Creative Activity in Arts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Darryl Hocking Communicating Creativity - The Discursive Facilitation of Creative Activity in Arts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Darryl Hocking
R3,334 Discovery Miles 33 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an extensive and original analysis of the way that written and spoken communication facilitates creative practice in the university art and design studio. Challenging the established view of creativity as a personal attribute which can be objectively measured, the author demonstrates instead that creativity and creative practice are constructed through a complex array of intersecting discourses, each shaped by wider socio-historical contexts, beliefs and values. The author draws upon a range of methods and resources to capture this dynamic complexity from corpus linguistics to ethnography and multimodal analysis. This innovative volume will appeal to students and scholars of discourse analysis, creativity, and applied linguistics. It will also appeal to art and design educators.

Regulating Social Life - Discourses on the Youth and the Dispositif of Age (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Helena Ostrowicka Regulating Social Life - Discourses on the Youth and the Dispositif of Age (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Helena Ostrowicka
R2,309 Discovery Miles 23 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents the original concept of the 'dispositif of age', combining post-Foucauldian analytics of the dispositif, discourse and governmentality with the historical semantics of Reinhart Koselleck to explore the functions of the notion of youth in the regulation of social life. Making use of examples from sources including scientific and media statements, youth policy programmes, and strategies at international (European) and local (Polish) levels, the author shows how this concept of youth supports processes of social regulation and contributes to the implementation of political goals as specific responses to issues such as radicalization and violence, unemployment, and economic crisis. This book will be of interest not only to scholars of discourse and youth studies, but also to all post-Foucauldian researchers with an interest in going beyond simple 'applicationism'.

Social Media Critical Discourse Studies (Hardcover): Majid KhosraviNik Social Media Critical Discourse Studies (Hardcover)
Majid KhosraviNik
R3,582 Discovery Miles 35 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) aims to enhance our understanding of how discourse figures in social processes, social structures, and social change. This book is in response to specific changes in mediation technologies of discourse, brought about by the significant concentration of discursive practices within the paradigm of social media communication. This book addresses this participatory media context against a broadly defined tradition in CDS, its aspirations, assumptions, and critique. It views discourse as forms of structured representations across a range of modalities of communication including the emerging meaning-making artefacts and practices across social media. It aspires to provide an overview of the key considerations in doing CDS on social media spaces. The book firstly provides a set of aspiration signposting the parameters of doing social media CDS followed by critical explorations of a number of contemporary case studies of digital discourses around identity, politics and representation. It includes various social media communication including YouTube, Instagram, Wikipedia, and Twitter. The book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of linguistics, politics, sociology, communication studies, media and cultural studies, and science and technology studies. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal Critical Discourse Studies.

A Conversation Analytic Approach to Doctoral Supervision - Feedback, Advice, and Guidance (Hardcover): Binh Thanh Ta A Conversation Analytic Approach to Doctoral Supervision - Feedback, Advice, and Guidance (Hardcover)
Binh Thanh Ta
R3,588 Discovery Miles 35 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book reports on an empirical study of oral feedback practices in doctoral supervision meetings, observing supervisors' and students' conduct to enable a new understanding of the social organisation of doctoral research supervision. In a field that has predominantly drawn on surveys and interviews, this study presents a rare, direct insight into doctoral supervision meetings, showing us what actually happens and making a significant contribution to future practice. Based on 25 video-recorded supervision meetings at an Australian university, the book invites the reader into the micro-world of interactions between doctoral students and their supervisors. Drawing on conversation analysis as an analytical framework, the study uncovers how feedback is initiated and delivered, how supervisors manage when students disagree with their advice and guidance, how they acknowledge student autonomy and identity as people with knowledge and expertise in their own right, as well as how supervisors co-work within a team supervision environment. Offering an important new perspective to the study and practice of doctoral supervision, this book will be of interest to doctoral supervisors, postgraduate students and researchers working with conversation analysis and education, and those with an interest in feedback and advice as an integral part of their professions.

The Discourse of Security - Language, Illiberalism and Governmentality (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Malcolm N. MacDonald, Duncan... The Discourse of Security - Language, Illiberalism and Governmentality (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Malcolm N. MacDonald, Duncan Hunter
R3,055 Discovery Miles 30 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how language constructs the meaning and praxis of security in the 21st century. Combining the latest critical theories in poststructuralist and political philosophy with discourse analysis techniques, it uses corpus tools to investigate four collections of documents harvested from national and international security organisations. This interdisciplinary approach provides insights into the ways in which discourse has been mobilised to construct a strategic response to major terrorist attacks and geo-political events. The authors identify the way in which it is used to realize tactics of governmentality and form security as a discipline. This at once constructs a state of exception while also adhering to the principles of liberalism. This insightful study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of subjects such as applied linguistics, political science, security studies and international relations, with additional relevance to other areas including law, criminology, sociology and economics.

Exploring Student Loneliness in Higher Education - A Discursive Psychology Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Lee Oakley Exploring Student Loneliness in Higher Education - A Discursive Psychology Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Lee Oakley
R2,498 Discovery Miles 24 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an in-depth qualitative linguistic study of loneliness disclosures in interviews with undergraduate students in the UK. While much loneliness research has been undertaken in the areas of psychology, social policy and education, such studies have prioritised the social factors behind mental distress without paying explicit attention to the medium in which such distress is communicated and embodied (i.e. language). This monograph supplements this growing body of work by arguing for a stronger focus on the insights which linguistic analysis can provide for investigating how and why loneliness is disclosed by Higher Education students. This book is the first study to address discourses of loneliness in Higher Education specifically from a linguistic perspective, and will be of interest to education and healthcare professionals, counselling and welfare providers, and students and scholars of discourse analysis and linguistics.

Representing Schizophrenia in the Media - A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage (Hardcover): James Balfour Representing Schizophrenia in the Media - A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage (Hardcover)
James Balfour
R3,596 Discovery Miles 35 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a critical analysis of ways in which schizophrenia and people with schizophrenia are represented in the press. Interrogating a 15 million-word corpus of news articles published by nine UK national newspapers over a 15-year period, the author draws on techniques from corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to identify the most frequent and salient linguistic features used by journalists to influence and reflect broader public attitudes towards people with schizophrenia. In doing so this book: Evaluates the extent to which media representations are accurate and the extent to which they are potentially helpful or harmful towards people living with schizophrenia; Employs a bottom-up approach guided by linguistic patterns, such as collocates and keywords, identified by corpus software; Contributes to the de-stigmatization of schizophrenic disorder by unveiling some of the widespread misconceptions surrounding it; Applies a mixed-methods approach in order to expose attitudes and beliefs found 'between the lines' - values and assumptions which are often implicit in the way language is used and therefore not visible to the naked eye. The findings of this monograph will be relevant to advanced students and researchers of health communication, corpus linguistics and applied linguistics and will also carry importance for journalists and mental health practitioners.

Discourse-Pragmatic Variation and Change in English - New Methods and Insights (Hardcover): Heike Pichler Discourse-Pragmatic Variation and Change in English - New Methods and Insights (Hardcover)

Reported Speech in Chinese and English Newspapers - Textual and Pragmatic Functions (Paperback): Wang Jingping Reported Speech in Chinese and English Newspapers - Textual and Pragmatic Functions (Paperback)
Wang Jingping; XIN Bin; Contributions by Huachu Liu; Translated by Shen Lei; Gao Xiaoli
R1,162 Discovery Miles 11 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reported speech is a universal form across human languages. However, previous studies have tended to be limited because they mostly emphasize on the form and authenticity of reported speech, while its discourse and pragmatic functions have largely been ignored. Meanwhile, the studies mainly focus on English, with a comparative perspective with other languages largely missing. Acknowledging these limitations, this book analyzes the textual and pragmatic functions of reported speech in Chinese and English. The authors build a corpus comprising of twelve Chinese and English newspapers, including China Daily and The New York Times. They examine the classification and distribution of reported speech, the form and function in different news genres and contexts, and the socio-pragmatic interpretation of reported speech in news and other issues. This title can enrich comparative linguistic research, verify the feasibility of combining critical linguistics and corpus technology, and help improve the production and understanding of news reports. Students and scholars of critical discourse analysis, comparative linguistics, corpus linguistics, as well as communication studies will find this to be an essential guide.

Discourses of Perfection - Representing Cosmetic Procedures and Beauty Products in UK Lifestyle Magazines (Paperback):... Discourses of Perfection - Representing Cosmetic Procedures and Beauty Products in UK Lifestyle Magazines (Paperback)
Anne-Mette Hermans
R1,152 Discovery Miles 11 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores editorial and advertising discourses related to cosmetic procedures and beauty products and services in UK lifestyle magazines, offering a holistic perspective on the normalisation of cosmetic procedures and the societal context in which particular perceptions have flourished. The volume examines the societal climate that contributed to cultural perceptions of the body as object and project, and constructions of masculinities and femininities as context for developments in lifestyle magazines' content on beauty and cosmetic procedures. Integrating approaches from Critical Discourse Analysis, Thematic Analysis, and Content Analysis, Hermans explores the varying ways in which cosmetic procedures and other beauty products are marketed to different audiences and examines phenomena such as the problem/solution rhetoric, and developments in beauty advertising discourse specifically targeted at men. The book also investigates the continuum view of beauty products and cosmetic procedures, and examines the implications of these blurred boundaries for the regulation of the cosmetic surgery industry. This innovative contribution to research on the representation of cosmetic procedures and beauty products in the media will be of interest to scholars researching at the intersection of language, gender, individualised body projects, and sexuality.

Analysing Discourses in Teacher Observation Feedback Conferences (Paperback): Fiona Copland, Helen Donaghue Analysing Discourses in Teacher Observation Feedback Conferences (Paperback)
Fiona Copland, Helen Donaghue
R1,157 Discovery Miles 11 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume focuses on the post-observation feedback conference, a common feature of teacher education programs, and highlights the importance of such talk in the development and evaluation of teachers and other professionals. The book adopts a linguistic ethnographic approach, which provides a framework for examining the contextual nature of the talk and how it is embedded within wider social contexts and structures, such as evaluation regimes. Drawing on data from a range of settings, including pre-service teacher education, medical education, and teacher appraisal programs, Copland and Donaghue examine the feedback conference from a range of perspectives, including face, identity and genre, and show how a nuanced understanding of discussions can support teacher trainers, supervisors and observers to provide appropriate and useful feedback. A concluding chapter brings together brief vignettes from researchers active in the field to point to future directions for further study. This book will be of particular interest to students and researchers in discourse analysis, language education, linguistic anthropology, and professional communication, as well as pre- and in-service teachers.

Populist Discourse - International Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Marcia Macaulay Populist Discourse - International Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Marcia Macaulay
R3,028 Discovery Miles 30 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited collection draws on case studies from around the world to shed light on the sometimes contentious topic of populism. Examining diverse contexts including North America, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand, and Russia, the authors employ different approaches to populist discourse to analyse key notions in populism such as 'the people' and 'the heartland' as well as the exploitation of medium and narrative. Each of the chapters in this book explores an aspect of the way in which populism constructs a political reality, with reference to such high-profile examples as Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, the Scottish National Party, Hugo Chavez, Vladimir Putin, Barack Obama, and Winston Peters. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of both discourse analysis and political science.

Legitimation in the European Union - A Discourse- and Field-Theoretical View (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Amelie Kutter Legitimation in the European Union - A Discourse- and Field-Theoretical View (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Amelie Kutter
R2,867 Discovery Miles 28 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a transdisciplinary perspective on the question of how political legitimacy is constructed in the increasingly contested postnational setting of the European Union. Drawing on the example of the controversy about the EU constitution and the use of 'EU constitution speak' in commentaries published by Polish and French broadsheets, it reveals the transformation that constructions of political authority and association undergo when they are being transposed from the discourse field of multilateral negotiation to that of national news media. Through an original combination of the linguistic theory of discourse developed in Critical Discourse Analysis, Bourdieu's field theory and notion of symbolic power, and political thought on polity-building, it develops a framework for the discourse study of legitimation and Europeanisation, and proposes applications beyond the case studies in the book.To students of European integration, it demonstrates the potential these concepts have for unravelling the implicit practices of postnational polity building. Discourse researchers, on the other hand, will discover how detailed text analyses gain significance in debates related to the macro level of political organisation when guided by sociological and political theory.

Okinawa Under Occupation - McDonaldization and Resistance to Neoliberal Propaganda (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Miyume Tanji,... Okinawa Under Occupation - McDonaldization and Resistance to Neoliberal Propaganda (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Miyume Tanji, Daniel Broudy
R3,284 Discovery Miles 32 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines classical and modern interpretations of education in the context of contemporary Okinawa as a site of neoliberal military-industrial development. Considering how media educate consumers to accept the plans and policies of the powerful, it questions current concepts of development and the ideology that informs national security policies. The book closely examines the signs, symbols, and rhetorical manipulations of language used in media to rationalize and justify a kind of development, which is the destruction of the environment in Henoko. Through careful analysis of public relations literature and public discourse, it challenges the presupposition that Okinawa is the Keystone of the Pacific and necessarily the only location in Japan to host U.S. military presence. Forced to co-operate in America's military hegemony and global war-fighting action, Okinawa is at the very center of the growing tension between Beijing and Washington and its clients in Tokyo and Seoul. The book represents a case study of the discourse used in society to wield control over this larger project, which is a more developed and militarized Okinawa . Considering how history is given shape through external power structures and discourse practices that seek control over both historical and contemporary narratives, it reveals how public attitudes and perceptions are shaped through educational policies and media.

The Role of Language in the Climate Change Debate (Paperback): Kjersti Flottum The Role of Language in the Climate Change Debate (Paperback)
Kjersti Flottum
R1,327 Discovery Miles 13 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume takes a distinctive look at the climate change debate, already widely studied across a number of disciplines, by exploring the myriad linguistic and discursive perspectives and approaches at play in the climate change debate as represented in a variety of genres.
