A Practical Guide to Social Interaction Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Michelle... A Practical Guide to Social Interaction Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Michelle O'Reilly, Jessica Nina Lester, Tom Muskett
R3,901 Discovery Miles 39 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book introduces a novel approach for examining language and communication in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - discourse and conversation analysis. The authors offer a set of very different perspectives on these complex issues than are typically presented in psychological and clinical work. Emerging from a range of social scientific fields, discourse and conversation analysis involve fine-grained qualitative analysis of naturally-occurring, rather than laboratory-based, interaction, enabling broad applications. Presented in two parts, this innovative volume first provides a set of pedagogical chapters to develop the reader's knowledge and skills in using these approaches, before moving to showcase the use of discursive methods through a range of original contributions from world-leading scholars, drawn from a range of disciplines including sociology, academic and clinical psychology, speech and language therapy, critical disability studies and social theory, and medicine and psychiatry.

The Discourse of Online Consumer Reviews (Hardcover): Camilla Vasquez The Discourse of Online Consumer Reviews (Hardcover)
Camilla Vasquez
R4,579 Discovery Miles 45 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Discourse of Online Reviews is the first book to provide an account of the discursive, pragmatic and rhetorical features of this rapidly growing form of technologically-mediated communication. Examining a corpus of over 1,000 consumer reviews, Camilla Vasquez explores many of the discourse features that are characteristic of this new, user-generated, computer-mediated and primarily text-based genre. She investigates the language used by reviewers as they forge connections with their audiences to draw them into their stories, as they construct their expertise and authority on various subjects and as they evaluate and assess their consumer experiences. She also demonstrates how reviewers display their awareness about emerging conventions of the very genre in which they are participating. This book adopts an eclectic approach to the analysis of discourse, and explores topics such as evaluation, identity and intertextuality as they occur in online reviews of hotels, restaurants, recipes, films and other consumer products.

Salience and Defaults in Utterance Processing (Hardcover): Kasia M. Jaszczolt, Keith Allan Salience and Defaults in Utterance Processing (Hardcover)
Kasia M. Jaszczolt, Keith Allan
R4,973 Discovery Miles 49 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book addresses controversies around the conscious vs automatic processing of contextual information and the distinction between literal and nonliteral meaning. It sheds new light on the relation of the literal/nonliteral distinction to the distinction between the automatic and conscious retrieval of information. The question of literal meaning is inherently interwoven with the question of lexical salience on one hand and default interpretations on the other. This volume addresses these interconnected issues, stressing their mutual interdependence. It contributes new, ground-breaking insights into the questions of literalness, semantics-pragmatics interface, automatic (default) retrieval and contextual pragmatic enrichment, modelling of discourse processing, lexical pragmatics, and other related issues.

The Discourse of Peer Review - Reviewing Submissions to Academic Journals (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Brian Paltridge The Discourse of Peer Review - Reviewing Submissions to Academic Journals (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Brian Paltridge
R3,120 Discovery Miles 31 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines reports that are written by reviewers of submissions to a peer-reviewed journal. This includes a thorough study of the reports from the perspectives of context, content and genre, as well as from the point of view of pragmatics and politeness. The author examines the use of evaluative language, and the roles reviewers assume as they make their evaluations. He also explores how reviewers learn to write these reports. He then discusses the results of these analyses from the point of view of reviewer training, making suggestions for further research in the area of editorial peer review. The demystification of this occluded genre will be of benefit to doctoral students and early career academics not yet familiar with the peer review process, as well as those working in the broader areas of English for Specific Purposes and English for Academic Purposes, discourse analysis and writing for publication.

Constructions of Migrant Integration in British Public Discourse - Becoming British (Hardcover): Sam Bennett Constructions of Migrant Integration in British Public Discourse - Becoming British (Hardcover)
Sam Bennett
R4,581 Discovery Miles 45 810 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a study into how the public discourse on migrant integration in the UK changed from 2000-2010. The book shows that the discursive construction of integration in the British public sphere shifted from one of cultural pluralism to one of neo-assimilation, informed by a wider spread of neo-liberalism that necessitates self-sufficiency and discourages state assistance. Situated within the Critical Discourse Studies tradition, the book employs a Discourse Historical approach to the data and includes innovative analysis combining 'top-down' (policy documents and media texts) and 'bottom-up' (focus groups with migrants and new citizens) sites of discourse production. In doing so, it provides a broad and detailed perspective of public discourse on integration in the UK. The book shows that understandings of 'integration' are diachronically and synchronically fluid and as such, the term plays an important role as a 'consensus concept' that different actors can support whilst construing it in different ways. Analysis of the data further reveals that integration is interdiscursively linked to other social fields, such as the economy, terrorism and public spending. The book also argues that integration policy has become directed not just at new migrants, but also long-term British citizens and that this has the potential to have considerable impact on community cohesion.

Post-Foundational Discourse Analysis - From Political Difference to Empirical Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Tomas Marttila Post-Foundational Discourse Analysis - From Political Difference to Empirical Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Tomas Marttila

This book adds the missing link between post-foundational discourse theory and the methods of empirical research, and in doing so it develops a post-foundational discourse analysis research program. The book offers a structure of the research program, and explores the methodologization of other discourse analytical approaches.

Discourses of Trust (Hardcover): C. Candlin, Jonathan Crichton Discourses of Trust (Hardcover)
C. Candlin, Jonathan Crichton
R2,897 Discovery Miles 28 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Trust is foundational to people's lives in contemporary societies, a fact sharply highlighted by recent practices associated with the financial markets, international security, science and technology, marketing and public relations, and even more pervasively and ever-presently in the delivery, for example, of health and welfare services, in educational policy and practice, in legal processes, and in the public and private arenas of political and religious institutions. Discourses of Trust presents invited chapters from leading practitioners and researchers exploring how Trust and misTrust are discursively constructed across key social and professional domains. The thesis of this volume is that Trust-related and Trust-bearing issues are central to our understanding of how the conduct of professional practices impacts on human relationships in social life.

Discursive Approaches to Language Policy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Elisabeth Barakos, Johann W. Unger Discursive Approaches to Language Policy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Elisabeth Barakos, Johann W. Unger
R3,908 Discovery Miles 39 080 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book brings together the fields of language policy and discourse studies from a multidisciplinary theoretical, methodological and empirical perspective. The chapters in this volume are written by international scholars active in the field of language policy and planning and discourse studies. The diverse research contexts range from education in Paraguay and Luxembourg via businesses in Wales to regional English language policies in Tajikistan. Readers are thereby invited to think critically about the mutual relationship between language policy and discourse in a range of social, political, economic and cultural spheres. Using approaches that draw on discourse-analytic, anthropological, ethnographic and critical sociolinguistic frameworks, the contributors in this collection explore and refine the 'discursive' and the 'critical' aspects of language policy as a multilayered, fluid, ideological, discursive and social process that can operate as a tool of social change as well as reinforcing established power structures and inequalities.

R2,641 Discovery Miles 26 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the intersection of culture and language in Ireland and Irish contexts. The editors take an interdisciplinary approach, exploring the ways in which culture, identity and meaning-making are constructed and performed through a variety of voices and discourses. This edited collection analyses the work of well-known Irish authors such as Beckett, Joyce and G. B. Shaw, combining new methodologies with more traditional approaches to the study of literary discourse and style. Over the course of the volume, the contributors also discuss how Irish voices are received in translation, and how marginal voices are portrayed in the Irish mediascape. This dynamic book brings together a multitude of contrasting perspectives, and is sure to appeal to students and scholars of Irish literature, migration studies, discourse analysis, traductology and dialectology.

The Discourse of Physics - Building Knowledge through Language, Mathematics and Image (Hardcover): Y. J. Doran The Discourse of Physics - Building Knowledge through Language, Mathematics and Image (Hardcover)
Y. J. Doran
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides a detailed model of both the discourse and knowledge of physics and offers insights toward developing pedagogy that improves how physics is taught and learned. Building on a rich history of applying a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach to scientific discourse, the book uses an SFL framework, here extended to encompass the more recently developed Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis approach, to explore the field's multimodal nature and offer detailed descriptions of three of its key semiotic resources - language, image, and mathematics. To complement the book's SFL underpinnings, Doran draws on the sociological framework of Legitimation Code Theory, which offers tools for understanding the principles of how knowledge is developed and valued, to explore the manifestation of knowledge in physics specifically and its relationship with discourse. Through its detailed descriptions of the key semiotic resources and its analysis of the knowledge structure of physics, this book is an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers in multimodality, discourse analysis, educational linguistics, and science education.

The Discourse of Special Populations - Critical Intercultural Communication Pedagogy and Practice (Hardcover): Ahmet Atay,... The Discourse of Special Populations - Critical Intercultural Communication Pedagogy and Practice (Hardcover)
Ahmet Atay, Diana Trebing
R4,478 Discovery Miles 44 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The term "special population" occupies a particular purpose and has a particular role in the discourse of higher education. This book uses the term as an umbrella term for any student who tends to be underrepresented on college campuses and has a very specific set of unique needs: among others, individuals with physical and learning disabilities, international students, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ students, single parents, and first generation and other non-traditional student groups. Sometimes these "special" student groups are visible to educators; however, quite often they are hidden in plain sight, which makes it difficult for educators to work effectively and meaningfully with these student groups. This book uses the framework of critical intercultural communication pedagogy to generate a discussion about pedagogical issues surrounding students who are categorized as "special populations", focusing on culturally sensitive pedagogical methods to educate all students.

Women Leaders and Gender Stereotyping in the UK Press - A Poststructuralist Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Judith Baxter Women Leaders and Gender Stereotyping in the UK Press - A Poststructuralist Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Judith Baxter
R2,059 Discovery Miles 20 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores how the UK press constructs and represents women leaders drawn from three professional spheres: politics, business, and the mass media. Despite significant career progress made by women leaders in these professions, many British newspapers continue to portray these women in stereotyped and essentialist ways: the extent to which this occurs tending to correspond with the political affiliation and target readership of the newspaper. The author analyses news media articles through three fresh perspectives: first, Kanter's women leader stereotypes, second, a feminist agenda spectrum and third, a new 'reflexive' approach based on Feminist Poststructuralist Discourse Analysis. This book will appeal strongly to students and scholars of discourse analysis and media studies, and anyone with an interest in language, gender, leadership and feminism.

The Discourse of ADHD - Perspectives on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Mary Horton-Salway,... The Discourse of ADHD - Perspectives on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Mary Horton-Salway, Alison Davies
R3,897 Discovery Miles 38 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the discourse of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), one of the most debated mental health categories attributed to children and adults across the globe. The authors trace the origins, development and representation of ADHD to demonstrate how the category is produced through competing explanatory theories and processes of scientific, professional and lay discourse. Starting with the idea that medical categories are as much a product of cultural meaning, social processes and models of medicine as they are of scientific fact, this book utilises a range of perspectives from within critical discursive psychology to approach this topic. The authors discuss historical construction, media representation, parents' accounts of family life, and the personal experience of children and adults to demonstrate how the construction of social identity and cultural stereotypes are embedded in the meaning of ADHD. They explore the origins of ADHD and how biological and psychosocial explanations of the mental health category have been produced, circulated, debated and resisted within a culture of 'Othering', and the discourse of blame.

Queering Masculinities in Language and Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Paul Baker, Giuseppe Balirano Queering Masculinities in Language and Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Paul Baker, Giuseppe Balirano
R4,243 Discovery Miles 42 430 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How do we learn what it means to be a man? And how do we learn to question what it means to be a man? This collection comprises a set of original interdisciplinary chapters on the linguistic and cultural representations of queer masculinities in a range of new and older media: television, film, online forums, news reporting, advertising and fiction. This innovative work examines new and emerging forms of gender hybridisation in relation to complex socialisation and immigration contexts including the role of EU institutions in ascertaining asylum seekers' sexual orientation, and the European laws on gender policy. The book employs numerous analytical approaches including critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, multimodal analysis, literary criticism and anthropological and social research. The authors show how such texts can disrupt, question or complicate traditional notions of what it means to be a man, queering the idea that men possess fixed identities or desires, instead arguing that masculinity is constantly changing and negotiated through the cultural and political overlapping contexts in which it is regularly produced. These nuanced analyses will bring fresh insights for students and scholars of gender, masculinity and queer studies, linguistics, anthropology and semiotics.

Routledge Library Editions: Discourse Analysis (Hardcover): Various Routledge Library Editions: Discourse Analysis (Hardcover)
Various
R19,631 Discovery Miles 196 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Discourse analysis is a wide ranging area of study that examines the features of language beyond the limits of a sentence - including vocal, written and sign language, along with any significant semiotic events. It has been employed from a number of interdisciplinary perspectives in an attempt to reveal a person's socio-psychological characteristics through the practical analysis of naturally-occurring language rather than artificially created examples. Routledge Library Editions: Discourse Analysis brings together an extensive collection of scholarship that reflects the broad scope of the subject area, examining the relationship of discourse to a number of closely related fields including stylistics, pragmatics, speech, conversation, context, anaphora, grammar and psychology. This set, published between 1979 and 1993, provides a thorough grounding in this key discipline for students of linguistics and psychology, and social sciences in general.

The Language of Fear - Communicating Threat in Public Discourse (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Piotr Cap The Language of Fear - Communicating Threat in Public Discourse (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Piotr Cap
R1,767 Discovery Miles 17 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates linguistic strategies of threat construction and fear generation in contemporary public communication, including state political discourse as well as non-governmental, media and institutional discourses. It describes the ways in which the construction of closeness and remoteness can be manipulated in the public sphere and bound up with fear, security and conflict. Featuring a series of case studies in different domains, from presidential speeches to environmental discourse, it demonstrates how political and organizational leaders enforce the imminence of an outside threat to claim legitimization of preventive policies. It reveals that the best legitimization effects are obtained by discursively constructed fear appeals, which ensure quick social mobilization. The scope of the book is of immediate concern in the modern globalized era where borders and distance dissolve and are re-imagined. It will appeal to students and researchers in linguistics, discourse analysis, media communication as well as social and political sciences.

Consecutive Interpreting - An Interdisciplinary Study (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Alexander V. Kozin Consecutive Interpreting - An Interdisciplinary Study (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Alexander V. Kozin
R3,565 Discovery Miles 35 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book sheds light on the phenomenon of consecutive interpreting. It combines phenomenological and empirical analyses to build a communication theory of interpreting. The author begins by reviewing mainstream research on consecutive interpreting and then dissociates himself from it, conducting a three-tier analysis of interpreting data. He concludes by presenting an alternative theory of consecutive interpreting. As he makes clear from the outset, a new and combined methodology for consecutive interpreting needs to be constructed to satisfy both the relation of the phenomenon to experience as well as its social foundation. He also stresses the potential within the humanities for wider employment of the phenomenological empirical method. This book will appeal to students and scholars of linguistics, translation, phenomenology, social interaction and communication

How to Read Economic News - A Critical Approach to Economic Journalism (Paperback): Henry Silke, Fergal Quinn, Maria Rieder How to Read Economic News - A Critical Approach to Economic Journalism (Paperback)
Henry Silke, Fergal Quinn, Maria Rieder
R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Closely examining how the news media reports economic and financial matters, this book equips students with solid methodological skills for reading and interpreting the news alongside a toolkit for best practice as an economic journalist. How to Read Economic News combines theory and practice to explore the discourse surrounding economics in the mass media and how this specialised form of reporting can be improved. Beginning by introducing major concepts such as financialised economic reporting, media amnesia and loss of trust, the book goes on to help students to interpret, understand and analyse existing news discourse and to identify subtle biases in news reports stemming from hegemonic belief systems. The final section puts this analytical knowledge into practice, providing students with methods for the critical production of news and covering such skills as identifying newsworthiness, story sourcing, achieving clarity, and using complex datasets in news stories. This is a key text for students and academics in the fields of financial journalism and critical discourse analysis who wish to approach the subject with a critical eye.
