Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a longstanding problem that has increasingly come to the forefront of international and national policy debates and news: from the US reauthorization of the Violence against Women Act and a United Nations declaration to end sexual violence in war, to coverage of gang rapes in India, cyberstalking and "revenge porn", honor killings, female genital mutilation, and international trafficking. Yet, while we frequently read or learn about particular experiences or incidents of VAWG, we are often unaware of the full picture. Jacqui True, an internationally renowned scholar of globalization and gender, provides an expansive frame for understanding VAWG in this book. Among the questions she addresses include: What are we talking about when we discuss VAWG? What kinds of violence does it encompass? Who does it affect most and why? Engel contends that the present moment in gay and lesbian rights in America is indeed one of considerable advancement and change-but that there is still much to be done in shaping American institutions to recognize gays and lesbians as full citizens. With impressive scope and fascinating examples, Engel traces the relationship between gay and lesbian individuals and the government from the late nineteenth century through the present. Engel shows that gays and lesbians are more accurately described as fragmented citizens. Despite the marriage ruling, Engel argues that LGBT Americans still do not have full legal protections against workplace, housing, family, and other kinds of discrimination. There remains a continuing struggle of the state to control the sexuality of gay and lesbian citizens-they continue to be fragmented citizens. Engel argues that understanding the development of the idea of gay and lesbian individuals as 'less-than-whole' citizens can help us make sense of the government's continued resistance to full equality despite massive changes in public opinion. Furthermore, he argues that it was the state's ability to identify and control gay and lesbian citizens that allowed it to develop strong administrative capacities to manage all of its citizens in matters of immigration, labor relations, and even national security. The struggle for gay and lesbian rights, then, affected not only the lives of those seeking equality but also the very nature of American governance itself. Fragmented Citizens is a sweeping historical and political account of how our present-day policy debates around citizenship and equality came to be.

Equal opportunity is a powerful idea, and one with extremely broad appeal in contemporary politics, political theory, and law. But what does it mean? On close examination, the most attractive existing conceptions of equal opportunity turn out to be impossible to achieve in practice, or even in theory. As long as families are free to raise their children differently, no two people's opportunities will be equal; nor is it possible to disentangle someone's abilities or talents from her background advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, given different abilities and disabilities, different people need different opportunities, confounding most ways of imagining what counts as "equal." This book proposes an entirely new way of thinking about the project of equal opportunity. Instead of focusing on the chimera of literal equalization, we ought to work to broaden the range of opportunities open to people at every stage in life. We can achieve this in part by loosening the bottlenecks that constrain access to opportunities-the narrow places through which people must pass in order to pursue many life paths that open out on the other side. A bottleneck might be a test like the SAT, a credential requirement like a college degree, or a skill like speaking English. It might be membership in a favored caste or racial group. Bottlenecks are part of the opportunity structure of every society. But their severity varies. By loosening them, we can build a more open and pluralistic opportunity structure in which people have more of a chance, throughout their lives, to pursue paths they choose for themselves-rather than those dictated by limited opportunities. This book develops this idea and other elements of opportunity pluralism, then applies this approach to several contemporary egalitarian policy problems: class and access to education, workplace flexibility and work/family conflict, and antidiscrimination law.

"On the East-West" Slope explores changing cognitive geographies with regard to Eastern Europe during the late 20th century and the turn of the Millenium. While the fundamental poles of East and West remain, both their meaning and their relationship to one another have shifted profoundly since the late 1970s. The book demonstrates the ways in which supposedly liberal characterizations of East and West project a theoretical slope across the map of Europe, oriented as increasingly negative from West to East. Paradoxically, a liberal discourse of Europeanization "turns ugly" in the context of East European politics as it generates polarizing issues, including extreme nationalism and discriminatory racism, as in the case of the Roma. Finally, the book argues that such paradoxes are not paradoxes at all if we recognize that civilizational slope ideas have a major function in maintaining and reproducing hierarchical world economies. The book is also one of the first attempts to create links between the postcolonial analysis of development in the Third World and changes in Eastern Europe The book seeks to analyze discourses underpinning mental maps of "East" and "West" focusing on individual and institutional actors. In order to understand the East/West positioning and identities of the different actors, the book performs a comprehensive analysis of discourses on population development, of mental maps presented by global corporations and foundations and also a unique hermeneutical analysis of narrative interviews conducted with people crossing East/West borders in the United States, Hungary and Russia. The book will attract a wide international readership. As the book analyzes "empirical" material and reviews a wide range of literature on sociology of knowledge, demography, political science, East European Studies, and postcolonialism, it will prove an essential resource for undergraduate and graduate students and their professors at Western and East European Universities. Although Canada is known internationally as a leader among industrialized countries for inclusive practices towards immigrants and refugees, the twenty-first century has witnessed a rise in the number of refugees and temporary migrant workers who are often denied citizenship and may also experience detention and deportation. Containing Diversity examines to what extent Canada's long-standing support for immigration, multiculturalism, and citizenship has shifted in favour of discourses, policies, and practices that "contain" diversity. This book reflects on how diversity is being "contained" through practices designed to insulate the Canadian settler-colonial state. Five case-studies of mid-sized Northeastern communities-Dayton, Hartford, Rochester, Trenton, and Wilmington-are used to examine and analyze school desegregation experiences. Qualities likely to encourage the peaceful achievement of racial balance are described. The study concludes that parents are most concerned about safety, educational quality, and their ability to exert influence over their children's schooling. This study describes and analyzes how five communities in the northeastern United States have addressed the subject of desegregation. Dayton, Ohio; Hartford, Connecticut; Rochester, New York; Trenton, New Jersey; and Wilmington, Delaware share the experience of having increasingly large, poor minority populations surrounded by mostly white, generally affluent suburbs. All five are similar mid-sized urban communities which have been consistently or intermittently involved with school desegregation. Historic and demographic issues, legal considerations, political, administrative, and community responsibility are explored by Stave as factors in the achievement of racial balance. Scores of interviews augment legal decisions and public documents. Stave finds that rapidly shifting populations make projections somewhat risky; however, respecting certain widely held concerns will make desegregation more likely. Parents seek a safe environment for their children and want to have a say in where their children are educated. Committed and charismatic leadership, extensive community participation, the availability of enhanced educational components to guarantee a high quality of education, cooperative city-state relations, and a metropolitan region large enough to discourage white flight are qualities likely to encourage the achievement of racial balance. An important reading for public officials and scholars involved with education policy, and urban and minority affairs.

Over recent years race has become one of the most important issues faced by the police. This book seeks to analyse the context and background to these changes, to assess the impact of the Lawrence Inquiry and the MacPherson Report, and to trace the growing emphasis on policing as an 'antiracist' activity, proactively confronting racism in both crime and non-crime situations. Contemporary American Immigrants provides an overview to the immigration history of three of the largest groups of Asian immigrants to the United States--Filipinos, Koreans, and Chinese. This timely volume addresses such questions as: how do these Asian immigrants adapt to our culture?; to what extent do they adjust and integrate? and are Asian immigrants a credit to American society? Using 1980 census data, the author reviews in detail the social and economic characteristics of these three immigrant groups. He also explores those characteristics for the most recent arrivals--those who came to the United States between 1980 and 1985--using data he collected in 1986 through interviews with 849 Filipino, Korean, and Chinese households. From his extensive research, Mangiafico concludes that the Asian immigrants surveyed and studied are enterprising, well-educated, and motivated individuals who greatly contribute to our society. He thus challenges the notions that immigrants in general are a burden to our society, and that they are changing our culture in ways which are not in the best interests of the United States.
