Contradictions of the Welfare State (Hardcover): Claus Offe Contradictions of the Welfare State (Hardcover)

R3,804 Discovery Miles 38 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The political writings in this volume are primarily concerned with the origins of the present difficulties of welfare capitalist states, and he indicates why in the present period, these states are no longer capable of fully managing the socio-political problems and conflicts generated by late capitalist societies. Offe discusses the viability of New Right, corporatist and democratic socialist proposals for restructuring the welfare state. He also offers fresh and penetrating insights into a range of other subjects, including social movements, political parties, law, social policy, and labour markets.

The Welfare State - Its Aims, Benefits and Costs (Hardcover): J.F. Sleeman The Welfare State - Its Aims, Benefits and Costs (Hardcover)
J.F. Sleeman
R3,366 Discovery Miles 33 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It focuses on the economic issue of meeting needs with scarce resources and compares the British experience with that of other countries. It sets out the pattern of the social services since Beveridge and summarises the criticisms levelled at them. It considers the economic issues involved and provides a straightforward presentation of the available policy choices, the discussion poses a direct comparison with other countries. The book offers an overall conspectus of current policy issues against the historical background from which they arise.

The Crisis of the University (Hardcover): Peter Scott The Crisis of the University (Hardcover)
Peter Scott
R3,377 Discovery Miles 33 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1984, The Crisis of the University looks at the way in which changes to intellectual life relate to the development of the different institutions that make up higher education. It examines the evolution of the liberal university that flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries into the modern university that has grown up since 1945. It also looks at the more detailed experience of British higher education, with separate chapters on what the Robbins expansion meant for the universities and why it was thought necessary to construct an alternative in the shape of the polytechnics. Looking to the future, the book argues first that the present structure of British higher education needs reform and speculates on the future intellectual and social demands that may be made of higher education.

Higher Education in the Post-Communist World - Case Studies of Eight Universities (Hardcover): Paula Sabloff Higher Education in the Post-Communist World - Case Studies of Eight Universities (Hardcover)
Paula Sabloff
R3,805 Discovery Miles 38 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1999, Higher Education in the Post-Communist World focuses on specific public universities during their, and their nations' early transition years (1989-1995) from communism to democracy and the changes from centrally planned, to free-market economies. The book offers a detailed view of universities in transition rather than case studies of entire systems of higher education, providing an opportunity for readers to understand the national politico-economic transition on higher education- individual faculty, students, and administrator; departments; and university - in a more immediate way than a system-wide approach would. The book presents information on specific universities and how the demise of the Soviet Union affected the governance, finance, faculty, students, and curriculum in several post-communist countries.

A Higher Education - The Council for National Academic Awards and British Higher Education 1964-1989 (Hardcover): Harold Silver A Higher Education - The Council for National Academic Awards and British Higher Education 1964-1989 (Hardcover)
Harold Silver
R2,456 Discovery Miles 24 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1990, A Higher Education was commissioned by the Council for National Academic Awards to commemorate its silver jubilee. The book covers the history of a period of rapid expansion in higher education outside the universities, mirrored in the growth and development of the CNAA. The Council was established with the role of awarding degree courses in polytechnics and colleges, and so its successes and strengths - as well as its problems and difficulties - reflect very closely the preoccupations and events of higher education since 1964. The book describes how the CNAA helped to broaden the range of degree courses beyond the traditional subjects, the way it maintained and enhanced standards in a swiftly changing academic world, and its part in widening access to higher education. The book draws on interviews as well as extensive records of the CNAA and some of its institutions.

The New Americans - How the Melting Pot Can Work Again (Paperback): Michael Barone The New Americans - How the Melting Pot Can Work Again (Paperback)
Michael Barone
R404 Discovery Miles 4 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In The New Americans, Michael Barone, senior writer at U.S. News & World Report, says that now, more than ever, the melting pot must be used to keep America great. Barone attacks multiculturalism and anti-American apologists--but he also rejects proposals for building a wall to keep immigrants out, or rounding up millions of illegals to send back home. Rather, the melting pot must be allowed to work (as it has for centuries) to teach new Americans the values, history, and unique spirit of America so they, too, can enjoy the American dream.

Marilyn Taylor, Mandy Wilson, Derrick Purdue, Pete Wilde
R603 Discovery Miles 6 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It follows the progress of 20 very different neighbourhood organisations across three countries to explore the opportunities and challenges of neighbourhood renewal from a community perspective. As well as testing out 'light touch' ways of offering support to community organisations, the report explores how different policies are working out on the ground; what it is realistic to expect of local residents and what needs to happen at agency level in order to address the 'implementation gap'. It will be valuable reading for policy makers and practitioners in the field of community engagement and neighbourhood renewal, as well as students and others who want an overview of how groups and organisations work at neighbourhood level in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Dilemmas of Development Work - Ethical Challenges in Regeneration (Hardcover, New): Paul Hoggett, Marjorie Mayo, Chris... The Dilemmas of Development Work - Ethical Challenges in Regeneration (Hardcover, New)
Paul Hoggett, Marjorie Mayo, Chris Miller
R2,164 Discovery Miles 21 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social development work takes place in the grey area between government and the voluntary and community sectors. This book, written by three well-known educators and researchers in the social policy and development field, explores the ways in which front-line professionals working with communities identify and address the dilemmas inherent in the current policy context. Drawing upon original material, the authors examine how 'community engagement' workers negotiate the ethical and emotional challenges they face; how they work through problems of community representation at interpersonal and team levels; how they manage the conflicting roles of local activist and paid worker and what role colleagues, management and others play when responding to such challenges. The dilemmas of development work reconnects to, and updates, an important tradition in social policy which explores the dilemmas of 'street-level' work. It draws on contemporary political theory and current debates concerning the modernisation of governance and psycho-social perspectives on identity, values and agency. Combining theory and practice, it will appeal to practitioners, policy makers and undergraduates in social and public policy.

Local Communities and Post-Communist Transformation - Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Paperback): Simon Smith Local Communities and Post-Communist Transformation - Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Paperback)
Simon Smith
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Post-communist transformation in the former Soviet bloc has had a profound effect, not just in the political and economic sphere, but on all aspects of life. Although a great deal has been written about transformation, much of it has been about transformation viewed from the top, and little has been written about how things have changed for ordinary people at the local level. This book, based on extensive original research, examines the changes resulting from transformation at the local level in the form Czechoslovakia. It considers especially local democracy, social movements, and work collectives, and paints a picture of people gradually growing in self-confidence and taking more control of their communities, having lived for decades in a framework where so much was directed from the top.

Great Britain - Identities, Institutions and the Idea of Britishness since 1500 (Hardcover): Keith Robbins Great Britain - Identities, Institutions and the Idea of Britishness since 1500 (Hardcover)
Keith Robbins
R4,238 Discovery Miles 42 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a timely exploration of national identity in Great Britain over nine hundred years of history. Our attitudes to the nation state are changing - national assemblies in Scotland and Wales and growing pressures for regional assemblies. In his vigorous new survey, Professor Robbins provides the background to these changing attitudes. He considers the development as well as the possible disintegration of the sense of "Britishness" among the inhabitants of Britain and investigates how - and why - they have preserved their own national and regional identities across several centuries of co-existence. Keith Robbins is Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales Lampeter. Among his many books, Longman has also published his highly successful study The Eclipse of a Great Power: Modern Britain 1870-1992 (Second Edition 1994). He is also General Editor of Longman's famous series ofProfiles in Power, with over 20 titles already in print and many more in preparation.

Economic Life of Mexican Beach Vendors - Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas (Hardcover, New): Tamar Diana Wilson Economic Life of Mexican Beach Vendors - Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas (Hardcover, New)
Tamar Diana Wilson
R3,455 R2,712 Discovery Miles 27 120 Save R743 (22%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Economic Life of Mexican Beach Vendors: Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas is based on interviews with 82 men and 84 women who vend their wares on beaches in three Mexican tourist centers. Assuming that some people may actively choose self-employment in the informal or semi-informal economy, the employment and educational aspirations of the vendors and their levels of satisfaction with their work are explored. Most of the vendors had other family members who were also vendors, and 75 (45.2 percent) had 5 or more family members who vended, most usually on Mexican beaches. The vendors are aware of the forces of globalization (though they do not express these forces in those words), as revealed by their responses to questions as to how the current world economic recession has affected them. The beach vendors live in essentially segregated neighborhoods that can be considered apartheid-like, far from the tourist zones. Most of the vendors or their parents are rural-to-urban migrants and cross ethnic, linguistic, and economic borders as they migrate to and work in what have been called transnational social spaces. Of the vendors interviewed, 82 (49.4 percent) speak an indigenous language, and of these, 60 (73.2 percent) speak Nahuatl. The majority are from the state of Guerrero, but there were also Zapotec-speakers from Oaxaca. Both indigenous and non-indigenous women take part in beach vending. They are often wives, daughters, or sisters of male beach vendors, and they may be single, married, living in free union, or widowed. Their income is often of central importance to the household economy. This monograph aims to bring their stories to tourists and to scholars and students of tourism development and /or the informal or semi-informal economy in Mexican tourist centers.

Welfare State and Welfare Society - Illusion and Reality (Hardcover): William Robson Welfare State and Welfare Society - Illusion and Reality (Hardcover)
William Robson
R2,939 Discovery Miles 29 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1976, Welfare State and Welfare Society breaks away from the prevailing notion that the welfare state is mainly concerned with the well-being of the entire nation. The book distinguishes the welfare state from the welfare society, and shows that there is often a yawning gulf between public policy and how people feel, think and behave. The book examines critically, the policies which have been adopted or advocated as relevant to a welfare state, and inquires how far the hopes and expectations centred on it have been realised.
