Droplet and Spray Transport: Paradigms and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Saptarshi Basu, Avinash Kumar Agarwal,... Droplet and Spray Transport: Paradigms and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Saptarshi Basu, Avinash Kumar Agarwal, Achintya Mukhopadhyay, Chetan Patel
R2,966 Discovery Miles 29 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on droplets and sprays and their applications. It discusses how droplet level transport is central to a multitude of applications and how droplet level manipulation and control can enhance the efficiency and design of multiphase systems. Droplets and sprays are ubiquitous in a variety of multiphase and multiscale applications in surface patterning, oil recovery, combustion, atomization, spray drying, thermal barrier coating, renewable energy, and electronic cooling, to name but a few. This book provides two levels of details pertaining to such applications. Each chapter delves into a specific application and provides not only an overview but also detailed physical insights into the application mechanism from the point of view of droplets and sprays. All chapters provide a mix of cutting-edge applications, new diagnostic techniques and modern computational methodologies, as well as the fundamental physical mechanism involved in each application. Taken together, the chapters provide a translational perspective on these applications, from basic transport processes to optimization, and from design to implementation using droplets or sprays as fundamental building blocks. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will be of interest to students, researchers, and industry professionals alike.

Organic Synthesis Engineering (Hardcover): L.K. Doraiswamy Organic Synthesis Engineering (Hardcover)
L.K. Doraiswamy
R2,201 Discovery Miles 22 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Catalysis, which until recently had largely been limited to the production of large volume chemical, is now being increasingly used in the production of medium and small volume chemicals. Simultaneously, the role of process intensification in enhancing overall productivity is being increasingly recognised. This usually takes the form of reaction rate enhancement by extending known or emerging laboratory techniques to industrial scale production. Organic Synthesis Engineering describes the application of catalysis in its various forms in organic synthesis, and addresses both the chemical and engineering aspects of catalysts (particularly solid catalysts). It also outlines different techniques of reaction rate and/or selectivity enhancement - a feature not found in any existing books on reaction engineering.

Modelling and Simulation in Thermal and Chemical Engineering - A Bond Graph Approach (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): J. Thoma, B. Ould... Modelling and Simulation in Thermal and Chemical Engineering - A Bond Graph Approach (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
J. Thoma, B. Ould Bouamama
R1,656 Discovery Miles 16 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is a great pleasure for me to introduce this book which has the main ambition to make thermodynamics more directly accessible to engineers and physicists by stressing the analogies with the other physical domains; this science has discouraged more than a few students. The book comes from the meeting of two persons: 1. Jean Thoma, inventor of hydrostatic machines and transmissions, pro fessor at the University of Waterloo (Canada), expert in simulation and pilgrim for the promotion of bond graphs around the world. 2. Belkacem Ould Bouamama, associated professor at the University of Science and Technology in Lille, France, specialist in industrial control and seduced by the richness and structure of the bond graph method. Thermodynamics is a difficult subject; its concepts like entropy, enthalpy, etc. are not intuitive and often very abstract. For this reason, it is current practice to neglect the thermal aspects, although they are necessarily there in all physical phenomena, and to use isothermal models. This is equivalent to think that the system is immersed in an infinite temperature reservoir and maintains its temperature constant even if it receives or dissipates electric and other type of energy. For heat transfer and variable temperature, if it should be included, the classical approach is to study the changes between equilibrium states, and not the process itself, which is more a thermostatic than a thermodynamic approach. This is justified when only the constraints of equilibrium state must be satisfied."

Process Control - Theory and Applications (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Jean-Pierre Corriou Process Control - Theory and Applications (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Jean-Pierre Corriou
R6,035 Discovery Miles 60 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Process Control, a wide range of identification and control methods applicable to processes are accompanied by typical comparable examples, encouraging you to make comparisons.

The initial classical approach to continuous control by transfer functions will be of enormous benefit, whether you are a student beginning in control or an engineer in industry who, up until now, has only had a superficial or empirical contact with control. The more advanced material on discrete control and state-space control, as well as nonlinear control and observers, requires minimal previous knowledge, allowing you to make better use of techniques with proven performance.

a [ Introduces concepts of progressively increasing difficulty, smoothing the path to learning the more advanced theories and control methods.

a [ For each topic, the theories, techniques and algorithms are presented in detail, with numberous references.

a [ The comparative consideration of different approaches to similar problems deepens your understanding.

a [ Examples that you can reproduce to master the different techniques.

Broad coverage creates an important synthesis of the spectrum of control theory and its process-industry-related applications. Different levels of reading are possible, opening this powerful source of information to engineers, academics, researchers and students alike.

Determinants in the Evolution of the European Chemical Industry, 1900-1939 - New Technologies, Political Frameworks, Markets... Determinants in the Evolution of the European Chemical Industry, 1900-1939 - New Technologies, Political Frameworks, Markets and Companies (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Anthony S. Travis, Harm G Schroeter, Ernst Homburg, Peter J.T. Morris
R6,562 Discovery Miles 65 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The editors wish to thank the European Science Foundation for its support of the programme on the Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939, as well as for sponsoring the publication of this volume. Through the subdivision of this initiative that deals specifically with chemical industry it has been possible for historians of science, technology, business and economics to share often widely differing viewpoints and develop consensus across disciplinary and cultural boundaries. The contents of this volume are based on the third of three workshops that have considered the emergence of the modern European chemical industry prior to 1939, the first held in Liege (1994), the second in Maastricht (1995), and the third in Strasbourg (1996). All contributors and participants are thanked for their participation in often lively and informative debates. The generous hospitality of the European Science Foundation and its staff in Strasbourg is gratefully acknowledged. Introduction Emerging chemical knowledge and the development of chemical industry, and particularly the interaction between them, offer rich fields of study for the historian. This is reflected in the contents of the three workshops dealing with the emergence of chemical industry held under the aegis of the European Science Foundation's Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939, programme. The first workshop focused mainly on science for industry, 1789- 1850, and the second on the two-way traffic between science and industry, 1850-1914. The third workshop, dealing with the period 1900-1939, covers similar issues, but within different, and wider, contexts.

The Politics of Chemical Risk: Scenarios for a Regulatory Future (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): R. Bal, Willem Halffman The Politics of Chemical Risk: Scenarios for a Regulatory Future (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
R. Bal, Willem Halffman
R4,405 Discovery Miles 44 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

All industrial countries have developed regulatory systems to assess and manage the risk of chemical substances to the working and natural environment. The pressure to harmonize these often specialized regulatory systems is increasingly strong at the international level. Such harmonization not only entails the assessment of particular chemicals, but also the way assessment procedures and their boundary with risk management is organized. As these initiatives intensify, they increasingly raise important questions of how to integrate national differences in the international regulatory arena. How will national consultation procedures relate to international decision-making on chemical risks? How will differences in national risk assessment procedures be accommodated? How will the international regulatory system be integrated with different national styles of regulation and government? Presenting the experiences and insights of both people from within the worlds of risk assessment and management and from the field of Science Studies, this book forms a state-of-the-art in the discussion on the Politics of Chemical Risk. By offering scenarios, or sketches of a regulatory future, it points to the choices that can be made and the opportunities to be explored. As such, it offers an agenda for environmental and occupational scientists, policy-makers and students of science and technology alike.

Computational Methods for Process Simulation (Hardcover, 2nd edition): W. Fred Ramirez Computational Methods for Process Simulation (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
W. Fred Ramirez
R2,607 Discovery Miles 26 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Process Modelling and simulation have proved to be extremely successful engineering tools for the design and optimisation of physical, chemical and biochemical processes. The use of simulation has expanded rapidly over the last two decades because of the availability of large high-speed computers and indeed has become even more widespread with the rise of the desk-top PC resources now available to nearly every engineer and student.
In the chemical industry large, realistic non-linear problems are routinely solved with the aid of computer simulation. This has a number of benefits, including easy assessment of the economic desirability of a project, convenient investigation of the effects of changes to system variables, and finally the introduction of mathematical rigour into the design process and inherent assumptions that may not have been there before.
'Computational Methods for Process Simulation' develops the methods needed for the simulation of real processes to be found in the process industries. It also stresses the engineering fundamentals used in developing process models. Steady state and dynamic systems are considered, for both spatially lumped and spatially distributed problems. It develops analytical and numerical computational techniques for algebraic, ordinary and partial differential equations, and makes use of computer software routines that are widely available. Dedicated software examples are available via the internet.

Flow Chemistry for the Synthesis of Heterocycles (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Upendra K. Sharma, Erik V. Van Der Eycken Flow Chemistry for the Synthesis of Heterocycles (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Upendra K. Sharma, Erik V. Van Der Eycken
R9,127 Discovery Miles 91 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume provides an overview of recent developments and scope in the use of flow chemistry in relevance to heterocyclic synthesis. The heterocyclic ring is the most prominent structural motif in the vast majority of natural products as well as pharmaceutical compounds since this facilitates tuneable interactions with the biological target besides conferring a degree of structural and metabolic stability. In recent times, flow chemistry has heralded a paradigm shift in organic synthesis as it offers several unique advantages over conventional methods like drastic acceleration of sluggish transformations, enhanced yields, cleaner reactions etc and is gradually gaining a lot of attention among organic chemist worldwide. Given the importance of heterocycles in natural products, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceuticals, this is a well warranted volume and complements the previous volume of Topics in Organometallic Chemistry 'Organometallic Flow Chemistry'. This volume offers a versatile overview of the topic, besides discussing the recent progress in the flourishing area of flow chemistry in relevance to heterocyclic chemistry; it will also help researchers to better understand the chemistry behind these reactions. This in turn provides a platform for future innovations towards the designing of novel transformations under continuous flow. Thus, this volume will appeal to both the novices in this field as well as to experts in academia and industry.

Electrochemical Process Engineering - A Guide to the Design of Electrolytic Plant (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): F. Goodridge, K. Scott Electrochemical Process Engineering - A Guide to the Design of Electrolytic Plant (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
F. Goodridge, K. Scott
R7,741 Discovery Miles 77 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As the subtitle indicates, the overriding intention of the authors has been to provide a practical guide to the design of electrolytic plant. We wanted to show that the procedures for the design and optimization of such a plant are essentially simple and can be performed by readers comparatively new to the electrochemical field. It was important to realize that electrochemical engineering should not be confused with applied electrochemistry but had to be based on the principles of chemical engineering. For this reason, reference is often made to standard chemical engineering texts. Since this is a practical guide rather than a textbook, we have included a large number of worked examples on the principle that a good worked example is worth many paragraphs of text. In some examples we have quoted costs, e.g., of chemicals, plant or services. These costs are merely illustrative; current values will have to be obtained from manufacturers or journals. If this is not possible, approximate methods are available for updating costs to present-day values (see Refs. 1 and 3, Chapter 6).

Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology - Recovery of Primary and Secondary Metabolites (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): Karl Schugerl Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology - Recovery of Primary and Secondary Metabolites (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
Karl Schugerl
R4,475 Discovery Miles 44 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology deals with the reco- very and purification of primary and secondary metabolites by solvent extraction. In the first part the reaction engineering principles: definitions, thermodynamic fundamentals, and system models, the kinetics of mass transfer between two phases without and with chemical reaction as well as extraction equipment, which are important for downstream processing in biotechnology, are considered in detail. The special part of the book describes the recovery of low-molecular metabolites: alcohols, acids and antibiotics with organic solvents, carrier-modifier-solvent systems, supercritical gases as well as with liquid membrane techniques. Several practical examples are given for the recovery of different metabolites as well as for the calculation of the extraction processes necessary for equipment design. Besides solvent extraction, novel separation techniques with liquid membrane, microemulsion and reversed micelles are also presented. This book will introduce the biochemical engineer and process engineer to the recovery of products from complex cultivation broths by modern techniques of solvent extraction and help them with process design.

OntoCAPE - A Re-Usable Ontology for Chemical Process Engineering (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Wolfgang Marquardt, Jan Morbach,... OntoCAPE - A Re-Usable Ontology for Chemical Process Engineering (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Wolfgang Marquardt, Jan Morbach, Andreas Wiesner, Aidong Yang
R4,639 Discovery Miles 46 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Motivation for this Book Ontologies have received increasing attention over the last two decades. Their roots can be traced back to the ancient philosophers, who were interested in a c- ceptualization of the world. In the more recent past, ontologies and ontological engineering have evolved in computer science, building on various roots such as logics, knowledge representation, information modeling and management, and (knowledge-based) information systems. Most recently, largely driven by the next generation internet, the so-called Semantic Web, ontological software engineering has developed into a scientific field of its own, which puts particular emphasis on the theoretical foundations of representation and reasoning, and on the methods and tools required for building ontology-based software applications in diverse domains. Though this field is largely dominated by computer science, close re- tionships have been established with its diverse areas of application, where - searchers are interested in exploiting the results of ontological software engine- ing, particularly to build large knowledge-intensive applications at high productivity and low maintenance effort. Consequently, a large number of scientific papers and monographs have been p- lished in the very recent past dealing with the theory and practice of ontological software engineering. So far, the majority of those books are dedicated to the th- retical foundations of ontologies, including philosophical treatises and their re- tionships to established methods in information systems and ontological software engineering.
