Peter Sagal, the host of NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! and a
popular columnist for Runner's World, shares "commentary and
reflection about running with a deeply felt personal story, this
book is winning, smart, honest, and affecting. Whether you are a
runner or not, it will move you" (Susan Orlean). On the verge of
turning forty, Peter Sagal-brainiac Harvard grad, short bald Jew
with a disposition towards heft, and a sedentary star of public
radio-started running seriously. And much to his own surprise, he
kept going, faster and further, running fourteen marathons and
logging tens of thousands of miles on roads, sidewalks, paths, and
trails all over the United States and the world, including the 2013
Boston Marathon, where he crossed the finish line moments before
the bombings. In The Incomplete Book of Running, Sagal reflects on
the trails, tracks, and routes he's traveled, from the humorous
absurdity of running charity races in his underwear-in St. Louis,
in February-or attempting to "quiet his colon" on runs around his
neighborhood-to the experience of running as a guide to visually
impaired runners, and the triumphant post-bombing running of the
Boston Marathon in 2014. With humor and humanity, Sagal also writes
about the emotional experience of running, body image, the
similarities between endurance sports and sadomasochism, the legacy
of running as passed down from parent to child, and the odd but
extraordinary bonds created between strangers and friends. The
result is "a brilliant book about running...What Peter runs toward
is strength, understanding, endurance, acceptance, faith, hope, and
charity" (P.J. O'Rourke).
An Economic Geography of Oil, first published in 1963, analyses the
reasons behind the spatial distribution of the different sectors of
the world oil industry. In the first part of the book, Peter Odell
examines the pattern of the world supply of oil, showing the
important changes that took place between 1945 and the early 1960s
and highlighting the physical, economic, political and
organizational factors which contributed to these developments. In
the second part, Odell analyses the relationship between oil and
other sources of energy, together with the more fundamental
relationship between energy consumption in different areas of the
world, and economic development. Finally, attention is paid to
those aspects of the industry which are concerned with getting the
oil from the point of production to that of consumption; the
refining industry, transportation requirements and local
distribution patterns are studied. These strands are drawn together
in a relevant and interesting conclusion, which considers the
overall impact of the oil industry on economic and industrial
development.
Within qualitative research in the social sciences, the last decade
has witnessed a growing interest in the use of visual methods.

of sport and exercise sciences dedicated to harnessing the
potential of using visual methods within qualitative research.

might they be used, and how might they be applied in the field of
sport and exercise sciences. This volume combines clarity of
expression with careful scholarship and originality, making it
especially appealing to students and scholars within a variety of
fields, including sport sociology, sport and exercise psychology,
sociology of the body, physical education, gender studies,
gerontology, and qualitative inquiry. This book was published as a
special issue in Qualitative Research in Sport and Exercise.
An effective strength and conditioning program is an essential
component of the preparation of any athlete or sportsperson.

and authoritative introduction to the theory and practice of
strength and conditioning, providing students, coaches and athletes

training programs. Revised and updated for a second edition, the
book continues to include clear and rigorous explanations of the
core science underpinning strength and conditioning techniques and
give detailed, step-by-step guides to all key training
methodologies, including training for strength, speed, endurance,
flexibility and plyometrics. The second edition expands on the
opening coaching section as well as introducing an entirely new
section on current training methods which includes examining skill
acquisition and motor learning. Throughout the book the focus is on
the coaching process, with every chapter highlighting the
application of strength and conditioning techniques in everyday
coaching situations. Strength and Conditioning for Sports
Performance includes a unique and extensive section of

from soccer and basketball to golf and track and field athletics.
The second edition sees this section expanded to include other

Often football coaches find that to keep their players motivated
and engaged, they must create new practices every week. But when
there are those particular practices that the players enjoy playing
again and again which also provide the ideal environment for them
to develop, why not use them more than once? Essential Practices
for Player Development will provide the reader with 10 core
football practice sessions that the players will find both
enjoyable and challenging and that the coach will find develops key
areas of the game. There are 9 adaptations provided with each core
practice, making 100 practices in total. Every practice is linked
to one key area of the game that is identified as being essential
to player development. To support practice delivery, the book
additionally covers key aspects of session planning so that the
most effective learning environment can be produced for the
players. Also included is information on long-term player
development, recognizing and supporting individual player needs,
interventions, and player challenges. This book is not only a
resource for football coaches just starting out on their coaching
journey, but it is also for more experienced coaches looking to
adapt their practice sessions. All practices provided can be used
exclusively to create training curriculum for a full season,
meaning there is no need for a coach to create a new session every
week. The sessions can also be used to form the foundations of the
curriculum, leaving room for a coach to add in those favorite
practices. Essential Practices for Player Development is a book
coaches will refer back to time and again.
A timely, unbiased look at the positive and negative effects of
school-sponsored sports on the American education system. At a time
when sports coverage inundates the airwaves, when coaches are
routinely among the highest-paid school employees, and when
professional sports recruiters are increasingly focusing on high
school students, Sports and Education offers a balanced,
thought-provoking look at a deep-cutting issue. Is it time for the
United States to mirror a number of other industrialized countries
and remove sports from educational settings, as many education and
athletic professionals have suggested? Sports and Education
challenges many long-held assumptions and examines all viewpoints
surrounding this question. The result is a clear-eyed,
research-supported look at both the positive and the negative
impact of school-sponsored athletics on the participants, their
nonparticipating classmates, parents, coaches, fans, educators, and
school boards. A comprehensive introduction provides the framework
for an in-depth presentation of the most frequently debated issues
related to sport as an educational aspect of society A chronology
details the evolution of sport and education with topics such as
the Olympic games, sport in formal educational settings, and when
specific sports were established at the professional level
It's not easy being a parent of sporty kids. On an almost daily
basis kids go through ups and downs in training and competition and
as a parent, it can be challenging to know how to help - 'I wasn't
selected again, mum, and I'm not sure I want to play anymore.' In
Red Dot Parenting, former Scotland rugby star and Institute of
Sport mentor, Tony Stanger, shows parents what they can do to help
when these moments happen. Parents are NOT the coach. But they do
have a crucial role in supporting their child's sporting education.
Stanger draws on years of experience as an elite athlete, talent
systems expert and father of three sporty kids. He is passionate
about helping parents to better understand their role in supporting
their children to reach their sporting potential. This is a book
for parents of kids at any level who love sport and want to get as
much out of it as they can. Parents will learn the danger of young
people having too much early success and being labelled a superstar
junior. The book explains why kids who are not so good when they
are young are often the ones who have the best chance of long-term
success. Based on robust science yet presented in an easy to read
and understand format, this book is full of tips and ideas parents
can put into practise straight away to build on the things they
already do well. The evidence tells us parents are crucial in
children achieving their goals in sport, this book explains what
they can do to help.
