Jeroen Koekoek, Ivo Van Hilvoorde
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Social Science of Sport - A critical analysis (Paperback): Bo Carlsson, Susanna Hedenborg The Social Science of Sport - A critical analysis (Paperback)
Bo Carlsson, Susanna Hedenborg
R1,485 Discovery Miles 14 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book questions about definitions and demarcations of sport science are discussed. Not the least the many normative ideas of sport as good or as bad are problematized in relation to the academic field. These ideas permeate sport science in ways that are not seen in other academic fields like history, sociology or law. In addition, if and if so, in what ways sport science influence social science in general. Does sport science bring new questions in relation to issues like "what makes a society possible" or "what is a human being"? This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Moral Panic in Physical Education and Coaching (Paperback): Heather Piper, Dean Garratt, Bill Taylor Moral Panic in Physical Education and Coaching (Paperback)
Heather Piper, Dean Garratt, Bill Taylor
R1,431 Discovery Miles 14 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on sports coaching and sports teaching and how touching young sports participants has been redefined as dubious and dangerous. Coaches are constrained by a framework of regulations and guidelines which create anxiety, and many coaches now question the risks and benefits of their continuing involvement. The book includes some data from a recently completed ESRC project: ('Hands-off' sports coaching: the politics of touch) and builds on previous ESRC research (Touchlines - the problematic of touching between children and professionals) which illuminated tensions in touching behaviours between professionals and children in education and care settings. It considers the negative effects of particular understandings of risk and moral panic around touching and related behaviours where adults, children and young people interact, and makes a significant contribution to critical discussions around related practice, pedagogy, politics, and policy. While focussed on sports coaching and teaching, it is germane to the situation of all those acting in loco parentis. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport Education and Society.

The Value of Events (Hardcover): Erik Lundberg, John Armbrecht, Tommy D Andersson, Donald Getz The Value of Events (Hardcover)
Erik Lundberg, John Armbrecht, Tommy D Andersson, Donald Getz
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Value of Events fills an important niche in the literature on events, being the first book to comprehensively deal with the subject of value creation and measurement, as opposed to impact assessment and programme evaluation. Value creation and measurement is often done routinely from specific perspectives such as tourism, event management, corporate marketing, or customer satisfaction. However, there exist a number of discourses on value and evaluation that have not yet received adequate attention, including the justification of governmental intervention and the costs and benefits of hosting major events. This edited book, written by an international group of academics with expertise in the relevant fields of events, tourism, sport and culture, offers new insight into events and their relationship to sustainability, social responsibility, cultural and social value. Fostering debate in the context of conceptual thinking, philosophising, multiple stakeholder perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches, it challenges the events industry, students, policy-makers and strategists with new perspectives on value, with implications for impact forecasting and assessment. This is a book for all students pursuing degrees in fields where planned events are important topics, while being of great interest to researchers, policy-makers, evaluators and organisers/managers of planned events. Within a subject in need of further attention, The Value of Events offers the most comprehensive overview of event value to date.

Critical Essays in Sport Management - Exploring and Achieving a Paradigm Shift (Hardcover): Andy Gillentine, Robert Baker,... Critical Essays in Sport Management - Exploring and Achieving a Paradigm Shift (Hardcover)
Andy Gillentine, Robert Baker, Jacquelyn Cuneen
R3,994 Discovery Miles 39 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection of essays, written by a number of respected sport management scholars, addresses many of the challenges and issues facing today's sport management academic programs. It is intended to begin a professional and scholarly discussion to identify the best, or at least the most logical, paths to follow for sport management programs and the industry with which they are so closely aligned. Contributors, invited to participate based on their recognized areas of expertise, address specific topics using their own unique voices and writing styles. In the ebook version, essays link to video introductions by the authors and to online discussion forums where readers can respond to the issues presented in the essays. From the Preface: The field of sport management stands at an academic crossroads; the essays in this book address the following and other emerging questions: Should our successful field of study continue to model other disciplines and perpetuate their successes, as well as their shortcomings, or should we determine our own specific model for academic success? How are we doing in preparing future sport managers to perform in the industry and on the global stage? Where do we belong in the scheme of academe? The book's goal is to generate discussion among sport management professors, industry professionals who serve as adjunct faculty and participate on sport management program advisory boards, doctoral students who intend to teach in sport management programs, and others who explore and critique higher education in general.

Media, Culture, and the Meanings of Hockey - Constructing a Canadian Hockey World, 1896-1907 (Hardcover): Stacy L. Lorenz Media, Culture, and the Meanings of Hockey - Constructing a Canadian Hockey World, 1896-1907 (Hardcover)
Stacy L. Lorenz
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines the cultural meanings of high-level amateur and professional hockey in Canada during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, the author analyzes English Canadian media narratives of Stanley Cup "challenge" games and championship series between 1896 and 1907. Newspaper coverage and telegraph reconstructions of Stanley Cup challenges contributed significantly to the growth of a mediated Canadian "hockey world" - and a broader "world of sport" - during this time period. By 1903, Stanley Cup hockey games had become national Canadian events, followed by audiences across the country. Hockey also played an important role in the construction of gender and class identities, and in debates about amateurism, professionalism, and community representation in sport. The author also explores the connections between violence and masculinity in Canadian hockey by examining media descriptions of "brutal" and "strenuous" play. He analyzes how notions of civic identity changed as hockey clubs evolved from amateur teams represented by players who were members of their home community to professional aggregations that included paid imports from outside the town. As a result, this volume addresses important gaps in the study of sport history and the analysis of sport and popular culture. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Sport, Race and Ethnicity - The Scope of Belonging? (Paperback): Katie Liston, Paddy Dolan Sport, Race and Ethnicity - The Scope of Belonging? (Paperback)
Katie Liston, Paddy Dolan
R1,103 R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Save R68 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Analyses of racialisation processes within and beyond sport would be incomplete without a consideration of ethnicity and ethnic identities. Why? Because ethnicity, as a concept and as a focus for research, captures better the diverse experiences of social groups and the scope of belonging. Ethnic identities contribute to the way race and racism is constructed and experienced in sport, and to the ways in which racial ideologies are created, recreated and contested. Readers will find here a stimulating array of papers that capture varied aspects of the sport, race and ethnicity nexus around the world. The journey stretches as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ghana and the USA and, in so doing, it draws on a range of disciplinary approaches that converge or diverge by degrees. Such diversity is to be welcomed in an academic field characterized increasingly by the potential richness of people's experiences of sport, race and ethnicity within various cultural contexts. Included here are papers from a range of disciplines and approaches including sociology, politics, sports feminisms, critical race theory, a strengths perspective, Kaupapa Maori Theory, history and sports development. This book was published as a special issue of Sport and Society.

Robert G. McMurray
R3,695 Discovery Miles 36 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Concepts in Fitness Programming presents comprehensive material about various aspects of exercise testing and prescription in a simple, straightforward manner. Intended for individuals who design exercise and fitness programs but who lack extensive background in fitness training, this book provides a wealth of knowledge beyond the basic "how to's" of fitness programming. Daniel Rhind, Frank Owusu-Sekyere
R4,133 Discovery Miles 41 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Safeguarding should be a central concern for any sports organisation working with children or young people. Including critical perspectives and in-depth real-life case studies, this book looks beyond perpetrator, victim and abuse to focus on the development of a systematic safeguarding culture. The first study to adopt a global perspective on safeguarding in sport, it draws on the insights of researchers and practitioners to discuss best practise for child welfare, organisational reform, policy implementation and directions for future research. Christine Macintyre
R3,528 Discovery Miles 35 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

David Behm
R1,207 Discovery Miles 12 070 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Stretching is a fundamentally important part of sport and exercise, playing a role in improving performance, and preventing injury and rehabilitation, but its scientific underpinnings have, to this point, been overlooked in book publishing. The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book to cover the underlying physiology and psychology of stretching, critically assessing why, when, and how we should stretch, as well as offering a highly illustrated, practical guide to stretching exercises. Placing stretching in the context of both health and performance, the first section of the book sets out the science behind stretching, critically assessing the benefits, disadvantages, and roles of different types of stretching, exploring the mechanisms behind increasing range-of-movement through stretching and other methods, and offering evidence-based guidance on building stretching into warm-ups. In its second section, the book provides a step-by-step guide to static, dynamic, and PRF stretching exercises for beginners, through recreational athletes, to elite performers. Richly illustrated, and including an online resource, The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching provides an important scientific enquiry into stretching, and an invaluable reference for any strength and conditioning coach or student, personal trainer, sports coach, or exercise scientist.

Olympic Event Organization (Hardcover): Eleni Theodoraki Olympic Event Organization (Hardcover)
Eleni Theodoraki
R3,991 Discovery Miles 39 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Olympic Event Organization is the first text to address a number of important questions in contemporary mega-event management: Which organizations are involved in the Olympic Movement and in what capacity? What are the interorganizational flows of authority and finance between them? How is work grouped, in what unit sizes, how specialized and formalized are work processes? How complex, dynamic, diversified, or friendly is their environment? What are the power issues and how do the technological processes affect these organizations? How do the OCOGs evolve in their life cycle, what pressures shape their structures and management processes and how is work co-ordinated? The examination of the Olympic Games event organization in the 10-year period, from bidding to post-games closing down, draws material from host cities to explore the types of interorganizational flows that take place at various stages for the Olympic Games to be delivered. Knowledge transfer from one host city to the next and an established organizational field also means that management practises sometimes follow some externally imposed organizing logics. The challenges faced by organizers are discussed and the tensions that a strong management template from the IOC creates are also examined. Finally, the issue of sustainability of the Olympic Games is identified along with an analysis of the ways in which the concepts of impact are appropriated by the various stakeholders involved with the Olympic Games as they attempt to influence public opinion. Written in an accessible and insightful manner Olympic Event Organization is essential reading for both academics and practitioners alike.

Phenomenology and Pedagogy in Physical Education (Paperback): Oyvind Standal Phenomenology and Pedagogy in Physical Education (Paperback)
Oyvind Standal
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Phenomenology is a philosophical approach to the study of consciousness and subjective experience. In recent years it has become a more prominent element of the social scientific study of sport and a core component of the important emergent concept of physical literacy. This book is the first to offer a philosophically-sound investigation of phenomenological perspectives on pedagogy in physical education. The book argues that phenomenology offers a particularly interesting theoretical approach to physical education because of the closely embodied relationship between the knowledge object (the actions, activities and practices of movement) and the knowing subject (the pupil). Drawing on the work of key phenomenological thinkers but also exploring the implications of this work for teaching practice, the book helps to illuminate our understanding of important concepts in physical education such as practical knowledge, skill acquisition, experience and ethics. This is fascinating reading for any serious student or researcher working in physical education or the philosophy or sociology of sport.
