The Laboratory Recorder (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1974): Galen Ewing The Laboratory Recorder (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1974)
Galen Ewing
R1,364 Discovery Miles 13 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

One of the most universal functions of any scientific or engineer ing laboratory is the gathering of data to provide answers to immediate questions or information to be filed for future refer ence. Such data gathering may be achieved in various ways, depending on the nature and quantity of the information. The most prevalent of such data gathering methods is undoubtedly analog recording. Electrical analog recorders are available in a variety of sizes, speeds, sensitivities, and prices. They are suitable for recording any signal which is in, or can be converted to, electrical form. These recorders are found in every modern laboratory. Without them the importance of many functional relations would be missed altogether. How could one adequately diagnose a heart ailment without a cardiographic recorder, or obtain infrared or magnetic resonance spectra on any practicable basis without a strip-chart recorder? True, various curves that are now traced automatically with a recorder can be plotted manually from point-by-point measure ments. This procedure, however, is not only time-consuming, but may cause valid bits of information to be overlooked entirely, simply because the points were taken too far apart. Another factor favoring the use of recorders is the ability to pinpoint faulty operation of the data-gathering system. Artifacts that might not be observable at all in point-by-point observations 1 The Laboratory Recorder 2 will often be readily identifiable on a recording. Asymmetry of a peaked curve, for example, is only dearly evident in a recording.

Ambient Diagnostics (Paperback): Yang Cai Ambient Diagnostics (Paperback)
Yang Cai
R1,998 Discovery Miles 19 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ambient Diagnostics addresses innovative methods for discovering patterns from affordable devices, such as mobile phones, watches, cameras, and game interfaces, to interpret multimedia data for personal health monitoring and diagnosis. This is the first comprehensive textbook on multidisciplinary innovations in affordable healthcare-from sensory fusion, pattern detection, to classification. Connecting the Dots The material in this book combines sensing, pattern recognition, and visual design, and is divided into four parts, which cover fundamentals, multimedia intelligence, pervasive sensors, and crowdsourcing. The author describes basic pattern discovery models, sound, color, motion and video analytics, and pattern discovery from games and social networks. Each chapter contains the material's main concepts, as well as case studies, and extensive study questions. Contains overviews about diagnostic sensors on mobile phones Reflects the rapidly growing platforms for remote sensing, gaming, and social networking Incorporates cognitive tests such as fatigue detection Includes pseudo code and sample code Provides vision algorithms and multimedia analytics Covers Multimedia Intelligence Extensively Ambient Diagnostics includes concepts for ambient technologies such as point-and-search, the pill camera, active sensing with Kinect, digital human labs, negative and relative feature spaces, and semantic representations. The book also introduces methods for collective intelligence from online video games and social media.

Atomic Force Microscopy - Fundamental Concepts and Laboratory Investigations (Hardcover): Wesley C Sanders Atomic Force Microscopy - Fundamental Concepts and Laboratory Investigations (Hardcover)
Wesley C Sanders
R4,487 Discovery Miles 44 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses primarily on the atomic force microscope and serves as a reference for students, postdocs, and researchers using atomic force microscopes for the first time. In addition, this book can serve as the primary text for a semester-long introductory course in atomic force microscopy. There are a few algebra-based mathematical relationships included in the book that describe the mechanical properties, behaviors, and intermolecular forces associated with probes used in atomic force microscopy. Relevant figures, tables, and illustrations also appear in each chapter in an effort to provide additional information and points of interest. This book includes suggested laboratory investigations that provide opportunities to explore the versatility of the atomic force microscope. These laboratory exercises include opportunities for experimenters to explore force curves, surface roughness, friction loops, conductivity imaging, and phase imaging.

Delay Effects on Stability - A Robust Control Approach (Paperback, 2001 ed.): Silviu-Iulian Niculescu Delay Effects on Stability - A Robust Control Approach (Paperback, 2001 ed.)
Silviu-Iulian Niculescu
R4,157 Discovery Miles 41 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph is devoted to the effect of delays on the stability properties of dynamical systems. Stability regions with respect to the delay parameters are considered, and some sufficient characterizations are proposed. This monograph addresses general delay problems and offers solutions in some cases. In other cases, approximations of the stability regions can be proposed. The interpretation of delays as uncertainty allows the authors to use the advances in robust control and robust convex optimization to solve or to approximate the solutions of the corresponding problems.

Unmanned and Autonomous Ships - An Overview of MASS (Hardcover): R. Glenn Wright Unmanned and Autonomous Ships - An Overview of MASS (Hardcover)
R. Glenn Wright
R3,367 Discovery Miles 33 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Unmanned ships and autonomous ships are quickly becoming a reality, making shipping safer and more efficient. However, traditional tasks and functions are becoming blurred as new technology changes how the unique needs of different sectors are met. In addition to large vessels dedicated to the transport of goods and cargos across the oceans, major efforts are underway towards the automation of small coastal shipping that includes ferries, tugboats, supply and service vessels, and barges. Automated vehicles are also replacing conventional ships for inspecting and servicing pipelines, drilling platforms, wind farms and other offshore installations. Automated shipping is explored in terms of economics, technology, safety and the environment under the broad themes of ship design and engineering, command and control, navigation, communications, security, regulatory issues, and training. This includes initiatives for autonomous shipping as well as civilian implications of military ship automation programs. This book is primarily for maritime professionals, regulatory authorities, insurers, and environmental groups. It also suits undergraduate students involved in deck officer training, and graduate students and academics involved in research in ship design, operations and management.
