This undergraduate textbook reviews psychological research in the
major areas of reasoning and thinking: deduction, induction,
hypothesis testing, probability judgement, and decision making. It
also covers the major theoretical debates in each area, and devotes
a chapter to one of the liveliest issues in the field: the question
of human rationality. Central themes that recur throughout the book
include not only rationality, but also the relation between
normative theories such as logic, probability theory, and decision
theory, and human performance, both in experiments and in the world
outside the laboratory. No prior acquaintance with formal systems
is assumed, and everyday examples are used throughout to illustrate
technical and theoretical points.
By comparison with the other facets of intelligence, the analytical role provided by intelligence agencies has not received the scholarly attention that it rightly deserves. In October 1994 the Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS) and the Intelligence Section of the International Studies Association (ISA) attended to this deficit by holding a special international conference on the subject in Ottawa. This volume is the product of that conference. The essays comprising it may be divided into four self-contained sets of essays. The first critically examines the assessment systems now in place in Britain, the USA, Germany and Australia. Each is written by someone who participated at a senior level and hence knows their respective strengths and weaknesses well. The second series of essays looks at the bureaucratic dynamics of analysis and assessment. While two specifically examine how well intelligence producers have related to their political masters, another dissects the internal relationships that have developed between CIA analysts and their managers. The changing ground that intelligence is currently experiencing is the focus of the third section. Here such new analytical priorities as the environment, peacekeeping and arms proliferation are singled out for study. Finally, the volume considers the impact of new technologies and modes of communication on intelligence gathering and analysis.
This volume presents a state-of-the-science review of the most
promising current European research -- and its historic roots of
research -- on complex problem solving (CPS) in Europe. It is an
attempt to close the knowledge gap among American scholars
regarding the European approach to understanding CPS. Although most
of the American researchers are well aware of the fact that CPS has
been a very active research area in Europe for quite some time,
they do not know any specifics about even the most important
research. Part of the reason for this lack of knowledge is
undoubtedly the fact that European researchers -- for the most part
-- have been rather reluctant to publish their work in
English-language journals.
The purpose of our research is to enhance the efficiency of AI problem solvers by automating representation changes. We have developed a system that improves the description of input problems and selects an appropriate search algorithm for each given problem. Motivation. Researchers have accumulated much evidence on the impor tance of appropriate representations for the efficiency of AI systems. The same problem may be easy or difficult, depending on the way we describe it and on the search algorithm we use. Previous work on the automatic im provement of problem descriptions has mostly been limited to the design of individual learning algorithms. The user has traditionally been responsible for the choice of algorithms appropriate for a given problem. We present a system that integrates multiple description-changing and problem-solving algorithms. The purpose of the reported work is to formalize the concept of representation and to confirm the following hypothesis: An effective representation-changing system can be built from three parts: * a library of problem-solving algorithms; * a library of algorithms that improve problem descriptions; * a control module that selects algorithms for each given problem.
The design and functioning of an information system improve to the extent that the system can handle the questions people ask. Surprisingly, however, researchers in the cognitive, computer, and information sciences have not thoroughly examined the multitude of relationships between information systems and questions -- both question asking and answering. The purpose of this book is to explicitly examine these relationships. Chapter contributors believe that questions play a central role in the analysis, design, and use of different kinds of natural or artificial information systems such as human cognition, social interaction, communication networks, and intelligent tutoring systems. This book is the result of a NATO sponsored workshop entitled "Student Modelling: The Key to Individualized Knowledge-Based Instruction" which was held May 4-8, 1991 at Ste. Adele, Quebec, Canada. The workshop was co-directed by Gordon McCalla and Jim Greer of the ARIES Laboratory at the University of Saskatchewan. The workshop focused on the problem of student modelling in intelligent tutoring systems. An intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is a computer program that is aimed at providing knowledgeable, individualized instruction in a one-on-one interaction with a learner.
