Gender and Divorce Law in North Africa - Sharia, Custom and the Personal Status Code in Tunisia (Hardcover, New): Maaike... Gender and Divorce Law in North Africa - Sharia, Custom and the Personal Status Code in Tunisia (Hardcover, New)
Maaike Voorhoeve
R4,638 Discovery Miles 46 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Personal status laws remain a highly politicized area of debate in the Middle East, as the arena in which the contentious issues of women's rights, religion and minority groups meet. This is especially so when it comes to divorce. In Tunisia, with the moderate Islamist party Ennahda winning the first elections following the 2011 revolution, questions of religion in public life have gained greater primacy. The country is often hailed for its progressive personal status code, seen as an exception to the practice in many other Muslim countries. Polygamy is banned, for example, and in divorce cases there is gender equality. However, Tunisia's legal system contains many gaps and leaves much room for interpretation. Bearing in mind this importance of the role of Islam in judicial courts, Maaike Voorhoeve investigates whether the more progressive, and ostensibly secular, principles enshrined in Tunisia's Personal Status Code of 1956 are in fact adhered to in divorce cases. And if not, whether judges frequently turn to the Sharia, custom or societal norms as their primary sources of guidance. Through extensive research in the Tunisian courts, Voorhoeve investigates the different types of divorce, the arguments presented to the court and the consequent legal decisions made. She focuses on the role of female judges, testing the assumption that they adjudicate in a more gender-neutral way and examining the impact they have had on Tunisian legal culture and through this, Tunisian society. Gender and Divorce Law in North Africa therefore sheds light on the wide-reaching debate throughout North Africa and the Middle East concerning the role of Islam and Sharia in the public, political, legal and private spheres. This debate, which often pits secularists against Islamists, but is in reality much more nuanced, is key in a variety of fields, including Middle East studies and Islamic law.

Becoming 'Good Muslim' - The Tablighi Jamaat in the UK and Bangladesh (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Bulbul Siddiqi Becoming 'Good Muslim' - The Tablighi Jamaat in the UK and Bangladesh (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Bulbul Siddiqi
R3,290 Discovery Miles 32 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book uses an ethnographic approach to explore why the Tablighi Jamaat movement remains so successful in contemporary times. It shows that this success results from the positive image that it cultivates, and the systematic preaching activities of Tablighi Jamaat followers, and that the organisation's apolitical image, the public profile of the ijtema, the humbleness of Tablighi followers, and the attraction of belonging to the global Tablighi community all help to create a positive image of the Tablighi Jamaat among ordinary Muslims. The book also argues that the Tablighi Jamaat remains successful because of its ability to hold its followers within a Tablighi-guided life, which is perceived as protection against the Western lifestyle. Many elements of contemporary Western lifestyle are considered non-Islamic, and so by clearly defining what is Islamic and non-Islamic in modern society, the Tablighi Jamaat provides a way in which Muslims can live in the contemporary world, but remain good Muslims.

Islam and Assisted Reproductive Technologies - Sunni and Shia Perspectives (Paperback): Marcia C. Inhorn, Soraya Tremayne Islam and Assisted Reproductive Technologies - Sunni and Shia Perspectives (Paperback)
Marcia C. Inhorn, Soraya Tremayne

How and to what extent have Islamic legal scholars and Middle Eastern lawmakers, as well as Middle Eastern Muslim physicians and patients, grappled with the complex bioethical, legal, and social issues that are raised in the process of attempting to conceive life in the face of infertility? This path-breaking volume explores the influence of Islamic attitudes on Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) and reveals the variations in both the Islamic jurisprudence and the cultural responses to ARTs.

Women and Revivalism in the West - Choosing 'Fundamentalism' in a Liberal Democracy (Hardcover, New): M. Franks Women and Revivalism in the West - Choosing 'Fundamentalism' in a Liberal Democracy (Hardcover, New)
M. Franks
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Why do some Western women choose to join Christian and Islamic revivalist movements in the present day? Revivalist religions (often called fundamentalist) have a reputation for the policing of gender boundaries and roles and the blanket subjugation of women. This study aims particularly to establish what the attractions might be for women who choose to swim against the prevailing consumerist current and affiliate themselves with such groups in a liberal democracy.

Russian-American Relations - Islamic and Turkic Dimensions in the Volga-Ural Basin (Hardcover): H. Malik Russian-American Relations - Islamic and Turkic Dimensions in the Volga-Ural Basin (Hardcover)
H. Malik
R2,674 Discovery Miles 26 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a collective endeavour to highlight the role of Islam in the emerging pattern of relations between Russia and the United States. It highlights particularly the role that the two autonomous republics within the Russian Federation - Tatarstan and Bashkortostan - play in Eurasia. Some analysts have described them as the soft underbelly of the Russian Federation. Future trends are also indicated, which delineate the dilemmas of the Russian state for its territorial integrity and national self-determination of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan within the Russian Federation. This book also analyses Russian-US relations with Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. These states indeed play, according to these analyses, a crucial role in Eurasia, and also compete against each other.

Negotiating Cultures - Bilingual Surrender Treaties in Muslim-Crusader Spain Under the James the Conqueror (Hardcover): William... Negotiating Cultures - Bilingual Surrender Treaties in Muslim-Crusader Spain Under the James the Conqueror (Hardcover)
William C.G. Burns, Robert I. Burns; Contributions by Mikel De Epalza; Paul E. Chevedden
R5,642 Discovery Miles 56 420 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

James I "the Conqueror," king of Arago-Catalonia, conquered Mediterranean Spain from Islam during fifty crusading years (1225-1276). From his many surrender treaties, only two survive in their interlinear bilingual originals, both presented here. Each reflects the fragmentation of post-Almohad Islam, the warrior heroes of Islam carving recalcitrant principalities out of the confusion, the hard-fought local negotiations and the confrontation between two radically opposed mentalities.
The full meaning of these battered and deteriorated bits of parchment emerges only from minute reconstruction of the Arabic and Latinate texts and especially from ever-widening circles of changing contexts in each world, an historical kaleidoscope.
Many surprises here await students of medieval Europe, the Islamic West, Spain, the Crusades, diplomacy, Mudejars/Moriscos, and cultural conflict and interchange.

Orthodoxy and Islam in the Middle East - The Seventh to the Sixteenth Centuries (Paperback): Constantin A. Panchenko, Brittany... Orthodoxy and Islam in the Middle East - The Seventh to the Sixteenth Centuries (Paperback)
Constantin A. Panchenko, Brittany Pheiffer Noble, Samuel Noble
R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Conflict or concord? Histories of Islam from its early seventh century beginnings in Arabia often portray its explosive growth into the wider Middle East as a story of struggle and conquest of the Christian people of Greater Syria, Palestine and Egypt. Alternatively these histories suggest that as often as not the conquerors were welcomed by the conquered and their existing monotheistic faiths of Christianity and Judaism tolerated and even allowed to flourish. In this short but in depth survey of the almost nine centuries that passed from the beginning of the spread of Islam up to the Ottoman Turkish conquest of Syria and Egypt beginning in 1516, Constantin Panchenko offers a more complex portrayal that opens up fresh vistas of understanding of these centuries focusing on the impact that the coming of Islam had on the Orthodox Christian communities of the Middle East and in particular the interplay of their Greek cultural heritage and experience of increasing Arabization. This work is drawn from the author's much larger work, Arab Orthodox Christians Under the Ottomans, being an updated and expanded version of the first chapter of that book which set the historical context for the period after 1516. It will deepen the readers understanding both of the history of the Middle East in these centuries and of how the faith of Orthodox Christians in these lands is lived today.

The Neoliberal Landscape and the Rise of Islamist Capital in Turkey (Hardcover): Nesecan Balkan, Erol Balkan, Ahmet Oencu The Neoliberal Landscape and the Rise of Islamist Capital in Turkey (Hardcover)
Nesecan Balkan, Erol Balkan, Ahmet Oencu
R2,849 Discovery Miles 28 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Islamist capital accumulation has split the Turkish bourgeoisie and polarized Turkish society into secular and religious social groupings, giving rise to conflicts between the state and political Islam. By providing a long-term historical perspective on Turkey's economy and its relationship to Islamism, this volume explores how Islamism as a political ideology has been utilized by the conservative bourgeoisie in Turkey, and elsewhere, to establish hegemony over labor. The contributors analyze the relationship between neoliberalism and the political fortunes of the Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP), and examine the similarities and differences amongst new factions in the secular and Islamic middle class that have benefited economically, socially, and culturally during the AKP's reign. The articles also investigate the impact of the Gulen Movement and the role of the media in shaping the contours of intra-class struggle within contemporary Turkish political and social life.

Visibly Muslim - Fashion, Politics, Faith (Hardcover): Emma Tarlo Visibly Muslim - Fashion, Politics, Faith (Hardcover)
Emma Tarlo
R4,326 Discovery Miles 43 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Muslims in Britain and cosmopolitan cities throughout the West are increasingly choosing to express their identity and faith through dress, whether by wearing colourful headscarves, austere black garments or creative new forms of Islamic fashion. Why is dress such an important issue for Muslims? Why is it such a major topic of media interest and international concern? This timely and important book cuts through media stereotypes of Muslim appearances, providing intimate insights into what clothes really mean to the people who design and wear them. It examines how different ideas of fashion, politics, faith, freedom, beauty, modesty and cultural diversity are articulated by young British Muslims as they seek out clothes which best express their identities, perspectives and concerns. It also explores the wider social and political effects of their clothing choices on the development of transnational cultural formations and multicultural urban spaces. Based on contemporary ethnographic research, the book is an essential read for students and scholars of religion, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology and fashion as well as anyone interested in cultural diversity and the changing face of cosmopolitan cities throughout the world.

The Global Muslim Brotherhood in Britain - Non-Violent Islamist Extremism and the Battle of Ideas (Hardcover): Damon Perry The Global Muslim Brotherhood in Britain - Non-Violent Islamist Extremism and the Battle of Ideas (Hardcover)
Damon Perry
R4,920 Discovery Miles 49 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since 2011, with the British Government's counter-radicalisation strategy, Prevent, non-violent Islamist groups have been considered a security risk for spreading a divisive ideology that can lead to radicalisation and violence. More recently, the Government has expressed concerns about their impact on social cohesion, entryism, and women's rights. The key protagonists of non-violent Islamist 'extremism' allegedly include groups and individuals associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and Jama'at-i-Islami. They have been described as part of the 'global Muslim Brotherhood', but do they constitute a singular phenomenon, a social movement? This book shows that such groups and individuals do indeed comprise a movement in Britain, one dedicated to an Islamic 'revival'. It shows how they are networked organisationally, bonded through ideological and cultural kinship, and united in a conflict of values with the British society and state. Using original interviews with prominent revivalist leaders, as well as primary sources, the book also shows how the movement is not so much 'Islamist' in aspiring for an Islamic state, but concerned with institutionalising an Islamic worldview and moral framework throughout society. The conflict between the Government and the global Muslim Brotherhood is apparent in a number of different fields, including education, governance, law, and counterterrorism. But this does not simply concern the direction of Government policy or the control of state institutions. It most fundamentally concerns the symbolic authority to legitimise a way of seeing, thinking and living. By assessing this multifaceted conflict, the book presents an exhaustive and up-to-date analysis of the political and cultural fault lines between Islamic revivalists and the British authorities. It will be useful for anyone studying Islam in the West, government counter-terrorism and counter-extremism policy, multiculturalism and social cohesion.

The Founding of Israeli Democracy, 1948-1967 (Hardcover, New): Peter Y. Medding The Founding of Israeli Democracy, 1948-1967 (Hardcover, New)
Peter Y. Medding
R4,478 Discovery Miles 44 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Israel is the only new state among the twenty-one countries in the world today that have maintained democracy without interruption since the end of the Second World War. Israel's case is all the more notable because its democracy was established under extremely adverse conditions: massive immigration; severe social dislocation; the introduction of ethnic, cultural, linguistic, religious, and national differences; rapid economic growth; a permanent security threat that led to five major wars in thirty-five years; and a population that, in the main, had little or no experience of a democratic order. In this insightful study of Israel's founding period from 1948 to 1967, Peter Medding addresses this puzzle, providing a lucid account of the political and historical conditions that gave rise to this distinctive period, as well as the changes which brought it to an end. The result is an eminently readable account of the state-building process and of the role played by David Ben-Gurion and other politicians in moving from consensus politics to a majoritarian-like democracy. Medding's analysis is further enriched by his comparisons of the development of Israeli democracy with that of other countries.

Education and Muslim Identity During a Time of Tension - Inside an American Islamic School (Hardcover): Melanie Brooks Education and Muslim Identity During a Time of Tension - Inside an American Islamic School (Hardcover)
Melanie Brooks
R4,481 Discovery Miles 44 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Education and Muslim Identity During a Time of Tension explores life inside an Islamic Center and school in present-day America. Melanie Brooks' work draws on in-depth discussions with community and school leaders, teachers, parents and students to present thoughtful and contemporary perspectives on many issues central to American-Muslim identities. Particularly poignant are the children's voices, as they discuss their developing identities and how they navigate the choice of being American, Muslim, or both. The book covers topics ranging from establishing the community and the considerations involved, the management of diversity within the community, and approaches to modern opinions on and experiences of gender and extremism in the western world. Based on focus groups, interviews and observations collected over a two-year period, this book serves as a fascinating and informative insight into the culture and experiences of modern American Muslims. This is essential reading for students and researchers interested in education, religion, politics, sociology, and most particularly in contemporary Islamic studies.

Studies in Indo-Muslim History by S.H. Hodivala Volume I - A Critical Commentary on Elliot and Dowson's History of India... Studies in Indo-Muslim History by S.H. Hodivala Volume I - A Critical Commentary on Elliot and Dowson's History of India as Told by Its Own Historians (Vols. I-IV) & Yule and Burnell's Hobson-Jobson (Hardcover)
Sanjay Garg
R4,561 Discovery Miles 45 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson's volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala's annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala's volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson's, and for Yule and Burnell's excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Vying for Allah's Vote - Understanding Islamic Parties, Political Violence, and Extremism in Pakistan (Paperback): Haroon... Vying for Allah's Vote - Understanding Islamic Parties, Political Violence, and Extremism in Pakistan (Paperback)
Haroon K. Ullah
R1,268 Discovery Miles 12 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is driving political extremism in Pakistan? In early 2011, the prominent Pakistani politician Salmaan Taseer was assassinated by a member of his own security team for insulting Islam by expressing views in support of the rights of women and religious minorities. Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister, was killed by gunfire and explosive devices as she left a campaign event in December 2007; strong evidence links members of extremist organizations to her slaying. These murders underscore the fact that religion, politics, and policy are inextricably linked in Pakistan. In this book, Haroon K. Ullah analyzes the origins, ideologies, bases of support, and electoral successes of the largest and most influential Islamic parties in Pakistan. Based on his extensive field work in Pakistan, he develops a new typology for understanding and comparing the discourses put forth by these parties in order to assess what drives them and what separates the moderate from the extreme. A better understanding of the range of parties is critical for knowing how the US and other Western nations can engage states where Islamic political parties hold both political and moral authority. Pakistan's current democratic transition will hinge on how well Islamic parties contribute to civilian rule, shun violence, and mobilize support for political reform. Ullah's political-party typology may also shed light on the politics of other majority-Muslim democracies, such as Egypt and Tunisia, where Islamist political parties have recently won elections.

R1,422 Discovery Miles 14 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first book to examine the Arab Shi'a, a community whose identity and problematic relationship with the rest of the Middle East cuts to the heart of the crisis of Arab politics and society. The Shi'a represent a majority of the population along the Arab coast of the Persian Gulf and are the largest religious group in Lebanon. This book, based on extensive field interviews, examines the nature of Shi'ite belief and community life, contemporary political and social problems, key grievances, and the nature of their relationship with the dominant Sunni state today as they seek a major voice in a new political order.

K. Cayir
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The victory of the young religious politicians of the Justice and Development Party in 2002 and their new pro-European Union stance was proceded by the emergence of new Islamic intellectual, autobiographical, and literary accounts in the 90s. This book explores the changing understandings of Islam by focusing on the Islamist movement's production of literary fiction since the early 1980s. It contextualizes a close reading of exemplary novels within broader developments in Turkish society. The study sheds light on how the politics of gender, collective identity, idealism, and individual aspirations in a modern context are expressed, generated, and revised through literature.
