Egyptian Language (Routledge Revivals) - Easy Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphics (Hardcover): E.A. Budge Egyptian Language (Routledge Revivals) - Easy Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphics (Hardcover)
E.A. Budge
R4,297 Discovery Miles 42 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sir E. A. Wallis Budge (1857-1934) was Keeper of the British Museum's department of oriental antiquities from 1894 until his retirement in 1924. Carrying out many missions to Egypt in search of ancient objects, Budge was hugely successful in collecting papyri, statues and other artefacts for the trustees of the British Museum: numbering into the thousands and of great cultural and historical significance. Budge published well over 100 monographs, which shaped the development of future scholarship and are still of great academic value today, dealing with subjects such as Egyptian religion, history and literature. The ancient Egyptians expressed their ideas in writing by means of hieroglyphics, which they used uninterruptedly until the end of the rule of the Ptolemies. Evidence indicates that the hieroglyphic system of writing was brought to Egypt by invaders from north-east or central Asia; they settled somewhere between Memphis on the north and Thebes on the south, and gradually established their civilization, religion and methods of communication. First published in 1910, Egyptian Language provides a simple introduction to the study of Egyptian hieroglyphic inscriptions. Including an account of the decipherment of the hieroglyphic system and the general principles which underlie it, as well as the main facts of ancient Egyptian grammar and illustrative extracts, the book will be of value to students and academics of ancient Egyptian language and culture.

The new memoir from prize-winning writer and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo - playful, provocative and original, it's her deeply personal take on striving for a life of her own 'When it comes to spinning light and shadow on the complexities of living, loving and language, Xiaolu Guo is one of the most valuable writers in the world' DEBORAH LEVY The world can seem strange and lonely when you step away from your family and everything you have tried to call your own. Yet beauty may also appear. In the autumn of 2019 Xiaolu travelled to New York to take up her position as a visiting professor for a year, leaving her child and partner behind in London. The encounter with American culture and people threatens her sense of identity and throws her into a crisis - of meaning, desire, obligation and selfhood. This is a memoir about separation - by continents, by language, and from people. It's about being an outsider and the desperate longing to connect. Xiaolu uses her exploration of language (one of the meanings of the word 'radical' is the graphic component, or root, of Chinese characters), and her own life, to create this unique text. At once a memoir, a dictionary, and an ardent love letter, it is an expression of her fascination with Western culture and her nostalgia for Eastern landscapes, and an attempt to describe the space in between. An archive of an artist's search for creative freedom, it is above all else an intimate account of her efforts to carve out a life of her own. The Accurate Use of Chinese - Practical Sentence Structures and Word Usage for English Speakers (Paperback): Wen-Hua Teng The Accurate Use of Chinese - Practical Sentence Structures and Word Usage for English Speakers (Paperback)
Wen-Hua Teng
R1,162 Discovery Miles 11 620 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Accurate Use of Chinese: Practical Sentence Structures and Word Usage for English Speakers is a unique learning resource for learners of Chinese who are English speakers. The primary goal is twofold: to help these learners leverage their existent knowledge in English and navigate the Chinese system with fewer obstacles; and also to help them prevent errors of which the underlying cause may be English. This is done through comparisons of selected grammar topics, language rules and word usages between the two languages. Grammar topics in English serve as the comparison points from which learners can gain a deeper understanding of the comparable, but differing structures in Chinese. The book's comparative approach is unique and innovative, designed to build a more nuanced and instinctive approach to grammar. A valuable resource for beginners to advanced learners and instructors of Chinese, the book contextualizes grammar structures and provides in-depth information not covered in Chinese language textbooks.

R5,677 Discovery Miles 56 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modern German Grammar: A Practical Guide, Third Edition is an innovative reference guide to German, combining traditional and function-based grammar in a single volume.

The Grammar is divided into two parts. Part A covers grammatical categories such as word order, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Part B is organised according to language functions and notions such as:

  • making introductions
  • asking for something to be done
  • delivering a speech
  • possibility
  • satisfaction.

The book addresses learners practical needs and presents grammar in both a traditional and a communicative setting. New to this edition, and building on feedback from the previous edition:

  • The rules of the latest (and so far final) spelling reform have been implemented throughout.
  • Examples of usage have been updated and consideration given to Swiss and Austrian variants.
  • The chapter on register has been expanded and now includes youth language and frequently used Anglicisms in German.
  • The Index now has even more key words; it has also been redesigned to differentiate between German words, grammar terms, and functions, thus making it more user-friendly.

The Grammar assumes no previous grammatical training and is intended for all those who have a basic knowledge of German, from intermediate learners in schools and adult education to undergraduates taking German as a major or minor part of their studies.

The Grammar is accompanied by a third edition of Modern German Grammar Workbook (ISBN 978-0-415-56725-1) which features exercises and activities directly linked to the Grammar.

Ruth Whittle is Lecturer, John Klapper is Professor of Foreign Language Pedagogy, Katharina Gl ckel is the Austrian Lektorin and Bill Dodd is Professor of Modern German Studies all at the University of Birmingham. Christine Eckhard-Black is Tutor and Advisor in German at the Oxford University Language Centre.

R1,090 Discovery Miles 10 900 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book is one of the few textbooks designed to teach advanced Chinese language and culture through film. The themes of the films cover a wide range of Chinese social and cultural issues, like family values, youth culture, love , Chinese parenting styles, challenges faced by migrant workers, etc. Accordingly, students can learn and experience contemporary Chinese society and culture through watching and discussing these films. Teacher-friendly: a wealth of discussion points, including not only pre-class preparation questions, but also in-depth questions for teachers to conduct in-class discussion. These topics provide teachers with a wealth of ideas for classroom teaching, which greatly reduces the teacher's lesson preparation work. The English Language Teacher in Global Civil Society (Paperback): Barbara M Birch The English Language Teacher in Global Civil Society (Paperback)
Barbara M Birch
R1,053 Discovery Miles 10 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How can English language teachers contribute to peace locally and globally?

English language teachers and learners are located in the global civil society an international network of civil organizations and NGOs related to human rights, the environment, and sustainable peace. English, with its special role as an international language, is a major tool for communication within this network.

On the local level, many teachers are interested in promoting reconciliation and sustainable peace, but often do not know how to do so. This book provides information, analysis, and techniques to help teachers around the world take action toward this goal. Balancing, in a readable and accessible way, the global and the local, core and periphery, cultural diffusion and resistance, theory and practice, pessimism and optimism, outsider and insider perspectives, the expert role and the apprentice role, and prescriptive and elicitive methods, it offers an alternative to literature about critical applied linguistics, globalization, and peace education that is simply too complex and wordy to spread easily from theoretician to the classroom teacher.

The English Teacher in Global Civil Society

  • synthesizes threads from many fields and topics into a coherent and empowering argument for the activist role English language teachers can take to promote social change
  • draws on humanistic education, peace education, cross-cultural understanding, problem-posing, cooperative learning, and critical thinking methodologies to help English language teachers learn how to teach conflict resolution skills in their classrooms
  • covers issues in critical applied linguistics, approaches and methodologies in ESL/EFL, global and local curricular issues, and specific skill areas such reading, writing, and speaking
  • suggests a new goal for English language teachers: global citizenship.

This engaging, informative, provocative, and highly readable book is a welcome resource for English language teacher trainers, pre-service teachers, practicing classroom teachers, and Peace Corps workers around the world.
