This textbook discusses elements of craft common to all creative writing before delving into the individual genres. After an introduction, the next five chapters each investigate a specific element of craft-Image, Voice, Character, Setting, and Story-from a perspective that crosses all genres. Nearly half of the selections in all four genres are new. New "Try This" exercises give students plenty of practice. Imaginative Writing is a very popular book for courses on teaching the craft of creative writing.

The desire to create, to write, to fulfil our artistic dreams is a powerful human need. Yet the number of people who make a living solely by their pen is actually quite small. What does that mean for the rest of us, the self-described writing geeks, who are passionate about writing and who still want to sustain successful literary lives? What does it really mean to find time to build a rewarding writing life while pursuing a career, being a partner or raising a family, in the distracted, time-deprived, 21st-century? In The Geek's Guide to the Writing Life, based on her Huffington Post blog of the same name, Stephanie Vanderslice shares the secrets and tools to developing a successful, rewarding writing practice in a way that inspires the reader to persevere through the inevitable lows and even the highs of a literary life, so that anyone can pursue the path to realizing their artistic dreams.

Concise Encyclopedia of the Original Literature of Esperanto is a unique work of international reference, with over 300 individual articles on the most important authors. Its introductory articles to the literature and to each of its periods also tell the fascinating story of the development of the literature from its humble beginnings in 1887 to its worldwide use in every literary genre today. --- The planned, neutral international language Esperanto is used across the world as a second language by people who wish to practice mutual respect for other cultures, not merely advocate it. --- Original Esperanto literature - creative writing directly in Esperanto by, at least, bilingual speakers - is the work of authors from many countries, who have chosen to write in it because of its merits. It is, as yet, always a labour of love, that is to say a product of culture. It is also most fundamentally democratic - a product of people - as opposed to capital, power or national prestige. Esperanto culture is rooted in the fundamental values of humanity, equality and mutual respect, multilingualism, language rights, and cultural diversity and emancipation.

Friendship and Devotion, or Three Months in Louisiana (Hardcover): Camille Lebrun, E. Joe Johnson, Robin Anita White Friendship and Devotion, or Three Months in Louisiana (Hardcover)
Camille Lebrun, E. Joe Johnson, Robin Anita White
R2,908 Discovery Miles 29 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Parisian Pauline Guyot (1805-1886), who wrote under the nom de plume Camille Lebrun, published many novels, translations, collections of tales, and articles in French magazines of her day. Yet she has largely been forgotten by contemporary literary critics and readers. Among her works is a hitherto-untranslated 1845 French novel, Amitie et devouement, ou Trois mois a la Louisiane, or Friendship and Devotion, or Three Months in Louisiana, a moralizing, educational travelogue meant for a young adult readership of the time. Lebrun's novel is one of the few perspectives we have by a mid-nineteenth-century French woman writer on the matters of slavery, abolition, race relations, and white supremacy in France's former Louisiana colony. E. Joe Johnson and Robin Anita White have recovered this work, providing a translation, an accessible introduction, extensive endnote annotations, and period illustrations. After a short preface meant to educate young readers about the geography, culture, and history of the southern reaches of the Louisiana Purchase, the novel tells the tale of two teenaged, orphaned Americans, Hortense Melvil and Valentine Arnold. The two young women, who characterize one another as "sisters," have spent the majority of their lives in a Parisian boarding school and return to Louisiana to begin their adult lives. Almost immediately upon arrival in New Orleans, their close friendship faces existential threats: grave illness in the form of yellow fever, the prospect of marriage separating the two, and powerful discrimination in the form of racial prejudice and segregation.

It is intended especially for students schools and colleges who are preparing to become secretaries and planning to fill positions of responsibility that require a broad education as well as a definite knowledge of the special skills necessary for success in their chosen work. A secretary must, of course, be able to write effective letters, correct in form and details and attractive in appearance. This book, therefore, provides explanations of many types of letters, business, semi business, official, and social all of which a secretary may be called upon to write for her employer. It also includes numerous models and exercises which obviate the need for a workbook. Since a basic requirement of good letter writing is a knowledge of such fundamentals as capitalization, punctuation, and grammar, rules for the use of these tools, with exercises and illustrations, are supplied so that students needing such aid may turn to these chapters for frequent drill and review. A secretary must also be proficient in spelling, pronunciation, and the accurate use of words. For this purpose a chapter is devoted to dictionary study for which copious exercises are provided. As the subject is limited to the secretarial field, instead of being extended in an attempt to cover the broader range of vi Preface business English, the author hopes that this book may prove especially valuable to students in secretarial courses and that it may furnish authority for disputed questions that often arise in business correspondence. The author wishes to acknowledge the courtesy of the fol lowing companies in permitting the useof material Sidney Edlund and Company for an article by Sidney and Mary Edlund Harper Brothers for a letter from Letters of jf. ames Russell Lowell D.
