This comprehensive reference guide reviews the literature
concerning the impact of the automobile on American social,
economic, and political history. Covering the complete history of
the automobile to date, twelve chapters of bibliographic essays
describe the important works in a series of related topics and
provide broad thematic contexts. This work includes general
histories of the automobile, the industry it spawned and
labor-management relations, as well as biographies of famous
automotive personalities. Focusing on books concerned with various
social aspects, chapters discuss such issues as the car's influence
on family life, youth, women, the elderly, minorities, literature,
and leisure and recreation. Berger has also included works that
investigate the government's role in aiding and regulating the
automobile, with sections on roads and highways, safety, and
pollution. The guide concludes with an overview of reference works
and periodicals in the field and a description of selected research
collections.
"The Automobile in American History and Culture" provides a
resource with which to examine the entire field and its structure.
Popular culture scholars and enthusiasts involved in automotive
research will appreciate the extensive scope of this reference.
Cross-referenced throughout, it will serve as a valuable research
tool.
The ever-escalating cost of building or buying a hot rod is
leaving more and more would-be hot rodders behind. This book will
get those hopefuls off the sidelines by showing how a hot rod can
be built for less than the cost of, say, a new Hyundai.
Author Dennis Parks documents his own project--building a
quintessentially cool Model T roadster from a "Track-T"
kit--showing in step-by-step detail how to turn a pile of parts
into a rockin hot rod. He provides a detailed, easy-to-follow guide
for building a car of your own.
The advice and instructions cover every aspect of an affordable
hot rod build, from establishing the target vehicle and budget, to
finding parts, building the car, and fine tuning the finished
vehicle on the road.
With Parks' money-saving tips and photo-supported how-to
sequences, virtually anyone with minimal mechanical skills and the
will to use them can be sure of building their hot rod right, and
for the right price. The book also includes a full resource guide
and recommendations for further reading.
This family of fast, alluring and supremely elegant cars first
appeared in 1958 in the form of the 240bhp 140mph DB4. The response
from the motoring press and the motoring public was rapturous,
though the price of this handbuilt supercar was beyond the reach of
all but a favoured few. The coupe was soon joined by a 266bhp
Vantage version, by the 302bhp short-chassis DB4 GT(only 75
produced) and by a convertible. The DB4 GT Zagato, most powerful of
all at 314bhp, is also the rarest, only 19 examples being made. The
1964 replacement for the DB4 was the DB5, again offered as coupe or
convertible, with standard 282bhp engine or the 314bhp Vantage
unit, and the line concluded with the 1965-70 DB6, with cut-off
tail, better aerodynamics and in Vantage form having 325bhp. All
these cars remain as special and as exclusive as they ever were,
and they command correspondingly high prices based on three factors
a condition, history and most of all originality. Here James Taylor
gives full details of correct original specification and equipment
for all these cars, backed up by in-depth colour photography of
outstanding examples of all models and variants. Body panels,
external trim and badging, paint colours, interior trim, dashboard,
instruments and controls, under-bonnet components, engine and
transmission, lamps, and other features right down to the tool kit,
are all covered."

of the iconic car manufacturer. From the alluring curves to the
powerful engineering, Porsche has been synonymous with both luxury
and race car manufacturing for more than 90 years. In The Story of
Porsche, every component of the legendary brand's success is
studied and celebrated, from turbulent beginnings to its ascent to
the summit of car design and construction. Blending heritage with

some of the most beloved models of sport and luxury car alike. From
the timeless designs of the 911 and Carrera, to the dynamism of the
917, the fabled marque has instilled class and faultless
engineering into each and every one of its creations. With 19
victories at Le Mans, Porsche has also proved itself to be as
successful on the racetrack as it is on the streets; revered,
respected and treasured in equal measure. These victories on both
the podium and in the marketplace are rendered here in stunning
detail through insightful text and exceptional photography. This is
a story packed with blind corners and steep climbs, in a package
that will sit perfectly on any Porsche fan's bookshelf.
They don't make 'bad' cars any more, right? Well, maybe not, but
there have been some real clunkers in years gone by, and this is
the first book to celebrate them in all their awful glory. In this
new edition, Giles Chapman presents to you "The Worst Cars Ever
Sold," containing hundreds of rare pictures of these unreliable,
rusty, hideous-looking and just plain mad machines, and thousands
of fascinating and entertaining facts about them - some will
surprise you, others you'll be all too familiar with. This book
will take you back in time to when the family jalopy never failed
to let you down, or that banger you bought from the local paper
revealed its true character the moment you drove it - behold the
worst cars ever sold and enjoy!
This is a fictional biography of lives and loves during the last
part of the 20th and the first part of the 21st Centuries.
Automobiles enriched those lives, making possible love, travel and
high adventure. A physician and a skilled mechanic have
collaborated to describe what the automobiles, the people and the
times were like during that era of rapid change.
Researched and written in Japan, with the full co-operation of the
factory, here, in definitive detail, is the complete story of the
first generation of Mazda's MX-5 - the car that re-invented the
affordable lightweight roadster, a species that many thought was
extinct as the 1990s drew near. Immediately successful, the MX-5,
also known as the Miata or Eunos Roadster, spawned many imitators,
but remains the world's biggest selling sports car. The series has
now been in production for over 30 years, and new generations
continue to follow the concept of the original, much to the delight
of fans and enthusiasts all over the world.
In 1956, a prototype of a new passenger car from Volvo was
presented. It became known as the Amazon in Sweden and the 121 and
122S in export markets, the latter denoting a more sporty
derivative. However, despite its substantial appearance, all
Amazons were surprisingly fleet of foot - this was one of the most
sporty European saloons of the 1960s. With its elegant, timeless
styling the Amazon broke new ground for Volvo - and for passenger
cars as a whole. This new book covers the complete story of Volvo
Amazon, from 1956 onwards, including full production histories,
comprehensive specification details, and over 250 photographs. An
ideal resource for owners, or anybody with an interest in the
evolution of these classic cars.
This book tells the life story of the much-loved Triumph TR6 in
unprecedented detail, bringing to life the genesis and magnificent
history of one of the most-loved British sports cars of its era.
Covering the design, development and manufacture of the car as well
as its motorsport history, it shows how this last bastion of
traditional British sports car motoring went against the grain of
troubled automotive times, outstripping its predecessors in sales
and popularity.
Now in paperback! Researched and written in Japan with the full
co-operation of the factory, here in definitive detail is the story
of the Honda S2000 - a series of open two-seaters that built on the
success of the NSX, helping the company justify its on-track
exploits with a proper line of sporting machinery. Successful
immediately, the S2000 models defended Honda's honour on the
tracks, but it was in the showrooms where the S2000 excelled. After
a major face-lift, it was eventually killed off in 2009, but is as
popular today as it ever was as a modern classic for enthusiasts.
America's future depends on a vibrant highway system capable of
supporting industry and the travel needs of its citizens. The
country's highway system can trace its roots to the movements of
major armies in colonial times, such as British General Braddock
using George Washington's assistance in a disastrous attack of
French forces defending Ft. Duquesne. These early roads developed
into the engineering marvels of today's modern highway system. But
this system is in serious trouble. Inadequate funding and poor
management are responsible for its gradual deterioration, and along
with it, the U.S. economy. A broad range of solutions can solve
this problem, some of which involve transforming public
transportation agencies into privately operated utilities. Many of
these exciting solutions also offer the potential to solve
America's funding problems. This book is must-reading for anyone
concerned with America's future, as it shows us The Road Ahead...
