Reconstructing Organization - The Loungification of Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Damian P. O'Doherty Reconstructing Organization - The Loungification of Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Damian P. O'Doherty
R4,171 Discovery Miles 41 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This unique book breaks original ground in management and organization studies by drawing on over 21/2 years of ethnographic study in a major UK international airport group. Much has been written about the 'McDonaldisation' or 'Disneyization' of society, but few have been attentive to what the author terms 'Loungification of society'. A minor mode of organization, but one whose effects are likely to become ever more profound, this study shows how management and organization is itself being reconstructed and reshaped by way of loungification. Drawing on critical management studies, actor-network theory, and debates in contemporary anthropology around the so-called ontological turn, Reconstructing Organization enacts a veritable experiment in business and management studies. Who are these coming loungers? What do they want? Can we manage them? Or will they soon capture us with their talking chairs and 'crinicultural' politics?

Biz Jets - Technology and Market Structure in the Corporate Jet Aircraft Industry (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): Almarin Phillips, A.... Biz Jets - Technology and Market Structure in the Corporate Jet Aircraft Industry (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
Almarin Phillips, A. Paul Phillips, Thomas R. Phillips
R4,531 Discovery Miles 45 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Biz Jets: Technology and Market Structure in the Corporate Jet Aircraft Industry traces the development of business jet aircraft from the mid-1950s through early 1993. It begins with a discussion of the technological and market opportunities existing in the period prior to the introduction of the Lockheed JetStar and the North American Sabreliner. The subsequent appearances of other biz jets -- the Learjets, HS-125s, Jet Commanders, Falcons, Gulfstreams, Citations, Challengers, Mitsubishis and derivative aircraft are treated in considerable detail. Biz Jets also covers 'planes involved in many unsuccessful attempts to enter the industry from 1955 through 1993. The study shows that while the industry has been quite concentrated throughout its history, the positions of the leading firms have always been contestable. Indeed, leaders at one point in time have often been displaced by others who succeeded in marshalling technological and market opportunities to their advantage. Manufacturers have had to undertake continuous efforts to improve the price-performance characteristics of their aircraft to gain and hold their market shares. Rivalries in the effective use of the stream of new technologies have brought forth new aircraft with both better performance and lower operating costs. At the same time, however, participation in the market has been extremely risky. Only a few companies have been able to earn profits. Entries, exits and mergers have altered the structure of the industry, but it remained decidedly unstable at least through 1992.

Organizational Innovation by Integrating Simplification - Learning from Buurtzorg Nederland (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Sharda S.... Organizational Innovation by Integrating Simplification - Learning from Buurtzorg Nederland (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Sharda S. Nandram
R1,731 R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Save R488 (28%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents the theory of integrating implification and it provides a profound evidence based study of Buurtzorg Nederland. The case itself, forming the building block of the theory, has received tremendous interest in the Netherlands and abroad. This is the first international book on Buurtzorg Nederland and the first one departing from a management multidisciplinary perspective. The book demonstrates theory building by using the Grounded Theory Methodology as a way to contribute to management theory. Integrating simplification gives room for context specific implementation of organizational innovation to different industries.

Reinventing Organizations (Hardcover): Frederic Laloux Reinventing Organizations (Hardcover)
Frederic Laloux
R872 Discovery Miles 8 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The way we manage organizations seems increasingly out of date. Survey after survey shows that a majority of employees feel disengaged from their companies. The epidemic of organizational disillusionment goes way beyond Corporate America-teachers, doctors, and nurses are leaving their professions in record numbers because the way we run schools and hospitals kills their vocation. Government agencies and nonprofits have a noble purpose, but working for these entities often feels soulless and lifeless just the same. All these organizations suffer from power games played at the top and powerlessness at lower levels, from infighting and bureaucracy, from endless meetings and a seemingly never-ending succession of change and cost-cutting programs. Deep inside, we long for soulful workplaces, for authenticity, community, passion, and purpose. The solution, according to many progressive scholars, lies with more enlightened management. But reality shows that this is not enough. In most cases, the system beats the individual-when managers or leaders go through an inner transformation, they end up leaving their organizations because they no longer feel like putting up with a place that is inhospitable to the deeper longings of their soul. We need more enlightened leaders, but we need something more: enlightened organizational structures and practices. But is there even such a thing? Can we conceive of enlightened organizations? In this groundbreaking book, the author shows that every time humanity has shifted to a new stage of consciousness in the past, it has invented a whole new way to structure and run organizations, each time bringing extraordinary breakthroughs in collaboration. A new shift in consciousness is currently underway. Could it help us invent a radically more soulful and purposeful way to run our businesses and nonprofits, schools and hospitals? The pioneering organizations researched for this book have already "cracked the code." Their founders have fundamentally questioned every aspect of management and have come up with entirely new organizational methods. Even though they operate in very different industries and geographies and did not know of each other's experiments, the structures and practices they have developed are remarkably similar. It's hard not to get excited about this finding: a new organizational model seems to be emerging, and it promises a soulful revolution in the workplace. Reinventing Organizations describes in practical detail how organizations large and small can operate in this new paradigm. Leaders, founders, coaches, and consultants will find this work a joyful handbook, full of insights, examples, and inspiring stories.

Sexualities, Work and Organizations (Paperback): James Ward Sexualities, Work and Organizations (Paperback)
James Ward
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sexuality is arguably the most under-researched of all diversity areas in work organizations. This book brings together and relates stories of minority sexual identity from six organizations drawn from three different industry sectors: the Emergency Services, the Civil Service and the Banking sector. Here sexual minorities freely recount stories of their own workplace experiences. Three main themes emerge from the data: silence, disclosure and response. Issues of voice and silence are particularly pertinent for those who are not part of the dominant heterosexual discourse; issues of disclosure are highly important for sexual minorities for whom coming out is a major defining moment; and, highly unusually, in this book readers get an insight into how people respond to sexual minorities, as other employees' reactions to stories are related too. This book makes a significant contribution to our understanding discursive construction of identity in the workplace, as experienced by sexual minorities and provides a snapshot of minority working lives at the beginning of the 21st century. This is an extremely well written, highly innovative, timely and engaging book which as well as human resources management, it will also be of interest to scholars in other areas such as sociology and general business and management.

Trust in Knowledge Management and Systems in Organizations (Hardcover, New): Trust in Knowledge Management and Systems in Organizations (Hardcover, New)
R2,277 Discovery Miles 22 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trust in Knowledge Management and Systems in Organizations aims at tying trust to knowledge management (KM). It highlights the complexity of the invisible phenomenon of trust challenged by the global economy. Fresh insights, novel theoretical frameworks, and empirical results and ideas for future research are presented that differ from those since the 1950s. The eleven chapters (whose authors represent information studies, economics, administrative scientists, mass communications, computer science and cognitive science) explore the multidisciplinary nature of the concepts of trust and KM. The concept of trust is analyzed by presenting its extensive description in relation to knowledge and information-intensive activities and systems for understanding the dynamics of knowledge-based production at the levels of individuals, information systems, organizations, networks and society. Systems are considered from the social or the socio-technological perspective.

Sexual Orientation and Transgender Issues in Organizations - Global Perspectives on LGBT Workforce Diversity (Hardcover, 1st... Sexual Orientation and Transgender Issues in Organizations - Global Perspectives on LGBT Workforce Diversity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Thomas Koellen
R8,200 Discovery Miles 82 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last decade workforce diversity has attracted much scientific attention. Given the shortage of literature on issues related to homosexual, bisexual and transgender employees, compared to other facets of workforce diversity, this book opens up new perspectives on this issue. Emphasis is placed on the equal consideration of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues. Thus the predominance of lesbian and gay issues in LGBT research (and practice), will be contrasted by an explicit consideration of the unique experiences, stressors and related needs of bisexual and transgender employees. Contributions provide deeper insights into the differing experiences the whole spectrum of LGBT employees make in the workplace in different national and occupational contexts. Furthermore, the collection offers contextualized insights for evaluating and conceptualizing organizational initiatives aiming at a higher level of inclusion for LGBT employees.

Government's Role in Innovation (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): Dennis Patrick Leyden, Albert N Link Government's Role in Innovation (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
Dennis Patrick Leyden, Albert N Link
R4,447 Discovery Miles 44 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Inadequate investment in innovation is particularly costly in today's globally competitive environment where continued technological advancements are critical to sustaining economic prosperity. The government has a critical role in ensuring that society's general interest in innovation, and the public good associated with innovation, is represented in private-sector decision making. This can be accomplished through a variety of programs and initiatives that reward innovation at all levels. The various activities that make this possible fall into two general categories: (1) the creation and maintenance of a legal environment that encourages private sector investment in innovation (patents and the relaxation of antitrust); and (2) the provision of incentives to overcome the natural inclination of private parties to consider only their private benefits when choosing the level of innovation in which to invest (governmental grants and contracts to targeted tax incentives). The role of government, more specifically, can be found in three key areas: (1) funding of research and development performed in the private sector; (2) funding of Federal laboratory research activities and the effective transfer of that knowledge to the private sector; and (3) encouraging the industry-university collaboration in research and development. It is these three areas of research that generate technologies fundamental to increasing the rate of technological development in the private sector, and it is these areas that are the focus of this book.

Making Sense of Expertise - Cases from Law, Medicine, Journalism, Covid-19, and Climate Change (Paperback): Reiner Grundmann Making Sense of Expertise - Cases from Law, Medicine, Journalism, Covid-19, and Climate Change (Paperback)
Reiner Grundmann
R1,070 Discovery Miles 10 700 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Current debates about experts are often polarized and based on mistaken assumptions, with expertise either defended or denigrated. Making Sense of Expertise instead proposes a conceptual framework for the study of expertise in order to facilitate a more nuanced understanding of the role of expertise in contemporary society. Too often different meanings of experts and expertise are implied without making them explicit. Grundmann's approach to expertise is based on a synthesis of approaches that exist in various fields of knowledge. The book aims at dispelling much of the confusion by offering a comprehensive and rigorous framework for the study of expertise. A series of in-depth case studies drawn from contemporary issues, including the climate crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, provide the empirical basis of the author's comprehensive approach. This thought-provoking book will be of great interests to students, instructors and researchers in a range of fields in the humanities, social sciences, and science and technology studies.

O Thyssen
R2,930 Discovery Miles 29 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Progress in Intercalation Research (Hardcover, 3rd rev. ed. 1993): H.W.De Jong Progress in Intercalation Research (Hardcover, 3rd rev. ed. 1993)
H.W.De Jong
R4,566 Discovery Miles 45 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If a book needs a third edition, because the previous ones are sold out, one may well question whether an introduction is necessary. However, the Structure of European Industry was meant to be a flexible book, keeping it in tune with actual developments in the European Community. Some explanation is therefore required. Two new chapters on the services industry have been included, to recognize the growing importance of what is fundamentally a bundle of industries. It is also increasingly acknowledged, that the motorcar industry, for its efficiency and innovativeness, is very much dependent on the numerous suppliers, large and small, of the component parts industry. A chapter, reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of the European car supplying industries is therefore most welcome. Finally, European competition policy, now fitted out with the Merger Control Regulation is moving more and more towards the centre of stage and the final chapter presents a survey of the ~ims and achievements of this type of policy, up till now steadfastly developed by the EC Commission. For the rest, the chapters which were already in the previous edition, have been updated and have partly been rewritten by the authors concerned. The editor is most grateful to old and new contributors for their efforts to jointly produce a book which, after 12 years, is still unique in providing a European, instead of a national focus on industries and markets.

The Dinosaur in the Living Room - Achieving Positive Change by Tackling the Obvious (Hardcover): Harlow B. Cohen The Dinosaur in the Living Room - Achieving Positive Change by Tackling the Obvious (Hardcover)
Harlow B. Cohen
R707 Discovery Miles 7 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What if it were possible to avert needless declines in performance and to divert the energy toward positive change? What if it were possible to reverse declining performance by achieving significant gains of 25, 50, 100 per cent or more in a matter of months? What if such gains were attained, not by adding new technology, allocating more capital or launching yet another change program, but by tackling obvious opportunities using existing resources? What if the improvements could be achieved faster by replacing conventional methods with new practices that work better and are less labor intensive? Such opportunities do exist, are readily available and proven. The Dinosaur in the Living Room answers many of the What if questions posed above; and provides clear-cut strategies for achieving positive change and results.

Perspectives on Consumer Choice - From Behavior to Action, from Action to Agency (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Gordon R. Foxall Perspectives on Consumer Choice - From Behavior to Action, from Action to Agency (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Gordon R. Foxall

Evaluating the ways in which we construe consumer choice, this book examines the psychology, methods and realities of the role it plays for today's consumer. Confronted by competing brands and products, services, and e-tailed opportunities that are but a click away, how does the consumer choose among them to achieve the particular array of goods to suit their lifestyle? Consumer researchers often seek to explain consumer choice by attributing it to beliefs, desires, attitudes, and intentions in the absence of any theoretical justification. Perspectives on Consumer Choice is the outcome of a research program that employs cognitive explanations in a responsible and disciplined way to genuinely elucidate consumer choice in social scientific terms. Employing a reasoned approach to understanding consumption, this book builds upon theoretical and empirical research in economic psychology, behavioral economics and philosophy as well as marketing and consumer research.

From Regulation to Competition: New frontiers in electricity markets (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): Michael A. Einhorn From Regulation to Competition: New frontiers in electricity markets (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
Michael A. Einhorn
R3,102 Discovery Miles 31 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Electric utilities throughout the world continue to face new challenges involving ownership, market structure, and regulation. There are three related issues at hand. First, should ownership be private or public? Second, what operations should be integrated and where is competition feasible? Third, where is regulation necessary and can it be made more efficient? This volume bears directly upon these concerns. The book contains two sections. The first six articles discuss the British electricity experiment that has privatized and disintegrated the nation's generation, transmission, and distribution companies, introduced market competition for power purchases, and implemented incentive regulation for monopolized transmission and distribution grids. The remaining articles focus on the theater in which significant microeconomic issues will continue to emerge, most immediately in the U.K. and U.S.A. -- the coordination and pricing of transmission.

R4,142 Discovery Miles 41 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores how social media and its advances enables citizens to empower themselves during a crisis. The book addresses the key issues related to crises management and social media as the new platform to assist citizens and first responders dealing with multiple forms of crisis, from major terrorist attacks, larger scale public disorder, large-scale movement of people across borders, and natural disasters. The book is based on the results and knowledge gained during the European Commission ATHENA project which has been addressing critical issues in contemporary crisis management and social media and smart mobile communications. This book is authored by a mix of global contributors from across the landscape of academia, emergency response and experts in government policy and private industry. This title explores and explains that during a modern crisis, the public self-organizes into voluntary groups, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, emerge as leaders and experts and perform life-saving actions; and that they are increasingly reliant upon the use of new communications media to do it.

Creativities - The What, How, Where, Who and Why of the Creative Process (Paperback): Chris Bilton, Stephen Cummings, D T... Creativities - The What, How, Where, Who and Why of the Creative Process (Paperback)
Chris Bilton, Stephen Cummings, D T Ogilvie
R804 Discovery Miles 8 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is creativity and how can we best nurture creativity in different contexts? Drawing on a wide range of cases from the arts, business, design, media and sports, Creativities encourages readers to discover, mix and adapt their own version of creativity, rather than attempting to imitate or follow 'best practice'. International in scope, examples and cases extend beyond the typical Western 'creative genius' model, illuminating the great extent and diversity of global creativities. The book is designed around five key questions that address the what, how, where, who and why of the creative process, employing frameworks, questions and illustrative 'recipes' designed to inspire out-of-the-box creative thinking. The authors argue that to develop their own creativities, readers should experiment with different ingredients and find their own bisociative balance. With its rich array of cases, frameworks and visual material, Creativities will help educators design and lead classes on creativity, innovation and creative entrepreneurship. Its accessible content will also appeal to and inspire students and practitioners in business leadership, organisational innovation and critical management studies.
