The Economics of Energy Security (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Douglas R. Bohi, Michael A. Toman The Economics of Energy Security (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Douglas R. Bohi, Michael A. Toman
R2,965 Discovery Miles 29 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

his volume brings together and expands on research on the subject of energy T security externalities that we have conducted over a twenty-year period. We were motivated to bring this work together by the lack of a comprehensive analysis of the issues involved that was conveniently located in a single document, by the desire to focus that disparate body of research on the assessment of energy security externalities for policy purposes, and by the continuing concern of researchers and policymakers regarding the issues involved. Many misconceptions about energy security continue to persist in spite of a large body of research to the contrary, and we hope that this volume will help to dispel them. Most of our original research was funded by either the U.S. Department of Energy or Resources for the Future (RFF), and all of it was conducted while we served as staff members of RFF. To these institutions, and to the many individuals who commented on our original work, we wish to express our sincere gratitude. We also wish to express our appreciation to our colleague Margaret Walls for her sub stantial contribution to Chapter 7 on transportation policy."

Entrepreneurship and Innovation During Austerity - Surviving Beyond the Great Recession (Hardcover, New): I Chaston Entrepreneurship and Innovation During Austerity - Surviving Beyond the Great Recession (Hardcover, New)
I Chaston
R2,390 R1,972 Discovery Miles 19 720 Save R418 (17%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The banking and eurozone crises have triggered a new age of austerity during which customers will radically alter their buying behaviour. Many existing management theories are becoming inapplicable during the longest economic downturn since World War II. The last time the world faced such severe austerity was during the 1930s Great Depression. At that time the Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter concluded that organizational survival demands exploitation of entrepreneurship and innovation. During the current economic downturn Western firms are facing increasingly intensive price competition from countries such as China. This volume uses research and real world case materials to prove that the future survival of Western organizations, through and beyond the current Great Recession, is dependent upon fully understanding the nature of current market change as a result of economic austerity and to exploit entrepreneurship, innovation and new technology in order to develop superior products and create new markets.

Systemic Management for Intelligent Organizations - Concepts, Models-Based Approaches and Applications (Hardcover, 2012 ed.):... Systemic Management for Intelligent Organizations - Concepts, Models-Based Approaches and Applications (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Stefan N. Groesser, Rene Zeier
R3,125 Discovery Miles 31 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The last two decades increasingly have challenged the field of management by confronting it with rapidly growing levels of dynamism, inter-connectedness, and complexity. Systems-based management approaches, their promise already proven, offer great potentials for influencing and coping with this development. This collection of essays offers ideas and exemplary case studies from experts in systemic management, organiza-tional cybernetics, and system dynamics for meeting the challenges in so-cio-economic systems. This book was compiled to honor the academic achievement of Markus Schwaninger, a leading protagonist in developing the field of systemic management and organizational cybernetics. His stature in the field is demonstrated in the forewords by Raul Espejo and John Sterman. The efforts of 18 researchers and practitioners, all closely related to Markus Schwaninger, offer conceptual and empirical approaches that will allow managers and advanced students of the management profession to analyze, understand, and design intelligent organizations. The book weaves its content from both theory and practice and offers hints for improving a variety of organizations, both private and public, profit and non-profit, and large and small.

Amelia Manuti, Pasquale Davide De Palma
R1,612 Discovery Miles 16 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Social Organization sheds light on how social media usage is transforming the way organizations make sense of their identity and processes. By adopting a human capital perspective and merging research from communication studies and management, it argues that social media could be fruitfully exploited by organizations as a competitive advantage.

Markets, Pricing, and Deregulation of Utilities (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Michael A. Crew, Joseph C. Schuh Markets, Pricing, and Deregulation of Utilities (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Michael A. Crew, Joseph C. Schuh
R3,008 Discovery Miles 30 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Markets, Pricing, and Deregulation of Utilities examines the effects of deregulation on the energy and telecommunications industries in an economic environment that has changed dramatically since deregulation was first introduced in those industries several years ago. The contributors to this book discuss the aspects of deregulation that appear to be succeeding and those that seem to be failing. Within that framework, they offer insight as to the possible next stages of regulatory restructuring and reform. The contents of this book provide a strong theoretical base leading to a better understanding of markets, pricing, and deregulation by utility managers, regulators, and economists.

Telecommunications Demand in Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): L. D. Taylor Telecommunications Demand in Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
L. D. Taylor
R5,824 Discovery Miles 58 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Telecommunications Demand in Theory and Practice, which builds upon the author's seminal 1980 book, Telecommunications Demand: A Review and Critique, provides comprehensive analyses of the determinants and structure of telecommunications demands in the United States and Canada. Theory and empirical application receive equal emphasis with a heavy focus on the developments and econometric research since the divestiture of AT&T in 1984. For the first time, a detailed theoretical analysis of business telecommunications demand on subscriber and usage consumption externalities is presented. Telecommunications Demand in Theory and Practice is without peer in the documentation and analysis of price elasticities of demand for telecommunications services. This new book also includes a comprehensive bibliography with over 500 entries related to telecommunications demand and pricing. Telecommunications Demand will appeal to both academic and consulting economists, telecommunications industry analysts and regulators, and to teachers of courses in applied econometrics and regulated industries.

Regulation and Macroeconomic Performance (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Brian L Goff Regulation and Macroeconomic Performance (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Brian L Goff
R2,965 Discovery Miles 29 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This project grew out of a recognition that I could fmd no aggregate measure of the amount of regulation beyond crude proxies such as the number of pages in the Federal Register. As I began to address this specific issue. I became much more aware of two things -- the enormity of regulation in the u.s. economy and the relative absence of economic research into the macroeconomic consequences of those regulations. While I would have readily granted the idea that many economist'> knew more about regulation than I did, I would have thought my knowledge of regulation to be at least up to the average economist's. My graduate training in the early to mid 1980s included special attention to the field of "public choice" and related topics, all of which occasionally explored regulatory topics. Moreover. I had at least a passing knowledge of the debates concerning deregulation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Because of this, my own ignorance of regulation's actual expanse and its aggregate consequences startled me and heightened my interest in expanding empirical research into regulation as a macroeconomic influence. The more I thought about graduate macroeconomics classes and texts, the more that I realized the exclusion of regulation as a macroeconomic topic in spite of its massive scale and far-reaching tentacles.

Redesigning the Work of Human Services (Hardcover): John O'Looney Redesigning the Work of Human Services (Hardcover)
John O'Looney
R2,805 Discovery Miles 28 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Redesigning the Work of Human Services" explores alternative organizational designs for the delivery of human services--designs that emphasize collaborative governance and partnerships among public and private agencies, local control and responsibility for results, and the use of innovative information, planning, and community capacity-building technologies. This book redefines the debate about whether human services should be privatized or not. The author suggests that the basic task of human services--to enable families to socialize the young--is one that can neither be fulfilled effectively by the state nor by private agencies. Rather, carefully crafted public-private partnerships, when combined with new accountability mechanisms and the sophisticated use of emerging information technologies, are likely to offer more in the way of effective, efficient, and appropriate human services. Because this work is solidly grounded in the literature on both human and business services, the author's suggestions for major redesign are comprehensive and intelligently qualified.

Qualitative Organizational Research - Best Papers from the Davis Conference on Qualitative Research (Hardcover, New): Kimberly... Qualitative Organizational Research - Best Papers from the Davis Conference on Qualitative Research (Hardcover, New)
Kimberly D. Elsbach
R3,043 Discovery Miles 30 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past five years the Davis Conference on Qualitative Research has welcomed research projects by the very best qualitative, organizational researchers in the world. This conference has helped authors develop and hone theoretical ideas in an environment friendly to qualitative methods, and more importantly, has begun to build a community of qualitative researchers that work on organizational and management issues. The authors winning the ""Best Presentation Awards"" at the Davis Conference over the past five years have contributed chapters to this volume. The ideas in these chapters were ""born"" before the conference, but were nurtured through dialogue at the conference, and subsequently matured through later interactions among the community of qualitative scholars associated with the conference. As such, this volume represents the fruits of our collective labor as a qualitative research community. This collective and iterative process is a hallmark of qualitative methods, and often leads to a counter-intuitive, ""ah-hah"" experience for the researcher. This volume showcases some of the very best of those ah-hah experiences from the organizational, qualitative research community.

Ida Regalia
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Exploring the diversity of small firms, this contributed volume focuses on the crucial topic of work and the ways in which it is regulated, and offers reflections on the future of labour more generally. Traditionally managed through informal and adaptive processes, small firms allow us to understand the challenges and opportunities facing larger companies within an increasingly fragmented global production system. Analysing the case of Italy, a country characterised by a high number and wide variety of small firms, the authors draw on the results of a survey involving over 2,300 firms and face-to-face interviews with owner-managers working in 60 small and micro firms across several different sectors. Providing detailed analysis which will be useful for scholars of human resource management and small business, as well as managers, practitioners and policy-makers, the book enables a better understanding of the world of work in a globalised economy.

Bruce E. Winston
R2,860 Discovery Miles 28 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book begins with the scriptural support for person-organization fit and person-job fit. The book then examines scriptural support for the four-Cs of people's work-fit: Calling, Competence, Confidence, and Character. Finally, the book uses Acts 6:1-7 as a basis for identifying the type of people one should look to hire. The book covers two development concepts: Nomos, about ruling in an organization, and progressive responsibility from Luke 16:10. The chapters present the concepts from a scriptural base and include composite case examples that relate to contemporary organizations.

The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Paradox (Hardcover): Wendy K Smith, Marianne W Lewis, Paula Jarzabkowski, Ann Langley The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Paradox (Hardcover)
Wendy K Smith, Marianne W Lewis, Paula Jarzabkowski, Ann Langley
R4,810 Discovery Miles 48 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The notion of paradox dates back to ancient philosophy, yet only recently have scholars started to explore this idea in organizational phenomena. Two decades ago, a handful of provocative theorists urged researchers to take seriously the study of paradox, and thereby deepen our understanding of plurality, tensions, and contradictions in organizational life. Studies of organizational paradox have grown exponentially over the past two decades, canvassing varied phenomena, methods, and levels of analysis. These studies have explored such tensions as today and tomorrow, global integration and local distinctions, collaboration and competition, self and others, mission and markets. Yet even with both the depth and breadth of interest in organizational paradoxes, key issues around definitions and application remain. This handbook seeks to aid, engage, and fuel the expanding interest in organizational paradox. Contributions to this volume depict how paradox studies inform, and are informed, by other theoretical perspectives, while creating a resource that enables scholars to learn about and apply this lens across varied organizational phenomena. The increasing complexity, volatility, and ambiguity in our world continually surfaces paradoxical dynamics. Thus, this handbook offers insights to scholars across organizational theory.
