Language and Cognition in Bilinguals and Multilinguals - An Introduction (Hardcover): Annette M.B.De Groot Language and Cognition in Bilinguals and Multilinguals - An Introduction (Hardcover)
Annette M.B.De Groot
R4,522 Discovery Miles 45 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Psycholinguistics the field of science that examines the mental processes and knowledge structures involved in the acquisition, comprehension, and production of language had a strong monolingual orientation during the first four decades following its emergence around 1950. The awareness that a large part of mankind speaks more than one language that this may impact both on the way each individual language is used and on the thought processes of bilinguals and multilinguals, and that, consequently, our theories on human linguistic ability and its role in non-linguistic cognition are incomplete and, perhaps, false has led to a steep growth of studies on bilingualism and multilingualism since around 1995.

This textbook introduces the reader to the field of study that examines language acquisition, comprehension and production from the perspective of the bilingual and multilingual speaker. It furthermore provides an introduction to studies that investigate the implications of being bilingual on various aspects of non-linguistic cognition. The major topics covered are the development of language in children growing up in a bilingual environment either from birth or relatively soon after, late foreign language learning, and word recognition, sentence comprehension, speech production, and translation processes in bilinguals. Furthermore, the ability of bilinguals and multilinguals to generally produce language in the "intended" language is discussed, as is the cognitive machinery that enables this. Finally, the consequences of bilingualism and multilingualism for non-linguistic cognition and findings and views regarding the biological basis of bilingualism and multilingualism are presented.

The textbook 's primary readership are students and researchers in Cognitive Psychology, Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics, but teachers of language and translators and interpreters who wish to become better informed on the cognitive and biological basis of bilingualism and multilingualism will also benefit from it.

Glyn Williams, Gruffudd Williams
R3,299 R2,048 Discovery Miles 20 480 Save R1,251 (38%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book critically examines the European Union's "Unity in Diversity" mantra with regard to language. It uses a theoretical framework based on hegemony both as a system and as a relationship. Operating within sociolinguistics, the book replaces the notion of ideology in poststructuralist thought with that of hegemony. The authors argue that forging unity across language communities contradicts the tenets of classical liberal theory. Global neo-liberalism influences this orthodoxy, shifting the parameters of power and political control. Over nine chapters, the authors cover topics such as globalization and social change, justice, governance and education. The book will be of interest to sociolinguists, political scientists, sociologists, as well as scholars of language and globalization and European studies.

Becoming Biliterate - Identity, Ideology, and Learning to Read and Write in Two Languages (Hardcover, New): George L. Campbell Becoming Biliterate - Identity, Ideology, and Learning to Read and Write in Two Languages (Hardcover, New)
George L. Campbell
R4,920 Discovery Miles 49 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Through the real-life context of one child learning to be bilingual and biliterate, this book raises questions and provides a context for pre-service and practicing teachers to understand and reflect on how children learn to read and write in multiple languages. Highlighting the social and cognitive advantages of biliteracy, its purpose is to help teachers better understand the complexity by which young children become biliterate as they actively construct meaning and work through tensions resulting from their everyday life circumstances. Perspectives regarding identity and language ideologies are presented to help teachers refine their own pedagogical approaches to teaching linguistically diverse children. Readers are engaged in understanding early biliteracy through a process of articulating and questioning their own assumptions and beliefs about learning in multiple languages and literacies.

The Impacts of Language and Literacy Policy on Teaching Practices in Ghana - Postcolonial Perspectives on Early Literacy and... The Impacts of Language and Literacy Policy on Teaching Practices in Ghana - Postcolonial Perspectives on Early Literacy and Instruction (Hardcover)
Philomena Osseo-Asare
R4,472 Discovery Miles 44 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This text critically examines changes in Ghanaian language and literacy policy following independence in 1957 to consider its impacts on early literacy teaching. By adopting a postcolonial theoretical perspective, the text interrogates the logic behind policy changes which have prioritised English, local language, or biliteracy. It draws on data from interviews with teachers and researcher observation to demonstrate how policies have influenced teaching and learning. Dr Osseo-Asare's findings inform the development of a conceptual framework which highlights the socio-cultural factors that impact the literacy and biliteracy of young children in Ghana, offering solutions to help teachers combat the challenges of frequent policy changes. This timely monograph will prove to be an essential resource not only for researchers working on education policies, teacher education, and English-language learning in postcolonial Ghana but also for those looking to identify the thematic and methodological nuances of studying literacy and education in postcolonial contexts.

The Economics of the Multilingual Workplace (Hardcover): Francois Grin, Claudio Sfreddo, Francois Vaillancourt The Economics of the Multilingual Workplace (Hardcover)
Francois Grin, Claudio Sfreddo, Francois Vaillancourt
R4,631 Discovery Miles 46 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book proposes a path-breaking study of the economics of multilingualism at work, proposing a systematic approach to the identification and measurement of the ways in which language skills and economic performance are related.

Using the instruments of economic investigation, but also explicitly relating the analysis to the approaches to multilingualism at work developed in the language sciences, this interdisciplinary book proposes a systematic, step-by-step exploration of the issue. Starting from a general identification of the linkages between multilingualism and processes of value creation, it reviews the contributions of linguistics and economics before developing a new economic model of production in which language is taken into account. Testing of the model using data from two countries provides quantitative estimations of the influence of multilingualism on economic processes, showing that foreign language skills can make a considerable contribution to a country's GDP. These findings have significant implications for language policy and suggest strategies helping language planners to harness market forces for increased effectiveness.

Nonnative Speaker English Teachers - Research, Pedagogy, and Professional Growth (Hardcover): George Braine Nonnative Speaker English Teachers - Research, Pedagogy, and Professional Growth (Hardcover)
George Braine
R4,914 Discovery Miles 49 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

According to current estimates, about eighty percent of English teachers worldwide are nonnative speakers of the language. The nonnative speaker movement began a decade ago to counter the discrimination faced by these teachers and to champion their causes. As the first single-authored volume on the topic since the birth of the movement, this book fills the need for a coherent account that:

  • traces the origins and growth of the movement
  • summarizes the research that has been conducted
  • highlights the challenges faced by nonnative speaker teachers
  • promotes NNS teachersa (TM) professional growth

No discussion of world Englishes or the spread of English internationally is now complete without reference to the NNS movement. This book celebrates its first decade and charts a direction for its growth and development.

Language and Culture - Reflective Narratives and the Emergence of Identity (Hardcover): David Nunan, Julie Choi Language and Culture - Reflective Narratives and the Emergence of Identity (Hardcover)
David Nunan, Julie Choi
R5,383 Discovery Miles 53 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This state-of-the-art exploration of language, culture, and identity is orchestrated through prominent scholars? and teachers? narratives, each weaving together three elements: a personal account based on one or more memorable or critical incidents that occurred in the course of learning or using a second or foreign language; an interpretation of the incidents highlighting their impact in terms of culture, identity, and language; the connections between the experiences and observations of the author and existing literature on language, culture and identity.

What makes this book stand out is the way in which authors meld traditional ?academic? approaches to inquiry with their own personalized voices. This opens a window on different ways of viewing and doing research in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. What gives the book its power is the compelling nature of the narratives themselves. Telling stories is a fundamental way of representing and making sense of the human condition. These stories unpack, in an accessible but rigorous fashion, complex socio-cultural constructs of culture, identity, the self and other, and reflexivity, and offer a way into these constructs for teachers, teachers in preparation and neophyte researchers. Contributors from around the world give the book broad and international appeal.

Family Language Policy in the Polish Diaspora - A Focus on Australia (Hardcover): Piotr Romanowski Family Language Policy in the Polish Diaspora - A Focus on Australia (Hardcover)
Piotr Romanowski
R4,482 Discovery Miles 44 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores language practices, beliefs and management across a group of Polish immigrant families in Australia, drawing on these case studies as a lens through which to unpack dynamics of Family Language Policy (FLP) and their implications for future research on FLP. The volume begins by outlining the historical context of Polish immigration in Australia, charting two key waves of Polish migration in the 20th century and the subsequent unfolding of issues around language and culture maintenance in these families. This discussion paves the way for exploring key themes of language socialization, language ideologies and heritage language maintenance and the affordances of FLP research in elucidating these dynamics at work in the lived experiences of a group of Polish immigrant families in Melbourne. The book highlights the importance of a triangulated approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative methods, in offering nuanced insights into parental approaches and children's experiences of a bilingual upbringing and the wider impact of FLP on transnational families. Opening up avenues for future research on Family Language Policy and a better understanding of the language practices of specific communities in a globalised world, this book will be of interest to scholars in multilingualism, sociolinguistics and applied linguistics.

Second Language Pragmatics and English Language Education in East Asia (Hardcover): Cynthia Lee Second Language Pragmatics and English Language Education in East Asia (Hardcover)
Cynthia Lee
R4,473 Discovery Miles 44 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This edited collection addresses the link between second language pragmatics (including interlanguage and intercultural) research and English language education. The chapters use different contemporary research methods and theoretical frameworks such as conversation analysis, language-learners-as-ethnographers, discourse and interactional approaches and data in contexts (either in the region or overseas). The content explores and discusses the significance of learning and teaching of second language (L2) pragmatics in language education for learners who use English as a lingua franca for academic and intercultural communication purposes with native and non-native speakers of English, focusing on pragmatic actions, social behaviours, perceptions and awareness levels in three regions in East Asia - China, Japan and South Korea. It is an important contribution to the area of second language pragmatics in language education for East Asian learners. It recommends research-informed pedagogies for the learning and teaching of interlanguage or intercultural pragmatics in regions and places where similar cultural beliefs or practices are found. This is an essential read for researchers, language educators, classroom teachers, readers who are interested in second language pragmatics research and those interested in second language acquisition and English language education in the East Asian context.

Glocal Languages and Critical Intercultural Awareness - The South Answers Back (Paperback): Manuela Guilherme, Lynn Mario T.... Glocal Languages and Critical Intercultural Awareness - The South Answers Back (Paperback)
Manuela Guilherme, Lynn Mario T. Menezes de Souza
R1,468 Discovery Miles 14 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume provides a new perspective on prevailing discourses on translanguaging and multilingualism by looking at 'glocal' languages, local languages which have been successfully "globalized". Focusing on European languages recreated in Latin America, the book features examples from languages underexplored in the literature, including Brazilian Portuguese, Amerinidian poetics, and English, Spanish, Portuguese outside Europe, as a basis for advocating for an approach to language education rooted in critical pedagogy and post-colonial perspectives and countering hegemonic theories of globalization. While rooted in a discussion of the South, the book offers a fresh voice in current debates on language education that will be of broader interest to students and scholars across disciplines, including language education, multilingualism, cultural studies, and linguistic anthropology.

Ethnolinguistic Diversity and Education - Language, Literacy and Culture (Hardcover): Marcia Farr, Lisya Seloni, Juyoung Song Ethnolinguistic Diversity and Education - Language, Literacy and Culture (Hardcover)
Marcia Farr, Lisya Seloni, Juyoung Song
R4,788 Discovery Miles 47 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In recent decades, the linguistic and cultural diversity of school populations in the United States and other industrialized countries has rapidly increased along with globalization processes. At the same time, schooling as it is currently constituted continues to be ineffective for large numbers of students. Exploring crucial issues that emerge at the intersection of linguistic diversity and education, this volume:

  • provides an up-to-date review of sociolinguistic research and practice aimed at improving education for students who speak vernacular varieties of US English, English-based Creole languages, and non-English languages
  • explores the impact of dialect differences and community languages on ethnolinguistically diverse students' academic achievement
  • challenges the dominant monolingual Standard language ideology
  • presents sociolinguistically based approaches to language and literacy education that acknowledge and build on the linguistic and cultural resources students bring into the school.

Throughout, the authors argue for the application of research-based knowledge to the dire situation (as measured by school failure and drop-out rates) of many ethnolinguistic populations in US schools. The overall aim of the volume is to heighten acknowledgement and recognition of the linguistic and cultural resources students bring into the schools and to explore ways in which these resources can be used to extend the sociolinguistic repertoires, including academic English, of all students.

Translanguaging in EFL Contexts - A Call for Change (Paperback): Michael Rabbidge Translanguaging in EFL Contexts - A Call for Change (Paperback)
Michael Rabbidge
R1,371 Discovery Miles 13 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The purpose of this book is to promote the value of translanguaging in EFL teaching contexts. To date, translanguaging has been discussed mostly in regards to US and European contexts. This book will examine the teaching beliefs and practices of teachers within a South Korean elementary school context to evaluate the practices of current teachers who use translanguaging strategies when teaching. This examination utilizes sociological theories of pedagogic discourse to discuss the consequences of language exclusion policies on the peninsula. Using these theories, it presents an argument for why EFL contexts like South Korea need to reevaluate their current policies and understandings of language learning and teaching. By embracing translanguaging as an approach, the author argues, they will transform their traditional notions of language learning and teaching in order to view teachers as bilinguals, and learners as emerging bilinguals, rather than use terms of deficiency that have traditionally been in place for such contexts. This book's unique use of sociological theories of pedagogic discourse supports a need to promote the translanguaging ideology of language teaching and learning.

English Language Assessment and the Chinese Learner (Hardcover, Ton): Liying Cheng, Andy Curtis English Language Assessment and the Chinese Learner (Hardcover, Ton)
Liying Cheng, Andy Curtis
R3,506 R3,289 Discovery Miles 32 890 Save R217 (6%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'This volume addresses a very timely and important topic, and provides both broad and in-depth coverage of a number of large-scale English tests in China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, and about the Chinese learner.' ? Lyle F. Bachman, From the Foreword

Building on current theoretical and practical frameworks for English language assessment and testing, this book presents a comprehensive, up-to-date, relevant picture of English language assessment for students in China (Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) and for Chinese learners of English around the world. Written by well-recognized international scholars in language testing, it covers:

  • the history of tests and testing systems, issues and challenges, and current research in China
  • both test-designers? and test-users? points of view on test development and test validation within a range of political, economical, social, and financial contexts in China
  • theoretical/conceptual perspectives on the use of the English language assessment at different levels, including societal, university, and schools
  • empirical research related specifically to test development, curricular innovation, and test validation

Given the long history of objective testing and its extensive use in Chinese society, and considering the sheer number of students taking various tests in English in China and elsewhere, an understanding of the impact of English language testing is essential for anyone involved in testing and assessment issues in China and elsewhere in the world. This is a must-read volume for testing and assessment policy makers, curriculum designers, researchers, ESL/EFL materials writers, graduate students, and English language teachers/researchers at all levels.

Individual Differences and Processing Instruction (Hardcover, New): James F. Lee, Alessandro G. Benati Individual Differences and Processing Instruction (Hardcover, New)
James F. Lee, Alessandro G. Benati
R2,120 Discovery Miles 21 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Processing Instruction (PI) research has been of interest to the readership of Studies in Second Language Acquisition since VanPatten and Cadierno published the original study on PI there in 1993. In a previous volume James Lee and Alessandro Benati identified five research branches: the effects of Processing Instruction compared to the effects of other types of instruction; the effects of full Processing Instruction compared to the effects of structured input activities and explicit information; the effects of structured input compared to the effects of aurally and visually enhanced structured input; the effects of Processing Instruction measured over time; and the effects of delivering Processing Instruction in classrooms to groups of learners compared to delivering it in computer laboratories to individuals. What is missing from the database is an extended examination of the role that individual differences might play in the results generated by Processing Instruction. This book gathers together research on Processing Instruction that addresses individual differences in the research design and/or analyses. This collection of essays will open an additional branch of PI research.
