Radically reoriented under market reform, Chinese cities are playing an important role in China's economic development. The creation of housing and land markets is rapidly changing the face of Chinese cities. Mushrooming skyscrapers in the newly established central business district contrast shapely with the nearby old urban areas and unruly migrant settlements in urban fringes. Chinese cities present both the landscapes of the first and third world. Yet, radical marketization co-exists with ever-presence of state control. "Urban Development in" "Post-Reform" "China" explores the interaction of China's market development, state regulation and the resulting transformation and creation of new urban spaces. It provides the first integrated treatment of China's urban development in the dynamic market transition. Focusing on land and housing development, the authors show how the market has been "created" under post-reform urban conditions, which in turn challenges state regulation. Urban space constitutes a critical component of China's new growth strategies. Through the reconfiguration of urban space, market-oriented land development has been launched by the Chinese version of local boosterism. The authors examine "the state in action" and highlight how changing urban governance towards local entrepreneurial state facilitates market formation. City planning has been transformed from allocating state resources to place promotion; and municipal government formulated various competitive urban strategies through place-making. The resulting changes in urban internal structure are manifested in the renewal of the city center and urban sprawl at the periphery, creating "novel" urban landscape ofredeveloped central districts, university towns, science parks, and "urban villages."China has been very successful in using urban land development as an economic growth engine. The authors examine complex interactions between the market and state in creating China's new urbanism. State power is unlikely to wane and will persist. Despite more market orientation, the state is still playing an important role in urban development, especially in making the cities more competitive in the era of globalization and the development of service industries.
The expansion of the European Union in 2004 has had significant consequences for both existing and new members of the Union. New member states are assimilating into a new institutional and policy framework, while the changing geography of Europe provides a different context for policy development in pre-2004 member states. One of the more important fields in which these changes are impacting is regional development. It has been claimed that the natural sciences have abstracted for themselves a 'material world' set apart from human concerns, and social sciences, in their turn, constructed 'a world of actors devoid of things'. While a subject such as archaeology, by its very nature, takes objects into account, other disciplines, such as psychology, emphasize internal mental structures and other non-material issues. This book brings together a team of contributors from across the social sciences who have been taking 'things' more seriously to examine how people relate to objects. The contributors focus on every day objects and how these objects enter into our activities over the course of time. Using a combination of different theoretical approaches, including actor network theory, ecological psychology, cognitive linguistics and science and technology studies, the book argues against the standard notion of objects and their properties as inert and meaningless and argues for the need to understand the relations between people and objects in terms of process and change.
In this book, the author provides a critical examination and evaluation of a number of the central political questions currently being posed in urban studies. In the years since 1989, the societies of Russia and Eastern Europe
have undergone a remarkable transformation from socialism to
democracy and free market capitalism. Making an important
contribution to the theoretical literature of urbanism and
post-communist transition, this significant book considers the
change in the spatial structure of post-Soviet urban spaces since
the period of transition began. It argues that the era of
transformation can be considered as largely complete, and that this
has given way to a new stage of development as part of the global

Going beyond previous investigations into urban land use and travel, Petter Naess presents new research from Denmark on residential location and travel to show how and why urban spatial structures affect people's travel behaviour. In a comprehensive case study of the Copenhagen metropolitan area, Naess combines traditional quantitative travel surveys with qualitative interviews in order to identify the more detailed mechanisms through which urban structure affects travel behaviour. Recent developments in policy evaluation have focused on new notions of process and use or, notably, "influence." But this debate among evaluators on how evaluations are used has been essentially a closed one--evaluators talking only among themselves. The debate has gone on seemingly oblivious to fundamental changes in the intellectual landscape of public management, organizational theory, information technology, and knowledge management. New realities demand a different approach toward evaluation. The current era is characterized by the emergence of an increasingly global set of pressures for governments to perform effectively, not just efficiently, and to demonstrate that their performance is producing desired results. Information technology allows enormous quantities of information to be stored, sorted, analyzed, and made available at little or no cost. The result for those in the evaluation community is that, while individual evaluations are still conducted and reported upon, they are a rapidly diminishing source of information.
