A well-cared-for baby is a baby whose mother is taking care of herself. Put simply: good mother care Is good baby care. That's the core of the Fourth Trimester concept. In recent years doctors, nurses, midwives, and others involved in providing baby care have adopted this vital concept enthusiastically. The Fourth Trimester emphasizes that how a mother takes care of herself in the first three months of a new baby's life brings crucial benefits for her, for her baby, and for her partner and family. With this important new book, moms (as well as their partners and other caregivers, whether lay or professional) now have the resources to have an ideal Fourth Trimester experience. Cynthia Gabriel, a doula and the author of the best-selling book Natural Hospital Birth, delivers all the information, guidance, and encouragement new mothers need to take care of their bodies, minds, and spirits during the vital months of the Fourth Trimester-so that they feel their best and so their babies have the best possible chance to thrive. "The Fourth Trimester Companion is the ultimate guide for any new family. Cynthia Gabriel provides accurate and up-to-date information that will prepare you for what happens after you give birth and will leave you feeling inspired and empowered to start your family in health and joy. This book truly is a masterpiece for new families today." --Ana Paula Markel, president-elect, DONA International (formerly Doulas of North America), and founder of Bini Birth, Los Angeles "This book is born from Cynthia Gabriel's incredible expertise. As a medical anthropologist, an educator, a doula, and a mother of three, Cynthia guides us through the early months of infancy and early parenting not only from a place of knowledge and experience, but also with exquisite sensitivity, compassion, and practicality." --Lesley Everest, doula and doula trainer, MotherWit, Montreal "How can such a delicate and tiny being as a newborn take so much space in the house and in your heart? This book will gently take you by the hand and walk beside you. Like a good friend it will not judge, but it will offer support with the questions you have and some you might not even know were coming. It is both practical and deep. It will help you feel and say, 'I can do this.'" --Kim John Payne, M.Ed., author of Simplicity Parenting and The Soul of Discipline

You are not going mad - it's your hormones! The perimenopause (the time leading up to the menopause) is often misunderstood. For some women, it lasts a few months; for others it consumes the best part of a decade. This transitional period can be a time of emotional turmoil, shifting priorities and physical changes: from hot flushes, insomnia, low mood and anxiety, to itchy skin, thinning hair, weight gain and loss of libido . . . to name just a few! Millions of women in their thirties and forties go through this without even realising they are perimenopausal. It's time they take back control. In The Perimenopause Solution, Dr Shahzadi Harper, a medical doctor specialising in women's health and Emma Bardwell, a registered nutritionist, provide a blueprint to help women find a new balance in this important phase of their lives, so they can be prepared, not scared. Akin to getting two expert consultations in one, this holistic and accessible guide combines practical, no-nonsense information on the physical and mental changes to expect, with powerful advice on managing symptoms and nutrition, as what you eat during the perimenopause can dramatically affect your experience of it. Expert-led and forward-thinking in its approach, The Perimenopause Solution will not just help you survive the journey towards the menopause - it will let you thrive.

The Lady's Handbook For Her Mysterious Illness (Hardcover, Digital original): Sarah Ramey The Lady's Handbook For Her Mysterious Illness (Hardcover, Digital original)
Sarah Ramey 1
R501 R422 Discovery Miles 4 220 Save R79 (16%) Ships in 10 - 20 working days

'A visceral, scathing, erudite read that digs deep into how modern medicine continues to fail women and what can be done about it' Booklist The darkly funny memoir of Sarah Ramey's years-long battle with a mysterious illness that doctors thought was all in her head - but wasn't. A revelation and an inspiration for millions of women whose legitimate health complaints are ignored. In her harrowing, defiant and unforgettable memoir, Sarah Ramey recounts the decade-long saga of how a seemingly minor illness in her senior year of college turned into a prolonged and elusive condition that destroyed her health but that doctors couldn't diagnose or treat. Worse, as they failed to cure her, they hinted that her devastating symptoms were psychological. The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness is a memoir with a mission: to help the millions of (mostly) women who suffer from unnamed or misunderstood conditions--autoimmune illnesses, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic Lyme disease, chronic pain and many more. Ramey's pursuit of a diagnosis and cure for her own mysterious illness becomes a page-turning medical mystery that reveals a new understanding of today's chronic illnesses as ecological in nature, driven by modern changes to the basic foundations of health, from the quality of our sleep, diet and social connections to the state of our microbiomes. Her book will open eyes, change lives and, ultimately, change medicine. 'Ramey's uncanny grit and fortitude will deeply inspire the multitudes facing similar issues' Publishers Weekly 'This is a book for anyone who has ever asked a question that didn't have an immediate or easy answer, anyone who has worried about themselves or a loved one who isn't getting better - despite following all the experts' advice - and anyone interested in their own health, public health or medicine; in other words, it's a book with something resonant and useful for all of us' Chelsea Clinton

Exploring the Dirty Side of Women's Health (Paperback, New Ed): Mavis Kirkham Exploring the Dirty Side of Women's Health (Paperback, New Ed)
Mavis Kirkham
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Researchers from seven countries bring together key issues in women's health, social anthropology and midwifery, thus creating a wider picture than is usually available to students. Pollution is used as a concept to highlight and help to explain phenomena in women's health which are usually unexamined, but which can be highly disruptive of service provision and personal well being. Such phenomena often concern relationships between key actors, self-image and professional and personal status.
Particular issues will be addressed in depth by well known authors from several countries. For example: the chapters on breast feeding examine issues which form major obstacles to increasing the uptake of breasted but which are not being considered by policy makers. This analysis enables voices to be heard which are important but often ignored. The section on the dai, for instance, addresses birth in India and Pakistan from the viewpoint of those who deliver most babies in those countries, exploring the knowledge and needs which they share with their clients which do not completely fit with efforts to increase modern service provision.
This book addresses things out of place; from bodily leakage to outdated religious practices, from diagnoses that disrupt our self-image to beliefs and practices which undermine health service provision. As such its aim is to use the contradictions in our thinking around pollution and power to stimulate rethinking around women's health.

It seemed to me that many of the moments when my autism had caused problems, or at least marked me out as different, were those moments when I had come up against some unspoken law about how a girl or a woman should be, and failed to meet it. An autism diagnosis in midlife enabled Joanne Limburg to finally make sense of why her emotional expression, social discomfort and presentation had always marked her as an outsider. Eager to discover other women who had been misunderstood in their time, she writes a series of wide-ranging letters to four 'weird sisters' from history, addressing topics including autistic parenting, social isolation, feminism, the movement for disability rights and the appalling punishments that have been meted out over centuries to those deemed to fall short of the norm. This heartfelt, deeply compassionate and wholly original work humanises women who have so often been dismissed for their differences, and will be celebrated by 'weird sisters' everywhere.

Chimaraoke Izugbara, Eleanor Covan, Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock
R1,133 Discovery Miles 11 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited book includes new policy-relevant research on women's health issues in Africa. Scholars explore critical topics from different disciplinary traditions using a variety of research methodologies and data sources. The contributors include African scholars with in-depth knowledge of their home contexts, who can furnish nuanced interpretations of local health issues and trends; international researchers who bring vigorous comparative viewpoints; emerging scholars adding to scientific knowledge; and more established researchers with a deep global knowledge of women's health issues. The range of women's health issues is vast, including the HIV epidemic and its impacts; domestic violence; the persistence of homebirths; and abortion. In addition, the book investigates emerging health concerns such as CVDs and cancers. Readers will learn that, while old health issues have persisted and assumed new dimensions, newer concerns have materialized and are now gaining momentum. The inability of health systems to tackle these issues complicates matters in Africa, creating a sense of desperation that can only be successfully confronted through strong political will and strategic planning, grounded in further research. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Health Care for Women International.

Documenting Death is a gripping ethnographic account of the deaths of pregnant women in a hospital in a low-resource setting in Tanzania. Through an exploration of everyday ethics and care practices on a local maternity ward, anthropologist Adrienne E. Strong untangles the reasons Tanzania has achieved so little sustainable success in reducing maternal mortality rates, despite global development support. Growing administrative pressures to document good care serve to preclude good care in practice while placing frontline healthcare workers in moral and ethical peril. Maternal health emergencies expose the precarity of hospital social relations and accountability systems, which, together, continue to lead to the deaths of pregnant women.
