Objectives This book is used to teach vibratory mechanics to undergraduate engineers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne. It is a basic course, at the level of the first university degree, necessary for the proper comprehension of the following disciplines. Vibrations of continuous linear systems (beams, plates) random vibration of linear systems vibrations of non-linear systems dynamics of structures experimental methods, rheological models, etc. Effective teaching methods have been given the highest priority. Thus the book covers basic theories of vibratory mechanics in an ap propriately rigorous and complete way, and is illustrated by nume rous applied examples. In addition to university students, it is suitable for industrial engineers who want to strengthen or complete their training. It has been written so that someone working alone should find it easy to read. pescription The subject of the book is the vibrations of linear mechanical sys tems having only a finite number of degrees of freedom (ie discrete linear systems). These can be divided into the following two catego ries: -X- systems of solids which are considered to be rigid, and which are acted upon by elastic forces and by linear resist.ive forces (viscous damping forces). deformable continuous systems which have been made discrete. In other words, systems which are replaced (approximately) by systems having only a limited number of degrees of freedom, using digital or experimental methods."
The aim of this book is to impart a sound understanding, both physical and mathematical, of the fundamental theory of vibration and its applications. The book presents in a simple and systematic manner techniques that can easily be applied to the analysis of vibration of mechanical and structural systems. Unlike other texts on vibrations, the approach is general, based on the conservation of energy and Lagrangian dynamics, and develops specific techniques from these foundations in clearly understandable stages. This book explores recent developments in theoretical research and mathematical modelling of real-world complex systems, organized in four parts. The first part of the book is devoted to the mathematical tools for the design and analysis in engineering and social science study cases. Not many disciplines can c1aim the richness of creative ideas that make up the subject of analytical mechanics. This is not surprising since the beginnings of analyti cal mechanics mark also the beginnings of the theoretical treatment of other physical sciences, and contributors to analytical mechanics have been many, inc1uding the most brilliant mathematicians and theoreticians in the history of mankind. As the foundation for theoretical physics and the associated branches of the engineering sciences, an adequate command of analytical mechanics is an essential tool for any engineer, physicist, and mathematician active in dynamics. A fascinating dis cipline, analytical mechanics is not only indispensable for the solution of certain mechanics problems but also contributes so effectively towards a fundamental under standing of the subject of mechanics and its applications. In analytical mechanics the fundamental laws are expressed in terms of work done and energy exchanged. The extensive use of mathematics is a consequence of the fact that in analytical mechanics problems can be expressed by variational State ments, thus giving rise to the employment of variational methods. Further it can be shown that the independent variables may be either displacements or impulses, thus providing in principle the possibility of two complementary formulations, i.e. a dis placement formulation and an impulse formulation, for each problem. This duality is an important characteristic of mechanics problems and is given special emphasis in the present book."

"Symmetries and Semi-invariants in the Analysis of Nonlinear Systems" details the analysis of continuous- and discrete-time dynamical systems described by differential and difference equations respectively. Differential geometry provides the essential tools for the analysis, tools such as first-integrals or orbital symmetries, together with normal forms of vector fields and of maps. The use of such tools allows the solution of some important problems, studied in detail in the text, which includelinearization by state immersionand the computation of nonlinear superposition formulae for nonlinear systems described by solvable Lie algebras. The theory is developed for general nonlinear systems and, in view of their importance for modeling physical systems, specialized for the class of Hamiltonian systems. By using the strong geometric structure of Hamiltonian systems, the results proposed are stated in a quite different, less complex and more easily comprehensible manner. Throughout the text the results are illustrated by many examples, some of them being physically motivated systems, so that the reader can appreciate how much insight is gained by means of these techniques. Various control systems applications of the techniques are characterized including: . computation of the flow of nonlinear systems; . computation of semi-invariants; . computation of Lyapunov functions for stability analysis. This book presents a novel theory of multibody dynamics with distinct features, including unified continuum theory, multiscale modeling technology of multibody system, and motion formalism implementation. All these features together with the introductions of fundamental concepts of vector, dual vector, tensor, dual tensor, recursive descriptions of joints, and the higher-order implicit solvers formulate the scope of the book’s content. In this book, a multibody system is defined as a set consisted of flexible and rigid bodies which are connected by any kinds of joints or constraints to achieve the desired motion. Generally, the motion of multibody system includes the translation and rotation; it is more efficient to describe the motion by using the dual vector or dual tensor directly instead of defining two types of variables, the translation and rotation separately. Furthermore, this book addresses the detail of motion formalism and its finite element implementation of the solid, shell-like, and beam-like structures. It also introduces the fundamental concepts of mechanics, such as the definition of vector, dual vector, tensor, and dual tensor, briefly. Unlike the conventional research for the general theory of stability, this mono graph deals with problems on stability and stabilization of dynamic systems with respect not to all but just to a given part of the variables characterizing these systems. Such problems are often referred to as the problems of partial stability (stabilization). They naturally arise in applications either from the requirement of proper performance of a system or in assessing system capa bility. In addition, a lot of actual (or desired) phenomena can be formulated in terms of these problems and be analyzed with these problems taken as the basis. The following multiaspect phenomena and problems can be indicated: * "Lotka-Volterra ecological principle of extinction;" * focusing and acceleration of particles in electromagnetic fields; * "drift" of the gyroscope axis; * stabilization of a spacecraft by specially arranged relative motion of rotors connected to it. Also very effective is the approach to the problem of stability (stabilization) with respect to all the variables based on preliminary analysis of partial sta bility (stabilization). A. M. Lyapunov, the founder of the modern theory of stability, was the first to formulate the problem of partial stability. Later, works by V. V. Rumyan tsev drew the attention of many mathematicians and mechanicians around the world to this problem, which resulted in its being intensively worked out. The method of Lyapunov functions became the key investigative method which turned out to be very effective in analyzing both theoretic and applied problems.

This book is aimed to provide comprehensive and systematic knowledge of kinematic synthesis as developed up to date. Modern mechanical systems require advance kinematics knowledge to support mechanism design with sound theories and methods.
