Handbook of Clinical Teaching (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Somnath Mookherjee, Ellen M. Cosgrove Handbook of Clinical Teaching (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Somnath Mookherjee, Ellen M. Cosgrove
R3,231 Discovery Miles 32 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Targeting the practical needs of clinical teachers who do not have extensive time to undergo additional training, this book provides an accessible, on-the-spot resource to bolster teaching skills and optimize the education of trainees. A massive transformation takes place every summer in the United States: thousands of trainees in graduate medical education are appointed as attending physicians responsible for effectively teaching the next generation of medical students and residents. This handbook includes only the most relevant topics for new clinical teachers, and covers the basics of clinical teaching, teaching in specific situations, teaching different audiences, and best practices for handling challenging situations. The format is conducive to "just in time" learning, perfect for quick reference before meeting with learners or engaging in specific teaching situations, such as in an ambulatory clinic or at the bedside. Key points are emphasized with frequent use of tables and boxed practical content. Applicable to all teaching attendings regardless of specialty, the Handbook of Clinical Teaching is a valuable aid for individuals who wish to improve their teaching, and serves as a practical guide for faculty development in clinical teaching.

Ton J. Cleophas, Aeilko H. Zwinderman
R5,431 Discovery Miles 54 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook consists of ten chapters, and is a must-read to all medical and health professionals, who already have basic knowledge of how to analyze their clinical data, but still, wonder, after having done so, why procedures were performed the way they were. The book is also a must-read to those who tend to submerge in the flood of novel statistical methodologies, as communicated in current clinical reports, and scientific meetings. In the past few years, the HOW-SO of current statistical tests has been made much more simple than it was in the past, thanks to the abundance of statistical software programs of an excellent quality. However, the WHY-SO may have been somewhat under-emphasized. For example, why do statistical tests constantly use unfamiliar terms, like probability distributions, hypothesis testing, randomness, normality, scientific rigor, and why are Gaussian curves so hard, and do they make non-mathematicians getting lost all the time? The book will cover the WHY-SOs.

Paul Summergrad, Roger G Kathol
R2,281 Discovery Miles 22 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Integrated Care in Psychiatry: Redefining the Role of Mental Health Professionals in the Medical Setting is a landmark title in the field, offering a clear, detailed, and cohesive call by leading experts for coordinated care for patients with concurrent psychiatric and medical conditions. The renowned editors and authors argue that what is slowly occurring, and greatly needed at a faster pace, is nothing less than a sea change in the way that psychiatric care will be delivered. The current, mostly segregated, medical and psychiatric model of care has led to the development of competing medical and psychiatric subcultures that have resulted in a lack of dialog among health providers, administrators, and payers - and thus in less than optimal patient outcomes. To remedy this problem, the book offers a practical, insightful road map to achieving the central tenet of health reform - truly coordinated, patient-centered care where the care experience for the patient, the medical care itself, and the cost outcomes improve as the system changes from fee-for-service to population-based health. An invaluable reference for all clinicians, policy makers, payers, administrators, and others interested in the debate surrounding healthcare systems, Integrated Care in Psychiatry: Redefining the Role of Mental Health Professionals in the Medical Setting is a major contribution to the literature and a gold standard resource.

Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2012): Isidoro Di Carlo,... Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2012)
Isidoro Di Carlo, Roberto Biffi
R3,251 Discovery Miles 32 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since their first application in 1982, Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (TIVADs) have become increasingly important in the clinical practice, as more intensive chemotherapy and parenteral treatments have come into use. At this time, there is objective evidence that TIVADs are a safe, effective strategy for long-term venous access; they play a significant role throughout the management of the oncology patient, as they are needed in the initial phases for active treatments as well as in the last stages for palliative measures, making possible repeated administration of chemotherapeutic vesicant agents, nutrients, antibiotics, analgesics, and blood products. According to a number of prospective studies, use of TIVADs is associated with a significant complication rate (10% to 25% of all patients). Evidence-based data support that most complications are directly related to inappropriate technique of placement and/or nursing care, sometimes leading to TIVAD loss, significant morbidity, increased duration of hospitalization, and additional medical cost. A group of world-renowned experts - both in the clinical and research fields - contributed to this volume, whose aim is to provide clinicians, nurses and medical students with a multidisciplinary, full update on these devices, as long term central venous access can no be longer considered a routine matter, and serious complications can be maintained at a very low level only if strict adherence to a well-defined protocol of surgical technique and of catheter care is maintained.

Advances in Clinical Science (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Mieczyslaw Pokorski Advances in Clinical Science (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Mieczyslaw Pokorski
R2,969 Discovery Miles 29 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book presents the latest developments in clinical medicine, particularly involved with pulmonary care and diseases. Emphasis is placed on the role of childhood obesity, often a result of the ill effects of an unhealthy diet and nutritional deficits, in shaping propensity for inflammatory pathologies, allergies, immune deficiency and respiratory and cardiovascular sequelae in adult life. Oxidative damage, caused by not full well understood cellular biochemistry, when unchecked by antioxidative rescue mechanisms, takes toll on a respiratory health. The book underscores the need to consider the complexity of mutual interactions of pathophysiological processes, which calls for tailoring the management strategies depending on the subgroups which patients belong to, be it obesity, children or elderly. The chapters also tackle biological diseases with genetic underpinnings. The application of genetics to identify the molecular alterations or mutations will serve well both diagnostics and targeted optimization of treatment; the poignant exemplar being the histological subtypes of lung cancer. The book provides a source of current facts and trends in clinical research and practice.

A comprehensive and practical resource for analyses of crossover designs For ethical reasons, it is vital to keep the number of patients in a clinical trial as low as possible. As evidenced by extensive research publications, crossover design can be a useful and powerful tool to reduce the number of patients needed for a parallel group design in studying treatments for non-curable chronic diseases. This book introduces commonly-used and well-established statistical tests and estimators in epidemiology that can easily be applied to hypothesis testing and estimation of the relative treatment effect for various types of data scale in crossover designs. Models with distribution-free random effects are assumed and hence most approaches considered here are semi-parametric. The book provides clinicians and biostatisticians with the exact test procedures and exact interval estimators, which are applicable even when the number of patients in a crossover trial is small. Systematic discussion on sample size determination is also included, which will be a valuable resource for researchers involved in crossover trial design. Key features: * Provides exact test procedures and interval estimators, which are especially of use in small-sample cases. * Presents most test procedures and interval estimators in closed-forms, enabling readers to calculate them by use of a pocket calculator or commonly-used statistical packages. * Each chapter is self-contained, allowing the book to be used a reference resource. * Uses real-life examples to illustrate the practical use of test procedures and estimators * Provides extensive exercises to help readers appreciate the underlying theory, learn other relevant test procedures and understand how to calculate the required sample size. Crossover Designs: Testing, Estimation and Sample Size will be a useful resource for researchers from biostatistics, as well as pharmaceutical and clinical sciences. It can also be used as a textbook or reference for graduate students studying clinical experiments.

Handbook of Biomedical Image Analysis - Volume 3: Registration Models (Paperback, 2005 ed.): David Wilson, Swamy Laxminarayan Handbook of Biomedical Image Analysis - Volume 3: Registration Models (Paperback, 2005 ed.)
David Wilson, Swamy Laxminarayan
R11,753 Discovery Miles 117 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our goal is to develop automated methods for the segmentation of thr- dimensional biomedical images. Here, we describe the segmentation of c- focal microscopy images of bee brains (20 individuals) by registration to one or several atlas images. Registration is performed by a highly parallel imp- mentation of an entropy-based nonrigid registration algorithm using B-spline transformations. We present and evaluate different methods to solve the cor- spondence problem in atlas based registration. An image can be segmented by registering it to an individual atlas, an average atlas, or multiple atlases. When registering to multiple atlases, combining the individual segmentations into a ?nalsegmentationcanbeachievedbyatlasselection, ormulticlassi?erdecision fusion. Wedescribeallthesemethodsandevaluatethesegmentationaccuracies that they achieve by performing experiments with electronic phantoms as well as by comparing their outputs to a manual gold standard. The present work is focused on the mathematical and computational t- ory behind a technique for deformable image registration termed Hyperelastic Warping, and demonstration of the technique via applications in image regist- tion and strain measurement. The approach combines well-established prin- ples of nonlinear continuum mechanics with forces derived directly from thr- dimensional image data to achieve registration. The general approach does not require the de?nition of landmarks, ?ducials, or surfaces, although it can - commodate these if available. Representative problems demonstrate the robust and ?exible nature of the approach. Three-dimensional registration methods are introduced for registering MRI volumes of the pelvis and prostate. The chapter ?rst reviews the applications, xi xii Preface challenges, and previous methods of image registration in the prostate.
