P.S. Shetty
R6,309 Discovery Miles 63 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the rapid increase in the world's population, and the improvements in health and longevity, the demographic profile is altering and resulting in changes in the patterns of nutritional problems. There is a global epidemic of diet-related non-communicable diseases and, until now, industrialised countries have largely borne the brunt of it. In the last thirty years, however, there have been large increases in the mortality rates from diet-related chronic diseases, both in Eastern Europe and in rapidly developing countries in transition. Diet, Nutrition and Chronic Disease: Lessons from Contrasting Worlds is the sixth of a series of annual public health forums organised by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. It summarises the current state of the art of our understanding of the problem of non-communicable diseases and their primary prevention, and aims to:
* Increase international awareness of the global burden of non-communicable diseases and in particular to highlight the trends in developing countries.
* Evaluate the impact of changes in diet, nutrition and lifestyle that predispose to chronic non-communicable diseases in modern societies.
* Share knowledge of the growing problems of non-communicable diseases and experiences related to its prevention between health professionals of developing and developed countries.
* Identify and prioritise major research issues and suggest strategies to deal with the global epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases.
This book is an invaluable volume for public health professionals and nutritionists, health and nutrition policy makers and researchers, national governments and international agencies concernedwith population health and nutrition.

Biomedical Applications of Spectroscopy (Hardcover): R.J.H. Clark Biomedical Applications of Spectroscopy (Hardcover)
R.J.H. Clark
R12,634 Discovery Miles 126 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

About this book— In recent years, a number of different spectroscopic techniques have been applied to the study of a wide range of biomedical topics. Biomedical investigations in fields as diverse as eye lens research, the study of cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, and the study of oxidative stress in disease can now be carried out by spectroscopic means. The nine chapters in Biomedical Applications of Spectroscopy present an authoritative overview of the current status of the field, with each chapter written by acknowledged experts. A wide range of techniques is considered, including optical microspectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, NMR and EPR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. This highly topical volume will stimulate interest in this expanding field, and point the way towards future directions in research. The major objectives of this established series are to integrate theory and practice and to bring together different branches of both academic and industrial research through the presentation of critical review articles in fundamental and applied spectroscopy. The policy of the editors is to commission authoritative reviews by acknowledged leaders in the various fields of spectroscopy. Thus each volume presents a carefully composed picture of the ‘state of the art’ for a particular area. For each volume the subject matter is presented in a manner which is Comprehensible to the non-expert, for whom the series will continue to provide a valuable introduction, and a timely overview of topics in spectroscopy which are of current interest and importance. At the same time the involved expert will find much to engage his or her attention. The series is of interest to research scientists and technologists, to teachers and both graduate and undergraduate students.

Joseph Varon, Robert E. Jr. Fromm
R1,428 Discovery Miles 14 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Critical care medicine is a relatively new specialty. Over the past few decades, we have seen an enormous growth in the number of inten sive care units (ICUs) worldwide. Medical students, residents, fellows, attending physicians, critical care nurses, pharmacists, respiratory ther apists, and other health-care providers (irrespective of their ultimate field of practice) will spend several months or years of their profes sional lives taking care of critically ill or severely injured patients. These clinicians must have special training, experience, and compe tence in managing complex problems in their patients. In addition, they must interpret the data obtained by many kinds of monitoring devices, and they must integrate this information with their knowl edge of the pathophysiology of disease. This handbook was written for every practitioner engaged in criti cal care medicine. We have attempted to present basic and generally accepted clinical information and some important formulas as well as laboratory values and tables that we feel will be useful to the practi tioner of critical care medicine. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the ICU. Chapters 2 through 18 follow an outline format and are divided by organ system (i. e. , neurologic disorders, cardiovascular dis orders), as well as special topics (i. e. , environmental disorders, trauma, toxicology). In addition, many of these chapters review some useful facts and formulas systematically. Finally, Chapters 19 and 20 supply lists of pharmacologic agents and dosages commonly used in the ICU and laboratory values relevant to the ICU.

100 Cases for Medical Data Interpretation (Paperback): David Howlett, Nicola Gainsborough 100 Cases for Medical Data Interpretation (Paperback)
David Howlett, Nicola Gainsborough
R1,158 Discovery Miles 11 580 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Data interpretation questions based on clinical cases are a popular means of testing medical students both during undergraduate studies and as an element of finals examinations. Written by a small team of authors with extensive teaching experience, 100 Cases in Medical Data Interpretation provides invaluable guidance from lecturers who understand from personal experience that detailed and accurate explanations are the key to successful revision. This book presents 100 cases arranged by specialty area-radiology, clinical chemistry, haematology and cardiology-as well as a random section of miscellaneous cases. Questions accompanying each case prompt the reader to consider how the data presented might be correctly understood. A clear discussion of how the correct answer was reached, with boxed highlights and bullet lists of key points, makes this book an excellent learning aid during all stages of clinical studies, and particularly while preparing for medical finals.

Rational Diagnosis and Treatment - Evidence-Based Clinical Decision-Making 4e (Hardcover, 4th Edition): P Gotzsche Rational Diagnosis and Treatment - Evidence-Based Clinical Decision-Making 4e (Hardcover, 4th Edition)
P Gotzsche
R2,260 Discovery Miles 22 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This fourth edition of Peter Gotzsche's 'Rational Diagnosis and Treatment' argues that clinical decision-making should be built from first principles. By asking relevant questions, such as 'how reliable are various sorts of data?', 'how has the disease classification evolved over time, and is it logical?', fewer mistakes will be made by the practising physician and trainee.

This beautifully written book integrates the science and statistical approach of evidence-based medicine with the art and humanism of medical practice. It stresses that, whenever possible, clinical decisions must be based on the best evidence from clinical research; but also highlights the pitfalls of such research and the problems involved in applying evidence from groups of patients to the individual patient.

Such an intellectually challenging book is ideal for medical students, practitioners and doctors who require theoretical and practical clinical skills to help ensure that they apply theory to their practice, to achieve the best possible outcomes.

How does the diagnostic process narrow down options, and what are the pitfalls in diagnostic reasoning?

How do randomness, the spontaneous course of the disease, the placebo effect, luck and clinical trials come together?

What is the nature of reasoning?

What is the true value of the published literature?

How do commercial interests distort our perceptions about drugs?

Should people get screened for cancer and other diseases?

New edition contains:

Updated sections on placebo and meta-analysis

Sections on different research designs, focusing on advantages and limitations

Notes on increased medicalisation and the effectsof cancer screening on healthy people

Updated section on alternative medicine

Greater focus on insufficient reporting of harms of interventions

Additional text on academic freedom.

Disease and Diagnosis - Value-Dependent Realism (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): William E. Stempsey Disease and Diagnosis - Value-Dependent Realism (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)
William E. Stempsey
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The germs of the ideas in this book became implanted in me during my experience as a resident in clinical pathology at Boston University Medical Center. At the time, I had inklings that the test results churned out by our laboratories were more than scientific facts. As a philosophically unsophisticated young physician, however, I had no language or framework to analyze what I saw as a deep philosophical problem, a problem largely unrecognized by most physicians. The test results provided by our laboratories were accurate and of great practical importance for patient care. However, most of the physicians who relied on our test results to diagnose and treat their patients either did not have the time or interest to consider the philosophical issues inherent in diagnosis, or, like me, had inadequate means to further analyze them. It was more than ten years later that I began doctoral studies in philosophy, and I was fortunate to find a faculty that was supportive of my efforts to address the problem. This book began as my doctoral dissertation in the Department of Philosophy at Georgetown University. I would like to acknowledge the assistance of my mentor, Robert Veatch, Ph. D. Our conversations during my Georgetown years led me in new and often fascinating directions. I would also like to acknowledge the help of Kenneth Schaffner, M. D. , Ph. D.

Biochemistry for Clinical Medicine (Paperback, Reissue): Ira Thabrew, Ruth M. Ayling Biochemistry for Clinical Medicine (Paperback, Reissue)
Ira Thabrew, Ruth M. Ayling; Contributions by Claire Wicks
R1,217 Discovery Miles 12 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Developments in biochemistry have contributed immensely to the rate at which medical knowledge has expended in recent years. Following the GMC recommendations regarding undergraduate medical education, Biochemistry for Clinical Medicine integrates, in a single volume, all aspects of biochemistry required by a medical student, with a special focus on information specific to medicine as opposed to laboratory-based biochemistry. The first section of the book provides an understanding of basic cell biology and the critical concepts of membrane transport, cellular energetics, information storage, transmission and expression, as well as describing the essential chemistry and metabolism of cellular biomolecules and the clinical conditions that arise from disturbances in their metabolism. The second section adopts a systems-based approach to present clinical biochemistry in an easily readable and concise manner, using tables and clear diagrams to summarise important facts, as well as providing information on the biochemical basis of good nutrition.
