This book presents a "philosophy of science education" as a
research field as well as its value for curriculum, instruction and
teacher pedagogy. It seeks to re-think science education as an
educational endeavour by examining why past reform efforts have
been only partially successful, including why the fundamental goal
of achieving scientific literacy after several "reform waves" has
proven to be so elusive. The identity of such a philosophy is first
defined in relation to the fields of philosophy, philosophy of
science, and philosophy of education. It argues that educational
theory can support teacher's pedagogical content knowledge and that
history, philosophy and sociology of science should inform and
influence pedagogy. Some case studies are provided which examine
the nature of science and the nature of language to illustrate why
and how a philosophy of science education contributes to science
education reform. It seeks to contribute in general to the
improvement of curriculum design and science teacher education. The
perspective to be taken on board is that to teach science is to
have a philosophical frame of mind-about the subject, about
education, about one's personal teacher identity.
The hilarious, moving and adventure-packed new novel for readers of
9 and up from Ross Welford, the bestselling and Costa-shortlisted
author of Time Travelling with a Hamster The year is 2425.
Centuries after a catastrophic meteor collision, nature has retaken
the earth. In a small town in what was once England, young Ocean
Mooney and the monkey-owning Duke Smiff have just dug up a 400
year-old tablet computer. Meanwhile, in the present day, Thomas
Reeve and his genius cousin Kylie create the Time Tablet - a device
which they hope will allow them to communicate with the future. But
when the Time Tablet malfunctions live on television, Thomas and
Kylie are sucked into the year 2425 - and have only 24 hours to
return home, and save the future of humanity...

Gain a clear understanding of what effective teachers doand how
successful students learn Over the past 20 years, a greater
concentration on research aimed at both teaching and learning has
revealed that chalk and talk teaching, copying notes, and cookbook
practical lessons offer little challenge to students. Teaching in
the Sciences: Learner-Centered Approaches steers the learning
process away from traditional modes of instruction to a more
student-centered, activity-based curriculum that makes science
relevant, engaging, and interesting. This innovative book helps
educators bring out the best in their studentsand themselvesby
identifying and meeting students' needs and providing environments
that encourage active, strategic learning. Helpful tables and
figures make complex information easy to access and understand.
Rather than focusing on teaching methods that merely deal in the
content of life science, Teaching in the Sciences: Learner-Centered
Approaches promotes a deep learning designed to develop critical
and skilled learners. This collection of frank and thoughtful
empirically based papers places greater emphasis on learning
environments and social interaction patterns, assessment processes,
and perceptions of students and teachers in a range of learning and
teaching settings in the life sciences. The book presents
strategies for mentoring and assessing students, assessments of
learning outcomes, innovative approaches to curriculum design,
constructivist approaches to teaching science, how to use
technology to support learning, and practical examples of
learner-centered teaching that mark important steps on a journey to
transform the learning process. Teaching in the Sciences:
Learner-Centered Approaches examines: using broadband
videoconferencing for distance learning in tertiary science
assessing for learning in the crucial first year of university stu
The larger text and carefully controlled language level make the
pages more accessible for lower achievers. More regular in-text
questions and the end-of-spread questions build up pupils'
knowledge - and confidence - throughout the lesson. Red and Green
books have identical pagination, so you can use them side by side
in a mixed-ability class.
