Turkey: The Pendulum between Military Rule and Civilian Authoritarianism (Hardcover): Fatih Cagatay Cengiz Turkey: The Pendulum between Military Rule and Civilian Authoritarianism (Hardcover)
Fatih Cagatay Cengiz
R6,184 Discovery Miles 61 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Winner of the 2021 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award In Turkey: The Pendulum between Military Rule and Civilian Authoritarianism, Fatih Cagatay Cengiz explains Turkey's trajectory of military and civilian authoritarianism while offering an alternative framework for understanding the Kemalist state and state-society relations. This book clearly captures the zeitgeist of the moment Turkey has passed/has been passing through: democratisation, authoritarianism, and the coup cycle. Moreover, the book not only focuses on Turkish domestic politics with regards to procedural democratisation and waves of authoritarianism under the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP), it also engages with Turkey's recent foreign policy; policy that pushes Turkey to take an active role in the Syrian conflict through the concept of 'Neo-Ottomanism'.

Feeding Istanbul: The Political Economy of Urban Provisioning (Hardcover): Candan Turkkan Feeding Istanbul: The Political Economy of Urban Provisioning (Hardcover)
Candan Turkkan
R6,290 Discovery Miles 62 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How was Istanbul, once the capital of the Ottoman Empire and now the financial heart of contemporary Turkey, provisioned in the early 19th century? Tracing how the sovereign's duty to provision the city and protect his subjects from hunger was gradually transferred to the market and became a responsibility of the subjects (later, citizens) alone, Feeding Istanbul makes a compelling case for situating food politics, and politics of urban provisioning in particular, at the centre of the way we think about the relationship between the sovereign and the political community..

Covid-19 and the Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty - Studies of Social Phenomena and Social Theory Across 6 Continents... Covid-19 and the Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty - Studies of Social Phenomena and Social Theory Across 6 Continents (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Patrick R. Brown, Jens O. Zinn
R3,993 Discovery Miles 39 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a global perspective on COVID-19, taking the heterogenous realities of the pandemic into account. Contributions are rooted in critical social science studies of risk and uncertainty and characterized by theoretical approaches such as cultural theory, risk society theory, governmentality perspectives, and many important insights from 'southern' theories. Some of the chapters in the book have a more theoretical-conceptual emphasis, while others are more empirically oriented - but all chapters engage in an insightful dialogue between the theoretical and the empirical, in order to develop a rich, diverse and textured picture of the new challenge the world is facing and responding to. Addressing multiple levels of responses to the coronavirus, as understood in terms of, institutional and governance policies, media communication and interpretation, and the sense-making and actions of individual citizens in their everyday lives, the book brings together a diverse range of studies from across 6 continents. These chapters are connected by a common emphasis on applying critical theoretical approaches which help make sense of, and critique, the responses of states, organisations and individuals to the social phenomena emerging amid the Corona pandemic.

Cleaning and Re-Indoctrinating Nigeria to the Root (Hardcover): Dr. Charles Nwosu Cleaning and Re-Indoctrinating Nigeria to the Root (Hardcover)
Dr. Charles Nwosu
R895 Discovery Miles 8 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cleaning and Re-Indoctrinating Nigeria to the Root is a mirror of the nation where all Nigerians can see their images. It imagines Nigeria as a large portion of farmland owned by a group of families frustrated by their incapacity to plant and harvest abundantly from their travails for so many years. Most seeds/crops die before they are harvested, and few that survive are carted away by wild animals and pests. Eventually, some farmland owners, their dependents, and those who are trained to manage farms but are kept outside the project are beginning to come together to imagine options available for them as follows: (a) coming together of all trained members of the family where they adopt a motion of "change of attitude" (behavioral pattern) and sealed oath of sincerity on all future proceedings; (b) selection of all future seed/crops to be planted in the farmland; (c) screening out of all bad leaders and workers in the farm, (d) disinfecting the barren land from pesticides, screening out gravels and concrete sands, and then irrigating and fertilizing the land; (e) securing the farmland from wild animals by erecting a fence and employing new security guards; (f ) taking decisions on how crops will be harvested and what to do with the gains in areas of priorities, including distribution among the whole group of families.

Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion - Volume 5: Sociology and Monasticism. Between Innovation and Tradition (2014)... Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion - Volume 5: Sociology and Monasticism. Between Innovation and Tradition (2014) (Hardcover)
Isabelle Jonveaux, Stefania Palmisano, Enzo Pace
R5,443 Discovery Miles 54 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In contrast with the growing belief in society that traditional religious institutions are losing credibility, there has been renewed interest in monasteries going beyond what is strictly defined as religious. There are, for example, increasingly numerous requests for cooking and gardening courses as well as guided tours in monasteries, the appeal of monastic products and media interest in the subject. In parallel with a strong crisis in its recruitment, monasticism in the Western world is experiencing a period of innovation and experiments accompanied by unexpected popularity, as is evidenced by numerous films and publications. We hope that this book will deepen the understanding of the specificity of monastic life in the in the contemporary world, in a religious area, and from a sociological point of view.

Zionism and Cosmopolitanism - Franz Oppenheimer and the Dream of a Jewish Future in Germany and Palestine (Hardcover): Dekel... Zionism and Cosmopolitanism - Franz Oppenheimer and the Dream of a Jewish Future in Germany and Palestine (Hardcover)
Dekel Peretz
R3,029 Discovery Miles 30 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Franz Oppenheimer (1864-1943) was a prominent German sociologist, economist and Zionist activist. As a co-founder of academic sociology in Germany, Oppenheimer vehemently opposed the influence of antisemitism on the nascent field. As an expert on communal agricultural settlement, Oppenheimer co-edited the scientific Zionist journal Altneuland (1904-1906), which became a platform for a distinct Jewish participation within the racial and colonial discourses of Imperial Germany. By positioning Zionist aspirations within a German colonial narrative, Altneuland presented Zionism as an extension, instead of a rejection, of German patriotism. By doing so, the journal's contributors hoped to recruit new supporters and model Zionism as a source of secular Jewish identity for German Jewry. While imagining future relationships between Jews, Arabs, and German settlers in Palestine, Oppenheimer and his contemporaries also reimagined the place of Jews among European nations.

Intercultural Communication - A Critical Perspective (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Rona Tamiko Halualani Intercultural Communication - A Critical Perspective (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Rona Tamiko Halualani
R2,864 Discovery Miles 28 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intercultural Communication: A Critical Perspective is grounded in a framework based on key dimensions of power in relation to intercultural communication. A macro-micro focus is applied throughout the book to theorize the ways in which larger structures of power intermingle and reconfigure private/one-on-one encounters and relations between different cultures, both domestically and internationally. The textbook introduces students to both the hidden and visible aspects of power that constitute intercultural communication encounters and relations. The book begins by introducing the concept of intercultural communication and demonstrating how ubiquitous it is in our everyday lives. Subsequent chapters address the ties between culture, power, and intercultural communication; how powerful ideologies develop from cultural views and ways of life; and the interplay of cultural representation and speaking for or about a cultural group. Students learn the ways in which individuals and structures of power shape identity, how different structures and groups remember and forget the past, and how racialization relates to intercultural communication. The final chapters explore power dynamics with regard to globalization, intercultural relationships and desire, and our roles in intercultural communication. The second edition features new and updated research studies and illustrative examples throughout. Every chapter has a new narrative opening, introducing new identity positionalities and characters located in different cultural contexts, and connecting to the ACT Framework for Intercultural Justice to highlight agency, resistance, and structural change.

The Black Papers - An Exploration of the Dilemma within the African-American Community (Hardcover): Attallah Ali The Black Papers - An Exploration of the Dilemma within the African-American Community (Hardcover)
Attallah Ali
R614 Discovery Miles 6 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Black papers examines the Institution of racism in the United States from a historical context and addresses its culpability for the downfall of the Black community and the disconnect of its people. The author asserts that the incestuous relationship between Black leaders and the establishment has hampered the efforts of grassroots organizations to challenge effectively the systematic discrimination as related to members of the Black community. The material discussed is direct and offers a thorough assessment of racism and its devastating effect on an entire community.

Victoria Smirnova, Marie-Anne Polo De Beaulieu, Jacques Berlioz
R4,538 Discovery Miles 45 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Focusing on the theory and practice of Cistercian persuasion, the articles gathered in this volume offer historical, literary critical and anthropological perspectives on Caesarius of Heisterbach's Dialogus Miraculorum (thirteenth century), the context of its production and other texts directly or indirectly inspired by it. The exempla inserted by Caesarius into a didactic dialogue between a monk and a novice survived for many centuries and travelled across the seas thanks to rewritings and translations into vernacular languages. An accomplished example of the art of persuasion -medieval and early modern- the Dialogus Miraculorum establishes a link not only between the monasteries, the mendicant circles and other religious congregations but also between the Middle Ages and Modernity, the Old and the New World. Contributors are: Jacques Berlioz, Elisa Brilli, Daniele Dehouve, Pierre-Antoine Fabre, Marie Formarier, Jasmin Margarete Hlatky, Elena Koroleva, Nathalie Luca, Brian Patrick McGuire, Stefano Mula, Marie Anne Polo de Beaulieu, Victoria Smirnova, and Anne-Marie Turcan-Verkerk.

Graham Cassano, Rima Lunin Schultz, Jessica Payette
R5,395 Discovery Miles 53 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Eleanor Smith's Hull House Songs: The Music of Protest and Hope in Jane Addams's Chicago, the authors republish Hull House Songs (1916), together with critical commentary. Hull-House Songs contains five politically engaged compositions written by the Hull-House music educator, Eleanor Smith. The commentary that accompanies the folio includes an examination of Smith's poetic sources and musical influences; a study of Jane Addams's aesthetic theories; and a complete history of the arts at Hull-House. Through this focus upon aesthetic and cultural programs at Hull-House, the authors identify the external, and internalized, forces of domination (class position, racial identity, patriarchal disenfranchisement) that limited the work of the Hull-House women, while also recovering the sometimes hidden emancipatory possibilities of their legacy. With an afterword by Jocelyn Zelasko.

Dick Foeken, Ton Dietz, Leo Haan, Linda Johnson
R2,251 Discovery Miles 22 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A quarter of a century ago His Royal Highness Prince Claus of the Netherlands (1926-2002) formulated his statements on 'development and equity'. To honour him and his work, a professorial chair in 'development and equity' was established in 2003: the 'Prince Claus Chair'. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Chair, a conference was held in The Hague in November 2012. Each of the ten chair holders presented a paper written from his/her own perspective. These papers have been brought together in this book and show the diversity and richness of the theme. The volume also includes three essays by the promising young scholars who were judged to be the top three in a competition for the best Master's thesis in 'development, equity and citizenship'.

Heather Merrill, Lisa M. Hoffman
R2,895 Discovery Miles 28 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These twelve original essays by geographers and anthropologists offer a deep critical understanding of Allan Pred's pathbreaking and eclectic cultural Marxist approach, with a focus on his concept of "situated ignorance": the production and reproduction of power and inequality by regimes of truth through strategically deployedmisinformation, diversions, and silences. As the essays expose the cultural and material circumstances in which situated ignorance persists, they also add a previously underexplored spatial dimension to Walter Benjamin's idea of "moments of danger." The volume invokes the aftermath of the July 2011 attacks by far-right activistAnders Breivik in Norway, who ambushed a Labor Party youth gathering and bombed a government building, killing and injuring many. Breivik had publicly and forthrightly declared war against an array of liberal attitudes he saw threatening Western civilization. However, as politicians and journalists interpreted these events for mass consumption, a narrative quickly emerged that painted Breivik as a lone madman and steered the discourse away from analysis of theresurgent right-wing racisms and nationalisms in which he was immersed. The Breivik case is merely one of the most visible recent examples, say editors Heather Merrill and Lisa Hoffman, of the unchallenged production of knowledge in the public sphere. In essays that range widely in topic and setting-for example, brownfield development in China, a Holocaust memorial in Germany, an art gallery exhibit in South Africa-this volume peels back layers of "situated practices and their associated meaning and power relations." Spaces of Danger offers analytical and conceptual tools of a Predian approach to interrogate the taken-for-granted and make visible and legible that which is silenced.

Cosmopolitan Dharma - Race, Sexuality, and Gender in British Buddhism (Hardcover): Sharon Smith, Sally Munt, Andrew Yip Cosmopolitan Dharma - Race, Sexuality, and Gender in British Buddhism (Hardcover)
Sharon Smith, Sally Munt, Andrew Yip
R4,537 Discovery Miles 45 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Within Western Buddhism, practitioners are often assumed to be white and middle-class. Based in ground-breaking empirical research, Cosmopolitan Dharma: Race, Sexuality, and Gender in British Buddhism explores the stories of Buddhists from minority communities, through a rich analysis of their lived experiences. Smith, Munt and Yip explore their various contestations of dominant white and heteronormative cultures in Western Buddhism. Using cosmopolitanism as the theoretical lens, Cosmopolitan Dharma argues convincingly that the Buddhist ethos of human interconnectivity needs to be further developed to truly embrace the 'Other' of different kinds (not least Western Buddhism's own internal 'Others'). Cosmopolitan Dharma, through Buddhists' own narratives, explores how cultural politics from the ground up can offer a more inclusive philosophy and lived experience of spirituality.

Fabio Luis Barbosa Dos Santos, Cecilia Lero, Tamas Gerocs
R4,608 Discovery Miles 46 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses five cases of hatred politics on the margins of global capital: Turkey under Erdogan (assumed office in 2003), Hungary under Orban (assumed office in 2010), India under Modi (assumed office in 2014); the Philippines under Duterte (assumed office in 2016) and Brazil under Bolsonaro (assumed office in 2019). How did they come to power? What strategies of legitimation do they employ? What resistances do they face? Country case studies lay the foundation for a systematic comparison that illuminates the key dynamics of this novel political form. Analyses of their responses to the Covid-19 pandemic further shed light on their methods in a time of crisis and a chapter that considers the Trump presidency indicates how we can understand these leaderships given their pronounced counterpart in the Global North - and vice-versa. This is not a mere collection of texts commissioned from specialists, but the result of a two-year-long collective endeavor: an international taskforce to respond to a global phenomenon. Contributors are: Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos, Daniel Feldmann, Agnes Gagyi, Daniel Geary, Tamas Gerocs, Sefika Kumral, Cecilia Lero, Devika Misra, Ilhan Can Ozen and Aparna Sundar.
