This book explores the emergence and development of data in cities. It exposes how Information Communication Technology (ICT) corporations seeking to capitalize on cities developing needs for urban technologies have contributed to many of the issues we are faced with today, including urbanization, centralization of wealth and climate change. Using several case studies, the book provides examples of the, in part, detrimental effects ICT driven 'Smart City' solutions have had and will have on the human characteristics that contribute to the identity and sense of belonging innate to many of our cities. The rise in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and technologies like social media, has changed how people interact with and in cities, and Allam discusses of how these changes require planners, engineers and other urban professionals to adjust their approach. This book is more or less a companion volume of the author's book Introduction to Social Systems Engineering published by Springer in March, 2018. Since social systems engineering is a complex emerging discipline, this book will focus more on the evolution of the concept and the formation process. This is related to the book Introduction to Social Systems Engineering within the context of the author's working and study experience of around 33 years in engineering and 36 years in policy research and planning at national and regional level.
The main objective of this book is to afford readers a comprehensive view of the current state of the African American experience from the perspective of a child and youth. Oftentimes, members within and outside the African American community fail to objectively critique this culture. The worst of the culture is perpetuated due to the lack of understanding of the origins of African American history and how that history relates to the socialization process. This book also explores the generational influence in socializing African American children. Beginning with the Great Depression generation to the hip-hop and generation Y generations, the norms and values past down to African American children are examined. As significant as passing down norms and values are, most normally little stock is given by parents toward instilling a sense of honor for community environment and service to others.From society's viewpoint, most Americans feel that only African Americans can shape the development of black children and youth- - a great misconception. There are many white, Native American, Hispanic and Asian teachers involved in the development of African American children. On average, black children/youth spend an average of seven hours in school with educators of all races and ethnicities. However, very few to none of these experiences are in institutional settings where their culture is at the center of learning. Is African American culture on a path towards extinction? Are African American parents and immediate caregivers preparing their children to effectively function in a global technological age?Is African American culture on a path towards extinction? Once considered a question of an international order based on consolidated statehood and homogeneous social communities within national borders, global order has become a question of alternative political articulations, resistance movements, and cultural diversity, among others. This book first critically analyzes the conditions for the struggles of theorizing global normative order in political and IR theory. Second, to make sense of the presence of difference and possibility for global normative order in view of the simultaneous absence of first foundations, the study draws on post-foundational thinking based on the seminal work of German philosopher Martin Heidegger and Argentine political theorist Ernesto Laclau. Finally, the author develops a theoretical framework for a hauntological approach to global normative order that provides an alternative and theoretically coherent explanation for the emergence of global order. This is of interest to scholars as well as practitioners (including activists) concerned with global social relations, global political discourse, and the construction of global identity and normative order(s).
This book argues that a network interpretation of reputation advances our understanding of an essential and inescapable feature of social life and integrates many of its' varied facets. Reputation is a dispersed phenomenon that is to be found in the beliefs and assertions of an extensive number of other individuals. Reputation is part of the environment but uniquely referenced to a specific person. Discussions concerning reputation are often vague with regard to who are those others holding beliefs or making assertions about a person and thereby contributing to that person's reputation, with reference perhaps to 'people in general' or 'society at large.' A network model of reputation generates conceptual innovations that have systematic implications for such diverse disciplines as network theory and social network analysis, gossip research, person perception and cognition, social representation research, personality theory and assessment, publicity and public relations, libel law, biographical studies, and cultural history. Craik argues that reputation is not simply a central topic for the study of social life. Rather, it holds the potential to sustain an interdisciplinary field of inquiry in its own right.
In the early 1970s, the United States was much the same as in the radical '60s; Americans dying in Vietnam, anti-war demonstrations on college campuses, conflict between blacks and whites in most major cities. In predominantly white Dolton, a south Chicago suburb, busing had come to Thornridge High School. Black students from nearby Phoenix now attended school with whites from Dolton and South Holland. They were not warmly received. Then, the Thornridge basketball team started winning... Fans in black and white communities came together as Thornridge captured consecutive Illinois championships. Led by the national high school athlete of the year, Quinn Buckner, the Falcons stormed to a perfect season in 1972. No team even came close. This is their story told in their own words. This book discusses the building of comprehensive community support systems, which constitutes a key issue in social security reforms in Japan. The book comprises three parts: (I) Mapping Social Security in Japan, (II) Community-Based Integrated Care Systems in Japan, and (III) A Prospect of Community-Based Inclusive Society in Japan. The chapters in this book were composed on the basis of research into community-based integrated care systems and community-based inclusive society, conducted by members of the Association of Japanese Geographers' Study Group "Regional Issues Related to the Birthrate Decline and Population Aging." Choosing local governments with different regional characteristics, the authors conducted empirical research to uncover the characteristics of comprehensive community support systems, building processes, and challenges in the respective local governments. This book explores rurality and education in sub-Saharan Africa through a lens of social justice. The first in a two-volume project, this book explores the possibilities and constraints of rural social justice in diverse educational contexts: how should rurality be defined? How does education shape and reshape what it means to be rural? Drawing chapters from a diverse range of contributors in sub-Saharan Africa, the two volumes are underpinned by a robust social justice approach to rural schooling and its intersections with access, gender, colonialism, social mobility and dis/ability. Ultimately, these volumes reflect the need to shift conceptions of rurality from colonial and conservative stereotypes to an appreciation of rurality as locations in space and time, with their own unique attributes and opportunities. This edited volume breaks new ground and opens up new perspectives by capturing the role played by claims to authenticity in populist discourses in Brazil, India and Ukraine. By conceiving of both triumphant populism and increasing demands for authenticity as expressions of crisis, the volume seeks to satisfy the need to take a closer look at yearnings for orientation in a globalised world that is often associated with rapid social change and the disappearance of old certainties. Starting from the assumption that media play a crucial role for populist discourses of authenticity, the volume moves beyond conventional and social media by expanding its focus to media in formal education, notably school textbooks and curricula. These two particular media formats lastingly shape younger generations and thus the future. The proposed volume adopts global perspectives from three postcolonial countries that are often beyond the scope of studies dealing with populist discourses and media entanglements - insights that contribute new aspects to international scholarly debates.
