Quality Management in ART Clinics - A Practical Guide (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Fabiola Bento, Sandro Esteves, Ashok Agarwal Quality Management in ART Clinics - A Practical Guide (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Fabiola Bento, Sandro Esteves, Ashok Agarwal
R3,530 Discovery Miles 35 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the last decades, major advances have been made in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and the public demand for these procedures has increased globally. All ART clinics, from those just starting out to the well established, must employ the latest equipment and implement the best practices, while ensuring that their resources are effectively engaged to optimize patient outcomes. This is a tenet of the fiduciary role of physicians and it is increasingly recognized as a quantifiable goal regulated by formal certifications and accreditations. Quality management protocols such as those proposed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are being rapidly adopted as standards of measure. Quality Management in ART Clinics: A Practical Guide provides easily adoptable ways to implement and improve formalized quality management systems. Essential to any clinic to achieve best practices and maintenance of formal regulatory certifications, this book brings together the know-how of experienced opinion leaders operating in key areas worldwide. The book offers an overview of primary regulations in the ART field, with attention to quality management demands, and links specific requirements to practical steps for implementation. Filled with process and procedure examples, flow diagrams and administrative form templates, this book is the first of its kind, gathering the necessary elements for optimizing practice, management, and quality assurance.

Oncofertility Medical Practice - Clinical Issues and Implementation (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Clarisa Gracia, Teresa K. Woodruff Oncofertility Medical Practice - Clinical Issues and Implementation (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Clarisa Gracia, Teresa K. Woodruff
R2,883 Discovery Miles 28 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Oncofertility is a specialty that bridges the disciplines of reproductive endocrinology and infertility and oncology, with the goal of expanding the reproductive options of cancer patients. Given fertility risks associated with specific cancer treatments, as well as the improved long-term survival made possible by these therapies, there has been growing interest in expanding reproductive options for cancer patients. Indeed, both cancer survivors and the medical community have acknowledged the importance of patient counseling and the pursuit of fertility preservation options prior to starting cancer treatment. Oncofertility Medical Practice: Clinical Issues and Implementation is the third in a series of timely and indispensable books on fertility preservation for cancer patients-the first one focused on advances in basic science research and the second one offered ethical, legal, and social perspectives on the theme. This book elucidates the latest practices and emerging treatments in oncofertility and provides necessary information on the successes, risks, and limitations of fertility preserving technologies. Authoritative and insightful, written by an impressive multi-disciplinary cadre of specialists, this book is a valuable up-to-date resource for all those practicing in this demanding field. "This excellent text is an invaluable resource and a "must read" for clinicians and researchers interested in Oncofertility. The editors and authors need to be congratulated for their fine work." Roger A. Lobo, MD, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Columbia University and Past President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine

Estrogen Effects in Psychiatric Disorders (Paperback, 2005 ed.): Niels Bergemann, Anita Riecher-Roessler Estrogen Effects in Psychiatric Disorders (Paperback, 2005 ed.)
Niels Bergemann, Anita Riecher-Roessler
R2,668 Discovery Miles 26 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A number of studies, mostly focusing on estrogen replacement therapy in women, have reported beneficial actions of these hormones on various neurobiological and neuropathological parameters in health and disease. Recent research has focused on gender differences and there is increasing evidence that estrogens exert protective effects in schizophrenia. Hormonal fluctuations or lack of estrogen may increase the risk of depression among vulnerable women. Treatment of depression with estrogen may stabilize and restore disrupted homeostasis - as during post-partum, premenstrual, or perimenopausal conditions - and act as a psychomodulator to offset vulnerability to dysphoric mood when estrogen levels are significantly decreased, as in the case of postmenopausal women. Studies on the effect of estrogens on Alzheimer's Disease are still rather controversial, they do, however, facilitate the hypothesis that estrogens may have a modifying effect on the onset and course of AD, at least in subgroups of patients.

R4,703 Discovery Miles 47 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Although phosphorylation of proteins on tyrosine is relatively rare compared to phosphorylation on serine or threonine residues, the past two decades of research into PTP function have led to a great appreciation of the critical role PTPs have in regulating basic cellular processes. Among these important roles is the regulation of cellular signaling pathways related to metabolism. This volume contains chapters which highlight many aspects of PTP function in the context of metabolism. Given the growing obesity and diabetes epidemics in the United States and throughout the world, the desire to identify possible therapeutic targets for treatment of these diseases is a high priority. In many ways, PTPs may be attractive drug targets since they are amenable to targeting with small molecules; however many challenges abound in making PTP inhibitors.

Kisspeptin Signaling in Reproductive Biology (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Alexander S. Kauffman, Jeremy T. Smith Kisspeptin Signaling in Reproductive Biology (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Alexander S. Kauffman, Jeremy T. Smith
R6,492 Discovery Miles 64 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Kisspeptin has been shown to be both necessary and sufficient for activation of the reproductive axis, during puberty and later in adulthood. This makes kisspeptin a fundamental component of the reproductive axis. Kisspeptin has been deemed the single most potent stimulator of GnRH neurons yet known. The importance of kisspeptin has been documented in humans as well as non-human animal models, ranging from monkeys, sheep, and rodents to numerous fish species, thus signifying a highly conserved nature of its reproductive function. Importantly, kisspeptin neurons seem to mediate many of the regulatory effects of other signals, whether they are metabolic, circadian, hormonal, or stress. This places kisspeptin neurons in a unique position to be key nodal points and conduits for conveying numerous endogenous and exogenous signals to the reproductive axis.

Cytology of the Mediastinum and Gut Via Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Aspiration (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Ricardo H. Bardales Cytology of the Mediastinum and Gut Via Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Aspiration (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Ricardo H. Bardales
R1,664 Discovery Miles 16 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This text provides a comprehensive review of the cytology of disease processes of the mediastinum and mediastinal lymph nodes with emphasis in lung and gut nodal cancer staging in specimens obtained by EUS-FNA. This book also reviews the cytology of intramural masses of the gastrointestinal tract using a pattern-based diagnostic approach. The cytomorphology of lesions obtained by EUS-FNA is peculiar by the common presence in the obtained sample of normal luminal gastrointestinal contents, and the cytopathologist should be familiar with this pattern not often seen when the sampling is done by percutaneous approach. Technical considerations pertaining to the operator performing the procedure as well as to the cytopathologist, with emphasis on rapid on-site interpretation are also covered. Most lesions described in the book also have endoscopic US image correlation. Cytology of the Mediastinum and Gut is a useful and practical guide for cytological interpretation and differential diagnosis of lesions obtained by EUS-FNA of mediastinum and gut. All chapters are written by experts with many years of experience in the field and contain the cytology, immuno-profile, molecular profile, and ultrasound features of the masses described.

Investigations into the mechanisms of spennatogenesis, sperm matura tion and fertilization provide the basis of our understanding of male re productive physiology. Since in recent years molecular and cellular en docrinology has provided particularly important contributions to our knowledge, the European Workshops on Molecular and Celluar Endo crinology of the Testis, held regularly during even years since 1980, have become a prominent forum for researchers in the field to discuss recent findings and exchange new ideas. The most recent of these Testis Workshops, the 7th, was held on May 5 - 10, 1992 at Castle Elmau in the Bavarian Alps. The main lectures of this Workshops form the core of this book. In order to provide a broader view of the current status of male re production research, this volume also contains the proceedings of the Schering Foundation Workshop on "Basic Mechanisms of Reproduc tion and Male Fertility Control" which was held in Berlin on October 31 to November 2, 1991. The topics of the two meetings were planned to complement each other. By combining the proceedings of both workshops, it became possible to produce a book that covers a wide spectrum of current highlights in male reproduction research and pro vides the reader with an up-to-date review of the field. The timeliness of the book is emphasized by the fact that it was al ready available when the 7th European Testis Workshop took place.

Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes - From Science to Therapy (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Derek Leroith Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes - From Science to Therapy (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Derek Leroith
R2,874 Discovery Miles 28 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is a world-wide epidemic on obesity. This epidemic is driving the immense proportions of Type 2 diabetes across the globe. While there are numerous therapies for treating Type 2 diabetes, the most effective therapy is prevention. Prevention of Type 2 diabetes can be achieved properly by simultaneous prevention of obesity. Prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome, is the period between simple obesity and diabetes, and this critical period needs to be identified in a more consistent and systematic manner by clinicians worldwide. Clinical trials have indicated that diabetes prevention can be achieved by lifestyle changes and also by certain medications, though none are yet approved for use in prevention. On the other hand, there are funding agencies such as the NIH, CDC, and State Institutions that are interested in studying the prevention paradigms in different communities and ethnic minorities who are most prone to this epidemic. For these reasons, this title by renowned physician-scientist Derek LeRoith is both timely and vitally important for academic physicians, practitioners, allied health care providers, analysts, community activists, and all others interested in this increasing epidemic. This book provides a unique and comprehensive synthesis of the prevention and early diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, focusing on identifying risk factors and then moving into topics that address how to prevent their progression to full-blown diabetes. The difficult task of changing patients' behavior is given special emphasis. The chapters in this practical volume are written by a wide range of international experts, reflecting the editor's distinguished, internationally renowned career. The volume is organized in eight sections: an introduction to the overall issue of prevention, definitions of values based on ADA guidelines, pathophysiology, discussion of a range of interventional trials regarding prevention, and an overview of state-of-the-art clinical management approaches. Comprehensive and timely, Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes: From Science to Therapy is an essential reference for those treating and researching Type 2 Diabetes.

Since 1948, hydrocortisone (cortisol), the principal glucocorticoid (GC) of the human adrenal cortex has been successfully used at phar- macological concentrations for the suppression of clinical manifesta- tions of rheumatoid arthritis. Numerous compounds with GC activity have also been developed and used. Fifty years after their initial clinical use, GCs are still the most im- portant and frequently prescribed class of anti-inflammatory drugs for various inflammatory disorders. They are administered either orally, parenterally (intravenous, intramuscular, intrathecal), or topically (cu- taneous, intranasal, pulmonic, rectal). Despite the many beneficial ef- fects of GCs, they also have their limitations and disadvantages that occur with varying prevalence on different organs and after different durations of therapy. These side-effects can range in severity from cos- metic (e.g. telangiectasias, hypertrichosis) to seriously disabling (e.g. induction of glaucoma, diabetes, osteoporosis) or even life-threatening disorders (e.g. gastric haemorrhage). These adverse effects of GCs se- riously handicap their successful use as anti-inflammatory agents. There is therefore a strong need for the development of substances with the anti-inflammatory potency of classical GCs but with reduced side-effects.

James C. Yao, Paulo M Hoff, Ana O. Hoff
R2,875 Discovery Miles 28 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

New research has shown that neuroendocrine tumors are more common than previously thought. Progress in our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of these not-so-rare cancers has resulted in renewed interest in developinginnovative therapeutic options. In particular, novel molecular targeted agents have been shown to have significant anti-tumor activity, and integration of these therapies has led to critical advances in management.

In this volume, an outstanding group of the world s leaders in the field have assembled to convey their knowledge of the epidemiology, biology, and management of allthemajor types of neuroendocrine tumors. The book takes a multi-modality approach to understanding disease processes and therapeutics, including chapters on medical and surgical treatment as well as a chapter devoted to imaging. Throughout, the authors emphasize recent advances in our understanding of molecular biology and the subsequent emerging therapeutic options."
