Develop a better understanding of what CFS/CFIDS sufferers are
going through! In the 1980s, a strange emerging epidemic baffled
doctors in Incline Village, Nevada. Dismissed by the media as "The
Yuppie Flu," Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS)
turned out to be neither a faddish disease of the wealthy nor a
passing trend, but rather a growing worldwide epidemic of
devastating proportions. In the voices of a South African
journalist, a former marathon runner, a teenage girl, a public
health activist living on the edge of race and gender, a cancer
patient neglected by doctors because of disdain for her chronic
illness, and a theologian relearning the art of spiritual empathy,
the people who share their stories in Stricken: Voices from the
Hidden Epidemic of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome defy cultural
stereotypes and explore the complex social and political dynamics
of this hidden epidemic. Through their distinct points of view, we
feel the grief and hope of those stricken with CFIDS and learn of
the complex nature of this misunderstood disorder. These are
compelling stories about a quiet and baffling epidemic. The first
American anthology to contain stories from a diverse range of
people with CFIDS, Stricken offers an intimate look at the
political and social issues surrounding CFIDS, as told by those who
are living through this ordeal. Stricken addresses several issues,
such as: why some doctors still do not believe CFIDS is real how
the disease is mocked in the media myths about this illness the
personal fight for medical or public recognition the skepticism and
hope that is felt by the ever-growing number of CFIDS sufferers
Stricken confronts fascinating CFIDS issues such as the Kevorkian
suicides, accusations of Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy, Gulf War
Syndrome, the role of storytelling in a memory-impaired patient
movement, and the feasibility of mass activism in a disabled
population. With contributions from Pulitzer-prize nominated writer
Susan Griffin, renowned health writer and radio host Gary Null,
well-known feminist activist Joan Nestle, and award-winning poet
and essayist Floyd Skloot, Stricken is an eloquent testament to the
heroism, defiance, and diversity of the CFIDS community.
This is an attempt to address the ethical issues raised by mental
illness and its treatment by focusing on the question of autonomy.
The mentally ill may be regarded as non-autonomous by virtue of
irrationality, which may result in treatment models which may deny
them a voice. As a counter to this, some have moved to the other
extreme and argued that the mentally ill must be regarded as fully
autonomous in all circumstances, and consequently that all their
wishes regarding treatment must be respected. This book examines
the ethical consequences of such simplistic approaches approaches
towards autonomy and mental illness, and considers the ethical
issues raised by specific forms of treatment. It is suggested in
conclusion that improvement in the care and treatment of the
mentally ill requires not only a fundamental change in social
attitudes but also less impoverished conception of autonomy than
some of those currently employed.

"You know, Dr. Dan, that kid is from my planet." With in-depth
descriptions of LEGO (R)-based therapy in action, this book
explains how and why it helps to promote the development of social
skills for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and
related conditions. Written by Daniel B. LeGoff, who pioneered the
approach, this book comprises a series of case histories of
children who participated in LEGO (R) therapy. It traces the
development of the evidence-based approach, shares the clinical
insights gained along the way and highlights the principles which
should be at the core of all effective treatment and educational
strategies for children with ASDs. The case histories have real
practical value for those working with children with ASDs and also
help to demonstrate the subtleties of the adult facilitation role
for professionals running sessions.

Noncommunicable Diseases: A Compendium introduces readers to
noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) - what they are, their burden,
their determinants and how they can be prevented and controlled.
Focusing on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic
respiratory disease and their five shared main risk factors
(tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical
inactivity and air pollution) as defined by the United Nations,
this book provides a synopsis of one of the world's biggest
challenges of the 21st century. NCDs prematurely claim the lives of
millions of people across the world every year, with untold
suffering to hundreds of millions more, trapping many people in
poverty and curtailing economic growth and sustainable development.
While resources between and within countries largely differ, the
key principles of surveillance, prevention and management apply to
all countries, as does the need to focus resources on the most
cost-effective and affordable interventions and the need for strong
political will, sufficient resources, and sustained and broad
partnerships. This compendium consists of 59 short and accessible
chapters in six sections: (i) describing and measuring the burden
and impact of NCDs; (ii) the burden, epidemiology and priority
interventions for individual NCDs; (iii) social determinants and
risk factors for NCDs and priority interventions; (iv) global
policy; (v) cross-cutting issues; and (vi) stakeholder action.
Drawing on the expertise of a large and diverse team of
internationally renowned policy and academic experts, the book
describes the key epidemiologic features of NCDs and evidence-based
interventions in a concise manner that will be useful for
policymakers across all parts of society, as well as for public
health and clinical practitioners.
Much of clinical psychology relies upon cognitive behavior therapy
to treat clinical disorders via attempting to change thinking and
feeling in order to change behavior. Functional approaches differ
in that they focus on context and the environmental influence on
behavior, thoughts, and feelings. This second edition of Functional
Analysis in Clinical Treatment updates the material in keeping with
DSM-5 and ICD-10 and provides 40% new information, including
updated literature reviews, greater detail in the functional
analysis/assessment sections of each chapter, two new chapters on
autism spectrum disorders and chronic health problems, and examples
of worked assessments, such as interview transcripts, ABC charts,
and observational data.

Do you beat yourself up after making a mistake? Do you treat
yourself worse than you would a good friend? If these questions
strike a chord, it's likely that you contend with unhealthy
self-criticism. This mental habit is the cause of so much emotional
suffering, and lies at the root of most of the problems that
psychotherapists and counsellors encounter. In Everyone's a Critic,
psychotherapist Julia Bueno shares seven case studies, inspired by
her practice. They explore some of the reasons why we learn to turn
against ourselves, encourage readers to be more curious about their
self-critic, and inspire a practice of greater self-compassion
instead. Praise for Everyone's a Critic: 'Julia Bueno explores such
an important topic, and one that holds so many people back: our
inner critic. This book discusses where it may come from and,
through case studies, how we can rewrite the script. Gently
enquiring, authoritative and reassuring.' Annalisa Barbieri,
Guardian 'A quiet revelation: an investigation into the lacerating
self-criticism many of us unleash upon ourselves without even being
aware of it. One thinks, feels and learns. A compelling and
important book.' Hannah Betts] 'This is most certainly not a
self-help book to beat yourself up with. Julia Bueno explains how
self-criticism affects many of us and digs far deeper than the
usual social-media-blaming... It's an important, timely book that
many will benefit from reading and acting upon.' Louise Chunn,
founder of therapist-matching site Welldoing 'If you've ever felt
that little voice - or a very loud one - at the back of your mind
telling you you're no good, Julia Bueno's book is the ideal way to
answer back.' Harry Mount, editor of the Oldie
Using Voice and Movement in Therapy is a practical and imaginative
guide to the way in which physical movement and the expressive use
of the voice can facilitate therapy. Paul Newham examines how
massage, manipulation and dance, combined with vocal expression,
can alleviate certain emotional, psychosomatic and psychological
symptoms. His book provides practical support for non-clinical
professionals, working as group leaders and facilitators, who aim
to incorporate singing and vocal expression into their working
method as a means to initiate social interaction and
self-empowerment. The author draws on his own professional
experience to describe therapeutic techniques and exercises which
he has found to be effective, illustrating these with case studies.
In particular, he focuses on the benefits of voicework for use with
some of the most frequently occurring emotional, psychological and
psychosomatic difficulties experienced by people in expressive
therapy. This is the first of three volumes which will rectify the
dearth of practical information on the therapeutic use of vocal
expression within psychotherapy, arts therapies and group process.
The three books will form an exploration of how singing and vocal
sound-making can contribute to an artistically orientated
psychotherapeutic process, and will be a source of inspiration for
practitioners.

Bariatric Surgery: Managing Your Mind and Your Weight aims to help
those who are considering bariatric surgery develop a psychological
understanding of their eating behaviour and the changes needed in
order to make surgery successful. It is also a resource for those
who have undergone surgery to help them adapt to the physical,
psychological and relationship adjustments that occur. Whilst the
benefits of bariatric surgery are significant, the psychological
challenges it presents for patients have been overlooked. This book
will help patients develop a realistic view of bariatric surgery
and the changes required. It incorporates the real-life experiences
of people who have had bariatric surgery, showing how they have
responded to the psychological and behavioural changes after
surgery, and also features helpful psychoeducation, exercises and
strategies to facilitate reflection and learning. Living with
Bariatric Surgery will be an essential guide for anyone
considering, preparing for or recovering from bariatric surgery, as
well as health professionals working with these clients.
This book is intended to help decision-makers use, assess and
appraise the evidence that underpins decisions about the use of
therapeutic interventions. It will inform decision-makers about the
nature of evidence, the strengths and weaknesses of the available
approaches, and how these can be most effectively distilled for the
purpose of reaching reliable conclusions. It aims to encourage
decision-makers to base their judgements about the use of
therapeutic interventions on an informed appraisal of the totality
of the evidence base. Is it reliable? Is it generalisable beyond
the context of the environment in which the primary research has
been conducted? Do the intervention's benefits outweigh its harms?
Is it cost effective as well as clinically effective? Is it,
indeed, fit-for-purpose? Ultimately, good judgement is at the heart
of decision-making in therapeutics. An invaluable text for all
physicians, pharmacists, nurses, health commissioners and
purchasers and indeed anyone having to make decisions concerning
evidence-based therapeutics.
The Hickey Multisensory Language Course has become a classic. It is
widely used throughout the UK by teachers working with dyslexic
learners of all ages, and is a core text for university courses
directed at specialist teachers. Moreover, it has exerted a
powerful influence on approaches to teaching literacy skills,
including the National Literacy Strategy Framework for teaching.
Children now have an entitlement to access to the National
Curriculum. Special educational needs, including dyslexia, must be
identified, assessed, and addressed, mostly within an inclusive
mainstream classroom. Special programmes such as the Hickey are
implemented as part of an Individual Education Plan, and need to be
linked to the Literacy Hour. The Third edition makes explicit links
with current classroom organisation and gives examples of
appropriate IEPs, and suggestions for use of ICT. To address the
need for specific training in phonological awareness, the Hickey
Lesson Plan has been modified, and a chapter added which includes
specific games and activities to develop phonological awareness,
and to develop the use of strategies in reading a range of whole
texts.
This book explores alternative explanations of stem cell
plasticity. It discusses a presence of potential pluripotent stem
cells in adult tissues, paracrine effects of stem cell therapies,
involvement of exosomes and microparticles into observed phenomena
as well as present current clinical results with adult stem cell
therapies in different clinical settings. The field of regenerative
medicine is searching for stem cells that can be safely and
efficiently employed for regeneration of damaged organs. The
concept proposed a few years ago - that adult stem cells are
plastic and may extensively transdifferentiate into cells from
different germ layers - lacks solid experimental support. As a
result, the concept of stem cell plasticity, or
transdifferentiation, has been challenged, and some positive
effects of stem cell therapies have been explained by alternative
mechanisms. Adult Stem Cell Therapies is an important addition to
the Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine series.

Effective parenting is essential to the success of children with
ADHD. At the same time, difficult child behavior contributes to
parenting stress and often evokes harsh responses from caregivers,
leading to increasing problems over time. What makes this process
even more challenging is that ADHD and related problems-like
executive functioning deficits, emotion dysregulation, and
depression-run in families. It is difficult for parents to support
a child's learning and social environment if they themselves
struggle with disorganization, low motivation, poor planning, and
other executive functioning difficulties. Supporting Caregivers of
Children with ADHD integrates behavioral, cognitive, and
emotion-focused intervention components into straightforward
treatment for both parents and children. Sessions included in this
therapist guide incorporate group discussion, modeling, role play,
and home exercises that involve practicing behavioral parenting
techniques and/or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) skills. With
the use of this manual, clinicians will gain the expertise to guide
parents in effectively supporting their children's behavioral and
emotional regulation by creating and maintaining a calm and
consistent home environment.
