The essential guide to self-love that every black woman needs; you can create the life you deserve - no matter what you've been told in the past. After a lifetime of never truly relating to personal development experts because of the colour of her skin, Trey Anthony has written the book she needed to read as a black, gay woman trying to navigate a world filled with unique challenges that often acts like she doesn't exist. On the outside Trey Anthony was the overachieving, reliable, strong black woman she was raised to be, but on the inside the pressure of sacrificing her own needs to please others was building. When her grandmother and mother raised her strong, they also unknowingly taught her that self-love and expressing emotions was weak, creating an unhealthy dynamic that had Trey facing burnout and rock bottom. In Black Girl in Love (with Herself), Trey breaks down the lessons and tools that she used to heal her life, including how to: - set clear and healthy boundaries - even with the people who raised you - quit being the family ATM - figure out who is a real friend, and who is just there for parties and gossip - confront micro-aggressions at work without missing a beat - forget who black women are 'supposed' to be - and fall in love with yourself

Fear in Contemporary Society and its Consequences "A delightfully fearless and deeply sensitive examination of that most primal and formative human experience." Alan Burdick, author of Why Time Flies: A Mostly Scientific Investigation #1 New Release in Evolutionary Psychology and Buddhism For anyone suffering from global pandemic anxiety caused by the new coronavirus, comes an exploration of one of the most powerful and primitive human emotions. A history and culture of fear. Over the last five hundred years, life for the average human being has changed dramatically plagues no longer routinely wipe out entire families, and we no longer empty our chamber pots into the street. But, progress has shown that no matter how many dangers we neutralize, new ones emerge. Why? Because our level of fear remains constant. Fear in contemporary society. For years, Dr. Frank Faranda studied a state of fearfulness in his patients an evolutionary state that relentlessly drove them toward avoidance, alienation, hypercriticism, hyper-control, and eventually, depression and anxiety. He began to wonder what they were afraid of, and how embedded these fears might be in contemporary society. This book aims to break us free from what he found. Fear not. Faranda's Fear Paradox is simple even though fear has a prime directive to keep us safe and comfortable, it has grown into the single greatest threat to humanity and collective survival. As a consequence, fear is embedded in our culture, creating new dangers and inciting isolation. With rising anxiety levels, now is the time to shine a light on our deepest fears and examine the society that fear is creating. But fear not inside, you'll learn about: The fear of pain and the fear of the unknown How fear has driven progress in the West The price paid to eradicate fear Read books like Fear, The Culture of Fear, or The Science of Fear? Then The Fear Paradox is your next read. Come on, what are you afraid of?
As Roseann Sdoia waited to watch her friend cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon in 2013, she had no idea her life was about to change-that in a matter of minutes she would look up from the sidewalk, burned and deaf, staring at her detached foot, screaming for help amid the smoke and blood. In the chaos of the minutes that followed, three people would enter Roseann's life and change it forever. The first was Shores Salter, a college student who, when the bomb went off, instinctively ran into the smoke while his friends ran away. He found Roseann lying on the sidewalk and, using a belt as a tourniquet, literally saved her life that day. Then, Boston police officer Shana Cottone arrived on the scene and began screaming desperately at passing ambulances, all full, before finally commandeering an empty paddy wagon. Just then a giant appeared, in the form of Boston firefighter Mike Materia, who carefully lifted her into the fetid paddy wagon. He climbed in and held her burned hand all the way to the hospital. Since that day, he hasn't left her side, and today they are planning their life together. Perfect Strangers is about recovery, about choosing joy and human connection over anger and resentment, and most of all, it's about an unlikely but enduring friendship that grew out of the tragedy of Boston's worst day.

At one time, the use of corporal punishment by parents in child-rearing was considered normal, but in the second half of the nineteenth century this begin to change, in Quebec as well as the rest of the Western world. It was during this period that the extent of ill-treatment inflicted on childrenatreatment once excused as good child-rearing practiceawas discovered. This book analyzes both the advice provided to parents and the different forms of child abuse within families. Cliche derives her information from family magazines, reports and advice columns in newspapers, people's life stories, the records of the Montreal Juvenile Court, and even comic strips. Two dates are given particular focus: 1920, with the trial of the parents of Aurore Gagnon, which sensitized the public to the phenomenon of "child martyrs;" and 1940, with the advent of the New Education movement, which was based on psychology rather than strict discipline and religious doctrine. There has always been child abuse. What has changed is society's sensitivity to it. That is why defenders of children's rights call for the repeal of Section 43 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which authorizes "reasonable" corporal punishment. Abuse or Punishment? considers not only the history of violence towards children in Quebec but the history of public perception of this violence and what it means for the rest of Canada.

Just when you thought you've heard it all-"Parenting from the Heart" offers a new and different, refreshing approach to parenting. This easy-to-understand, down-to-earth book moves beyond parenting theories and techniques to get to the heart of parenting. If parents know how to look within their hearts to find the answers they need, parenting techniques are not necessary. If parents know how to find a loving connection with their children at most times, discipline and consequences are rarely necessary. All parents have it within them to bring out the best in their children. Approaching parents in this way makes parenting a true pleasure instead of the battle and chore it often becomes. Many so-called experts say that raising kids is the toughest job any of us will ever do, but it does not have to be that way. It can be the most joyful thing any of us will ever do. "Parenting from the Heart" is a must resource for anyone who cares about parenting and raising children. About the Author: |
