This book addresses epistemological and political aspects of the
discursive pursuit of authenticity and various ways in which the
inauthentic is devalued and marginalized. The essays critically
analyze various means by which the authentic is searched for,
staged, admired, dismissed, replicated or simply taken for granted.
What is at work in such discursive practices is a poetics of
imitation. This is seen as a paradoxical kind of poetics which
renounces the authenticity of the created text for the sake of its
semi-religious offering to the origin. Such a divination of the
Authentic posits translation as an idolatrous act accompanied by a
suspicion of its simultaneously being iconoclastic.
This book offers an interdisciplinary rethinking of the role of
translation in the perception and reception of cultural texts. It
also discusses human everyday discursive practices at the time of
fluctuation of meanings and the decline of the authentic. The
authors focus critically on the phenomenon of imitative replacement
by all sorts of simulacra. The essays are addressed to literary and
translation scholars as well as to all those interested in finding
keys to understating the complex relationship between languages and
cultures.
"Making Out in Japanese" is a fun, accessible and thorough Japanese
phrase book and guide to the Japanese language as it's really
spoken.
"Sugoku suki Mata aeru?"--(I'm crazy about you Shall we meet
again?) Answer this correctly in Japanese and you may be going on a
hot date. Incorrectly, and you could be hurting someone's feelings
or getting a "slap " Japanese classes and textbooks tend to spend a
lot of time rehearsing for the same fictitious scenarios but
chances are while in Japan you will spend a lot more time trying to
make new friends or start new romances--something you may not be
prepared for.
If you are a student, businessman or tourist traveling to Japan and
would like to have an authentic and meaningful experience, the key
is being able to speak like a local. This friendly and easy-to-use
Japanese phrasebook makes this possible. "Making Out in Japanese"
has been updated and expanded to be even more helpful as a guide to
modern colloquial Japanese for use in everyday informal
interactions--giving access to the sort of catchy Japanese
expressions that aren't covered in traditional language materials.
As well as the Romanized forms ("romanji"), each expression is now
given in authentic Japanese script ("kanji and kana" with
"furigana" pronunciation clues), so that in the case of
difficulties the book can be shown to the person the user is trying
to communicate with.
This Japanese phrasebook includes: A guide to pronouncing Japanese
words correctly. Explanations of basic Japanese grammar, such as,
intonation, word stress, and particles. A guide to male and female
usage. Romanized forms of words and phrases ("romanji"). Complete
Japanese translations including Japanese characters ("kanji") and
the Japanese alphabet ("kana"). Useful and interesting notes on
Japanese language and culture. Lots of colorful, fun and useful
expressions not covered in other phrasebooks.
Titles in this unique series of bestselling phrase books include:
"Making Out in Chinese, Making Out in Indonesian, Making Out in
Thai, Making Out in Korean, Making Out in Hindi, Making Out in
Japanese, Making Out in Vietnamese, Making Out in Burmese, Making
Out in Tagalog, Making Out in Hindi, Making Out in Arabic, Making
Out in English, More Making Out in Korean, and More Making Out in

Offering a practical theory for why people make decisions about
revealing and concealing private information. Boundaries of Privacy
taps into everyday problems in our personal relationships, our
health concerns, and our work to investigate the way we manage our
private lives. Petronio argues that in addition to owning our own
private information, we also take on the responsibility of guarding
other people's private information when it is put into our trust.
This can often lead to betrayal, errors in judgment, deception,
gossip, and privacy dilemmas. Petronio's book serves as a guide to
understanding why certain decisions about privacy succeed while
others fail.

Dante's unfinished work, the Convivio, his first book written in
exile, is often overlooked. This volume, instead of promoting the
idea that Dante's career evolved continuously from the youthful
Vita nova through to the Commedia, takes the Convivio as Dante's
first attempt to reassemble and reshape the remains of his
Florentine past - from his love poetry to his philosophical
readings - in order to construct a new way of defining himself as a
writer after 1302. Contributors to the volume explore the Convivio
from a variety of different angles, including the issue of genre,
the relationship between poetry and prose and Dante's concept of
the reader, as well as examining the importance of ideas such as
nobility, the vernacular and Roman law.
