Kawsay Vida is a course book and interactive multimedia program for the teaching and learning of the Quechua language from beginner to advanced levels. The course book is based on contemporary Bolivian Quechua, while the multimedia program contains a section on Bolivian Quechua (beginner to intermediate levels) and a section on southern Peruvian Quechua (advanced level). The book provides a practical introduction to spoken Quechua through the medium of English, while the multimedia program offers a choice of English or Spanish as the medium of instruction. The video clips introduce us to Quechua speakers in the valleys of Northern Potosà (Bolivia) and Cuzco (Peru), giving a sense of immediacy that the printed page cannot achieve, and highlighting the social and cultural settings in which the language is spoken. The multimedia program is available for both PC and Macintosh platforms. The book contains twenty-two units of study. As students work through these, cross-references take them to relevant sections of the multimedia program. The Bolivian and Peruvian Quechua sections of the multimedia program are divided into thematically and grammatically ordered modules, which introduce users to different aspects of Andean life, while progressing language learning in a structured way. Users engage with the audio, video, and visual material contained in the program through a range of interactive exercises, which reinforce listening and comprehension skills. Once familiarity with the language is acquired, the multimedia program may be used independently from the book. Â

This book approaches the structure of English from a form-function perspective that is both theoretical and practical. It asks learners to consider meaning, structure and use, in contrast to many grammars that focus on structure, sometimes to the exclusion of use and even meaning. The book presents an extended introduction to areas of grammar that many would see as indispensable, such as participial and infinitive phrases. The analysis is largely achieved through form-function tree diagramming and extends the structure to include finite and nonfinite predicates.

This collection brings together research on learning-oriented language assessment from scholars working across geographic and educational contexts, highlighting the opportunities of assessment practices which seek to better align assessment and learning tasks and support effective learning. The volume begins by introducing learning-oriented assessment (LOA) and the context around its growing popularity, especially in accountability-oriented settings which favor summative large-scale tests. The first part of the book charts the development of LOA's theoretical and conceptual underpinnings, outlining the ways in which they have been informed by theories of learning and key elements. The second part demonstrates LOA in practice, drawing on examples from different countries and instructional settings to explore such topics as the role of technology in LOA and developing feedback materials based around LOA principles and developed for core literacy skills. Offering a holistic view of learning-oriented assessment and the real-world affordances and challenges of its implementation, this book is key reading for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in language testing and assessment, TESOL, and language education.

The Oxford Reader offers a renewed emphasis on more traditional forms of literacy-sustained reading, writing, and thinking-which comes at a particularly urgent moment. In a world of alternative facts and fake news, the importance of a well and deeply educated citizenry is reinvigorated. Even within the multimodal classroom, many instructors have continued to introduce (or reintroduce) the modes to employ readings that direct students to read carefully, to respond and argue cogently and accountably, and to become nimble and ready writers, no matter what they're writing. The Oxford Reader distinguishes itself by offering not only an expected mix of classic and contemporary selections, but also a variety of genres to emphasize nonfiction, without excluding some literary works and prominent pieces from blogs and other online sources. This spectrum of voices, genres, and time periods illustrate that what is considered contemporary thinking often has its roots elsewhere.
This collection showcases the latest innovations in research on the application of corpora and corpus-based methods in ESP/EAP writing instruction and the many ways in which corpora can be successfully and practically integrated in ESP/EAP programmes. While previous work has discussed the successful use of corpora in teaching writing in the areas of ESP/EAP, this book is the first of its kind to bring the most up-to-date research on the topic together in one place. The volume's unique structure mirrors the key stages of the writing instruction process, from preparation to exploitation to analysis. The book begins by showing how corpora can be used to prepare materials, moving into an exploration of how students in ESP/EAP programmes use corpora in practice, before bringing the discussion full circle to the ways in which corpus-based approaches might be implemented to analyse ESP/EAP student writing. This approach presents readers with insights into how corpora can be effectively integrated into ESP/EAP writing instruction at every step of the process and opens the way for future areas of study. This book will be of particular interest to students and researchers in applied corpus linguistics, English for Specific Purposes, and English for Academic Purposes, as well as active practitioners in ESP/EAP writing instruction.
