In June 1978, 11 years after he quit Grand Prix motorcycle racing,
Mike Hailwood returned to the Isle of Man TT races, probably the
most prestigious, and certainly the most demanding, road race in
the world. On a privately entered V-twin Ducati he won the Formula
One race, beating the works Hondas of Phil Read and the late John
Williams, and breaking the lap and race records. It may have seemed
a fluke; it was certainly a fairy tale that continued into 1979,
when he was fifth in the Formula One race, despite losing top gear
and his battery, first in the Senior, and second by only 3.4
seconds in the Classic - probably the finest and closest-fought
race the Island has ever seen, Hailwood proved, if anyone doubted,
that he was still the greatest motorcycle racer of all time. This
book, written by his manager and friend, Ted Macauley, is the
account of his dramatic comeback, from the original wild idea to
his final race. More than this, though, it is a study of a
remarkable man in a remarkable world, and of the races, the
machines, and the men who ride them.
The motorcycle can lay claim as the most influential form of
mobility becoming the embodiment of liberation and rebellion; never
more so than in the 50s and 60s with the era of rockers, ton-up
boys, the 59 Club and cafe racing. My Cool Motorcycle celebrates a
love affair with motorcycles and the strong culture within the
tight-knit community. Explore how the origins of the era of
motorcycle subculture have lived on, through the fashions and
spin-off cultures that this versatile machine has spawned. Looking
back across a hundred years of the motorcycle, My Cool Motorcycle
charts iconic makes and sought-after classics, along with a
cross-section of passionate owners. Chapters include: It's a
Keeper: Exploring the irreplaceable and sentimental bond that
determines a motorcycle as being 'a keeper' whether its a cherished
motorcycle being handed down generations, or a garage find sure to
generate your own curiosity for local garages. The Wider Picture:
Looking beyond stories of traditional ownership and exploring the
motivations of individuals who take motorcycling one stage further.
Diversity: Consider how some people choose to push aside conformity
and extend the boundaries of their chosen path, adapting their
persona and how they choose to live their life through fashion,
hobbies, culture and, crucially, motorcycle ownership.
Retrospective: The 1960s saw a dramatic shift in motorcycle
ownership and the onset of the 1970s saw the biggest boom in
motorcycle sales with everyone seemingly opting to take to the
roads. This chapter is an opportunity to take a retrospective look
at the exciting motorcycles indicative to this era of change.

dirt riding (and much street riding) shares the same basic skill
set."How to Ride Off-Road Motorcycles" schools the reader in all
the skills necessary to ride safely and quickly off-road. Chapters
cover the basics, such as body position, turning, braking, and
throttle control, then proceed to advanced techniques, such as
sliding, jumps, wheelies, hill-climbing, and more.If you've ever
wanted to try dirt riding or if you're an experienced rider looking
to sharpen your skill set, "How to Ride Off-Road Motorcycles "is a
perfect riding coach.
This charming book, packed with unique artwork and engaging
photographs, celebrates scooter mania. In a feast of nostalgia, it
takes us through the evolution of the scooter, focusing naturally
on all things Lambretta and Vespa, but also covering plenty of
obscure and eccentric machinery along the way. Scooter enthusiasm
in all its forms receives generous attention, whether as fashion
accessory for fifties movie stars, style-conscious transport choice
for the Mod generation, or object of worship for today's
retro-loving adherents. Quotes in the book such as "The scooters,
clothes and music - an unforgettable time of my life" and
"Exciting, fun and carefree days when anything seemed possible" sum
up the enduring appeal of classic scooters. Anyone afflicted with
the obsession will adore this book.

Classic Motorcycle magazine, but the profile on the Rickman

When Honda released the CX500, the sales brochure stated 'First
into the Future,' and described the bike as a road sports V-twin.
Honda's first venture into the V-twin engine market, with water
cooling and shaft drive, was certainly different from their
previous twin- and four-cylinder models. Known for its good
handling and fuel economy, the low maintenance Honda was
comfortable, loved by tourers and couriers alike and, after
overcoming early teething troubles, developed a reputation for
reliability. Sportier models incorporating turbochargers were also
released, for those looking for an additional adrenaline rush.
After thirty years, there's now a resurgence of interest in the CX
models, both from restorers and custom builders, with aftermarket
cafe racer kits available, too. The techniques, tips and tricks
used by an experienced restorer will save you time and money.
You'll see that you don't need expert knowledge or a fully fitted
workshop for a restoration project. Packed full with photographs
and detailed instructions, this book is your perfect guide, from
start to finish.

Classic British motorcycles were more than simple machines, they
were a cultural phenomenon that lasted half a century. From the
early days of motoring, British innovators led the way, building
some of the world's most famous motorcycles, as well as some of the
best performers. At one point, the rest of the motorcycle world
followed Britain's lead, and by the late 1950s, the British were by
far the largest producers of motorcycles in the world. However,
barely a decade later, the British motorcycle industry was almost
bankrupt and in utter disarray. Illustrated with over 150
photographs, this book explores the rise and fall of the British
motorcycle industry, looking at its history through the years and
then at the motorcycles themselves by brand, giving the complete
story of these amazing machines. 150 illustrations

Pointless, risky, absurd. Yes, that is the beauty of it - absurdly
determined to metamorphose themselves into a glossy photograph seen
in a glossy magazine that caused a spark of desire within the
tinder-dry kindling of their imagination. They were consumed with
all that the photograph promised until that reality could be made
theirs: to achieve all of the experience, the life's journey
implied within it, to redefine their already long lives, to change
themselves, to fast-track to the achievement of the decades of
experience exemplified by those young adventurers in that glossy
photograph in that glossy magazine. What an absurd notion. For no
other reason, it had to be: three quickly became five guys on
heritage motorcycles, hooking up with an ex-Special Forces
operative and a combat zone photographer to make it seven for a
safari across the top of Africa. From Spain to Tangier, they
traversed the Riff, navigated the Atlas Mountains, circled Cirque
du Jaffar, and rode through the Gorges du Ziz. Rough-riding across
Morocco has never been so much fun. Wild camping on the way under
star-spattered sky, across unforgiving terrain where luxury is a
warm sleeping bag. In places where if you don't guard it you lose
it, and where changing co-ordinates on a fast and furious basis
makes good sense. Through oft sudden lows where the warmth of a
Moroccan welcome exceeds the heat from black coffee, honeyed mint
teas, or a meal from a hot tajine. Until dusty boots touch down on
the sands of the Sahara at Erg Chebbi to witness a new dawn rise.
A wise man once said that cars move the body, but motorcycles move
the soul. If you love motorcycles, you will understand the thrill
of weaving in the fluid motion that only two wheels and a
responsive engine can give. Of being on a fabulous road, with the
warmth of the sun on your body, and the wind gently tugging at your
clothes. Now imagine that you have built the bike of your dreams
... can you see it, hear it, feel it? Custom Rides is not only full
of amazing photographs of gorgeous bikes, it also provides an
insight into the mind of some of the world's finest bike designers
and builders, and the tools and equipment they use to get such
special results. So settle down and enjoy the ride, as you feast
your eyes and eat your heart out for all the beautiful bikes
featured in this book.
