The essential exploration of the design, history, and culture of
the motorcycle - an icon of the machine age Motorcycles are
ubiquitous in the world's streets and cities, evolving over decades
in engineering and design to meet individual transportation needs.
With the coming demise of the internal combustion engine and the
rise of electric-powered vehicles, motorcycle design is being
revolutionized by new technologies, the demands of climate change,
and global social transformation. The book showcases 100 superb
examples of motorcycle design from the late 19th century to the
present and then on beyond to the technological innovations of the
future. The essays and texts accompanying each image have been
written by internationally renowned motorcycle experts, Professor
Charles M. Falco and Ultan Guilfoyle, who reveal the motorcycle's
influence on realms as diverse as film, fashion, sport,
advertising, and technology. Beautifully illustrated with specially
commissioned photography and archival ephemera, the engaging text
will prove compulsive reading for design lovers and motorcycle fans
alike. A must-have companion, The Motorcycle, Design, Art, Desire
traces the exciting evolution of this automotive icon - and the
culture of desire, freedom, and rebellion that surrounds it.
Classic British motorcycles were more than simple machines, they
were a cultural phenomenon that lasted half a century. From the
early days of motoring, British innovators led the way, building
some of the world's most famous motorcycles, as well as some of the
best performers. At one point, the rest of the motorcycle world
followed Britain's lead, and by the late 1950s, the British were by
far the largest producers of motorcycles in the world. However,
barely a decade later, the British motorcycle industry was almost
bankrupt and in utter disarray. Illustrated with over 150
photographs, this book explores the rise and fall of the British
motorcycle industry, looking at its history through the years and
then at the motorcycles themselves by brand, giving the complete
story of these amazing machines. 150 illustrations
Want to be an expert on Triumph's 350 and 500 unit-construction
twins? Here is everything everything you need to know about these
classic machines. Alongside the headline-grabbing bikes - the
Bonneville and Trident - Triumph built a whole series of smaller
350/500cc machines, with all the style of their bigger brothers,
but lighter in weight, easier to ride and now cheaper to buy. The
Triumph 350/500s played a key role in the company's success through
the 1960s, in North America as well as the UK. The range included
everything from the original 350cc 3TA, a mild mannered tourer, to
the final Daytona Tiger 500 (a modified version of which won the
Daytona 500 race in 1967), and the TR5T trail bike. This
comprehensive book covers the complete history of these bikes, with
details of model variants, advice on buying and living with a
Triumph 350/500, technical specifications, and a list of useful
contacts.

Pointless, risky, absurd. Yes, that is the beauty of it - absurdly
determined to metamorphose themselves into a glossy photograph seen
in a glossy magazine that caused a spark of desire within the
tinder-dry kindling of their imagination. They were consumed with
all that the photograph promised until that reality could be made
theirs: to achieve all of the experience, the life's journey
implied within it, to redefine their already long lives, to change
themselves, to fast-track to the achievement of the decades of
experience exemplified by those young adventurers in that glossy
photograph in that glossy magazine. What an absurd notion. For no
other reason, it had to be: three quickly became five guys on
heritage motorcycles, hooking up with an ex-Special Forces
operative and a combat zone photographer to make it seven for a
safari across the top of Africa. From Spain to Tangier, they
traversed the Riff, navigated the Atlas Mountains, circled Cirque
du Jaffar, and rode through the Gorges du Ziz. Rough-riding across
Morocco has never been so much fun. Wild camping on the way under
star-spattered sky, across unforgiving terrain where luxury is a
warm sleeping bag. In places where if you don't guard it you lose
it, and where changing co-ordinates on a fast and furious basis
makes good sense. Through oft sudden lows where the warmth of a
Moroccan welcome exceeds the heat from black coffee, honeyed mint
teas, or a meal from a hot tajine. Until dusty boots touch down on
the sands of the Sahara at Erg Chebbi to witness a new dawn rise.

The first and only monograph entirely devoted to the Lambretta LUI
scooter, produced by Innocenti in their tens of thousands, designed
by that master of body styling, Nuccio Bertone, creator of
outstanding cars like the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint and the
Lamborghini Miura. The Lambretta LUI was innovative - perhaps too
much so - and that was possibly the reason it was not understood,
and it was unable to cut for itself as big a slice of the youth
market as it should have done. Innocenti believed in the LUI with
all its conviction, having invested considerably in advertising it
in all available media: television, cinema, newspapers and
magazines. A mighty effort that did not bring in the hoped-for
results But today, the LUI has been recognised, quite rightly, as
one of the shining examples of Italian design as applied to a
scooter. Published as the first in a series of books spotlighting
the most important and significant Lambrettas, this treatise
unveils all the technical and stylistic secrets of the LUI model by
model, illustrated by invaluable archive material never before
published, and is written by Vittorio Tessera, a major world
historian on the popular two-wheeler in all its variations. This
first monograph in the series will be followed by others on the
Lambretta world, including the LiTV 1, LiTV 2, LiTV 3, S/SX, DL and
Junior series. TEXT IN ENGLISH & ITALIAN

Tyson as he highlights vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycles in

a family rich in Harley-Davidson history, Tyson tells their stories
as well as others' accounts and adventures from the Golden Years of
motorcycling. With a foreword written by Jay Leno, this unique book
features a large collection of photographs--some
never-before-published--and Harley-Davidson advertisements from the
early 1900s. So sit back and enjoy the ride of your life on these
antique bikes.
There has been plenty said and written about scooters over the
years, but until now there has been no definitive look at the
culture surrounding our chosen way of life. Many authors have
written about mods and the infamous and often over-hyped beach
battles of the 1960s, but hardly any have tried to capture the
atmosphere of the modern scene in print. We still owe the original
mods for fuelling the imagination of past, present and future
generations and for leaving a rich scooter heritage behind them.
Although the mod way of life was the spark which lit the fuse for
many of us, the majority of scooter riders have evolved into
lifestyle scooterists. We may not dress in a particular style, our
scooters may not be adorned with lights and mirrors, but we still
burn with the same passion as our scooter riding ancestors. It's
over sixty years since the first Italian scooters rolled off the
production lines, but there is still a buzzing and vibrant
lifestyle surrounding them. The small capacity machines have
overtaken the lives of thousands of us, often to the detriment of
everything else we hold dear. Careers, relationships and families
have suffered for this overwhelming and expensive addiction. An
addiction to which there is no cure. We live and breathe the sickly
sweet smell of synthetic two-stroke oil and worship at the altar of
our chosen gods, Lambretta and Vespa (or occasionally Gilera and
Italjet). Our hands are permanently ingrained with the oily
'tattoo's' of a thousand engine rebuilds and our major organs have
suffered the long term effects of our hedonistic lifestyle.
Including interviews with well known scootering personalities, over
150 colour photographs of award-winning custom scooters,
best-selling scooter models, and information on rallies and events,
this book is a must-have for anyone interested in these fun
machines.
Many words have been written about the Honda CBR600 (or the
Hurricane, as it was named in the USA), about its history,
performance, lineage and specification, but few tell you what to
look for when buying one second-hand. That's what this book is
about - it aims at being a straightforward, practical guide to
buying a used CBR600. It won't list all the correct colour
combinations for each year, or analyse the bike's design
philosophy, or consider its background as a standard-setting sports
bike, but it will help you avoid buying a dud. Point by point, it
takes the reader through everything that needs checking when buying
one of these Hondas, plus spares prices, which is the best model to
buy for your needs, and a look at auctions, restorations and
paperwork.
This new edition of Ian Falloon's classic book on the history of
BMW Motorcycles brings the story right up to date, and now includes
all models from 1923 right through to 2019. Over the past 80 years,
BMW motorcycles have provided a unique alternative to those of
other manufacturers. Some motorcycles may have been faster,
certainly others were cheaper, but with their emphasis on quality
and reliability, none have emulated the practicality of a BMW. With
its commitment to ease of serviceability, the BMW motorcycle has
become the preferred choice for hundreds of thousands of
motorcyclists around the world. BMW motorcycles are made to be
ridden, and if the journey includes a mixture of straight roads and
corners, there is no better motorcycle. Factor in the best range of
factory luggage and accessories available, and the success of BMW
motorcycles isn't surprising. Ownership of a BMW is also generally
a long-term affair. Because of long model runs, the designs are so
well developed there seems little need to update on the whim of
fashion. This is most definitely a refreshing change from the
current trend towards instant obsolescence. Falloon is a prolific
author and one of the world's foremost motorcycle historians with
years of experience. His other BMW books include BMW Boxer Twin
Bible, BMW R90S, and the Complete Book of BMW Motorcycles.
Suspension is probably the most misunderstood aspect of motorcycle
performance. This book, by the world's most popular suspension
specialist, makes the art and science of suspension tuning
accessible to both professional and weekend mechanics alike. This
step-by-step, fully illustrated guide shows how anyone can make
their bike handle like a pros, and how any rider - street, dirt, or
racetrack - can improve their performance.Paul Thede runs the
highly successful and popular Race Tech Suspension Seminar, and
brings all his knowledge to bear in this book. From clearly
explaining the three forces of suspension to make an accurate
assessment of the state of your suspension; thorough testing
procedures that gauge how well you are improving the suspension and
your riding ability; even the art of chassis geometry for riding
perfectionists, this book employs step-by-step photographs that
show the disassembling and reassembling projects for forks and
shocks for optimum performance. The book even provides detailed
troubleshooting guides for dirt, street, and supermoto - promising
a solution to virtually any handling problem and increased
performance.
There are very few books about the Hinckley-built Triumphs, and
none will tell you what to look for when buying one secondhand.
That's what this book is about - it is a straightforward, practical
guide to buying a used modern Triumph. It doesn't list all the
correct colour combinations for each year, or analyse the bike's
design philosophy, or consider its background as part of a reborn
industry, but it will help you avoid buying a dud. Point by point,
it takes the reader through everything that needs looking at when
buying a Hinckley Triumph, plus spares prices, which is the best
model to buy for your needs, and a look at auctions, restorations
and paperwork.
The story of the air-cooled 'big' Kawasaki bikes in definitive
detail, researched and written in Japan with the full co-operation
of the factory. This series of models put the company on the map
during the sixties and seventies, helping it to survive a difficult
era that saw hundreds of Japanese motorcycle makers reduced to just
four. Successful immediately, these models defended Kawasaki's
honour on the tracks as well as in the showrooms, handing the
company numerous world championship titles. The series was recently
revived as part of a retro boom, and a new machine has been
launched, delivering the same thrill and charm as its predecessors.

From the 1950s through to the 1970s, Hughie Hancox worked at the
Triumph Meriden factory in various capacites - a fitter, a member
of the famous Royal Corps of Signals Motorcycle Display Team, in
the experimental department (where he actually worked on the
prototype Bonneville), and eventually as one of the legendary
Triumph testers. This latter role provided countless unique
experiences with some of the most iconic British motorcycles ever
manufactured. The story of production testing at Meriden has never
before been published, and this intimate and pragmatic account
comes straight from a man who was at the heart of it. With many
previously unpublished pictures and service bulletins, plus helpful
advice on problems that still exist with the bikes today, this is a
unique book about a fascinating time and place in British
industry.
After VE Day in 1945 the British population returned
enthusiastically to the road. But the cost and availability of both
vehicles and fuel led to the post-war scene being dominated by
motorcycles, most of them ex-military machines, eagerly snapped up
for everyday use in an age when a family car remained just a dream
for many. The British industry, meanwhile, was exhorted to 'export
or die', and until well into the 1950s the majority of new British
bikes were sold abroad. During this period, the industry - the
largest and most important in the world - continued to develop new
and exciting machines. Mick Walker tells the story of the British
post-war motorcycle during this golden age of the industry. With
the help of archive photographs and advertising material, this book
conjures up a lost age of the British bike, of journeys to work by
popping two-strokes, and trips to the seaside in the family
motorcycle combination.
After a botched spinal operation left her partially paralysed aged
forty-five, Bizzie Frost found herself unable to enjoy the active
and invigorating lifestyle she loved in Saudi Arabia. That was
until six years later when her husband proposed they buy a
Harley-Davidson. An invitation to join friends on a 2,500km ride to
Oman was irresistible and they bought their Road King - Maridadi.
Travels with Maridadi is an epic account of adventures on a
Harley-Davidson in Saudi Arabia, a country rarely visited by
outsiders during the thirty years that Bizzie called it home.
Riding pillion with her airline captain husband, Frosty, she
travelled thousands of kilometres across the deserts and mountains
of the Kingdom, as well as other Middle Eastern countries. Her
stories and photographs breathe life into the scenery, people and
culture of the Kingdom, and convey the freedom and healing power of
motorcycling on the open road.
