Endophthalmitis (Paperback): Barbara Cole Endophthalmitis (Paperback)
Barbara Cole
R3,695 Discovery Miles 36 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Endophthalmitis refers to the inflammation of the intraocular tissues and fluids of the eye and can be non-infectious or caused by bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection. It can be classified as exogenous (post-operative, post-traumatic or as a complication of a corneal ulcer) or endogenous (secondary to hematogenous spread from another infected site). This book discusses the clinical manifestations, relevance of diagnosis, and involved species of fungal endophthalmitis. It also examines anti-vascular endothelial growth factor medications; prevention and treatment of postoperative endophthalmitis; and a pharmacokinetic review of antibiotics used in the treatment of endophthalmitis.

Eye Diseases Associated with Sleep Disorders (Hardcover): Mingwu Wang Eye Diseases Associated with Sleep Disorders (Hardcover)
Mingwu Wang
R3,699 Discovery Miles 36 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sleep disorders are increasingly recognized to contribute to medical morbidities and mortality. More and more ocular diseases are linked to sleep disorders, among them in particular being obstructive sleep apnea. Management of these ocular diseases requires a good understanding of such association and often a collaborative approach with sleep disorder specialists. On the other hand, many patients with sleep disorders have concurrent ocular disorders. With this in mind, timely referral to ophthalmologists would greatly alleviate comorbidities and improve the quality of life in such patients. Eye Diseases Associated with Sleep Disorders emphasizes the underlying pathophysiology of each ocular disorder in the respective setting of sleep disorders. A typical case scenario is presented at the beginning of each chapter. The specific ocular disease is then described in reader-friendly terms to facilitate an overall understanding of the condition. The authors finally review the accumulated evidence regarding the association between ocular diseases and sleep disorders, from discussing possible underlying pathophysiologies to the analysis of clinical study data. With a good understanding of the pathogenesis, this book helps bring together primary care clinicians with eye care specialists for managing patient morbidities in an easily digestible figure-rich format.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) - Classification, Risk Factors & Treatment (Hardcover): Elmira Aguilar Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) - Classification, Risk Factors & Treatment (Hardcover)
Elmira Aguilar
R3,702 Discovery Miles 37 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Retinopathy of prematurity is a disease caused by abnormal vessel regression of the retinal vasculature that affects premature infants with low birth weights. Despite significant improvements in screening guidelines and treatment modalties, ROP is still the leading cause of reversible paediatric blindness worldwide. The authors of this book explore the possibility of applying the concept of fractal analysis to images of retinal blood vessels for morphometric analysis and classification; the quality of life for children with retinopathy of prematurity; the differences in ethnicity and socioeconomic status that influence the prevalence, risks, outcome and management of ROP; the outcome and prognostic factors of the intravitreal administration of bevacizumab for ROP; the outcomes of transpupillary diode laser photocoagulation for ROP; new therapeutic strategies for treating ROP and late complications that can develop and persistent into later childhood and even adult life (for example, long-term refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus and optic nerve abnormalities).

Building off of the success of the first edition, this text includes significantly updated information, as well as new chapters that are complete with high quality color images and illustrations. Lacrimal surgeries are among the most commonly performed ones in oculopastic surgery. The procedures range from unblocking tear ducts in small children with congenital dysmorphology, to correcting dry eye through surgery. As with many of these procedures, the disorders sound minor but the patients' lives are seriously affected. By broadening the scope of the subject, the editors of The Lacrimal System, Second Edition meet the needs of oculoplastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, residents and fellows who are learning these special procedures.

The Ophthalmology Examinations Review (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): Tien Yin Wong, Wesley Guang Wei Chong, Zhu Li Yap,... The Ophthalmology Examinations Review (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
Tien Yin Wong, Wesley Guang Wei Chong, Zhu Li Yap, Saadia Farooqui
R1,917 R1,748 Discovery Miles 17 480 Save R169 (9%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Since the last Edition of Ophthalmology Examinations Review, there has been major new discovery in the understanding of common eye diseases, and new treatments and diagnostic procedures have been refined or newly developed.

A revised Edition reflecting these changes is warranted at this time. The aim and scope of the book will be consistent with the previous two editions in that it will provide a broad review for the final year ophthalmology resident and trainees taking the specialist ophthalmology examinations. The book deals primarily with key facts and topics that are important from an examination perspective. Only information and facts that are considered relevant and critical to the exams are covered, with topics that may be of scientific interest, but are not common to exams specifically left out. This book will help the resident organize and synthesize knowledge acquired from various other sources or textbooks. While not meant to replace standard textbooks, enough information is contained within the book to serve as the main revision text nearer the exams.

The style and format of this book is intentionally didactic, with questions and short answers. The answer includes a "model opening statement," followed by a classification system to aid organization of facts and then by the bulk of the answer in concise short notes. Exam Tips are inserted to provide an insight into how to answer different types of questions and when appropriate, a Clinical Approach section is also included.

In the new edition, topics such as new understanding of disease mechanisms, new investigations (e.g. OCT), and new procedures and treatment (e.g. use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors, new refractive surgical techniques, new corneal transplant) are covered.
