Emily Y. Chew, Anand Swaroop
R4,267 Discovery Miles 42 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This edited book focuses on the recent advances in our understanding of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), combining epidemiology and clinical diagnosis, with genetics and immunological aspects as well as the role of proteostasis and mitochondria before diving into new therapies including stem cell based approaches. AMD is a leading cause of largely incurable blindness worldwide and projected to double from 2.07 million to 5.44 million individuals by 2050 in the United States. Globally, 288 million individuals are projected to have AMD by 2040. The disease has enormous socioeconomic impact on the affected individuals, their families and the society. This book will bring together the state of the art basic science knowledge with clinically relevant findings and address the challenges for future research in AMD. The intersection of different disciplines will provide potential areas for further investigations to reduce the burden of blindness from AMD. This book offers an appealing and insightful resource for clinicians, scientists, students and fellows.

Limbal Relaxing Incisions - A Practical Guide (Paperback): Louis D. "Skip" Nichamin Limbal Relaxing Incisions - A Practical Guide (Paperback)
Louis D. "Skip" Nichamin
R3,494 Discovery Miles 34 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For both surgeon and patient alike, the success of modern implant surgery is increasingly judged by the refractive and astigmatic outcome. In spite of this, there has not yet been a practical book that addresses the process of performing limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs). Dr. Louis D. "Skip" Nichamin and his contributors aim to fill this void with Limbal Relaxing Incisions: A Practical Guide. Limbal Relaxing Incisions serves as a guide for novice refractive implant surgeons looking to incorporate incisional astigmatism surgery into their repertoire. It also contains practical pearls that the more experienced practitioner can use to refine astigmatic refractive outcomes following lens-based surgery. Limbal Relaxing Incisions covers a wide range of information from the history, background, and future of astigmatism management, to important subjects such as measuring cylinder and strategic planning for the surgical correction of astigmatism. Dr. Nichamin and his contributors detail their personal approaches to the use of LRIs, each presenting a slightly different technique and providing simple clinical pearls for both the novice and experienced practitioner. In addition, the book offers a discussion on astigmatic enhancement surgery, potential complications, and insight into the emerging field of Femto-Second Laser technology to further refine and automate astigmatism correction. Residents in ophthalmology, comprehensive ophthalmologists, refractive cataract surgeons, and keratorefractive surgeons taking up lens-based refractive surgery will appreciate the "this is how I do it" approach in Limbal Relaxing Incisions: A Practical Guide, as well as the emphasis on clinical pearls, written by some of the most experienced refractive cataract surgeons in the field.

Clinical Insights and Examination Techniques in Ophthalmology (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Thomas Kuriakose Clinical Insights and Examination Techniques in Ophthalmology (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Thomas Kuriakose
R2,436 Discovery Miles 24 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book elucidates the principles of sound clinical examination in ophthalmology. Based on the author's extensive teaching experience, it makes the case for arriving at a diagnosis through detailed clinical examinations, including history taking, knowledge of clinical epidemiology, and using only the most relevant clinical tests. Starting with basic chapters on relevant statistics and clinical epidemiology, the book covers history-taking, visual function assessment, slit lamp examination, and examinations of each important field (e.g. the lids, orbit, cornea, iris and pupil, glaucoma patients, sclera, lens, posterior segment, pediatric patient and neuro-ophthalmology) in separate chapters. Full of practical tips on examining patients at the clinic, the book also describes the rationale behind each clinical test and its interpretation. It is also hoped that teachers who come across this book will evaluate students on the basis of these relevant clinical examinations rather than quizzing them on esoteric clinical tests that are not routinely used and are of little clinical value. This book is intended to help all ophthalmologists, beginners and veterans alike, improve their clinical examination thinking and skills.

Retinal Degenerative Diseases - Mechanisms and Experimental Therapy (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Catherine Bowes Rickman,... Retinal Degenerative Diseases - Mechanisms and Experimental Therapy (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Catherine Bowes Rickman, Christian Grimm, Robert E. Anderson, John D. Ash, Matthew M LaVail, …
R8,893 Discovery Miles 88 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contains the proceedings of the XVIII International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2018). A majority of those who spoke and presented posters at the meeting contributed to this volume. The blinding diseases of inherited retinal degenerations have no treatments, and age-related macular degeneration has no cures, despite the fact that it is an epidemic among the elderly, with 1 in 3-4 affected by the age of 70. The RD Symposium focused on the exciting new developments aimed at understanding these diseases and providing therapies for them. Since most major scientists in the field of retinal degenerations attend the biennial RD Symposia, they are known by most as the "best" and "most important" meetings in the field. The volume presents representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy. While advances in these areas of retinal degenerations were described, there will be many new topics that either are in their infancy or did not exist at the time of the last RD Symposium, RD2016. These include the role of inflammation and immunity, as well as other basic mechanisms, in age-related macular degeneration, several new aspects of gene therapy, and revolutionary new imaging and functional testing that will have a huge impact on the diagnosis and following the course of retinal degenerations, as well as to provide new quantitative endpoints for clinical trials. The retina is an approachable part of the central nervous system (CNS), and there is a major interest in neuroprotective and gene therapy for CNS diseases and neurodegenerations, in general. It should be noted that with successful and exciting initial clinical trials in neuroprotective and gene therapy, including the restoration of sight in blind children, the retinal degeneration therapies are leading the way towards new therapeutic measures for neurodegenerations of the CNS. Many of the successes recently reported in these areas of retinal degeneration sprang from collaborations established at previous RD Symposia, and many of those were reported at the RD2016 meeting and included in the current volume. We anticipate the excitement of those working in the field and those afflicted with retinal degenerations is reflected in the volume.

Shed Tears for Diagnostics (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Anjali Prashar Shed Tears for Diagnostics (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Anjali Prashar
R686 R615 Discovery Miles 6 150 Save R71 (10%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book covers a wide range of topics concerning human tear based science, starting from basics such as the normal composition of tears and moving up to novel disease detection platforms. The entire approach is pioneering, as tears are beginning to be recognized as the most invaluable non-invasive tool in diagnostics. Interestingly, the concept is not restricted to ocular diseases: In recent years, tear diagnostics is increasingly being tapped even for cancer detection. Hopefully, non-invasive tear diagnostics will eventually replace today's invasive disease detection and monitoring techniques. Previous literature on tear diagnostics has been restricted to scientific journal articles, most of which dealt with a single tear constituent, such as a protein. This book offers a far more comprehensive and handy 'reference guide,' presenting both basic and advanced information and data. Accordingly, it will be useful for researchers in academia and the pharmaceutical industry, as well as healthcare professionals and diagnostic kit developers.
