St Cuthberts Botanical Ultra Smooth is a 300gsm paper which is mould made from 50% cotton, and which is suitable for use with watercolours, watercolour pencils and acrylics (as well as many dry media). It is acid free and calcium carbonate buffered. The absence of acid guarantees excellent permanence and resistance to ageing. The colour (High White) is a very close match to Fabriano 5, and it does contain optical brighteners to give it a bright white colour. Fabriano Classico watercolour paper in Fat Pads

The Fabriano Classico 5 paper is 300gsm, mould-made, 50% cotton, surface sized, acid-free and has a Hot Press (satinata) finish. The Fat Pad is spiral wire bound on the short edge with 25 sheets per pad. This high quality Italian watercolour paper is often recommended in art magazines by members of the Royal Society of Botanical Artists. The smooth, strong white surface makes it the most popular pad for botanical art and illustration.

Fabriano 5 paper has changed permanently because of changes to the machine used to produce it. The surface texture is a bit less smooth and the sizing has changed slightly. The manufacturer does not believe the change is significant, they feel the paper is still within their allowed parameters. But a number of artists have found the change significant enough that it interferes with their work. They are usually artists who make very precise work and need to be able to control fine lines, so most often are botanical artists using watercolour or coloured pencil.

This classic French paper has a mottled texture on one side and a flat surface on the other, both equally suitable for pastel, oil pastel, charcoal, chalk, pencil, watercolor, and acrylic. It is a heavyweight paper with a high cotton rag content (66%) to ensure long life without deterioration.
