Fabriano 5 is an exceptionally smooth paper made by the Italian company Fabriano. This paper is both surface sized and watermarked, with the Fabriano logo. The Fabriano 5 paper is mould made from 50% cotton and 50% carefully selected raw material. The absence of acid to guarantees excellent permanence and resistance to ageing.

This paper is designed for watercolour painting and lithography printing, but can also be used for tempera, charcoal, graphite, wax, and pastel. It is immensely popular product with watercolour artists and printmakers alike.

Sumi-e painting evolved in the 5th century from Chinese calligraphy. The main subjects are taken from nature. In the 12th century Zen monks brought the technique to Japan where even today Sumi-e painting has a decisive influence on lifestyle. Translated “Sumi” means “black ink” and “e” means both “path” and “painting”. The style of brush painting is both a simple and yet highly aesthetic drawing made of powerful, mostly chasing and rapidly executed lines.

Patience and inner harmony are essential in brush painting to capture the spirit of the subject. Sumi-e is therefore not only an Asian painting technique but also a form of spiritual relaxation therapy and is becoming increasingly popular in Europe.

Recommended Paper For the first time Hahnemühle has developed a special paper for the Japanese Sumi-e painting technique that is capable of meeting the strenuous requirements of the Sumi-e technique. It is extremely thin but nevertheless absorbent and allows the water to flow further than the ink. This permits sharp outlines but also delicate drawings. The pen strokes are more visible. Millford is the newest watercolour paper developed by St Cuthberts Mill. It is styled on the discontinued Whatman watercolour paper, after artists grieved the loss of this unique type of watercolour paper.
