Medicinal plants and plant-derived medicine are widely used in
traditional cultures all over the world and they are becoming
increasingly popular in modern society as natural alternatives to
synthetic chemicals. As more and more natural remedies are being
commercialised, there is a need for a user-friendly reference guide
to the plants and their products. The book gives the reader a
bird's eye view of more than 350 of the bestknown medicinal plants
of the world and their uses, in a compact, colourful and
scientifically accurate reference text. It provides quick answers
to the most obvious questions: Where does this plant originate?
What does it look like? In which culture is it traditionally used?
What is it used for? Which chemical compounds does it contain? How
safe is it? What is known about its pharmacological activity? What
evidence is there that it is effective? The authors also provide
short overviews of the various health conditions for which
medicinal plants are used and the active compounds (secondary
metabolites) found in the plants and their modes of actions.
'Truly a marvellous collection ... There is balm for the soul, fire
for the belly, a cooling compress for the fevered brow, solace for
the wounded, an arm around the lonely shoulder - the whole
collection is a matchless compound of hug, tonic and kiss' Stephen
Fry Sometimes only a poem will do. These poetic prescriptions and
wise words of advice offer comfort, delight and inspiration for
all; a space for reflection, and that precious realization - I'm
not the only one who feels like this. In the years since he first
had the idea of prescribing short, powerful poems for all manner of
spiritual ailments, William Sieghart has taken his Poetry Pharmacy
around the length and breadth of Britain, into the pages of the
Guardian, onto BBC Radio 4 and onto the television, honing his
prescriptions all the time. This pocket-sized book presents the
most essential poems in his dispensary: those which, again and
again, have really shown themselves to work. Whether you are
suffering from loneliness, lack of courage, heartbreak,
hopelessness, or even from an excess of ego, there is something
here to ease your pain. 'The book is delightful; it rightly
resituates poetry in relation to its biggest and most serious task:
helping us to live and die well' Alain de Botton
After his very public fall from grace in 2013, renowned spiritual
teacher Andrew Cohen vanished from view and underwent a dark night
of the soul. After years of intense introspection and
soul-searching, Cohen shares his insights into the failure of his
organisation EnlightenNext, including his own responsibility for
its downfall, as well as a new vision for modern spirituality based
on the wisdom of the lessons he learned. The author details his
spiritual initiation, his rapid rise to guruhood, the explosive
growth of his spiritual community worldwide, and then--right at the
height of its spiritual and creative emergence--its dramatic
collapse, which left his students lost, bitter, angry, and
confused. He shares his gripping spiritual odyssey from the heights
of illumination, down into the existential ashes of failed
aspirations, to the underworld of inner darkness, and back again
into the light. Building upon the lessons he learned, including the
need to deal thoroughly with one's own shadow, Cohen explains the
necessity of the guru in spiritual practice, while also exposing
the dysfunctions of the traditional guru-disciple model. He shares
insights from his discussions with spiritual leaders, including Ken
Wilber, Diane Musho Hamilton, Doshin Roshi, Jeffrey Kripal, and
Patricia Albere, revealing how the issues he faced are profoundly
relevant to the spiritual community as a whole. He also shares how
his teachings have evolved and sheds light on the art of
communicating beyond ego and unleashing the co-creative power of
our shared collective intelligence--the key to initiating
enlightened change in this world in crisis.
The first edition of Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources was
published in a period of renewed attention to biologically active
compounds of natural origin. This trend has continued and
intensified-natural products are again under the spotlight, in
particular for their possible pharmacological applications. Largely
focusing on natural products as lead compounds in drug discovery,
Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources, Second Edition: Natural
Products as Lead Compounds in Drug Discovery is actually a
completely new volume containing surveys of selected recent
advances in an interdisciplinary area covering chemistry of natural
products, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, and other related
topics. Written by some of the most reputed scientists in the
field, this second edition includes new chapters from authors who
contributed to the first edition as well as many chapters compiled
by new authors. Introducing the reader to strategies and methods in
the search for bioactive natural products, this book covers topics
including: Natural sources of bioactive compounds such as aquatic
cyanobacteria, filamentous fungi, and tropical plants, The
tremendous potentiality of metabolic engineering of natural
products biosynthesis The contribution of emerging or developing
technologies to the study of bioactive natural compounds, namely
computational methods and circular dichroism The potential of
natural or natural-derived compounds for specific therapeutic
applications: treatment of viral diseases, regulation of
hypoxia-inducible factor, antimalarials, modulation of
angiogenesis, and antitumor and wound-healing activity Selected
examples of natural product families and related synthetic
analogues, namely polyphenols and campthotecins Compiled for
researchers and Ph.D. students working in interdisciplinary fields,
this book will also be appreciated by readers without a background
in chemistry interested in bioactive natural products, their
biological and pharmacological properties, and their possible use
as chemopreventive or chemotherapeutic agents. Conversely, the
biological and pharmacological data and methods are accessible by
chemists.
The world of development thinkers and practitioners is abuzz with a
new lexicon: the idea of "the nexus" between water, food, and
energy which is intuitively compelling. It promises better
integration of multiple sectoral elements, a better transition to
greener economies, and sustainable development. However, there
appears to be little agreement on its precise meaning, whether it
only complements existing environmental governance approaches or
how it can be enhanced in national contexts. One current approach
to the nexus treats it as a risk and security matter while another
treats it within economic rationality addressing externalities
across sector. A third perspective acknowledges it as a
fundamentally political process requiring negotiation amongst
different actors with distinct perceptions, interests, and
practices. This perspective highlights the fact that technical
solutions for improving coherence within the nexus may have
unintended and negative impacts in other policy areas, such as
poverty alleviation and education. The Water-Food-Energy Nexus:
Power, Politics and Justice lays out the managerial-technical
definitions of the nexus and challenges these conceptions by
bringing to the forefront the politics of the nexus, around two key
dimensions - a dynamic understanding of water-food-energy systems,
and a normative positioning around nexus debates, in particular
around social justice. The authors argue that a shift in nexus
governance is required towards approaches where limits to control
are acknowledged, and more reflexive/plural strategies adopted.
This book will be of interest to academic researchers, policy
makers, and practitioners in the fields of international
development studies, environmental politics, and science and
technology studies, as well as international relations.

In this extraordinary book Josephine Peters, a respected northern
California Indian elder and Native healer, shares her vast,
lifelong cultural and plant knowledge. The book begins with
Josephine's personal and tribal history and gathering ethics.
Josephine then instructs the reader in medicinal and plant food
preparations and offers an illustrated catalog of the uses and
doses of over 160 plants. At a time of the commercialization of
traditional ecological knowledge, Peters presents her rich
tradition on her own terms, and according to her spiritual
convictions about how her knowledge should be shared. This volume
is essential for anyone working in ethnobotany, ethnomedicine,
environmental anthropology, Native American studies, and Western
and California culture and history.
Is your church prepared to care for individuals who have
experienced various forms of abuse? As we continue to learn of more
individuals experiencing sexual abuse, domestic violence, and other
forms of abuse, it's clear that resources are needed to help
ministries and leaders care for these individuals with love,
support, and in cooperation with civil authorities. This handbook
seeks to help the church take a significant step forward in its
care for those who have been abused. Working in tandem with the
resources and videos found at churchcares.com, this handbook brings
together leading evangelical trauma counselors, victim advocates,
social workers, attorneys, batterer interventionists, and survivors
to equip pastors and ministry leaders for the appropriate initial
responses to a variety of abuse scenarios in churches, schools, or
ministries. Though the most comprehensive training is experienced
by using this handbook and the videos together, readers who may be
unable to access the videos can use this handbook as a stand-alone
resource.
The Gaelic pharmacy was rich, the sources of which lay almost
entirely in nature and were subject to the minimum of preparation.
Much of the rich store of material comes from the great legacy of
medieval Gaelic manuscripts. In more recent times, papers of
medical societies have shown how traditional methods and cures are
still of value to modern medicine. In addition to a general
historical background, which traces the story of Highland folk
tradition from earliest times, Mary Beith describes a whole variety
of traditional remedies, cures and practices, from the healing
properties of stone and metal, animals and insects, to rituals,
charms and incantations. Her book also includes a list of the most
commonly used herbs. Clearly written with extensive source notes,
Healing Threads is a unique introduction to a subject that has
fascinated generation after generation.
