Collateral Circulation of the Heart (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Christian Seiler Collateral Circulation of the Heart (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Christian Seiler
R3,466 Discovery Miles 34 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The sober explanation for this book is a call by the Springer-Verlag, London, to edit a publication on ‘The functional relevance of the collateral circulation’ of the heart. Alternatively, it could be ‘sold’ as the result of my intention to reduce entropy of 18 years of scientific work on the topic of the coronary circulation, which was itself meant to diminish the amount of ‘useless’ energy. Such a process of reducing disarray in a system with the aim of grasping it better is related to simplification, which carries the risk of introducing error. This can be exemplified by the historic view of angina pectoris, which used to be simplified as being always fatal, thus obscuring for nearly two centuries the view of a ‘self-healing’ mechanism such as the collateral circulation of the heart. It would be na?¨ve, to assume the present work to be free of erroneous oversimplification, because the very nature of scientific work is related to generating (simple) hypotheses with their subsequent falsification. In that context and bluntly, my primary interest in the field of the collateral circulation was not initiated with a vision of eradicating the consequences of coronary artery disease (CAD) by promoting the growth of natural bypasses. The time for such sizeable ideas had passed in the 1970s with the start of the work by Wolfgang Schaper.

Ischemia and Loss of Vascular Autoregulation in Ocular and Cerebral Diseases - A New Perspective (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Maurice... Ischemia and Loss of Vascular Autoregulation in Ocular and Cerebral Diseases - A New Perspective (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Maurice E. Langham
R2,915 Discovery Miles 29 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the introduction: The purpose of the present book is to bring together in a coherent manner new knowledge gained from research over the past 50 years on the physiology of intraocular pressure, ocular blood flow and the relation of these fundamental parameters to early diagnosis and therapy of vascular diseases of the eye and brain. It will be evident to the reader that the presentation is influenced significantly by the author s own research. My justification is that by good fortune I have spent many years with superb collaboration helping solve outstanding problems of ocular physiology. This knowledge has increased understanding of the parameters underlying the onset of ischemia and the loss of autoregulation associated with common ocular disease and thereby led to new methods of diagnosis and therapy. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is an important diagnostic test in pulmonary medicine and cardiology. Capable of providing significantly more information about an individual's exercise capacity than standard exercise treadmill or 6-minute walk tests, the test is used for a variety of purposes including evaluating patients with unexplained exercise limitation or dyspnea on exertion, monitoring disease progression or response to treatment, determining fitness to undergo various surgical procedures and monitoring the effects of training in highly fit athletes. Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing is a unique new text that is ideal for trainees. It is presented in a clear, concise and easy-to-follow manner and is capable of being read in a much shorter time than the available texts on this topic. Chapters describe the basic physiologic responses observed during sustained exercise and explain how to perform and interpret these studies. The utility of the resource is further enhanced by several sections of actual patient cases, which provide opportunities to begin developing test interpretation skills. Given the widespread use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in clinical practice, trainees in pulmonary and critical care medicine, cardiology, sports medicine, exercise physiology, and occasionally internal medicine, will find Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing to be an essential and one of a kind reference.

Raw Veganism - The Philosophy of The Human Diet (Hardcover): Carlo Alvaro Raw Veganism - The Philosophy of The Human Diet (Hardcover)
Carlo Alvaro
R3,907 Discovery Miles 39 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Human beings are getting fatter and sicker. As we question what we eat and why we eat it, this book argues that living well involves consuming a raw vegan diet. With eating healthfully and eating ethically being simpler said than done, this book argues that the best solution to health, environmental, and ethical problems concerning animals is raw veganism-the human diet. The human diet is what humans are naturally designed to eat, and that is, a raw vegan diet of fruit, tender leafy greens, and occasionally nuts and seeds. While veganism raises challenging questions over the ethics of consuming animal products, while also considering the environmental impact of the agriculture industry, raw veganism goes a step further and argues that consuming cooked food is also detrimental to our health and the environment. Cooking foods allows us to eat food that is not otherwise fit for human consumption and in an age that promotes eating foods in 'moderation' and having 'balanced' diets, this raises the question of why we are eating foods that should only be consumed in moderation at all, as moderation clearly implies they aren't good for us. In addition, from an environmental perspective, the use of stoves, ovens and microwaves for cooking contributes significantly to energy consumption and cooking in general generates excessive waste of food and resources. Thus, this book maintains that living well and living a noble life, that is, good physical and moral health, requires consuming a raw vegan diet. Exploring the scientific and philosophical aspects of raw veganism, this novel book is essential reading for all interested in promoting ethical, healthful, and sustainable diets.

The High Blood Pressure Solution - A Scientifically Proven Program for Preventing Strokes and Heart Disease (Paperback, 2nd... The High Blood Pressure Solution - A Scientifically Proven Program for Preventing Strokes and Heart Disease (Paperback, 2nd Edition, Second Edition)
Richard D. Moore
R554 R475 Discovery Miles 4 750 Save R79 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

HEALTH The High Blood Pressure Solution presents a natural approach to controlling hypertension and dispels many of the myths surrounding the treatment of this silent killer. In clear, simple language, backed by sound scientific research, Dr. Moore explains how: - Hypertension is completely preventable without reliance on synthetic drugs - Artificially lowering blood pressure to "normal" levels with drugs fails to prevent many strokes and heart attacks - The vast majority of strokes could be eliminated by balancing dietary potassium and sodium - Based on the principles in this book, the entire country of Finland has reduced strokes and heart attacks 60% nationwide Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition of The High Blood Pressure Solution with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where table salt has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium/magnesium mixture. Between 1972 and 1992, Finland saw a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. He also includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that reduction of any hypertension drugsyou might be taking can be effected safely. RICHARD MOORE holds an M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. in biophysics from Purdue University. He has been a professor of biophysics at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a visiting professor at the University of Vermont's medical school. He has been active in the field of biomedical research for over thirty years.
