R3,456 Discovery Miles 34 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is it about anime that is so appealing to a transnational fan base? Is the American attraction to anime similar to the popularity of previous fads of Japanese culture, like the Japonisants of fin-de-siecle France enamored of Japanese art and architecture, or the American poets in the fifties and sixties who latched onto haiku? Or is this something new, a product of global culture in which ethnic identities carry less weight? This book explores these issues by taking a look at anime fans and the place they occupy, both in terms of subculture in Japan and America, and in relation to Western perceptions of Japan since the late 1800s.

In the years between the end of World War II and the mid-1950s, the popular culture of today was invented in the pulpy, boldly illustrated pages of comic books. But no sooner had comics emerged than they were beaten down by mass bonfires, congressional hearings, and a McCarthyish panic over their unmonitored and uncensored content. Esteemed critic David Hajdu vividly evokes the rise, fall, and rise again of comics in this engrossing history.

Marie Duval: maverick Victorian cartoonist offers the first critical appraisal of the work of Marie Duval (Isabelle Emilie de Tessier, 1847-1890), one of the most unusual, pioneering and visionary cartoonists of the later nineteenth century. It discusses key themes and practices of Duval's vision and production, relative to the wider historic social, cultural and economic environments in which her work was made, distributed and read, identifing Duval as an exemplary radical practitioner. The book interrogates the relationships between the practices and the forms of print, story-telling, drawing and stage performance. It focuses on the creation of new types of cultural work by women and highlights the style of Duval's drawings relative to both the visual conventions of theatre production and the significance of the visualisation of amateurism and vulgarity. Marie Duval: maverick Victorian cartoonist establishes Duval as a unique but exemplary figure in a transformational period of the nineteenth century. -- .

Steve Gerber - Conversations (Hardcover): Dominick Grace, Eric Hoffman, Jason Sacks Steve Gerber - Conversations (Hardcover)
Dominick Grace, Eric Hoffman, Jason Sacks
R3,254 Discovery Miles 32 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Steve Gerber (1947-2008) is among the most significant comics writers of the modern era. Best known for his magnum opus Howard the Duck, he also wrote influential series such as Man-Thing, Omega the Unknown, The Phantom Zone, and Hard Time, expressing a combination of intelligence and empathy rare in American comics. Gerber rose to prominence during the 1970s. His work for Marvel Comics during that era helped revitalize several increasingly cliched generic conventions of superhero, horror, and funny animal comics by inserting satire, psychological complexity, and existential absurdism. Gerber's scripts were also often socially conscious, confronting, among other things, capitalism, environmentalism, political corruption, and censorship. His critique also extended into the personal sphere, addressing such taboo topics as domestic violence, racism, inequality, and poverty. This volume follows Gerber's career through a range of interviews, beginning with his height during the 1970s and ending with an interview with Michael Eury just before Gerber's death in 2008. Among the pieces featured is a 1976 interview with Mark Lerer, originally published in the low-circulation fanzine Pittsburgh Fan Forum, where Gerber looks back on his work for Marvel during the early to mid-1970s, his most prolific period. This volume concludes with selections from Gerber's dialogue with his readers and admirers in online forums and a Gerber-based Yahoo Group, wherein he candidly discusses his many projects over the years. Gerber's unique voice in comics has established his legacy. Indeed, his contribution earned him a posthumous induction into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

Is Superman Circumcised? - The Complete Jewish History of the World's Greatest Hero (Paperback): Roy Schwartz Is Superman Circumcised? - The Complete Jewish History of the World's Greatest Hero (Paperback)
Roy Schwartz
R904 Discovery Miles 9 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Superman is the original superhero, an American icon, and arguably the most famous character in the world--and he's Jewish! Introduced in June 1938, the Man of Steel was created by two Jewish teens, Jerry Siegel, the son of immigrants from Eastern Europe, and Joe Shuster, an immigrant. They based their hero's origin story on Moses, his strength on Samson, his mission on the golem, and his nebbish secret identity on themselves. They made him a refugee fleeing catastrophe on the eve of World War II and sent him to tear Nazi tanks apart nearly two years before the US joined the war. In the following decades, Superman's mostly Jewish writers, artists, and editors continued to borrow Jewish motifs for their stories, basing Krypton's past on Genesis and Exodus, its society on Jewish culture, the trial of Lex Luthor on Adolf Eichmann's, and a future holiday celebrating Superman on Passover. A fascinating journey through comic book lore, American history, and Jewish tradition, this book examines the entirety of Superman's career from 1938 to date, and is sure to give readers a newfound appreciation for the Mensch of Steel!

Comic Art of Europe - An International, Comprehensive Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): John Lent Comic Art of Europe - An International, Comprehensive Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
John Lent
R2,568 Discovery Miles 25 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Encompassing 29 countries of Europe, this detailed bibliography covers the field of comic art. European academicians and journalists began the study of comic art earlier than their counterparts in other areas of the world. This volume reflects those efforts as well as the substantial growth of contemporary writings. Art Historian David Kunzle introduces the work, thus acknowledging the importance of Europe's lead in the scholarship of comic art in all its forms. This is one of four volumes dealing with various regions of the world in an attempt for the first time to present a comprehensive, international study of comic art scholarship.

Chapters are country(ies) specific, except for the first, which includes continental, regional, and comparative perspectives. A feature of chapter one is its resources component, including an annotated directory of 81 comic art-related periodicals. Because of an unusually large number of sources, the chapters on Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy were expanded and subcategorised beyond historical and contemporary perspectives and specific comic art forms. Thus, many citations appear under categories of children's press, festivals, humor periodicals, anthologies, art and aesthetics, cinema, education and culture, effects debate, genres, industry, language and semiotics, legal aspects, literature, psychology, religion, socio-cultural aspects, and technical aspects. Additionally, more than 250 individual cartoonists and over 110 characters and titles were given separate categories. Art Historian David Kunzle, who has written the definitive histories of comic art precursors, wrote a personalized foreword. A preface delineating the unique characteristics of the book and complete indices conveniently divided by authors, cartoonists, characters and titles, periodicals, and subjects are provided.

Jewish Women in Comics - Bodies and Borders (Paperback): Heike Bauer, Andrea Greenbaum, Sarah Lightman Jewish Women in Comics - Bodies and Borders (Paperback)
Heike Bauer, Andrea Greenbaum, Sarah Lightman
R1,033 Discovery Miles 10 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this groundbreaking collection of essays, interviews, and artwork, contributors draw upon a rich treasure trove of Jewish women’s comics to explore the representation of Jewish women’s bodies and bodily experience in pictorial narratives. Spanning national, cultural, and artistic borders, the essays shine a light on the significant contributions of Jewish women to comics. The volume includes major figures such as Miriam Katin, Emil Ferris, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, and Rutu Modan alongside works by artists translated for the first time into English, such as the Georgian Nino Biniashvili and the Haredi artist Batsheva Havlin. Exploring topics such as family, motherhood, miscarriages, queerness, gender and Judaism, illness, war, and the lingering impact of the Holocaust, the contributors present unique, at times deeply personal, insights into how Jewishness intersects with other forms of identity and identification. In doing so, the volume deepens our understanding of Jewish women’s experiences.

Arabs in Turkish Political Cartoons, 1876-1950 - National Self and Non-National Other (Paperback): Ilkim Buke Okyar Arabs in Turkish Political Cartoons, 1876-1950 - National Self and Non-National Other (Paperback)

The emergence of Turkish nationalism prior to World War I opened the way for various ethnic, religious, and cultural stereotypes to link the notion of the Other to the concept of national identity. The founding elite took up a massive project of social engineering that now required the amplification of Turkishness as the founding concept of the new nation-state. This concept was shaped by the construction of various Others as a backdrop, and for Turkey in many ways, the Arab in his keffiyeh and traditional garb constituted the ultimate Other. In this nuanced and richly detailed study, Ilkim Buke Okyar examines the development of Turkish national identity from the 1908 constitutional revolution to the inclusion of Alexandretta in 1939, using the lens of contemporary political cartoons. Okyar brings the everyday production of nationalist discourse into the mainstream political and historical narrative of modern Turkey. In doing so, Okyar shows how the cartoon press became one of the most important agents in the construction, maintenance, and mobilization of Turkish nationalism, reinforcing a perceived image of the Arab that was haunted forever by its ethnic and religious origins.

On November 18, 1928, the world's most famous Mouse made his very first public debut. Today, we celebrate 90+ years of Mickey in one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe. Starting with the first sketches of a character who was almost named Mortimer, we trace the career of Walt Disney's and Ub Iwerks's most famous creation, one met with an explosion of worldwide popularity preceded only by the earlier successes of Charlie Chaplin. With unlimited access to Disney's vast historical collections as well as public and private collections, the authors bring Mickey's success story to life: concept art, story sketches, background paintings, and animation drawings as well as historical photographs trace the origins and evolution of such timeless favorites as Steamboat Willie, The Band Concert, and Brave Little Tailor. They also follow Mickey as he builds on this legendary library of short cartoons by appearing in two historic feature-length films, Fantasia and Fun and Fancy Free. Extensive archival research sheds new light on little-known chapters of Mickey's career, the origins of the Mickey Mouse Club, and his use as a patriotic icon during World War II. Along the way, we encounter the work of all major Mickey artists in both film and comics, including such greats as Ub Iwerks, Win Smith, Ferdinand Horvath, Fred Moore, Floyd Gottfredson, Carl Barks, Manuel Gonzales, Paul Murry, Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano, Byron Erickson, and Cesar Ferioli. Mickey Mouse has left an indelible mark on everyday culture as well as high art, becoming a favored subject for Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. As Walt Disney once said: "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing-that it was all started by a mouse." And an end to the success story is nowhere in sight. Today, 90+ years after his creation, Mickey remains as lovable and popular as ever. Let's pay tribute to the little fellow, his legend, and his legacy with a monument to the one and only Mickey Mouse. Copyright (c) 2020 Disney Enterprises, Inc. About the series TASCHEN is 40!
